Mark Collins www.markcollinsdesign.com Integral elements: Are there integral elements that often form key elements within your work – in other words how do you best generate and create your own designs/imagery? The comination of type and image has been a focus for me of recent times. I have been trying to make them both work in unison, supporting each other. I have found that I have started working on the Mac a lot quicker than I used to. Often I will work simulatenously on paper and the computer when playing with ideas and designs. This has probably stemmed from my time spent on placement where much faster solutions are needed resulting in less time spent on the initial stages. I work quite organically when using a computer, I never restrict myself to just using the A3 paper size on the screen. My work will extend right around the entire drawing board, often looping right around the screen. This allows me to constantly check back at older versions (of a logo for example) and to decide if I am heading in a more successful direction or not. This approach is great when actually working and suits me well, however it is a nightmare when it comes to printing out development work. I probably need to find a middle ground in that process.

Success: What are your strengths? Where have you been most successful? What do you think was the reason for that positive experience? I found my strongest work is done when I force myself out of my default comfort zone and consciously try and break my own mould. I have a good eye for detail and working with grid systems allows me to keep a certain structure to my work. When trying new things and being more experimental it allows me to be confident that the end result will still keep a sense of structure and order.

Personality: What are you interested in, what are you about? Do you feel you have been able to introduce your personality and interests in your work. In what creative direction do you want to proceed in the future? I always feel that I have a sense of wit in my work. I like to include a knowing nod or wink when I can. Structure and lines are definitely my friend when working on layouts, however, recently I have been trying to break out of this structure more often (with success). I’m interested in simple work that doesn’t hide behind layers and layers of abstract and pretencious concepts. I try to underpin my own work with a simple idea/concept, that is then backed by the design.

The arrow used in the logo points towards the location of the company, whilst creating an aspirational feel of moving onwards and upwards. This device is then used in playful ways across the entire spectrum of the brand.
