THURSDAY

BRUSHER BATHER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM TERI DIMARINO

Your ability to do your job, and do it right, separates you from being “just a bather” to a position that contributes to the finished product in the salon. Teri believes that a good bath, brush and dry is 50% of a great groom. The bathing room is where most stylists started. Before future groomers begin to think of clipping coat, they must first know what to expect from the hair, and how to treat it to obtain desired results. Surprisingly, many great B/Bs remain in the bathing room, preferring the security of knowing there will always be a need for their expert services. Bathers-in-training, “groomer wannabes”, seasoned groomer techs and salon owners will benefit from this day-long program with tips on equipment and products to make the job easier. From getting the dog ready for the tub, to finding the right shampoo through proper bathing and blow-drying techniques, Teri will cover the B/B fundamentals. Safety issues and handling will be stressed.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE AND HOW TO USE THEM

From brushes and nail clippers, muzzles to grooming loops, Teri covers equipment basics, highlighting correct uses, in an effort to make the work easier and more comfortable for pet and bather. “These techniques and tools will make the finished groom a true work of art,” says Teri. Anals and ears will be discussed.

DEMATTING… IT’S NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE

Everyone has a technique for dematting a neglected pet. For some, it’s a shave-down and then entering the pelt in a Mat Contest. For others, it’s a time-consuming, hairsplitting experience, destined to take its toll on the pet, the B/B or both. Teri examines the most common and effective products, tools and techniques for the demat dilemma without getting all tangled up.

WHAT’S IN THOSE BUBBLES??? SHAMPOOS, CONDITIONERS & SPRAY

Tocopherol, Ergocalciferol, Sodium Chloride. Teri takes a “groomers-eye” view of the stuff we use every day in language we can understand. Shampoos, sprays and conditioners are our most expendable items but, what do we really know to select the right product for our situation? (Those scary words are techno-speak for vitamin E, vitamin D and simple table salt, often found in many grooming products.)

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BATHING AND DRYING TIME

Bathing and drying are the most underestimated aspects of our jobs. Techniques can make or break a groom. The ability to properly apply products and thoroughly cleaning and then drying the pet will have a direct influence on the finish. You will hear about time-saving equipment and techniques. This program is six hours long and is included in the Liberty Pass or can be purchased separately. See Schedule and Registration for starting times and fees. WEEKEND TOPICS SATURDAY YOUR BUSINESS RUNS ON SHAMPOO STREAMLINING YOUR GROOMING PROCESS WITH LIQUIDS! DAVE CAMPANELLA

Let’s be frank. Your business runs on shampoo, and “Tub Time” is the most critical phase of the grooming process. The liquid products you use definitely impact your business’ success. There are products out there that do most of the hard work for you. However these typically get overlooked, even though they save a ton of time, and time is money for grooming professionals. In fact, you may have some of these products in your salon right now staring you in the face! We will reveal these, what key ingredients to look for, discuss pH, the myths behind dilution rates, breakthrough conditioners, whiteners, deodorizers, facial washes and more. Most importantly we will reveal the best methods for using these products and how to actually “do more with less”. A fresh perspective and “must see” for any salon owner, mobile business or start-up!

LOOKING OUT FOR #1! GROOMER HEALTH ISSUES TERI DIMARINO

It’s no secret that pet styling is a physically demanding profession. We like what we’re doing, and most of us hope for long grooming careers. However, there are things that can make grooming uncomfortable at the very least, if not impossible. Back, neck, and shoulder problems abound. Respiratory illnesses are not uncommon. Repetitive motion disorders plague us, and many oldtimers are wearing hearing aids. Many of us think we are “Super Groomers” 14

ALL AMERICAN GROOMING SHOW 2015

and these physical ailments will never happen to us. Think again! Teri will share simple ergonomic techniques, sanitary procedures, and safety measures that should be in place in all salons to prevent issues that can cut your career short.

teach you how to make the pet styles that leave your salon “different”. You will learn how to correct defective structure and create structure where it is lacking to make a marked & notable improvement in the look of your grooms.

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU CHARGE FOR YOUR GROOMING SERVICES? MICHELL EVANS

POODLE IN SPORTING TRIM MICHELL EVANS

We all want to know the answer to this question! Well the answer is in your budget! This workshop will walk you through the process of creating a business budget for your salon. Please bring a good estimate of your expenses, a calculator, and a pen. I will provide a worksheet. Your expenses and personal information need not be shared if you do not wish. We will explore a sample budget. We will begin to determine what you need to charge in order to meet your goals. This is an enlightening experience!

HANDSTRIPPING FROM THE BEGINNING VALERIE PARTYNSKI

In this seminar, Valerie will teach you how to hold your tools correctly, how to strip a blown coat, and how to start and maintain a rolled coat. She will also show examples of why handstripping is so important for breeds with wiry coats, and how learning this specialty will make you an asset to your area and salon. From learning the products and tools, to proper techniques, you will walk away feeling excited to try it on your own.

CORRECTIVE GROOMING & CREATING STRUCTURE IRINA PINKUSEVICH

How does structure affect your pet grooms? In this seminar, Pina will

In this hour Michell will show you how to create a stylish yet low maintenance sporting trim on a Poodle. She will demonstrate the quick and easy use of snap-on combs to set your lines and lengths and then finish with scissors. She will also show the clipper lines for the face, feet and tail. This trim is a money maker!

OSHA? MSDS? FICA? OH MY! BARB HOOVER

If you have employees or are thinking about hiring one, there are many things you must know. In this class, Barb will explain what you need to know to keep your business in compliance with local and federal regulations.

SHORT... BUT SWEET! KEEPING STYLE IN A SHORT CLIP! LISA LEADY

“I don’t like dogs that look like they are standing on sticks, just because the owner wants the pet short,” says Lisa Leady, a top competitive groomer and Groomer Has It Star. “Groomers need to show some style and ability, even on a pet grooming. “Styling is becoming a lost art, and I want to show groomers that you can still give a pet a short trim while maintaining a great look, appeal and showing some skill.” See this top winning groomer really shine in pet trims.

WEEKEND TOPICS THE WORLD OF SHEARS RANDY LOWE

This program will be devoted to Shears. Here are just some of Randy’s topics: What are the differences in scissors? German style vs. Japanese style edges? What does Rockwell hardness mean? Should you buy Stainless, high carbon, cast aluminum, ceramic or a combination? And what about “hot dipped”, cast or stamped? Learn how a shear works, ergonomic factors, finishes and sharpening techniques in this allinclusive visual program. You will learn what you can do at home, but you will not be actually working on equipment in this class.

AIRBORNE DISEASE CONTROL ANNETTE UDA

Grooming shops, pet boarding, and doggie daycare facilities are subject to outbreaks of airborne infections (such as K-9 Cough, Influenza, Distemper etc.) that can transmit between animals and to or from animals and humans. The control of these diseases depends on both surface cleaning and air cleaning and it is necessary to address both problems to control the spread of diseases. Air cleaning technology is addressed as a complement to surface disinfection for the control of zoonotic pathogens. In this class you will learn which pet pathogens can transmit by the airborne route, which pet pathogens can transmit to humans, which human pathogens can transmit to other animals.

CREATING THE IDEAL GROOMING SALON TERI DIMARINO

Teri will take you on a tour from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall in the construction of a new, state of the art, grooming salon that

maximizes space and profits. Highlights will include the fine art of setting up a big salon in a small space by using time and labor-saving equipment, effective storage by applying the “art” of utilizing “vertical square footage”. High visibility grooming and client comfort will be addressed as well as some hidden aspects of salon ownership such as seeking the right location, dealing with leases and landlords as well as making retail work for you.

AMERICAN COCKER SPANIELS JANICE FEHN

What you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask - inside and out. Janice will demonstrate how to properly set your lines according to breed standard. Learn her shortcuts to achieve breed profile in a pet trim.

SALON CREATIVE ADD -ON SERVICES ANGELA KUMPE & LORI CRAIG

Angela and Lori will show you several new products for quick add-on creative services in the salon as well as covering several you may have seen before but just didn’t know how they were achieved. Some of the topics will include chalking, Swarovski crystals, iron in accessories, quick touches of color, glitter designs, and creative finishing touches.

I WANT THAT: FIND OUT WHAT’S HOT AND HOW TO USE THEM CHERYL PURCELL

Seems like every time you open a catalog there’s some new grooming tool. Ever wonder if they’re for you? Well, Cheryl, a self-proclaimed gadget junkie, is here to let you know what’s worth trying, what you just can’t live without, and how to use them correctly. Also, learn how to groom more efficiently and with less stress.

SUPER STYLING THE MIXED BREED SUE ZECCO

Sue will teach different thinning and blending techniques to achieve a natural looking finish on the mixedbreed. This demo will focus on adding personality to an average looking dog. She will demonstrate how to balance the head in with the rest of the body and how to set the length with clippers to cut out a lot of thinning and scissoring. This will help save you time with the finishing process.

THINNING SHEARS, A GROOMERS BEST KEPT SECRET! JONATHAN DAVID

Jonathan believes thinning shears are one of his most useful cutting tools. He executes entire haircuts on a variety of coat types using thinning shears alone. In this live dog demonstrationstyle seminar he’ll share his use of the “scissor over comb” techniques that he has learned and developed into his own personal style. The “soft looking” lines of thinners vs. the blunt cut of a scissor results in smooth layering and a natural looking finish incomparable to any other. And with the use of thinning shears you can achieve any length trim without being limited to snap-on combs.

PROFILES OF SUCCESS: THE WHISKERS RESORT STORY MELISSA VERPLANK

This is a true story. How a small luxury pet resort started off as Melissa’s dream. In just 5 short years it grew to generating over a million dollars in sales annually. The occupancy rate consistently sat at over 100%. Holidays and weekends always had a bursting cancelation list – at times, over 200 guests on the list. In order to satisfy an ever growing clientele, an expansion was needed. In the fall of 2014, Whiskers Resort & Pet Spa grew from a 10,000 square foot facility to 30,000 square foot showcase pet care complex. It has become a pet care resort that is heads and tails above most. Currently they offer; overnight lodging for dogs and cats, doggie day care, full service grooming and extensive canine training. In this lesson, Melissa walks you through its creation – and growing pains on its road to success.

Rescue Remedy and a chicken sandwich, we were back. Josh was regaining his strength, but we had sat out of the competition and lost valuable time. I wasn’t sure if I could complete him with the time I had left. Kathy Rose announced “scissors down” just as I added a couple feathers for a headpiece. After all that coat growth, I just didn’t have time to finish what I had planned. We still managed to get third place and the coveted People’s Choice Award. Lori again got first place, and the “Lion King” managed to remain undefeated. I decided to go ahead and take the design to one more show: Atlanta Pet Fair. I just had to complete this design that I had worked so hard to perfect. Just a couple weeks before Atlanta, my mother passed away; I was devastated. I had no intentions of going anywhere, especially so soon after her death. My mother was my soul, my greatest fan, my seamstress, and my inspiration. In the days before Atlanta, my entire family pushed me to go on and do what my mom would have wanted me to do. “She would want you to go, Angela!” is what my dad was telling me. I agreed to go but wasn’t sure if I would compete. I just wasn’t up to it. The night before we left, I told my dad, “I will work on my dog, and if I can do it, I will. For my mom!” It was time to get the dogs ready, and I am sure everyone thought I had lost my mind. I just kept talking to my mom while I was working on Josh, just like she was standing there. When I was done, I was so excited. It was beautiful, and win or lose, I was happy. I pulled it together and completed the design; my mom would have been so proud. We won first place and People’s Choice.
