Architecture
T
he landscape around Darien’s historic roads Mansfield and Brookside is spotted with some of the most beautiful homes and properties. Surrounded by woodlands and small ponds, home to the spring of the Goodwives River and the Darien and Wee Burn Country Clubs, it is the most secluded and peaceful area of Darien with a quaint countryside quality. Located off Brookside, at the end of Shady Acres on a generous parcel with mature trees, the Patel family’s brick house, designed by Zimmerman Architecture, breaks with the traditional wood paneling and shingles of the immediate surroundings but respects the traditional sense of scale and details, resulting in an outstanding Georgian-Colonial home with a unique character. Upon approach, the house, despite its considerable size, feels well balanced and artfully situated within the sloped setting of the land. The architecture is of clean symmetry with traditional elements and a striking interplay of solids and openings, of brick, glass and wood. It is crafted with uncompromising attention to detail that is manifested in the careful selection of the brick texture, beautiful wood trims and cornice lines with copper gutters and leaders.
Character
O
n the interior, Architecture and Decor merge to a rich, sophisticated, yet warm and inviting symbiosis. Lavish moldings, skillfully crafted millwork details and sturdy hardware are balanced by a series of strong complementing wall treatments in neutral colors. The range of wall finish variations add an additional level of exceptional attention to detail that is carried throughout the home. Furnishings, textiles and decor are anchored within the serene architecture, distinguished millwork and unique wall treatments and ultimately tie everything together to a complacent whole. The downstairs layout creates a natural flow around the central axis of foyer and family room. Skillfully connected by rich arches and doorways, adjacent rooms are closely linked yet remain distinct with their own character. A sweeping formal stair to the upper floor underlines the circular geometry of the foyer and emphasizes the arrangement of the ground floor around this central element.
