COAST TO COAST
SUMMER SHOW POSTERS
A photoessay on the industrial history of a costal town.
Posters to promote the University’s degree show.
INVERCLYDE INDUSTRY Shipbuilding
Greenock
The largest town in Inverclyde, it was originally a small fishing village but by the mid 17th century Greenock had an extensive herring trade and was granted burgh status in 1635. During the Industrial Revolution the harbour expanded rapidly due to transatlantic trade and growth in the shipbuilding industry.
Port Glasgow
Port Glasgow is the second largest town in Inverclyde. It developed from the hamlet of Newark in the 17th century to service the large ships unable to reach Glasgow because the Clyde was too narrow and shallow. By the early 18th century Port Glasgow had become the river’s main customs port, trading in tobacco, cotton, timber, sugar, iron and hemp.
The Clyde
The Clyde was eventually dredged and widened to give direct access to Glasgow, however, as Port Glasgow’s importance as a port waned, shipbuilding became the town’s biggest industry.
The Comet
On 24th July 1812 the first steamship slipped into the waters of the Clyde. The launch of The Comet was to rock the shipbuilding world and the tiny boat built in Port Glasgow was to become the mother of the British Steamship. It was the first steamship to be run commercially in Europe.
Shipyards
The only construction shipyard still in operation in Inverclyde now is the Port Glasgow shipyard Ferguson Shipbuilders who specialise in building small vessels including tugs and car ferries.
DISSERTATION An editorial project for my dissertation “How Album Art And Our Consumption Of Music Has Changed In The Digital Age”.
