THURSDAY
Brusher / Bather Certificate Program by Teri DiMarino Your ability to do your job and do it right separates you from being “just a bather” to a position that contributes to the finished product in the salon. Teri believes that a good bath, brush, and dry is 50% of a great groom. The bathing room is where most stylists started. Before future groomers begin to think of clipping coat, they must first know what to expect from the hair and how to treat it to obtain desired results. Surprisingly, many great B/Bs remain in the bathing room, preferring the security of knowing there will always be a need for their expert services. Bathers-in-training, “groomer wannabes,” seasoned groomer techs, and salon owners will benefit from this day-long program with tips on equipment and products to make the job easier. From getting the dog ready for the tub to finding the right shampoo through proper bathing and blow-drying techniques, Teri will cover the B/B fundamentals. Safety issues and handling will be stressed. Tools of the Trade & How to Use Them From brushes and nail clippers, muzzles to grooming loops, Teri covers equipment basics, highlighting correct uses, in an effort to make the work easier and more comfortable for pet and bather. “These techniques and tools will make the finished groom a true work of art,” says Teri. Anals and ears will be discussed. Dematting: It’s Not What It Used to Be Everyone has a technique for dematting a neglected pet. For some, it’s a shave-down and then entering the pelt in a mat contest. For others, it’s a time-con-
suming, hair-splitting experience, destined to take its toll on the pet, the B/B or both. Teri examines the most common and effective products, tools, and techniques for the demat dilemma without getting all tangled up. What’s in Those Bubbles? Shampoos, Conditioners, & Spray Tocopherol, ergocalciferol, sodium chloride. Teri takes a “groomers-eye” view of the stuff we use every day in language we can understand. Shampoos, sprays, and conditioners are our most expendable items, but what do we really know to
select the right product for our situation? (Those scary words are techno-speak for vitamin E, vitamin D, and simple table salt, often found in many grooming products.) Getting the Most out of Your Bathing & Drying Time Bathing and drying are the most underestimated aspects of our jobs. Techniques can make or break a groom. The ability to properly apply products, thoroughly clean, and then dry the pet will have a direct influence on the finish. You will hear about time-saving equipment and techniques.

by Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins This fast-paced overview of the world of dogs will provide context and back story for groomers to better understand what we see every day in our canine clients. Deeply rich in scientific and historical information. This must-see program will be especially helpful to the more novice groomer. But even the well-established dog professional will meet the most cutting edge new thinkers in our field and learn all new science, history, and organizational approaches to grooming the various coat types, based on an evolutionary understanding of dog breeds and groups. Recent scientific studies have revolutionized our understanding of dogs and their history, as they have developed into the breeds and groups of breeds that we see today. Attendees will learn the origins, genetic makeup, and evolutionary forces that led to the anatomy and diversity of dog breeds, coat types, amazing abilities, and engaging behaviors of dogs that we see today. Discover how both Nature and Nurture combined to create the closest relationship of any two species on this planet: the unique bond between Humans and the Dog. Find out what we learned about breeds of dogs when the canine genome was mapped. What is a "purebred" dog and how does the recent fad of designer crossbreeds fit in to the bigger picture? What do most dogs actually look like and how do they live worldwide? Learn where dogs in all their vast variety of breeds came from and how their evolution and domestication may have been responsible for the very survival of humanity. Why are the modern dog breeds "grouped" into certain common functions, abilities, and even coat types? How does the origin of the 7 Groups help us better understand their grooming needs? What are the major dog coat types and how should each be groomed correctly? Why was each coat type created? We will identify and cover basic information on over 200 breeds, categorizing their coat types for
easy organization into grooming approaches. We will also cover dog shows: what they are, how they can be accessed, and how groomers can benefit from them. What tools, equipment, and grooming procedures are right and wrong for each type of coat? What differences exist between "pet" and "show" grooming for each of the coat types while modeling the Breed Standard? We will systematically lay out correct grooming procedures based on the science about each coat type. And groomers will learn the proper care of the most common and natural dog coat of all—the Double Coat—courageously tackling what has been a controversy in our evolving profession. By the end of the day every groomer will have acquired have a deep understanding of, and powerful evidence for, the importance of the grooming profession.

FEAR FREE
™
BE T HE Ch a nge by Steve Dale The Fear Free initiative in veterinary medicine has been transformative. Veterinary professionals are seeing results where fear, anxiety and stress of pet visits to clinics are diminished. The pets are far better off, and clients are more likely to return. This is something that can be implemented by groomers and trainers, as well. Steve explains that many pets visiting vet offices or grooming salons actually feel as if they are going to die—literally. Then, the client gets “stressed out” even thinking about it and is not likely to see you. Besides, everyone wants to do what’s right for pets, to lower fear, anxiety and stress—and it can be done. Steve offers some information about why this is so important for the pet, not to mention for your business. And he offers a few tips on how to lower that fear, anxiety and stress—even before the pet arrives, as often all this begins in homes with Fear Free Happy Homes, as well as a Q&A session at the end. This evening program is two hours long and is included in the VIP, Do-It-All, and Thurs./Fri. admissions, or can be purchased separately. See schedule and registration for starting times and fees. Program includes trade show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Heroes for healthy pets by Dr. Kat Primm The Heroes for Healthy Pets Certification in Infectious Disease Management is a program sponsored by Barkleigh, The International Boarding and Pet Services Association, National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), and Pet Sitters, International. The Heroes for Healthy Pets Certification is open to all pet and veterinary professionals. To become certified, both modules must be completed and the certification examination must be passed. Understanding Infectious Disease (7 – 8 PM) This seminar will discuss common transmissible diseases of dogs, including pathogens of CIRDC (canine infectious respiratory disease complex- including dog flu), Leptospirosis, Parvo, and Distemper. The lecture will give an overview of the incidence rate, how to recognize the clinical signs of illness and how to recognize signs of illness in dogs, and prevention. Management of outbreaks in group environments such as kennels and doggie daycares and options for prevention, including vaccination and sanitation protocols will also be discussed.
Effective Infectious Disease Control (8 – 9 PM) To remain competitive in this market, pet professional businesses must keep their pet owners happy and this means keeping pets healthy. In 2016, leading experts on infectious disease developed a consensus statement to recommend best practices for pet care and safety for pet professional businesses such as kennels, veterinary facilities, doggie daycares, dog walkers, groomers, and training facilities. This program covers the topic of best practices of sanitation and prevention of infectious disease spread.

Bring a calculator and a pencil to this talk! She will guide you through those mysterious areas and assist you in setting prices that are right for YOUR situation. BARKLEIGH HONORS
2018
Barkleigh Productions and Groomer to Groomer magazine are excited to present the 8th annual Barkleigh Honors Awards! These are the grooming industry’s most extensive awards. “Our goal is to recognize the groomers that go above and beyond in their contributions to our industry,” explains Barkleigh president Todd Shelly. “All awards must be substantiated and will not be determined by popularity alone. However, there will be some categories where the top four or five finalists, and ultimately the winner, will be determined by popular vote. Other categories, like Competitor of the Year, will be determined by a point system. This will keep things fun and fresh.” Preceding the Awards will be the elegant EZ Groom Abstract Creative Runway competition. A special lighted catwalk will be constructed for this event.
Tickets included in Deluxe or VIP seminar package. Dinner tickets must be purchased to attend the Barkleigh Honors Awards and Abstract Creative Runway event. Dinner tickets WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE at the show.

Keeping your Pet
a Free In many areas of the country, flea control is a year round necessit y. In conjunction with con tinuing premise control, many pet ow ners have great succes s with oral or topical pr oducts that are administered once a m onth to their pet. The y come in a variety of bra nds like - Advantage®, Frontline®, Revolution®, and Program®. There are specific form ulations for dogs and cats, and most are approved to use on puppies and kittens six to eight weeks and old er. Read and follow the i nstructions, making sur e to use the product that is specified for your pet. These products ar e extremely popular because of their once a month convenience, ease of application, and effectiveness. Most are waterproof, allowing y our pet to be bathed, or to swim, without dec reasing the product’s effectiveness. Also, keeping your pet flea free with this continuous protection, is far less costly than trying to eliminate an i nfestation on your pet and in your home.
