paper toys For this first year brief, we were asked to create a set of at least 5 collectable toys made from no more than 2 sheets of A4. I wanted to make a fun, joke set of toys, which are unique to I,’ve seen before. I decided to try to link music and elderly people and therefore came up with Sex, Drugs and Nursin’ Homes, a new granddad air band. Each elderly character takes inspiration from an existing rock star, and tries to recreate a classic stance or dress sense. This project remains one of my favourites to date.

Making waves iPhone app To go with the Making Waves Corporate Identity, the next brief asked us to design an iPhone/iPad app. I decided to design mine to fit an iPhone so that it could be used more easily on a boat. It contains features such as weather forecasts, wind forecasts, holiday planner, iSpy book and a map with town and harbour information. The app had to work both vertically and horizontally.

Both photographers had sets of very different images and very different initial ideas. For Cameron’s book, he wanted to have acetate pages with the negative of found imagery printed on, opposite the positive. After discussing ideas, we decided to limit the number of acetate pages to avoid the book becoming very repetitive. Maya’s book was all about projecting an inner feeling onto the outside of a person using a light projector. The images were quite complex so I felt that a simple design would really make them stand out.

animation My animation was the story of how a Norwegian Tree becomes an Egg Box. I wanted to make my whole animation from paper models but quickly realised that this would take too long. I therefore decided to limit the amount of paper toys I used but made sure each scene still included one. I wanted to include a far bit of detail but the animation would have been too long to feature the whole story so I had to cut it down.
