What can I do as Parent, Partner or Family Member to help? The transition to university is a time of change for students entering a completely new environment. Initially new students may experience a mixture of anxiety, apprehension, pride and excitement; all understandable responses to facing a new situation. In addition students may also have some added challenges. Griffith students are often: • The first person in their family to attend university • Working significant hours in paid work as well as studying • Devoting time to family and carer responsibilities as well as studying and working. You can be an important factor in encouraging your student through this transition and supporting them with managing their competing demands.

“It’s a really big transition to come to uni whether it’s from high school or somewhere else. Uni is very different, and I think it’s important to give yourself time to get used to it and what it’s like.” (First Year Student)

These seminars provide information about: • What to expect as your student moves into tertiary education • How to support your student’s aspirations, well-being and development • Strategies for succeeding at university There will be opportunities to ask Griffith University students and staff questions, in addition to a brief campus tour. New students are welcome to attend with their family and friends.
