CRAFTING A CAREER:

LI FE

YOUR WAY E by Khris Berry e

When your parents and their parents were young— they chose a career. John became a plumber. Steve was an electrician. Donna became a secretary or a teacher. They trained for or found an opportunity and accepted a job. That job became their career. In short, their career chose them.

N

ow, people speak about career choice. Today, the ability to choose a career based upon passion, talent, or just plain desire has become both accepted and encouraged. It has become a right in the workplace rather than a privilege. Marsha became a groomer just before graduating high school while working at a local kennel. There were always dogs needing to be shaved and it just seemed natural to enlist her able body to help with the work. Fast

forward a decade and a half and Marsha, the teenage kennel attendant who shaved dogs, is now a working Pet Stylist. She came to the pet services industry and simply never left. Angela came to be a Pet Stylist in a different manner. She attended college following graduation and tried a few different majors. She earned a degree in Political Science but could not find viable employment that utilized her degree. After looking at different continuing education options, she stumbled across an ad for a local

grooming school, attended classes, and, following graduation, began her current career as a Groomer. There are as many different paths to starting a career as a Groomer as there are breeds of dogs to groom. Today, the job you choose becomes a defining marker for many people in outlining who you are. Your Career Identity is woven together by how you feel about your job, how others perceive you doing your job, and how well you perform in your job. The combination of these factors creates your unique professional DNA. Many pet professionals are reluctant to discuss their chosen profession outside of their usual circles. Perhaps they are fearful of judgement based upon their non– traditional employment or perceived lack of education. One of the first

steps in achieving a strong Career Identity is to develop a sense of pride in your work. Communing with fellow groomers who embody the professional persona you wish to achieve is a great start. Trade shows, seminars, continuing education, and sharing of knowledge helps you provide higher levels of service and quality to your customers and a sense of ownership in your own methods and processes. Crafting your own career identity can be as simple as taking pride in your work. Increasing your personal skills will help you become more confident and release any insecurities you may have regarding your profession. As you gain confidence in your own skills, you can begin to be more thoughtful of how others see you in your career.

Finding customers can be expensive. Even though good pet groomers are in high demand in many parts of the country, most of us still expend a sizeable amount of money to help customers find us.

W

e do this with signage for our businesses, fliers, business cards, social media efforts, telephone listings, traditional advertising such as newspaper and radio, and more. I’ve been known to bake dozens of cookies to distribute to local veterinarians along with a stack of business cards (which works great, by the way!) Advertising is costly, but it’s how we build our trade. On a recent car ride with my husband, who has spent his entire career in the business world, he mentioned something called “Girard’s Law of 250.” He went on to explain that a car salesman named Joe Girard developed this law during his long and very lucrative career selling cars. Girard was so good at his job that he was named by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s greatest retail salesman. So why is that important to groomers? Because we must sell ourselves to our customers to get them in the door and allow us to groom their pets. The basics of Girard’s Law of 250 is this, the average person knows 250 people well enough to influence their buying decision. He came up with this law after attending a Catholic funeral. At the mass, the funeral home gave out cards to each visitor with a photograph and name of the departed. Girard asked the funeral director how he knew how many cards to print out.

TO SEE IF THEY WERE SATISFIED WITH YOUR WORK The small investment of your time will pay off big because you are showing that you care.

The man told him that he had learned by experience that most funerals had around 250 people attend. Girard derived his law after considering that if the average person had 250 people who cared enough about them to pay last respects, they also had some influence over those peoples’ lives. Using this theory, he went on to sell more cars than any other salesman in history! He did this by maintaining an excellent relationship with each person he sold a car to. He reached out to them at birthdays and holidays; remembered names of their children and spouses. If they were unhappy with their purchase he did whatever he could to make them happy. Doing this built his epic sales career, and even though we are scrubbing pets, not selling cars, we can do the same thing.

Here are some ideas that will build loyalty once you have a potential customer contact you about grooming:

RETURN PHONE CALLS PROMPTLY Many of us work alone, and let voicemail pick up calls while we are working. It can be tempting to let those messages marinate a while because we are busy and tired. I know I have been guilty of just that. But when I return calls quickly I hear the appreciation in peoples’ voices, “Oh, thank you for getting back to me so fast.” If it’s a new customer, I have just made my first impression.

or two after your service to see if the people were happy. If they were, and you are trying to build your business, ask them if they would consider telling their friends and family about you. You would be surprised how many times simply asking for a referral puts the idea in a person’s mind to tell others. If they were unhappy about some aspect of your work; “His claws were still sharp and he scratched up my leg,” or “I really hoped his hair would be shorter,” invite them to come in to fix the problem. The small investment of your time will pay off big because you are showing that you care.

IF YOU HAVE A CUSTOMER COMPLAINT, DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO MAKE THEM HAPPY Many years ago, I worked as the

customer service representative for what was, at the time, the largest pet grooming wholesaling company in the country. When I was hired for the job I asked the owner, “So, what is it that you want me to do, exactly, when someone complains?” He minced no words, “MAKE them happy.” Those three little words stayed with me to this day. If someone hates the clip you put on their Bichon, offer them a free groom for their next visit. The small investment of your time and products may not only keep a regular customer coming to you, but will have the ripple effect of touching the 250 people in their circle. My husband quips, “The customer may not always be right, but the customer is always the customer.” It’s better to give away one free groom than to

lose the customer forever.

BE GRATEFUL Even if you are the greatest groomer in your area and your customers are darn lucky to have you, remember that it is their money that pays you. Thank them for their business. I had a customer with a small cocker come to me a few years ago. From chatting with him I learned that he took his dog to all the local groomers, calling around to see who could groom her first when she needed it. The dog is small and sweet, and gets zipped from nose to toes with a 7f every three months. An easy groom. When he picked the dog up I asked if she looked nice, he said she did. Then I said, “Thank you so much for bringing her to me. I enjoyed grooming her, she’s a great little dog.” I am not exaggerating when I tell you he stopped in his tracks. “No one has ever said that to me before,” he told me. And he has been bringing his nice little dog to me ever since. The essential point is this: Customers can be expensive to find, but cheap to keep. One happy customer has the potential to influence 250 people to try your services. One unhappy one can send out career-crashing ripples to that many, too. ✂

NEW RANGE OF SHAMPOOS

BEHAVIOR CLIPS

by Gary Wilkes

SELECTING A TRAINER As a groomer you cannot be completely isolated from the world of training. First and foremost, if your client has a dog behavior problem it is very important for you to be able to refer them to someone good.

26

I

f you can’t, you run the risk that the dog will no longer be in the home and you will no longer have the opportunity to groom them. Second, trainers will periodically attempt to ally themselves with you in a mutual referral relationship. That can be a very good thing if you pick the right trainer. In that spirit, I offer you some insight into a major division within dog training so that you can objectively interpret what you hear. For the last 30 years many trainers have moved to a ‘positive’ perspective on training. They assert that ‘negative’ training causes problems. They have shaped their training around that assumption and oppose trainers who do not share their bias. The essence of their rhetoric starts with referring to other trainers as ‘punishment based’ or ‘coercion based’. Considering that you use things

like loops, occasionally muzzles and manhandle dogs to facilitate bathing and grooming, you would, by their standards, be a ‘coercion based’ groomer. The underlying theme is that ‘coercion’ or ‘punishment’ causes terrible side effects. I’ll let you decide if what you do causes terrible side effects. I think it is a false dichotomy. Having handled thousands of dogs that didn’t want to be handled, I see the intelligent and often elegant application of ‘coercion’ as a major tool in insuring a polite, easy–to–handle dog. Meaning the coercion is not an end in itself, but a way to ease the dog’s resistance and give them a better life. You do it all the time. It’s called ‘handling’.

WORDS CAN AFFECT THE MARKET Ever since people coined terms like ‘punishment based’ another term emerged to help protect the

Obviously, the public thinks that someone who always uses some form of punishment is abusive. Calling someone ‘punishment based’ is a deep insult that turns the public away from an entire class of trainers. To defend themselves, those trainers coined the term ‘balanced training’. You will now hear trainers style themselves with that title, implying that they use both reinforcement and punishment with the

goal of creating a well–behaved dog. However, when you take it out of its context and just look at the term ‘balance’ you will see that this proprietary training term isn’t exactly what it suggests.

THE NATURE OF BALANCE Generally speaking, balance is the process of arranging something so that it remains in a particular relationship to its surroundings, or some

other thing. If you have a boat that is heavily weighted to one side, you recognize the problem because the boat’s relationship to the water is askew. Shifting the weight of the cargo will shift the boat’s relationship to the water and it will become in balance. While many things are as straightforward as balancing a boat by evenly distributing its cargo and ballast, some things do not fit that simple rule. For instance, to balance a teeter–totter

EQUAL WEIGHT does not automatically imply putting two kids of equal weight on either end. A teeter–totter can be balanced with two children of unequal weights by shifting the heavier kid toward the center point. The center point, called the fulcrum, doesn’t even have to be in the center of the teeter–totter. You can balance the kids in one of two ways —shift one of the kids closer to the fulcrum, or move the

fulcrum. Both solutions achieve the same result. The relative weight of the children is equalized so that they balance each other. So, balance does not mean equally weighted—it can also mean that things are distributed in a particular fashion relative to a balance point. The reason that this second type of balance is important to dog trainers is that rewards and punishments are

rarely of equal weight. A mildly pleasant experience like parking in the first parking space you see can shape your first tendency when parking your car. A single experience of having your car towed (because you didn’t look closely at the “no parking” sign) can disrupt your existing behavior completely. While you may not remember any of the parking spaces that created your

initial behavior, you will never forget the time you parked incorrectly and your car was towed. The pleasant experience of finding a place to park is far less important to you than the hassle of finding your car and paying to get it back. The breaking point between a close place to park and the risk of parking in the wrong spot is the fulcrum between which the two opposite consequences teeter. Finding balance between consequences is one of the most important training skills for all dog professionals.

AN OBJECTIVE PERSPECTIVE To be an effective trainer, the vast majority of what you do has to be ‘positive’. By definition, punishment stops behaviors. It is illogical to think that one could be successful by stopping

everything. At some point you have to create behaviors and that require ‘positive’ methods. At other junctures you will have to stop behaviors—like destroying property, threatening and attacking people, jumping up on guests, nuisance barking and a host of other unacceptable behaviors. Here’s the key to these terms. You cannot stop behaviors with ‘positive’ methods. You cannot create behaviors with exclusively ‘negative’ methods. Every effective trainer does what you do—facilitate the dog’s experience based on what it does and what it needs. There is no cruelty to using good handling to prevent a dog from biting when its nails are being trimmed. There is a form of cruelty in letting the dog get away with biting and never actually addressing a

true ‘deal breaker’ behavior. When you interview trainers to see if they can help you in your business, I suggest you forget the labels, fancy letters after their name and any other claim of credentials. Talk to them. If they don’t sound like you in their statements about ethics and practice, it’s probably a bad fit. If you hear them focus on how the dog benefits from training and how they can help you make dogs easier to groom, you’re on the right track. If they are more concerned about methods than the outcome for the dog, you may want to keep looking. The most effective trainers are results based and their goal is to help dogs live harmoniously with their owners, groomers, vets and other people. That is real balance. ✂

The REAL

DIRT on

The first thing that a person notices when they enter your salon or mobile unit is how it looks and smells. Good or bad— that first impression is never forgotten.

T

ake an in–depth look at your facility through your client’s eyes. Do you see pet excrement or smell urine outside of your establishment? Once you step inside, do you see a floor covered with dirty hair? Are used, wet towels tossed in a heap by the bathtub?

ODOR CONTROL

CLEANING

DISINFECTING

When most of us think about cleaning, we think it means getting rid of dirt, but there is a lot more to cleaning than just removing dirt. One definition of cleaning is to remove unwanted substances from a surface or environment. Those other unwanted substances can be mold spores, bacteria, viruses, germs, etc., and eliminating them is a must. Disinfecting and odor control is crucial and must be included in your overall cleaning program.

Even if your facility looks spotlessly clean, if it doesn’t smell fresh and inviting, it’s a real turn-off for people. We have all walked into places that smell less than pleasant. Instantly, you want to limit the amount of time you spend there, and you are unlikely to return.

In addition to cleaning and deodorizing, disinfecting is essential for everyone in the pet care industry. Not only will it help eliminate the transmission of disease between the pets that you groom, but also those diseases that can be passed from pets to humans. If you or a member of your team has ever contracted ringworm or have gotten a staph infection from a pet that was groomed in your facility, you will never forget how important

sanitation is. Or if a pet develops canine (kennel) cough or canine influenza, and it is traced to your facility, you could experience a huge loss in business and your reputation could be permanently affected.

DO YOUR RESEARCH You want all the products you use to clean, disinfect, and deodorize to work well, be cost effective, and do no harm to the pets, people, or surfaces that they come in contact with. Did you know that if a wet or damp pet is placed on a surface that has not been rinsed completely, harsh chemical residue can reactivate? While pets are in your holding cages, they may lick the cage surfaces and ingest cleaning chemicals. And, that residue can also be absorbed through their pads. Also, if you use a compartment dryer, pets can inhale the constantly recirculating particles. Be aware that the strong odors of some products may be overwhelming to pets and cause them stress. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the correct dilution rate, the amount of contact time required for effective cleaning and disinfection, and the thoroughness of rinsing. Never mix multiple products together as it can produce dangerous consequences. Did you know that mixing bleach with vinegar produces chlorine gas? And, mixing bleach and ammonia produces toxic vapors called chloramine? Both of these combinations (even at low concentrations) can cause coughing, breathing problems, burning, watery eyes, and even chest pain.

BEST WAYS TO CLEAN When you clean and disinfect surfaces such as grooming tables and crates, it is recommended that you use a bottle with a ‘squirt top’ (like those on dish washing liquid bottles) rather than one that sprays a mist. This great-

ly reduces the amount of product that is aerosolized into the environment, which helps protect the respiratory health of both groomers and pets. Cleaning should be done continuously, not put off until the end of the day. A disinfectant or cleaner will work best when it is applied directly after soiling or contamination. For example, you should clean a holding cage as soon as possible upon taking an animal out, instead of waiting until you are going to put another pet into it. Once again, you must follow the manufacturer’s directions for use for the product to perform as it was intended. Disinfectants require a certain amount of contact time for optimal effectiveness. All of the products you use in your facility should be handled with care and properly stored. Germicidal

and cleaning products do not have an unlimited shelf life. They can lose their efficacy. Always check the expiration date on every product before you use it.

SAFETY It’s important that any cleaning products you use are effective and work well, but you also want to make sure that they are safe to use and nontoxic to you and the pets in your care. Now, many organic and chemical free, natural cleaning products are available that are safe for pets, people, and their surroundings. Environmentally friendly products are often less harsh on the surfaces that you are cleaning. Indoor air can be five times more polluted than outdoor air. Improving the air quality in your salon greatly reduces the chance of transmission of

airborne micro-organisms and other respiratory related health issues. Lots of facilities have found that using air purification systems that incorporate Ultraviolet Light (UV) will significantly reduce the amount of bacteria, yeast, mold, and viruses. And did you know that how you do your salon laundry is important, too? For thorough cleaning and disinfecting, your shop towels should be washed in hot water and you should add bleach or another disinfecting agent to each load. Then they should be dried on the hottest setting of your dryer. Your grooming clothes should also be washed and sanitized regularly. There are few things more important to an owner than the peace of mind they have when their pet is in a safe environment and is being well

cared for. Now that you have the real lowdown on ‘dirt’, make cleaning,

t the same time we want to keep our facilities clean and sanitary, we do not want to breathe in noxious chemicals several times a day. There are many studies that link long-term use of such products to chronic health concerns. However, we still have many choices.

DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN CLEANING & DISINFECTING Cleaning removes the most common vectors of transmission of contagions: the biological. Biological include hair, dander, dirt, blood, urine, and feces. Contagions are bacteria, viruses, and spores that

36

have the potential to spread disease. Cleaners do not necessarily disinfect. Disinfecting disables the contagion to prevent cross contamination. But disinfectants work better on clean surfaces.

STORE BOUGHT CLEANING PRODUCTS As cleaning products are not for human consumption, the terms “Green” or “Natural” may not mean much as the terms are not regulated. There may be “greenwashing” going on the label. Greenwashing is a term used to describe a product as natural and healthy, when in reality it’s not. It sounds good, but that’s

it. Nothing more than marketing. And to top it off, US manufacturers are not required by law to list all ingredients. Sound familiar? It’s important to read labels and visit websites. The EPA has a program called Safer Choice. In order to be on their list, manufacturers must follow strict guidelines. You can look up companies at https://www.epa. gov/saferchoice/products to easily find safer alternatives.

cannot metabolize alcohol, it dries almost instantly and without residue, therefore it can be used around cats once the alcohol has dried. If used as a disinfectant, the surface must remain wet for 10 minutes.

PORTABLE STEAM CLEANERS The reservoir is filled with water and the steam cleaner heats the water hot enough to produce steam. Unlike many liquid cleaners, a steam cleaner can get into porous surfaces such as grout and floor and wall seams.

50/50 VINEGAR TO WATER MIX Vinegar is mildly acidic and as such has anti-bacterial properties, however, the EPA does not list it as a disinfectant. It is my cleaner of choice. Vinegar is also abrasive and breaks up dirt and oils. If you want it to smell better, then add some orange or lemon rinds to the bottle. You can add essential oils as well, but make sure cats do not have access to those surfaces. Oils may leave a residue that can be absorbed through cats’ pads.

as a cleaner. However, hydrogen peroxide is listed as antibacterial and antiviral from the EPA. In order to take advantage of those disinfecting properties it must: 1. Be undiluted in the brown bottle. Once opened or used in clear containers will start the degradation process. Hydrogen peroxide will turn into water. 2. Remain on the surface for 20 minutes.

SOAP Plain old soap and water, as it removes the biological, may cause transmission of disease when washing our hands and rinsing down the tub in between pets.

NORWEX MICROFIBER CLOTHS These are specially treated cloths that lift dirt instead of moving it around. They just require spraying the area first with water, then wiping with the cloth. The manufacturer makes antibacterial and antiviral claims as silver is used in the treatment process. But, I don’t know how accurate that is or for how long the cloths keep those properties. They do a great job of cleaning without the mess of paper towels. My van almost

AIR CLEANERS To efficiently clean the air without neurochemicals; air circulation fans, plants, and salt lamps are effective. Effective air circulation needs intake and outtake fans. The larger the facility, the more complicated this becomes and you may need to hire an HVAC company to install a system. Plants do their thing by releasing oxygen and absorbing VOC’s (volatile organic compounds.) VOC’s are the harsh chemicals found in paints, aerosols, and certain cleaners. Salt

lamps neutralize positively charged bacteria, dust, and pollen when they are heated by lamp or candle. The heat attracts water in the air and separates the salt ions. There are now more loose negatively charged chloride ions that can bind with those positively charged bacteria in the air. That’s the flaking you see on the counter around salt lamps.

ENZYMATIC CLEANERS These spray cleaners utilize enzymes to break down bacteria and dirt. In addition, they penetrate porous surfaces such as grout, floor and wall seams.

our staff checked the animal in and placed it in one of the banks of cages in close proximity of other pets. The animal has been there a while waiting for the bather to come for him. It’s the trained eye of that bather/brusher that notices something’s wrong with the pet. They alert you. Thoughts race through your mind that all pets in your care are now exposed to it! Let’s take a deep breath and look at this problem. Yes, Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis (Kennel Cough) is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can run rapid in boarding facilities, dog shows, and doggie day-care centers, but it’s not as likely to spread in the grooming environment if we are on the lookout for it. This is one example of why it’s so important to know what is walking through your door and how cleaning our salons is so important. For the sake of this article we are going to focus on the felines in our businesses not dogs, even though I love them too. I make it a point to speak with each owner during my five minute assessment, while their cat is still in the carrier, about the condition of skin and coat. I take the time to observe the cat looking for signs of illness, lumps, bumps and physical sensitivities. If the cat is sneezing, has congested nasal passages or just looks and/or acts “off”, all telltale signs of illness, I may recommend a trip to a veterinarian based on my assumptions. Notice I didn’t say diagnosis. In some instances, owners may not recognize the signs of illness until it’s too late and they bring us a sick feline. It’s important to remember that for the safety of the cat, yourself and that of your staff, you have the right to refuse grooming of any cat.

Cleanliness goes a long way in preventing illness. We can do this by keeping our salons in tiptop shape and as sanitized as possible. I always do a heavy cleaning at the end of each day. There are some owners out there that think groomers are comparable to veterinarians. Believing that we will diagnose and remedy their pets’ health problems. We need to educate our clients for the health and safety of their cats. In doing so, you should recommend a veterinarian visit for any problematic issues you come across while the cat is in your care, especially if disease is suspected. In my business, I groom by appointment only and have no more than one cat in my salon at any one time. If I have a run over and someone hasn’t picked up their cat after their

designated time, I have a holding room for that cat. No cats are in the same room at the same time. I know that it’s not possible to do this in the larger, busier grooming establishments, but because diseases can be transmitted from animal to animal, we should do our utmost in keeping animals away from each other. It goes without saying that pets should not share a water dish or litter pan in your salon. Even though transmission of diseases are rather low in the grooming salon, they can be passed on by saliva, feces and projectile nasal discharge. Disease transmission in the

grooming environment can be reduced even further by keeping all cats in their own carriers, not stacking them on top of each other, keeping the owners there until you do a five minute assessment, and then work on one cat at a time. Cleanliness goes a long way in preventing illness. We can do this by keeping our salons in tiptop shape and as sanitized as possible. I always do a heavy cleaning at the end of each day. I use a disinfectant that can be used and wiped away after a few minutes; totally eliminating the possibility of allowing a cat near chemicals. I also sanitize my

My clientele includes special needs cats such as having asthma, diabetes, heart failure, renal failure, blind, deaf, 3-legged, FIV and FIP positives…the list goes on and on. I take pride in how I run my business and I am a trusted authority to my clients. I always ask about any medical issues including infectious diseases and if I need to know about medications that may be necessary to administer while their pet is in my care. They give me the inhalers for the asthma clients, corn syrup for the diabetics, etc…and I’ve been professionally taught how to use them. If owners stay for the grooming, they witness me disinfecting my tools and table after their cat is safely back in its carrier. This reassures them that I really care about my salons hygiene. I also switch my grooming smocks between cats. In addition to constantly cleaning my work area, I have air filters running 24/7, and fresh outside ventilation. Many of my clients have complimented me on my salon’s cleanliness and it make me feel good to know I’m doing my best for my customers and that they appreciate me. In this industry our name is our business. Nothing will kill your salon faster than negative word of mouth about your service and uncleanliness. We need to keep our reputations as impeccable as we can. I promise, if you take the few extra steps needed to spruce up and disinfect your salon, you will be complimented by way of happy return clients and their furry kids. ✂

Best The

Cleaning

Products for Your Salon E by Chris Quinlan e

The art of being a groomer is to make pets look and smell great. But how you’re grooming shop looks and smells are top criteria pet owners use when deciding whether to return for future visits.

C

leaning with the right products every day will create an environment that both pet and owner will be glad to return to, over and over again. Isn’t that the goal; to have healthy, happy customers that come back over and over again? Cleaning is a repetitive process that needs to be done every day to get the best results. Just like brushing our teeth or taking a shower regularly, we need to just do it. The simpler we make cleaning,

48

the more likely it will end up getting done every day. In an effort to keep it simple, we want to use one cleaner for all of our daily cleaning. The cleaner also should be a disinfectant. Read the label. If the label says Detergent, Disinfectant, Deodorizer then you have the right one. These cleaner disinfectants come in both ready to use and concentrated formulas. A ready to use cleaner is convenient, but may cost many times more money than using a concentrate

that you mix yourself. A concentrate is more environmentally friendly because you have far less post-consumer waste going into the landfill. Basically you’re not buying the bottle over again every time you run out. Assign one person the responsibility of mixing the cleaner concentrate properly with water or utilize a mixing station that does it for you. A mixing station will insure it’s being mixed properly and will save you lots of time. Get rid of the “glug–glug”,

“more is better method”. A mixing station will cut your product consumption in half compared to mixing by hand, and creates a safer, more OSHA compliant work place. When diluted correctly, your cleaner should cost around 25 cents a gallon. Make sure you have proper labeling on your spray bottles and Safety Data Sheets on file.

Here are some bleach facts: • Not a cleaner. • Requires pre-cleaning. • Extremely corrosive & destructive • Reactive with organic substances like poop and pee as well as other chemicals. • Has vapors that are very unhealthy to breathe. • Loses ability to kill germs quickly. • Has a very short shelf life. • No drain opening capabilities. Most of your Clorox brand surface disinfecting products don’t contain

bleach because of these reasons. Other products are recommended for specific situations. For detail cleaning we would want a stronger cleaner like a degreaser. A citrus based degreaser is safe yet very effective for removing build–up in areas like the bathing tub. Citrus based degreasers work really well for the ring around the tub. For glass cleaning, an oxy glass cleaner works best. For drain maintenance and odor control the safest and most effective products are bacterial enzyme producing products. The bacteria will liquify organics like food and fecal matter clogging the drain without the hazards that come

with acid drain openers. Bacterial enzyme products are the safest most effective for odor removal and control on all surfaces, especially soft surfaces like carpet, upholstery, clothing, or synthetic turf with no environmental impact. These products are even used as an effective skunk remover, safe enough to use right on the pet. Be sure to keep your grooming shops looking and smelling as incredible as the pets you groom. Your customers will love you for it! ✂

HOW DO YOU OPER AT

g n i t i r anW Operations Manual FOR YOUR GROOMING

BUSINESS

E by Melissa Viera e

Writing an operations manual or a standard operating procedures manual can seem like an overwhelming task, but clearly defining the process of everything that goes on within your business is important for both large and small businesses, and even the solopreneur.

A

n operations manual serves as a guide and covers every detail about what goes on inside the business. From carrying out each job, to how to handle situations that might arise, the operations manual will cover it. You might think that you do not need at operations manual if your business is small or even if your work alone, but if you plan to grow, an operations manual is a must. Even if you do

52

not have a big team, writing an operations manual forces you to think about every detail involved in your business and different ways to handle situations that might not have come up yet. Whether you choose to hire outside help to assist in the writing and editing of your manual or do it yourself, there is one major key to being successful and that is to imagine that you are explaining to someone with no experience how to perform the

job duties and handle every situation the way you would. If you were away from your business and you had someone else handling it, how would you tell them what to do if your only communication was the operations manual? Use clear and simple terms and do not leave anything out. Begin writing your manual by outlining everything that typically goes on in a normal day. This involves things like outlining your

intake process, each step involved in the grooming process, whether you begin with pre–work, place the pet in a holding area, or put them right into the tub. Along with the grooming process, outline how you handle phone calls, walk–ins, emails and everything else that goes on every day. Every process should be broken down into steps from grooming to cleaning, and sales and customer service. Additionally, a process should be outlined for things like ordering supplies and maintaining records. There might be things that arise from time to time that you do not think about on a regular basis. For example, how would you want your employees to handle it if someone comes in asking for the business to participate in a community fundraising event by making a basket for an auction? You could

Outlining what to do in the case of an emergency and how to handle delicate situations is a must. ALL THINGS PAW

by Michelle Knowles

FOR THE LOVE OF PAWS:

BASIC PAW CARE

Feet are the foundation of movement. Paws come into contact with every surface they touch, whether outside or inside, and keeping them in tip top shape is important for the health and well–being of the pets in our care.

R

ed, sore or irritated feet are one of the most common issues seen today at the vet office. Many pets are stoic and don’t show pain or discomfort even when there is a problem. While there are numerous issues that can happen with and to pet paws, we will discuss issues that can be soothed with topicals and products that are available to the grooming professional. Let’s consider the anatomy of the foot. The skin of the paw pads is very thick and made to withstand various

56

temperatures and uneven terrain. The pads with the nail are called digital pads (affectionately known as “toe beans”) while the weight bearing pad is called the metacarpal pad. There is also a pad on the inner “wrist” called the carpal pad that is used as a stopper of sorts. The pads themselves are thick with layers of tough skin, a layer of fat underneath the skin, and are filled with a network of blood vessels that help to regulate the temperature of the feet. The skin inside the area

between the pads contains many exocrine sweat glands (exocrine means that they sweat directly onto the surface of the skin). Many animals also grow hair in this area to protect this delicate sebaceous zone. There may or may not be an extra dew claw or hoof claw. In some breeds it is often removed when the pups are quite young to prevent snagging or other injuries later in life. The essential nail clipping should be performed so that the nails do not touch the floor. This

is important because long nails can impede the way the foot moves on the floor and can eventually deform the foot if not kept manicured. Hair grows between the pads and toes on many breeds. Cats grow thick tufts of hair on their paws to muffle the sound of their footsteps while hunting and while some dogs grow this hair for the same reason, both species grow this hair to protect the delicate parts of the foot. Domesticated animals like cats and dogs that live with us in our homes don’t really need to be quiet for hunting purposes, but they still require the protection of some hair on their feet. When preparing the paws for grooming, it is always a good idea to look at the feet to determine if there are foreign objects stuck in the hair, any matts, or something more sinister like foxtails, cuts or abrasions, before the bathing procedure is started so that foot soaks and clay masks can be employed to soothe the damage. Any injuries or damage to the footpads or inner feet should always be documented and the owner should always be informed. I always recommend that any issues with the feet should be referred to a veterinarian for diagnosis. Many moons ago when I was an apprentice, I was taught to scoop out all the hair from between the pads in order to achieve a finished foot. Many years and much research later, I now know that some hair should be left in order to protect the glands in the skin folds. Many irritated paws may simply be suffering from being scraped too closely by the clipper blade. It is now my practice to clip the hair even with the pads as long as there are no matts present. Matts must be removed to prevent infection or other issues. These pads often benefit from a

In the case of short coat breeds, there may not be thick hair to protect them. In these cases, foot soaks before the bath and nourishing oils applied to the feet after the groom are the best way to give these feet some protection. I know, I can hear the poodle people shouting the alarm from here, what about clean feet? Some breed standards require that the feet be shaved. There is a protocol to shav-

ing a new poodle or other breed that wants clean feet. Start with the grain of the hair, and use a closer blade as the animal becomes used to the procedure. Many times, a new puppy will get “razor burn” from a freshly clipped face or clean feet. This can sometimes be avoided by making sure that the process is gradual from a #10 blade to a #30, or whatever blade you choose to use. Any time that close shaving is applied, a good rule of thumb is to keep

these areas oiled to give the newly naked skin some protection until the pet is used to the procedure and the skin has time to thicken. The oils that work best are Emu oil, it is colorless, odorless and very beneficial to skin, and Ginkgo oil which is anti–inflammatory and helps skin circulation. As groomers, we see many things stuck in the paws or extreme irritation. Many times, our clients will let us know that there is an issue during drop off. Among the things that you

All of these issues can be helped by a mineral foot soak before the bath and nourishing with oils after the groom is finished and before the pet goes home. Are you starting to see the pattern? Some of the things that you can do for extra services are paw massage, foot soaks, pawdicures, and masks. The paws are subject to the toxins of asphalt, road chemicals, harsh household cleaners and small, sharp pieces of debris that can cause

cuts, scrapes and abrasions. Some paws are even unlucky enough to be attacked by foxtails, a type of spear grass that has a spiky seed head that can burrow into the foot and through the leg causing untold pain and discomfort. This type of issue is something that a vet needs to help with so make sure that your clients are aware of the urgency of the problem. Cracked pads need extra moisturizer to keep them supple. Cracked pads invite infection in the exposed parts of the skin. Many times, I will send the client home with “pad lo-

Many of us go to the salon to get our nails and toes done, these services are a healthy part of personal hygiene. The pets in our care deserve the same thoughtful services. While we are enjoying our pampering, we need to remember to love the feet of the pets we care for also. So, get yourself a mani pawdi and offer them to your clients’ pets too! ✂

Hand Stripping ADDING

TO YOUR SERVICES

Hi Michell. I had a customer call and ask me to hand strip their wire—haired Dachshund. I explained that I don’t know how to do hand stripping. I have watched videos about it but never actually tried it. She was very persuasive. She had always done the dog herself but was incapacitated by a wrist injury. The owner assured me that she did not expect perfection. I gave it a try. It actually turned out pretty good. Now I am interested in doing more. What is the best way to learn? What should I charge? Are there any pitfalls that I should be aware of ?

H

i Jane. Hand stripping is a great skill to have! Even if you find you do not have much call for it in your shop, it is good to fully understand the process. As you grow the skill you can also grow a clientele. One hand strip every other day is a nice goal. This will give your hand plenty of time to recover between hand strips. There are some who believe that hand stripping can be hard on your

62

hands. Like any other task we do in grooming, we must be aware of how it feels and change up our daily tasks to avoid overuse injuries. First know what kinds of dogs could and/or should be hand stripped. In the pet grooming industry it is not a simple matter of a breed list, like it is in the show world. For example, even though miniature Schnauzers would be on the list to be hand stripped, we rarely see them hand stripped in our

GroomertoGroomer.com

pet grooming salons. And rarely do they retain any of their wiry texture after being clipped a time or two. Therefore, hand stripping them in this situation is typically not feasible. On the other hand, if a customer calls with a puppy mini Schnauzer that has not yet been clipped, you could try your hand at hand stripping the coat. It takes a bit of knowledge to be able to look at the coat and determine if it is a good candidate

Keep in mind that dogs have less sensitivity in their hide than we do in our skin and the coats you will be pulling are meant to be pulled. Once you have developed good techniques it is not uncommon for dogs to sleep through hand stripping. for hand stripping. For this, a mentor would be a good resource. Also in the case of learning hand stripping, the customer themselves might be a good resource. For example, if they have recently moved to your area with a dog that is used to being hand stripped it is a pretty good bet that the coat is strippable. Next, learn how to properly manipulate the hide or skin of the dog. With every hair pulled you must hold

64

the hide taught to oppose the pull. Keep in mind that dogs have less sensitivity in their hide than we do in our skin and the coats you will be pulling are meant to be pulled. Once you have developed good techniques it is not uncommon for dogs to sleep through hand stripping. Learning how to properly manipulate the hide of the dog is best learned by private lessons, classes at trade shows and educational videos.

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 36 Ed 8 • August 2017

GroomertoGroomer.com

You are already doing it, to some degree, when keeping the hide tight to oppose the brush when brushing a mat out of a dog. In the case of hand stripping, it is important that the skin not move at all when the coat is pulled. The firmer you keep the hide the more comfortable it is for the dog. Not to mention you will get a smoother finish. As for tools and products, to start you will need latex gloves (if you are not allergic), some grooming powder, a lava stone, and a set of stripping knives in fine, medium and course. Gloves are helpful when you are learning because they protect your hand from getting blisters. They also help with gripping the hair. If you do not want to wear the whole glove you can get latex finger sleeves instead. Powder should only be used before the bath on pet dogs. There are several brands. They are white and they are designed to help you grip the coat. Show dogs have powder and all kinds of other chalks and products in their hair when being shown. For pets though, a clean dog is generally what the owners want. Lava stone is a great beginner tool. It comes in a block and can be scored and broken to any size you like. It flakes off while you use it. Not to worry, it is inexpensive and will not hurt the dog or make the dog smell (it smells like sulfur). Pluck the longest hairs between your thumb and the stone. Again, watch videos,

go to classes and take private lessons to learn the exact techniques. Knives are generally for thinning a coat where stones are more for top trimming. But they can both be used for either task. It is best to have a variety of tools because you might find that one tool works great on one wire-haired Dachshund and is practically useless on another depending on coat type. I have as many stripping knives as I do scissors. When pulling coat be sure not to move your wrist. Do all of your pulling from the elbow and shoulder. Flipping your wrist may result in damage to the coat and possible overuse injuries for yourself. When you are learning hand stripping you might want to consider

discounting your service. The discount would be to take the pressure off of you to produce a perfect groom. You will make mistakes. You will end up with blotchy results. You might even not be able to finish a dog in one appointment and that is ok. Hand stripping is an advanced skill. Like everything else you have learned about dog grooming, the beginning stages of learning can be tedious for the dog and the groomer. Be patient. It would not be uncommon for your first hand strips to take you half a day. As you get faster and have perfected your skill your prices should come into a range where you are making the same per hour as you would for any other service. Or possibly more for a specialty service. The service is a money maker

once you develop some speed and skill. There is so much more to be said about hand stripping. This is a very, very basic overview. Classes at trade shows, videos, mentors and private lessons are a must for perfecting the skill. Enjoy the learning process! ✂ I am a multi-Best-In-Show and Best-AllAround groomer. airn Terriers rank somewhere mid–range of all breed registrations with AKC. Even though not a common breed, Cairn Terriers have graced the silver screen as far back as the mid 1930’s, making notable appearances in dozens of films along side such blockbuster stars as Shirlee Temple, Judy Garland, John Wayne, and Nicole Kidman, to name a few. Cairns certainly earn a spot on a groomer’s Bread & Butter list. Many of the techniques shown can be used for show dogs, however this segment is geared towards making the pet look their best. The model, although formerly shown, is a pet. Handstripping will help to keep the rich color and harsh texture and provide natural looking, easy to maintain coat that is wash and wear. are achieved when completed prior to the bath. Pads, sanitary, nail trimming and ear cleaning are all part of the prep work. A pet that is handstripped may not even require bathing, but our Bread & Butter clients usually prefer a freshly washed pet upon pick up. Use a quality conditioning shampoo and dry the coat to lay flat, following the coat growth direction. You can then make quick work of completing the groom by detailing. Fig.1) Begin the handstripping process at the shoulder, throat and fore chest. Secure the loose skin on the sides of the neck and strip following the coat growth direction. It is important to hold the knife perpendicular to the coat while stripping. Angling the blade while stripping, unlike carding undercoat, will cut the coat. On a blown coat such as this one, almost all of the coat must come out as it is dead coat. Fig.2) Next, strip the side coat at the flanks and loin.
