CELEBRATE IN THE CITY Season’s Greetings from Peter Soulsby, Leicester’s City Mayor
C
hristmas in Leicester is always a special event, but this year promises to be better than ever. Leicester city centre is undergoing a major transformation, so if you haven’t visited for a while you will notice some improvements. Some of the biggest are in the Old Town, including beautiful new gardens in front of Leicester Cathedral, and the stunning King Richard lll Visitor Centre just opposite. Peacock Lane, Guildhall Lane, and Applegate have all been revitalised, and work on Grey Friars is nearing completion.
Around the corner at Leicester Market we have a brand new food hall – a contemporary glass, steel and timber building offering a range of fresh produce. And at the top of the High Street we have Jubilee Square, a new public open space, which connects the old historic town with the shopping area. Leicester’s High Street is also changing, with new shops, bars and restaurants that have brought a real buzz to the city centre, and reflect the growing confidence that can be felt here. And Humberstone Gate West has a new look, with a
www.visitleicester.info/Christmas
new road surface, making it much safer for our Christmas lights switch-on, on Sunday November 16. As well as making physical improvements we’ve also been doing more to promote our 2,000 years of history, with new interpretation panels going up at key sites. As we approach 2015 there is much to look forward to in our city. Not least is the reinterment of King Richard lll, who will be laid to rest in Leicester Cathedral in March, just 100 yards away from where his mortal remains were discovered in 2012. Plans for this unique event are well under way, and there is no doubt the eyes of the world will be on Leicester and Leicestershire once again, and we will be ready for them. This guide gives you a taster of what else is to come, as well as an extensive rundown of how you can celebrate Christmas here in Leicester. With very best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Peter Soulsby

Party dress from Primark
et in the Christmas spirit at the Haymarket, where the shops are brimming with some wonderful festive goodies.
You will find masses of unusual gift ideas for all the family, brilliant stocking fillers, stunning party clothes and stylish homeware to create your very own wonderland at home. Choosing presents for the little ones can be a magical experience. From techie toys for tots and this year’s hottest playground crazes to traditional treats with a twist and handcrafted design classics, you will find everything you need in The Entertainer, the centre’s toy shop on the ground floor. Right at the top of this year’s wish-list is a talking doll named Cayla. Download the free app for your mobile or tablet, and Cayla will have plenty to say and even answer your
questions. Equally stimulating for children, but much more traditional, is Lego. Since the success of the film earlier this year, there’s been a resurgence in its popularity, and you won’t go wrong with Lego’s Ninja Turtles. This year’s Christmas party requires high-impact all out glamour. Sequins, satin and lace are this season’s best bets for getting glammed up. TK Maxx offers a chic and contemporary environment to find the latest designer styles at up to 60 per cent less, while H&M Is always on trend with the latest looks. Primark never fails to impress with its catwalk looks at low prices. High fashion isn’t for everyone, so if more classic styles are for you then the David Emmanuel collection at Bonmarche will hit the mark. The store has recently undergone a revamp with a fresh new look making your shopping trip even more enjoyable. Aside from the big names and national chains, the Haymarket is also home to a number of independent shops where you’ll find an eclectic selection to tempt individual tastes. The Haymarket Spend & Reward* promotion is back for Christmas 2014. Simply collect your receipts from participating shops during the period from November 10 to December 3, and if it adds up to £50 or more they’ll give you a £5 gift card to spend in store. Spend £100, and you’ll get two! Amanda Phillips, centre manager, said: “We’re really pleased to be rewarding our loyal shoppers once again this Christmas. We know it can be an expensive time for many families, so giving something back is very important to us.”

he Lanes are a popular place to shop and eat with friends and family. Loseby Lane in particular offers something out of the ordinary. The quaint road offers quirky and independent stores. You can get your hands on everything from clothing and jewellery, to toys and unique cards, as well as bespoke furniture and homewares. At Christmas it looks completely magical. There’s a continental feel to the place, with cafes galore spilling out onto its pavements. You can grab coffee and cake, a panini, or even some mulled wine to enjoy al fresco style. Flowerworks is a delightful florists where hand-tied bouquets and attention to detail are truly evident. Staff are more than happy to make up a bouquet to meet your individual requirements and budget. There are also real ale inns, serving good, honest pub food, with a generous dollop of entertainment to boot.
Boutiques brim with individual gift ideas – but beware, they may also tempt you into a cheeky sparkly treat for yourself too. Lanes Fine Jewellery is no exception. The shop has a superb collection of diamond jewellery, including tiffany-style engagement rings. Owners Ercan and Carli Onguc are also only too happy to create something special at personal request. Carli said: “The Lanes has so many small, independent stores offering unique items that can rival the prices of any of the high street shops. It’s a great place to visit, especially at Christmas. It’s always fantastically lit at this time of year and there’s an historic feel to it as it’s so close to the Cathedral. If you’re lucky, you may even get to hear the bells or Christmas carol singing in the background as you shop - you can’t get anymore festive than that.”

S
t Martin’s Square is another quirky part of Leicester that has much to offer the discerning shopper and diner.
Centred around a pretty courtyard, its clock, which stands on a building in the centre of the square, has been redecorated in recent months and some new stores have also moved into the area. St Martin’s Square may be relatively small, but it’s perfectly formed and is rather a tranquil spot to head to away from the main bustle of the high street. Eclectic independent stores are also aplenty and there’s an attractive creative edge which draws you in. It has everything from vintage style clothing, jewellery, and art work to artisan goodies, ethicallysourced gifts and wonderfully styled clothing for children and adults to choose from. Food lovers can pick up a pizza or head to one of the city’s trendiest cafe spots, St Martin’s Tea and Coffee Merchants. Well worth a visit is the new Gelato Village, with its amazing ice cream, made with fresh ingredients and cream and served up in generous portions. Deli in the Square is another new addition to this little area, selling fine foods, along with ‘jingle bag’ hampers this Christmas, filled with goodies and fine wines.

ST MARTIN’S Owner Sam Tuck, who is Leicester born and bred, said: “St Martin’s and all the other independent shops here complement what we have to offer. That’s one of the main reasons we decided to sell our fine foods from this lovely location.” Another highlight of St Martin’s is relatively new bar, 33 Cank Street, with its jazz and blues and classic and contemporary cocktails, and the odd unique creation thrown in, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a busy week and stays open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. Celini luggage and leather shop on nearby Hotel Street - just around the corner from St Martin’s Square - is a dream destination for buying handbags, purses, suitcases, holdalls, and more. And with brands like Samsonite and Antler, there really is something to suit everyone.
St Martin’s Tea and coffee Merchants
On December 7, from 10am until 8pm, St Martin's will be hosting its annual Christmas Fayre, including a Santa's Grotto for the youngsters, live music by acts including By The Rivers, and activities such as live art by The Mud Collective, who will be creating pieces to be placed permanently in the square. The Font Pub will also be there providing alcoholic refreshments all day. On top of all that, there are seasonal food suppliers, including a hog roast by Mrs Bridges Tea Rooms, and a vintage bicycle, supplying roast chestnuts and popcorn.

VICTORIAN SPLENDOUR IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
L
eicester’s Silver Arcade is a grand historic building, shrouded in undeniable charm and character.
The four-storey emporium, built in the 19th century by famous local architect Amos Hall, offers retail, offices and showrooms. Reopened last year after a £3 million refurbishment, it’s a perfect blend of contemporary features and original Victorian architecture. Its sympathetic renovation has even bagged its current owners, Lukegate Limited, a Leicestershire ProCon Award.
occasion, from prom and evening dresses to that special bridesmaid gown. Owner Rosie Holmes said: “Silver Arcade has some fabulous niche independents, all offering something a little different from the high street chains and online stores. If you're looking for a unique gift or just to escape the crowds, then The Silver Arcade is a little hidden gem.” Pop-up stores are also a regular feature, along with events like this summer’s comic book convention, which drew hundreds to the arcade.
The centre is home to a range of retailers, including a laser and skin clinic, chocolate specialists, hair and beauty and clothing.
The area outside Silver Arcade has also been revamped to the tune of £300,000, with the road and pavement upgraded by Leicester City Council.
Among them is Divine Boutique with its fabulous frocks and gorgeous gowns fit for any special
The arcade itself is a gateway to the city’s Lanes and sits a stones throw away from the multi-million pound Highcross development.

MAGICAL MARKET STREET
I
f it’s a mix of independent and high street shops you’re after, head to the city’s Market Street. It’s completely pedestrianised, and at the top end sits one of Leicester’s most iconic stores—Fenwick. Spread over, no less than, five floors, you will find everything you could possibly need, from high quality fashion labels and beauty to homewares and a plentiful range of furniture. The staff are really helpful and go above and beyond to provide a truly classy shopping experience. There’s also a café in store for those who need to quench their thirst or satisfy their hunger while they shop till they drop. And at Christmas, you can bag yourself amazing bargains in the Winter sale, which takes place on November 27 and December 4 with 20 per cent off everything in store, it really isn’t to be missed and means that you can pick up that perfect Christmas present and perhaps treat yourself at the same time. Entry is by special invitation only and requires two vouchers to be collected and an entry form to be completed from within the Leicester Mercury.
Fenwick director David Illingworth said: “We have everything you could possibly want this Christmas along Market Street and in store. There’s a fantastic cafe culture along here and we’re expecting huge numbers as usual to flock to our special sale days. There’s always a great atmosphere along here at Christmas and we do our very best to get into the spirit of things.” Third generation family jewellery business, Lumbers, is also a main feature of the street, as is George Tarratt Jewellers. The selection of diamonds, watches, and other sparkly pieces can’t fail to draw your attention in either shop. Fashion stores, White Stuff and Fat Face also have a whole host of knitwear and other winter clothing goods to offer, while Greenwoods can help you out with that smart office outfit. There are plenty of cafes to choose from too, so you can sit and watch the world go by while enjoying a thirst-quenching beverage and some delicious food. Vegetarian specialist Mirch Masala offers tasty culinary dishes and the newly refurbished Slug and Lettuce pub is on hand to enjoy a cocktail or two. A bite to eat? Or something special and sparkly for Christmas - you can find it all on Market Street

THE CHARM OF CHURCH GATE
A
t the head of Church Gate you can see the stunningly beautiful St Margaret’s Church which, when lit up at night, really makes for a spectacular view. There are hidden treasures to be found down this road. With reasonably priced street wear and urban clothing available as well as jewellery shops selling unusual rings, bracelets, and necklaces. You can also pick up some unique tasty treats from The Fruity Chocolatier, or when the sun sets head to Mix’d Café Bar for the best cocktails in town. Among the many reasons to visit this side of town is independent furniture store, Langtons, which supplies high quality upholstery and furnishings. It has built up an enviable reputation over 67 years and has a great selection of three-piece suites, dining and bedroom furniture to choose from.
Matalan department store is also located along Church Gate and has a reputation for being on trend and exceptionally well-priced. Brucciani’s café is another great reason to visit this area, if only to embrace its Italian love and passion for food. Its coffee beans are specially selected and roasted to its own recipe and its cakes and pastries are freshly made at its Leicester bakery every morning. In fact, it has just won a series of top accolades for its bread at the Tiptree World Bread Awards, in London, coming top in the Great British White category for its large white tin loaf. Brucciani’s also claimed gold for its ciabatta, silver for its sourdough and bronze in the real bread category, for which it also entered a sourdough loaf. Managing director Tom Brucciani said it was a reflection of the “care, time and effort” the firm put into its products. He added: “We’re proud of what we do and to receive such recognition is very satisfying.” “Most mornings we have a queue of people as we open our doors so we must be doing something right.”

CLARENDON PARK IS THE PLACE TO BE
Q
ueens Road, in the fashionable Clarendon Park area of the city, lies close to the stunning Victoria Park. The road is packed with independent stores including fine eateries, delis, cafes, fruit and vegetable stores, up-market bakeries, jewellers, gift shops and chic hairdressers. Its surrounding streets also offer an eclectic mix of fabulous secondhand furniture shops and vintage clothing, including Vintage Utopia in nearby Montague Road and Knit One - stocking all the essentials to knit your own pieces. Richard Talbott, who runs Vintage Utopia said: “It’s a trendy little area and there are lots of independent shops and nice bars and restaurants. “At Vintage Utopia we have some great vintage gems, an eclectic mix of 20th Century furniture, glassware and collectibles, the kind of unique retro items and statement pieces that can complete any room and we love it here.” And it’s because of this that Clarendon Park is among the most desirable parts of the city to live, with its treelined streets and vibrant mixture of residents. Don Leone Italian restaurant offers some fine food fare, while Barceloneta is renowned for its delicious, authentic tapas and Babelas Continental Bar for its cheese board and extensive selection of decent wine. Olive’s Bar is also a popular destination for a night out and a dance upstairs if the mood takes you. Christopher James Deli has many exotic treats to choose from, from continental chocolates, patisserie, and local produce. Its cheese counter alone stocks over 20 different cheeses and for special occasions like Christmas. Michael Grundy Jewellers has a beautiful collection and offers a full design service so you can add your own special touches. If it’s a special festive card you’re after, then head to Art of Cards for a fine selection. Clarendon Park Christmas Fair has become a highlight of the season’s calendar, when Queens Road is closed to traffic and dozens of stalls sell local wares. There’s also a host of live music to add to the atmosphere. This year’s fair takes place on December 7.

LIVELY LONDON ROAD L ondon Road has a plethora of shops, bars, not to mention ice cream parlours to frequent. The area itself is vibrant and as it sits so close to the city centre as well as the University of Leicester, it’s a great place for business people who flock to its watering holes on a Friday night after work and students, who head there for food and a pint.
The Lansdowne, close to Victoria Park, is one such place. With a great menu of food and drink including main courses such as roasted pheasant and cod loin, cocktails and happy hour included, if you get there at just the right time, it’s a great place to go. Slightly further down and closer to the city centre, is
the Marquis Wellington, which has shifted from being a traditional pub to a modern pub/bar. The soft lighting and big tables are a great draw for the crowds at this popular place. Madison’s dessert restaurant is another fantastic highlight of this street with ice creams galore to choose from. It’s traditional exterior gives way to a contemporary interior that still manages to be cosy and is extremely welcoming. London Road is renowned for its Indian restaurants, but there are others to choose from if you look hard enough. More restaurant offers a quality world buffet dining experience and staff go out of their way to make it fun. But there’s much more to London Road than simply food and drink. Christopher Scotney Menswear is a particularly special feature of the road. Its reputation for quality designer suits has kept it trading for many a year, as has the quality of service.

History panel: Cllr Piara Singh Clair, Sally Coleman, heritage manager, and City Mayor Peter Soulsby with one of the panels
DISCOVER OUR CITY’S HERITAGE
I
f you’re planning a Christmas shopping trip to Leicester, look out for the new heritage interpretation panels you’ll find dotted around the city centre. Featuring information on key heritage buildings and well-known individuals associated with Leicester, the panels can be seen in shopping centres, on medieval churches, near former warehouses and in front of the city’s iconic landmarks such as the Clock Tower and Corn Exchange. Some are free-standing ‘totem’-style boards, while others are mounted on walls or railings. The idea is to encourage people to find out more about Leicester’s rich heritage. Many remarkable and fascinating things have happened in Leicester over the centuries. In times past, the city saw visits from Charles Dickens, Buffalo Bill and George Bernard Shaw. We can also lay claim to the world’s oldest secular society and one of the oldest schoolhouses in England.
64
ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS GUIDE
City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “The discovery of the remains of King Richard III has inspired a resurgence of interest in the city’s 2,000 years of history. “These panels will help to make local people more aware of the rich heritage around them and inspire pride in our historic city. I also hope visitors to Leicester will find them interesting and will want to explore the city to discover its historic gems. They set the scene for the thriving, ambitious city we see today.” A further 10 heritage panels connecting King Richard III to historic sites around the city were put up last year, and are linked by a popular walking trail. The panels are part of the city’s ‘Story of Leicester’ project, which aims to bring the past to life for people living in Leicester today. De Montfort Hall is one of Leicester’s premier venues, where audiences have been dazzled for over a century, while the Curve theatre, in the city’s Cultural Quarter, has quickly garnered a reputation for highclass performance and events over the past five years. The Y Theatre, at Leicester’s YMCA, also offers a wellstocked programme of performance events, while The Little Theatre, whose patron and honorary president was the late, great, Lord Richard Attenborough, is a fantastic ‘amdram’ venue. SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS
S
mall Business Saturday (SBS) originated in the US and is held on one of the busiest shopping Saturdays of the year.
The first SBS was in 2010, and was staged as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday traditionally days when major retailers and ecommerce promotes the beginning of the main Christmas shopping period. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages customers to shop at small, local ‘bricks and mortar’ shops to buy their Christmas gifts. This year, Leicester is working with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) to promote small, local firms by holding a FSB ‘surgery’ on Saturday December 6. The FSB branded bus will be in the city centre first thing in the morning for an hour and there will be a special guest on board. Visit the pop-up FSB Surgery in the historic Silver Arcade on Silver Street. Case studies of small commercial businesses that have received grant support through Enterprising Leicester will be on display as well as examples of work from small businesses in Maker’s Yard, LCB and the Phoenix. FSB service providers will also be on hand to offer advice to small business owners on a range of topics such as finance, communication, mobile payments, and more. Look out for the Keep Trade Local Challenge stickers on the windows of participating small businesses. This Challenge runs from mid November to December 12 and gives shoppers the opportunity to win some great prizes including a Christmas hamper full of goodies worth £250. Simply go online at www.fsb.org.uk/leicestershire and tell us where, when, and what gifts you bought from small businesses during this period.

COUNTDOWN TO RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015
L
EICESTER is a city that’s passionate about sport, so it’s fitting that, in 2015, we’ll be able to welcome three Rugby World Cup games to the Leicester city stadium in Filbert Way. Leicester is the only city in the East Midlands to have been selected to host matches in the six-week tournament, which will see the top 20 teams in the world competing for the prestigious Webb Ellis Cup. City Mayor Peter Soulsby said he was proud that Leicester would be hosting three matches in 2015. “We’re determined to make sure that everyone who comes here to watch the tournament gets a warm welcome,” he said. “With just over a year to go before Leicester hosts its first game, we’re going to be working with our partners to ensure visitors experience the very best that Leicester and Leicestershire have to offer. “ It all kicks off on September 18, 2015 with the opening ceremony and opening match at the home of English rugby - Twickenham. In Leicester, there will be three matches - all hosted at the Leicester City Stadium: ■ Sunday October 4, Argentina v Tonga ■ Tuesday October 6, Canada v Romania

HISTORYLEICESTER
A FITTING TRIBUTE FOR THE LAST PLANTAGENET T he burial of a medieval king isn’t something that happens every day, but that’s exactly what is taking place in Leicester next spring.
Preparations are underway at Leicester Cathedral for the reinterment of King Richard III, nearly 530 years after his death in battle. The Last Plantagenet King of England was unearthed at nearby Greyfriars in August 2012 in a major archaeological project searching for the only English monarch without a marked grave. He had been brought to Leicester after the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, and given a simple burial in the long-lost church of the Greyfriars, which once occupied the site of the new King Richard III Visitor Centre.
The latest chapter of his astonishing story will unfold in March 2015, when the king is once again buried, this time with a ceremony befitting a crowned monarch, at Leicester Cathedral. The reinterment ceremony will begin on March 22, with a dignified procession bringing King Richard’s coffin from Bosworth Battlefield into the city via a number of villages relevant to the battle.
The cortege will leave the University of Leicester and travel to Fenn Lane Farm, near Stoke Golding, which is believed to be the exact site of King Richard’s death. From there it will visit Dadlington – in whose churchyard many dead from the battle lie buried – and on to the parish church at nearby Sutton

HISTORYLEICESTER Cheney, where King Richard is said to have taken his final Mass on the eve of battle. The cortege will then visit the Bosworth Battlefield Visitor Centre before making its way back to Leicester via Market Bosworth, Newbold Verdon and Desford. In Leicester, the king’s procession will be met on Bow Bridge by City Mayor Peter Soulsby and Lord Mayor Councillor John Thomas. A horse-drawn hearse will then bring the king’s coffin to Leicester Cathedral, where it will be received into the care of the church. King Richard will lie in repose until the reinterment ceremony on Thursday, March 26, which will be attended by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rt Revd Justin Welby. Two other public services are also being held as part of the reinterment process. A public mass for the repose of King Richard’s soul will be held on Monday, March 23, by the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Vincent Nichols. On Friday, March 27, another public service will be held to mark the end of King Richard’s journey,
revealing the king’s sealed tomb. At Leicester Cathedral, building work is taking place to create the new area to house King Richard’s tomb. It involves dismantling existing wooden screens and removing furnishings, removing some of the stone floor and creating a vault. The four-tonne tomb stone will be put in place and sealed for all time following the reinterment service. Visitors can view the progress of the works through an observation window, and are also able to register for fortnightly updates on the reinterment project by visiting www.kingrichardinleicester.com An appeal to help raise the £2.5million needed for the work is under way. The appeal’s patron is His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester – itself a title that had been conferred upon Richard before he become king, by his elder brother King Edward IV. The reinterment of King Richard will bring an end to a fascinating journey of discovery which has given a remarkable insight into the life and death of the last English monarch to die in battle.
