f you are a groomer, you know how oddly satisfying it is to scrub a dog clean, noticing the dirty water going down the drain as you do so. You know you are doing your job when you see clumps of coat flying out while drying a golden retriever, or when a thick nail flings to the floor after you clip it.The dogs don’t have to say thank you because the way they push their head into you as you clean their ears, or the way they seem to move much lighter and merrier when all the dirt and the loose coat is gone, is enough. When a dog comes to see you after enjoying a summer of swims in the salty ocean and romping through the woods, you can’t wait to get to work and make them clean again. Even after bathing

and working on a dog for a long time, a professional groomer’s eye can still find places that could use some touching up before the owner arrives. A spritz of finishing spray, a bandana tied neatly around the neck, and a damp towel to wipe away any loose hairs on the muzzle before the owner walks in to pick up their pet are just some of the extra finishing touches that make your work stand out. A groomer’s job is to make an animal cleaner. Sounds pretty straightforward, but what if—as a groomer—you had to do just the opposite? Instead of working hard to make dogs as clean as can be, what if you had to think creativity to make dogs look dirtier, homeless, or as if they have been eating out of the trash? As crazy as it

What makes her job unique is that, while she trains the basics, she also trains her animals to perform specific cued behaviors to meet the director’s request for the roles they play. Not only does she train animals for acting roles, but she is also the groomer for the animal actors she works with. sounds, some groomers’ jobs aren’t about making every pet look freshly groomed. Just like human actors and actresses have to fit many roles, so do animal actors. It is the job of the groomers on set to make sure the animals look their part, no matter what that part might be; from champion show dog, to homeless street dog. April Gray, owner of Graymatter Dog Training, may not always be the
one in the spotlight because she is busy instructing animals from behind the camera. Gray is an animal trainer, groomer, and mom. What makes her job unique is that, while she trains the basics, she also trains her animals to perform specific cued behaviors to meet the director’s request for the roles they play. When Gray was a child she adored animals. From the time she was born up until she was ten, she had her Doberman Pinscher, named Queenie faithfully by her side. “She started my passion for dogs,” says Gray. Even as a young child, Gray was interested in going above and beyond for her pets. At around age five, she discovered and began studying breed standards, and it wasn’t long after that she began grooming.

“I made the decision to follow my dreams. I started training my Border terrier and within three months we had an audition for Marvel's Antman.” –April Gray

“I first started grooming my Miniature Schnauzer when I was 10– years–old,” says Gray. Her own pets weren’t her only clients. When she started grooming the pets of friends, her love for grooming only grew. In 2004, Gray went on to further hone her grooming skills by attending a grooming academy. “Grooming is a natural stress relief for me,” explains Gray. “It brings me real joy and keeps me focused on the positive side of life.” Gray’s interest in training and grooming animals for movies and commercials was, for a long time, only a dream, but a major change in her life would motivate her to do more of the things she finds joy in. “Three years ago I was diagnosed with heart failure,” Gray shares. “I had no clue how long I would

live with my condition. I made the decision to follow my dreams. I started training my Border terrier and within three months we had an audition for Marvel's Antman. We didn't get the job but I was hooked.” Gray’s pets now include five dogs, two cats, and a rabbit. She works with them daily to prepare them for their jobs. “I train them twice a day between five to fifteen minutes,” says Gray. “I incorporate a lot of play and fun in our training sessions.” Gray prefers to use clicker training for teaching her animals behaviors, from the simple ones to the very complicated ones. The clicker is used as a marker to let the animal know when they have done something right (whatever it is that the trainer is looking for). They hear the click

which tells them they got it right, and then they earn a reward. Gray finds that capturing is a very effective way of getting difficult to train behaviors. For example, if she needs to train an animal to sneeze or scratch on cue, she would start by clicking and rewarding when the animal does it naturally. There are many behaviors that Gray’s animals can perform on cue and the list is always growing. “They all know basic to advance on and off lead obedience,” says Gray. “I teach each puppy show business basics like head down, speak, go to mark, and a solid stay,” she explains. “I also teach them lots of fun behaviors like skateboarding, itch, sneeze, whine, crawl, sit–pretty, play dead, hoop jumps, high five, wave, and dancing.”
When it comes to grooming the animal actors, Gray has to be creative to make sure that her animals fit the part. Her advice for groomers working on animal actors is to know what the director is looking for and have knowledge about products to get the desired look. “Set grooming may include making a dog look homeless. Know what products you can safely use to dirty up their coat,” says Gray. “Experiment and send them different looks to choose from. Touch up coats in between shots." Gray emphasizes the importance of being professional on set. “Stay quiet, listen to the crew and stay out of the way of the trainers and human talent.” The list of jobs and accomplishments that her animals have had is

E-mail: rebecca@barkleigh.com always growing. “My Aussie, Wyatt, nailed his first commercial at five– months–old. He recently made a commercial for Tractor Supply Company,” says Gray. Working with her own pets for potential acting jobs is something that Gray enjoys, not just for the chance of seeing her animals with big roles, but for the challenge, fun, and bonding time that comes with all of the time spent training. The joy that the work brings her is a big part of what inspires her to keep working hard, but she is also deeply inspired by her husband and two sons. “My boys love animals as much as I do. I hope at least one follows in my footsteps.” The work Gray does is fun, but certainly not as easy as it might look when you see an animal effortlessly doing their job in a movie or show. “Training is hard work and sometimes the shoots are long and tedious but the rewards are well worth the effort,” says Gray. Daily training is important, but it has to be fun for the animals. “Don’t overdo it,” she says. Gray also shares that anyone hoping to land a role for their pet should keep pet photos and resumes up–to–date. Making the decision to follow her dreams has opened the door to many new experiences, joy, and memories for Gray. When thinking about grooming careers, the typical thought a person likely has is that of a pet groomer, but there are other types of groomers as well, like groomers for animal actors. The next time you see an animal in a movie, take a look at their grooming and imagine what it took to achieve the look. ✂

ASK THE GROOMING TUTOR by Michell Evans
Michell, I work in a very busy shop with lots of groomers, bathers and dogs. It is fairly chaotic. I work hard to keep my dogs under control and comfortable at all times, but I struggle. I know it is possible because when I watch videos the dogs are calm and they just stand there. I am so tired of wrestling with dogs all day long. I can’t get help from my co-workers because they let the dogs do anything they want. Do you have any advice on how to get my dogs to cooperate?
—SANDY H.
H
i Sandy. I am sorry it has taken me so long to answer your question. I have been pondering whether to include it in my column at all. This is a very hard subject to write or speak about because no matter what is said, there will be someone who feels that your method—whatever that might be—is cruel or inhumane. If you want help without

judgement, consider private or semi– private lessons with any number of teachers and mentors in our industry who would be happy to assist you in learning better dog handling skills. Working with a teacher on the very dogs that are challenging might be the key to your success. Fifty percent of the work that goes into a safe and beautifully groomed dog is up to the dog doing its part.

The other fifty percent is the groomer doing theirs. Think of the grooming process as a job for the dog. If the dog were to go to an obedience class or herding trial, learn a dance routine or sniff for drugs at the airport, they would be required to behave in a certain way during that time. It is your job to teach the dog how to behave when doing its job. They are to stand up, face forward,

counter-balance and support their own weight when you pick up a limb and keep their head out of your way. No problem, right? This is easy for some dogs and very difficult for others, however they all have to do it. You are asking them to relinquish control of their body parts in a systematic order. Be kind and keep your wits about you. If you use your brain to outsmart them you will not have to use your body to wrestle them. Here are a few things to work on: LET THEM CHOOSE HOW MUCH PRESSURE IS APPLIED Work to develop your skill in the area of holding. Learn to only apply pressure when necessary. For example, when a dog is pulling or kicking, you will naturally squeeze harder but you MUST remember to immediately loosen your grip when they stop. Don’t let go, just loosen. This teaches them that they can choose how much pressure is applied. They will almost always choose less pressure! This is especially true for heads and feet. Typically when the inexperienced groomer shaves foot pads they either grip the leg as if they were going to lift the dog’s entire body weight with one hand, or they are scared to hang on at all. As they develop, they learn how much pressure is appropriate. As they develop further, they learn how to use pressure as an incentive for the dog to choose to cooperate. At no time should the dog be in pain, sometimes very frustrated that the usual tricks are backfiring, but never in pain!

OPPOSITE
For example, if you are holding a front leg and the dog is sitting down and pulling with all its might, maintain your hold on that leg and use your other hand
OF WHAT THEY WANT to move them into a standing position. a dog’s leg, they will almost always pull back slightly to regain balance and get a sense of how much control they still maintain. Give them that. Don’t let go. Simply move with them as they test it out. Then gently pull the leg into the position you need to get the job done. This is more of a cooperation than a mugging. Also, don’t just grab the leg. Smooth your hand down to the point of lifting, and
then lift. Don’t snatch, its rude. This is especially true for legs and tails. GIVE THEM THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT THEY WANT For example, if you are holding a front leg and the dog is sitting down and pulling with all its might, maintain your hold on that leg and use your other hand to move them into a standing position. Now,
instead of gaining what they want, which is control of the front leg, they have actually lost even more control, because standing is a more vulnerable position. They got the opposite of what they wanted. Sometimes this takes help. If it is a Yorkie, you can probably get it done on your own. If it is a German Shepherd, you may need someone else to stand the dog up while you maintain control of the front leg.

And possibly the slaughter of your business on the front page of the newspaper, a vet bill, and your integrity. Another example would be to push when they pull. When they are pulling to get you to stop doing their nails, try pushing in a short burst. Again, don’t let go. This will slightly knock them off balance and it is most definitely the opposite of what they want. This gives them information which allows them to choose which way they would like to behave. CAN GROOMERS
TEAM UP WITH
Veterinary
Clinics
Win? and
E by Demian Dressler, DVM e
H
ave you been thinking of creative ways to start a new grooming business, or move into a new location, and make it a home run? Some of the most successful groomers have partnered with other businesses that have large numbers of pet–owning clients. And veterinary clinics can be a perfect match for your new venture. But what are the ways to make this a winning relationship, and what are common pitfalls to avoid? In this article, we give you a detailed, nuts–and–bolts blueprint to take out the guesswork—and help make your new career chapter satisfying and successful, from the beginning.
20
Teaming up with a vet can be a great opportunity. One advantage is that a new grooming business does not have to build a client base from scratch. Vet clients are already in the habit of bringing their pets to the veterinary practice. If a vet practice is the location for a new grooming business, that groomer has a ton of built-in leverage; client convenience and foot traffic. In today’s busy world, convenience matters. Clients love it when a pet can have both its vet and groomer needs taken care of, all in one trip. This can very quickly help the new groomer get a whole lot of business. Veterinary clients are often in

need of professional groomers, and can be invited to take advantage of your grooming service. Instead of advertising to the general public, the vet practice can focus on their existing clientele. Then, everyone that is hearing the news has a pet, and usually takes good care of their four–legged family member. This can make the grooming promotion very successful and efficient. Vets are usually located in pet– friendly areas, and the neighboring businesses are used to having animals around. There are already kennels and cage space in the facility that can easily be used for grooming pets. The lobby and animal holding
One of the best ways to predict whether a vet business will be dependable and speedy in your grooming promotion is to look at other promotions they have done. areas are normally nice and clean, and the vet staff are used to being professional with the clients. So, partnering with a veterinary clinic can be a very powerful success formula for a groomer. However, it needs to be done in the right way, or you could end up with some serious headaches. There are a number of
things to consider before signing on, so let’s take a look at these next. First, you want to be sure that the vet practice will follow through on promoting your business. Vets are very busy, and when it comes time for action, you don’t want delays! One of the best ways to predict whether a vet business will be

dependable and speedy in your grooming promotion is to look at other promotions they have done. Is the clinic willing to host a grand opening event for your services? Are they active on social media like Facebook? Do they run other campaigns? Do they send out promotional mailers to their clients?

21
Are fliers or brochures available for the general public? Have they run radio advertising? Do they have on-site promotions that are visible to their clients? By researching what the veterinary clinic is already doing to reach its clients, you can tell what they would do for a groomer, too. Another good idea is to see
whether the veterinary clinic is high quality. Since your reputation and that of the veterinary practice would be connected, you want to be sure you can be proud of your colleagues. This check–up can be done in a couple of ways. A call or a visit to the veterinary practice is an excellent way to get

first-hand information. Are the front staff courteous, knowledgeable and professional? Do they answer any questions in a friendly, helpful and informative way? Are the surroundings clean and pleasant? Do they stock high quality products and diets? Since you want to be sure the team you are working with is a good one, having direct experience with the business can really help. Doing a little background research on your own is a smart idea. Is the vet practice accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)? Checking their business website as well as online reviews like Google Reviews can be a good idea, too. Keep in mind though, that the higher the number of reviews, the more accurate the review summary will be. A high or low review summary from only a few reviewers may not give you a reliable assessment. In your planning with the veterinary clinic, you will want to speak to the owner or manager personally about some important points. By looking at these questions early on, the stage for your success is set! This is a much better way than putting out fires after they flare up. For example: Are they willing to provide the equipment you need, or do you have to bring your own? Is the practice willing to make any structural changes to make it easier for you? Is a bather available? Who will pay for the products used during the grooming? Are you responsible for a portion of the utility bill, or will the clinic cover it? Will you be paid based on production, and if so, what percentage of gross? Will you be an employee or an independent contractor? Will the clinic pay to advertise the grooming business, or

will the groomer have to pay? It’s good to know that grooming day–to–day in a veterinary practice has a few differences compared to working in a salon. One of the biggest differences is that a groomer will be working alongside the veterinary team, and you will need to decide who is in charge of all the business tasks related to the grooming service. If everyone has a clear idea of the best ways to make that happen, the veterinary staff can be a fantastic support team. Organization can really keep toxicity out of the workplace! You will need to clarify how to handle incoming grooming calls. Will you provide the receptionists with a scheduling guide, or will you schedule your own appointments? How are the grooming intakes and discharges handled? How will the clients be quoted for grooming services? Are you willing to groom cats? Will the clinic staff make reminder calls for your regular clients to help future grooming business? How about reminder cards? Who is in charge of social media? How will your grooming supply orders be taken care of? Who will sharpen your blades? If you and the veterinary team can answer all of these before your launch, you will avoid many of the most common pitfalls and sail onto a sea of success! In conclusion, working in a veterinary practice can be fantastic new grooming opportunity. By looking at all the different aspects of a great working relationship before diving in, you can set the stage for a terrific partnership! ✂

The
IMPORTANCE OF
INSURANCE E by Mary Oquendo e
I
nsurance payments can represent a significant amount of our monthly business expenses. While the goal of any business owner is to keep
expenses in check, this is one category that you want to be careful with when trying to save money. I have to groom five dogs monthly to cover my insurance payment so I want
to make sure my coverage is adequate. Less expensive policies may not have the coverage you think they do. After a claim is denied is not the time to find out you are not covered. HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT OUR COVERAGE IS? We all get that large envelope with pages and pages and pages written in insurance–ese when we renew or sign up for coverage. My eyes tend to glaze over after about page five. However, the experts recommend that we take the time to read it. Another option is to talk to your Insurance Specialist. An Insurance Specialist is not your agent. An insurance specialist is your contact person within the insurance company itself, such as Travelers, Hartford, Nationwide, and so forth.
28
Groomer to Groomer • Vol 35 Ed 12 • December 2016
GroomertoGroomer.com
An insurance specialist can walk you through your policy as it exists in their files. Bottom line is this; you are only covered as it appears on the insurance company’s end. It doesn't matter what your agent says. If you are mobile and have different policies for vehicle and business, you need to speak with each insurance specialist. SUGGESTED QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR INSURANCE SPECIALIST INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 1) What are the details of the animal floater? Under what circumstances is this floater enacted? Many non–industry policies only include death, not injury. There
will also be a dollar amount limit on each occurrence. 2) Does it cover lost pets? 3) What are the details of your business interruption policy? What are the exclusions? If you are mobile, does it cover when your vehicle is in the shop for a motor vehicle accident? 4) What are your deductibles? 5) Do you have full glass coverage? This includes mobile and / or shop. 6) Is there a limit on your equipment? Does it cover theft, fire, and the ravages of Mother Nature? 7) Shop renters: According to your lease, who is responsible for what on the premises and does your insurance cover your responsibility? You will want a copy of your lease handy when talking to the specialist.
8) For mobile groomers: Are you covered while at someone else’s home? There are some policies where your business policy is only in effect while parked at your residence, not the client's! This is a particular concern if you have separate companies for business and auto. In addition, who owns your grooming vehicle, you or the business? A business policy is for business vehicles unless you are leasing your personal vehicle to your business. There may be a form that has to be filled out. 9) How does your driving record and that of your employees’ factor into the cost? 10) If you offer classes, does your insurance company offer a rider for a teaching certificate? 11) Has your business structure

changed? A change could be going from an LLC to an S corp. Your insurance company will deny any claim if the business structure is listed incorrectly on the policy. 12) For mobile groomers: Does your policy cover the full cost of replacement including the conversion? “We recommend that groomers and grooming salon owners sit down with their insurance agents and discuss the above policies and how they will best protect your business. Also, make a point to do a review of your policies yearly, as your situation and the business’s situation may have changed. You don’t want to be under-insured, leaving you without enough coverage to take care of a claim, or just as bad, over insured, wasting your hard earned money.” —Ileana Nogueras, Founder of Groomers Emergency Assistance Fund. SOLVENCY [sol-vuh n-see]
RATIO [rey-shoh, -shee-oh]
A solvency ratio is a measure of the risk an insurer faces of claims that it cannot absorb. It measures a company’s ability to pay its bills.
When comparing prices, it’s important to compare like to like. One policy may be cheaper, but may also have reduced coverage. Insurance rates will also vary for the same policy state to state. Another consideration when choosing an insurance company is to determine their solvency ratio. A solvency ratio is a measure of the risk an insurer faces of claims that it cannot absorb. It measures a company’s ability to pay its bills. “It never occurred to me that an insurance company could go bankrupt. I am now paying the price because a claim was not paid because the insurance company of the person who hit my car is now out of business.” —Helen Schaefer To determine the health of your

Three columns come up for premiums earned, assets, and liabilities. A more detailed report is available if you click on get financial profile. Insurance policies to consider: • Business Owner Insurance covers business property, business interruption, theft, & liability claims. • Commercial Auto Insurance covers business vehicles for damage, theft, and liability. • Disability Insurance covers lost wages in the event you are unable to work due to any injury. • Health Insurance to help with
medical, dental, and surgical procedure costs. • Inland Marine Insurance covers your business when you are working off-site. Off-site may include grooming at an event or shelter, or theft of tools while working at a trade show. • Life Insurance pays out upon your demise. • Professional Liability Insurance protects against errors while performing your service. • Property Insurance covers damage to property caused by risks. It can be specialized insurance such as fire, flood, earthquake, and boiler. • Umbrella Insurance is for major claims affecting your business, home, and auto. It provides for much larger liability coverage than normal. • Workers Comp Insurance is mandatory if you have employees. It covers medical costs and lost wages in the event your employee is injured on the job. Any of these policies can be separate or bundled together under one policy.

GROOMING 101:
Lagotto Romagnolo E Photos and Article by Joy Nachmias e
This little truffle dog takes a different approach to grooming. Let me introduce and review a few guidelines to help you groom and understand the truffle dog groom.
L
ag Roms are a double coated non–shedding breed. They have a heavy wool coat and should not be blown out. They should not carry a lot of coat as pets or show dogs. They should not carry more than an inch and a half of hair. Pet owners and breeders will tell you Lagotto Romagnolo are groomed to look rustic, whether pet grooming or show grooming, the difference is length of coat and how much corrective work you will put into accentuating size, balance, proportion

and angles. The good news for you? You do not fluff dry this truffle dog and do not do a tight scissor finish—this is what “rustic” means.
The Bath DO use a good water soluble silicon oil spray for detangling in the tub. This step will help you work through matts and add elasticity, as well as help you get curl definition for the final finishing steps. You can get through matts on a dry coat. I find tub

DO use a good cleaning shampoo and do a brush or comb-out while the dog is wet and in the tub, this will help with elasticity. DO NOT use an oil stripping shampoo. Do your bath and brush– out in the tub and use your shampoo to lubricate and slide that dead hair out. Rinse, rinse, rinse. DO towel dry the dog and put

From the front view the ears will look triangle and fall and blend effortlessly into the total look of the head. The stop and around the eyes is not shaved. The finish outline can be done roughly with scissors then chunked up with thinning shears or chunkers.
The Rear The final outline includes the rear angulation and the throat latch to clearly set a balanced look. I set the rear outline and the front outline in this step. The 5, 4, 3/4 or 5/8 blade allows you to fix and define a rear assembly as well as set a front assembly to show a well laid back shoulder angle. I always use a 5, 4, 3/4 or 5/8 blade, depending on body length to accentuate these important angles on the pets and show dogs alike.
The Finish This includes a light mist of shine spray, towel off, and fingers run through the hair and tuff. Scissor to finish the final outline. Lay a damp towel over the dog’s body and spray or drizzle with water to set in curls, then use a damp towel to scrunch the head
