ALL THINGS PAW
by Michelle Knowles
Here we are in the throes of the holiday season! Clients, co-workers and employees are all under the influence of the rush to make things perfect for pet owners and their own families.
I
t is easy to become frustrated with the huge demands that are made of us at this time of year. Here are some tips on how to combat overwhelming schedules which can lead to hot tempers, client miscommunication and perhaps mistakes and injuries. • When faced with an overly full schedule, many of us feel stress at what the next day could bring. The thought of the long days and weeks ahead, the aching joints, the possible complaints and difficult grooms seem to loom over us and set our mind to the task in a negative way. Instead of thinking negatively about

the workload, think of it in terms of abundance. We are so lucky to have a full schedule, happy clients, silly pets to work on and a great paycheck at the end of the week to help make our personal dreams come true. Starting out the day with this positivity can greatly impact the rest of your day. • Prepare yourself for the next day. At the end of a long and hairy day, the last thing on our minds is doing anything but cleaning up and going home. Staging your bathing and finish area for the next morning is like giving yourself a gift when you walk into the shop in the morning. The mats on the floor are placed, the

towels are clean and easy to reach and all of your tools and equipment are ready to go. Literally, it’s like brownies came in the night to prep your morning. • Take care of yourself. Get plenty of rest, even if that means showering immediately when you get home and throwing yourself into bed. Our bodies heal while at rest so this can make a huge impact on your ability to focus and feel refreshed. • Plan your wardrobe for the week by hanging each day’s outfit on a hanger so that it is just a matter of grab and go each morning. • For those of you who have not yet

discovered the joys and convenience of food prepping for the week, you don’t know what you are missing. There are many how-to food prep videos online and I have been saved many times by the “salad in a mason jar” prep idea. Food prepping will assure that you have something easy at hand on your busy day that is healthy and nourishing while saving time by not having to go out for lunch. Food prep helps you maintain a healthy eating plan without grabbing a fast food item on an already hectic day. • Drink water. This is so important that I will repeat it. DRINK WATER. There are handy apps that you can put on your phone that will signal an alarm to remind you to drink some water. Dehydration can cause headaches, irritability, eye strain and swelling of the hands and feet that will further heap stress on an overloaded system which can pos-
sibly lead to the injury of you or the pet you are working on. • Practice a daily meditation. I am not talking about taking time out of your morning to do a whole hour of hot yoga, I simply mean, before the first client shows up, say a positive prayer. Think a positive thought and take some deep breaths so that you are centered and in the right frame of mind to deal with the coming day. If you are organized enough and you can add yoga, Tai Chi or other light stretching exercises in the morning, then that is even more of a bonus. The holidays can put a lot of stress on us, our colleagues and the people and pets we see. It is completely in our power as to what attitude we start our days with. When negative thoughts start to intrude, I take a deep breath and remember, I don’t want to be the Grinch, I want to be Cindy Lou Who! ✂

fter two years of hard work and months of anticipation by United States pet stylists, the 2017 World Grooming Championships kicked off. Every two years this extraordinary international event occurs in our industry. This year it was held in Belgium, at Groomania. A team of talented groomers earns the right to represent the Unties States every two years. It is comprised of the top four groomers and one alternate. Open level, also known as Division A competitive groomers, earn points at GroomTeam USA Sanctioned shows they place in across the United States. Those points accumulate over the year. The cycle repeats for a second year, and the best scores (not cumulative points) determine the team. (Disclaimer: the

rules have changed for the next cycle of the team, but is a similar concept). The alternate teammate, the one who will step up if another cannot make it, is decided by specific criteria laid out in GroomTeam Rules. It is a difficult, emotional journey to rank high enough to make the team. It is early mornings, longer days, and a lot of missed meals. It’s work that never ends. At home it is constant practice and sacrifice, lessons, critiques, applying new methods and perfecting technique. The year leading up to Worlds is much the same but at a higher pitch. The chosen four go into the ring with bigger hair, more flair and tighter timing, all in preparation for one weekend in a foreign land. This year, with emo-

tions and anticipation already running high, more drama was not what was needed, but mother nature had a different idea. The week before the team was to depart to Belgium, Hurricane Maria landed a massive strike to the home of Team Member Victor Rosado (hand stripping), Puerto Rico. This powerful hurricane destroyed the small island territory’s cell towers, electric grid, and internet. It covered roadways with debris and caused all airports to shut down. Maria left Puerto Rico’s 3.4 million US citizens stranded with no water, no electricity, and very limited food and fuel. With communications down, the fate of Victor was unknown. He hails from Ponce, a coastal city in the

It is difficult to imagine the emotions Victor faced being in the direct heart of the storm, unable to get a message out, uncertain if the dream he worked so hard for, finally within reach of his fingertips, was about to be ripped from his grasp by forces out of his control. Here on the mainland, unable to communicate or even know if he was okay, Victor’s many worldwide friends shared the same pitched angst. Countless tags and posts were made looking for any information. Groomers reached out from all over, some contacting
friends with ham radios hoping to get a message through, to hear any news. But the worry of the multitude was nothing compared to his teammates. Finally, on Sunday, two days before he was to depart for Belgium, Victor was able to get a message through to the team. He typed through tears he was at a location close to the airport, and would try to get his USDA approval stamp for his contest dog on Monday to make the flight out on Tuesday. As the Team members started to depart their hometowns and make

the long transatlantic flights toward Belgium with their dogs, anxiety gave way to anticipation. As everyone began to gather Thursday, no sight was more welcomed than Victor’s familiar profile crossing the street to the Park Hotel. Cheryl Purcell (Team Coordinator), the team, and the rest of the support squad squished into a rental van and made their way to the show sight, XPO Kortrijk. The group familiarized themselves with the layout which consisted of one very large expo room where both the tradeshow and competition take place. A stage with an

The large booths shared similar lighting set ups to the stage, and huge beaded chandeliers hung from the center of the room. On the far–right side, rows and rows of stadium seating rose into the rafters. Quick order was made of the logistics of the show. Cheryl confirmed when and where to pick–up their credentials. plies from all GroomTeam’s generous sponsors including the Travel Team’s Presenting Sponsor; The American Kennel Club. Finally, they picked up the travel team uniforms, created, and supplied by Artero. It was then back to the van, and an impromptu uniform try–on in the parking lot. The weekend consists of two days of individual competitions, followed by one day of Team Competition. First up on Friday was the hand stripping class. Travel Team Member, Victor Rosado and supporter/Top Ten GroomTeam member, Jared Lane represented the USA. Neither made the finals, an emotional blow. Jared produced one of the most beautiful grooms of his career on a Lakeland. It was clearly a crowd favorite as compliments poured in from spectators and other competitors alike. Victor did a beautiful job, and got much needed feedback on what judges were looking for on a Scottie, in anticipation of Sunday’s Big Event. Friday afternoon, GroomTeam USA members, Lindsey Dicken, Mackensie Murphy, Victor Rosado, and Michelle Breen participated in pure bred scissor class. Both Lindsey and Michelle made the final cut and Victor was nominated for Best Makeover. Their accomplishments helped raise spirits after a disappointing morning. Saturday was much of the same as Friday. The team met downstairs in the wee hours of the morning, fueled up for the day’s activities and headed over. Victor began the day grooming a gorgeous American Cocker, making the finalist’s cut. Saturday afternoon, GroomTeam USA was represented strongly in poodles. Lindsey, Michelle and Mackensie all entered small poodles, while Cat Opson, the team’s alternate,

With stiff competition (72 total entered poodles) Michelle won an award of merit for her Scandinavian trim on Ninja, her mini, and Cat made the finalists with her beloved standard, Zealand in a continental. Groomania does not announce placements initially, just finalists. At the end of the show, all finalists are brought into the ring and separated by event as well as class. The two classes represented in the finals are Open (which is actually similar to USA’s intermediate) and Championship Class (which is where all of the team members competed). It’s amazing to see every single
one of the finalists in the ring together. From student to world over champions, the best of the best are all in that ring. It’s a powerful visual and a great testament to how far hard work can take even an individual groomer (some countries did not send teams, only individual groomers). After presentations, and thanks to staff, speakers, and judges, we finally learned placements. Lindsey won first with her Bichon, Quin in individuals, Michelle won third with her borrowed Kerry Blue Terrier, Victor placed third with his borrowed American Cocker and Cat Opson placed Second in Large poodles with Zealand. Overall Best in Show went to the English Groomer,
Amy Masden with her stunning black American Cocker. With placements finally settled and Groomania coming to a close, it was time to switch gears and prepare for the big contest. The atmosphere of Sunday morning is almost indescribable. Teams and their supporters arrived on show site in the still darkness of the morning. The team donned their new uniforms; the “Support Squad” proudly wore their team jerseys generously provided by Cat for everyone’s plus– ones and fans. Before the contest begins, the teams are presented on stage much like the Olympics. The teams march in through the ring, and up onto the

stage, not by national anthem, but rather a famous popular song from one of their fellow countryman. The teams are presented in alphabetical order and then file into the bleachers as the next ones start their procession. Last in alphabetical order is the United States. The team walked out to Born in the USA, and carried the largest flag. Up on stage it was proudly unfurled and framed the team. They joined the other 20 countries in the stands, the best of the best from the world, a completely surreal and unforgettable sight. It’s the moment a dream becomes a reality for over 80 groomers; the moment they must groom better than they ever have before. In years past, all four categories are held simultaneously. This time they split the teams into morning and afternoon. First up was scissor breeds and hand strip; Lindsey with her Bichon Elliot, and Victor with Yoshi the Scottie, respectively. Judges milled around the ring, stopping to observe progress and techniques, and to make mental notes, all while spectators were kept a considerable distance away by empty space and rope dividers to help avoid interference or distraction. Nothing is announced at the end of these classes. It is scissors down and the tables are cleaned. Helpers swoop in to lay table covers and move the specially made USA Paw Mats on top. The royal blue satin covers, scalloped with pure white braiding and boldly emblazoned with the GroomTeam logo on the front are the perfect contrast to any dog presented. All the while the morning competition was taking place, Team members Michelle and Mackensie tirelessly prepped their dogs for the afternoon. Mackensie brought the beautiful Parti-Colored American Cocker, Tubbs; Michelle brought her huge stunning Standard, Indy. To watch these ladies work is inspiring. Michelle is stoic and consistent, completely absorbed in her work,
Mackensie is diligent and quick, moving from area to area, sculpting the fluid lines and soft swoosh of the cocker profile, standing back analyzing, tweaking, and perfecting. methodical and precise. Mackensie is diligent and quick, moving from area to area, sculpting the fluid lines and soft swoosh of the cocker profile, standing back analyzing, tweaking, and perfecting. It is strange when used to the American system, and then to be in Europe and not know instantly. Judging takes a considerable amount of time. The placements and finalists are decided by a panel of three judges and their computed average. It is the same for both individual contests and for the team competition. In team competition, however, the points are tabulated for each category and then added to the team’s score. There is a lull between the afternoon scissors down and the revelation of the top teams. When the placements are announced, each team presents each dog on assigned tables together, again in alphabetical order. It is at that time the public is invited in to take pictures and see the dogs up close. It’s a moment of pure joy. The teams dance, sing, and their supporters wave flags and cheer. Everyone is smiling; what’s done is done and this is the moment to enjoy the journey that it took to get there.

Luisa Lehmann authoritative voice rings out. The top six teams are announced in alphabetical order, and teams who were not called vacate the ring. The top six teams move to the front tables, moving covers, mats and dogs, and with silent anxiety await to hear where they placed. The placements are announced in reverse order starting with 6th place. They are announced in short order, although being there it feels like an eternity. France is called to stage as the 6th place finalist, followed by Belgium in 5th, and England as 4th. Heartbeats start to come a little faster and harder when Russia is announced as 3rd place. The last remaining two countries are Italy and the USA. Two years prior in Milan, the USA lost to Italy by a narrow margin. Not missing the chance for flair and drama, Kitty Dekeersgieter, Groomania’s show owner, took to the stage with judges Umberto Lehmann and Denys Lorrain. They referenced the previous results of the 2015 Championships, saying it was much of the same. Italy’s massive cheering section chanting “I—tal—ia” the entire time, clapping hands and waving flags. As Luisa went on to announce

second place, she begged for the firstplace team’s fans to be silent, to give the runners up a chance to enjoy their moment. Looking at USA Team’s faces, the disappointment was evident; it seemed it would be very much of the same as last time. The air buzzed as everyone collectively held their breath to hear, “2nd place… Italy.” The disbelief and quiet disappointment the USA team had been holding in turned to elation. There was big fat, cry tears as everyone hugged, and others came and congratulated the team. All the anxiety and drama getting to this moment was let go and turned into complete jubilation. From that moment, through the many pictures and praise, the only thing heard was the chant, “USA! USA! USA!” ✂ Special Thanks to All Our GroomTeam USA Sponsors. WHEN IS A GROOM

Her affliction centers on her teeth. Pica is the only client of mine who has ever destroyed a muzzle. To successfully groom pets such as these, it begins with clarity between groomer and owner. Start with opening up the appropriate dialogue.

needs have changed or are changing, and the comfort of their pet is my primary concern. For some, it means grooming more frequently. Pets with thicker coats that are not well maintained by the owners or require clipper work will need grooming more often to reduce the overall time it takes to groom them. For others, it means less frequent grooming. Shortcoated pets can increase the time between grooming without impacting the amount of time needed to finish them. As perfection is no longer an option, I may recommend a comfort trim. This is a nice way of saying that they now need an extended sanitary

I may suggest grooming on the “installment plan” if I cannot safely complete grooming in one session. The installment plan breaks up the grooming into two or more visits. be aware of the behavior of their pets, which is why I never lie or sugar coat any pet’s behavior. I have had way too many clients call me because they think their former groomer must have done something to their pet because “all of a sudden” their pet is now badly behaved for grooming. Most likely, it wasn’t all of a sudden, but rather the groomer not being honest in their assessment of the pet’s behavior with the owner as the pet’s behavior changed gradually over time. For established clients, the assessment is just as thorough, but minus the owner. I am always looking for reasons this pet should not be groomed today. Is he in pain? A pet in pain

Coughing may be indicative of heart failure. Are the gums sticky? One of the early signs of dehydration are tacky gums. Are the gums paler than normal? If I see paler gums, my recommendation is to go directly to the veterinarian’s office, as blood is not pumping properly, particularly important to senior pets as they have a harder time regulating their body temperatures. Senior pets can overheat or chill quickly. I watch for signs of aggression or tensing while checking them over. I really want the owner to be aware that their

'17 A NEWBIE’S VIEW E by Kathy Hosler e
“G
room Expo is incredible... It’s so much more than I expected,” exclaims first time attendee, Diane Madden. “I used to be a hairdresser and have gone to many, many hair conventions, but none of them compare with what I have seen at Groom Expo.”
HERE IS DIANE’S EXPERIENCE.... I knew that Groom Expo was the largest grooming show in the world, and when I got the opportunity to attend, I wanted to see what it was all about. I was a little bit apprehensive. I heard they were expecting over 5,000 attendees and the only person I knew who would be attending was my sister– in–law. I soon found out that my fears were unfounded. As I entered the registration area, I was warmly welcomed by Mr. Frank Brown, who is known as the resident
host and friendliest face at the Expo. What a delightful surprise. I have never been personally welcomed to any show before. Then, when I picked up my name tag at registration, I got a map of the convention center and schedule of events listing the times and locations of all the seminars, contests, etc. Later, a group of us first–time attendees went on the Newbie Tour that was guided by Debbie Beckwith. The convention center was huge, but Debbie took us through the trade show, navigated the contest area, showed us how to get to the educational seminar classrooms, and so much more. It was really great. I met new friends during the tour that I saw all weekend long and I have stayed in contact with. I was told that Groom Expo has always been described as the ‘learning’ show and now I see why. I went

to several seminars and the speakers were fabulous! They all shared so much information and they presented it in an easy to understand format. I attended Joey Villani’s (aka, the Dogfather) day–long seminar, Paving the Way to Success. He began his presentation by saying, “Most groomers are really great at grooming, but they don’t know much about running a business.” Then he jumped right into it with, “If people don’t know about you or where you are, they can’t become your customers.” Joey gave us many tried and true ways to attract customers by using different forms of advertising. He explained how to brand ourselves, how to become a leader, how to build a great staff, manage money, and so much more. It was incredible how much I learned in that seminar. It made me realize that there is a lot more to groom-

ing than just the grooming itself. It was like that with every seminar I attended. I went to classes about creating a spa experience, low stress grooming, tricks of the trade, snap–on combs for everyday grooming, and creative grooming. Oh, how I wished I could have cloned myself and attended everything! There were a lot of grooming contests throughout the weekend. Groomer TV was broadcasting the competitions on a huge screen at the back of the stage area where they showed close–ups of each contestant as they executed their groom. It was amazing to watch them work on their dogs as they took them from overgrown to show–ring ready. I got to see what products and tools they were using. It was like getting private lessons from some of the most talented stylists in the world. I was blown away by the immenseness of the Trade Show. There was booth after booth of everything a groomer could ever want, and it seemed like all of them were having show specials. Several of the booths were doing grooming demonstrations. It was great to be able watch the presenters and ask them questions about their grooming techniques and the tools they were using. The booth people were really friendly and knowledgeable. They answered all of my questions and showed me special features of their products. As I was looking at equipment or other products, groomers would stop and begin talking to me: saying things like, “I’ve had a Clipper Vac for many years and I wouldn’t groom without it.” Or, “I use this shampoo all the time and I love it.” And, “I always get my new scissors when I’m at the show. I go to all the booths and I can try them on to make sure they fit my hand comfortably and feel balanced. You can’t do

vied for gorgeous trophies and big prize money. Many of the stylists were dressed in outfits that complimented the designs that they put on their dog or cat. I loved it! Then it was on to the Barkleigh Honors Awards. It was a time to honor special people and recognize the contributions that they have made to the grooming industry. There were categories for everything from Up & Coming Groomer of the Year, New Product of the Year, Speaker of the Year, and many more. This ceremony and the entire weekend showed me how much these groomers cared for each other and for their industry and its future. Their heartfelt caring was evident at the Internet Social, the Silent Auction, the Groomers Emergency Assistance Fund (GEAF) booth, and the Trade Show. The groomers and vendors all rolled up their sleeves to donate equipment, products, and money to help other groomers in need—especially those affected by the recent hurricanes. I saw it again as I watched the Rescue Round–up when stylists groomed homeless pets in an effort to help them find forever homes. It was heartwarming to see the transformations of those pups and the gentle way the stylists handled those that were scared and not used to being groomed. After the Rescue Roundup came a competition that I had been especially eager to see, the Creative Grooming Competition. I had never seen one in person, but I saw lots of the finished creations on Facebook. I couldn’t wait to see what these artists had in store for us. It was amazing. The stage was filled with vividly colored dogs of all sizes. Each artist was showcased on the big screen as they carved and colored their entry. Watching that competition was a real education in itself. I can’t even

imagine how much time and talent went into each entry. In my book, every one of them was a winner! At the end of the show–close auction, I got a chance to talk briefly with Teri DiMarino, the winner of the AKC Leadership Award. She asked me how I liked the show. I said I loved every minute of it and that I learned so much. I then told Teri that the thing that impressed me most about the Expo was the people. Everyone was so friendly, so willing to help, and eager to share their knowledge. I never experienced that at any of the hairdresser shows I attended. I assured Teri that, although this was the first time I had been to Groom Expo—she could count on seeing me back here every year. Best weekend ever! ✂

PART 2: MONEY How do you create a viable self-sustaining business that will endure and thrive? Chances are, if you own a Pet Service Business, your livelihood depends on you showing up to work and customers showing up to pay for your services. This segment focuses on learning to implement basic money management strategies to help you thrive today, tomorrow, and long into the future!
HERE ARE YOUR GROOMING BUSINESS BASICS TIPS FOR MANAGING MONEY IN A PET SERVICE ENVIRONMENT: Know your market. You can define your own metrics and learn the consumer habits of the economic markets in your area. Your market and how you brand, manage, and run your business may change based upon being rural, suburban, or urban based. The “flavor” of the market surrounding your business can offer key insights into helping you establish policies and prices. Know your customers. Getting to know the customers you are attracting to your business is important. Learning where they live, where their kids go to school, and

even what hobbies they participate in will give you key clues to determining their spending habits or flexible income. Remember, although necessary for the health and well–being of their pet, Pet Services are often seen as a luxury service and learning about your customers will help you identify how luxurious you can afford to be! Know your business. Identifying the skills and even environment that surround you in your specific business will be helpful in determining how to monetize your opportunities when seeking to maximize your business revenues. Perhaps you

have enough square footage to offer services by 5 providers, you may identify that as an opportunity to increase your client base and revenue. In the reverse, you may be limited in space and can only accommodate a small amount of clients—you would look to increase the revenue opportunity with each client by adding services to complement your base. Know your numbers. Many Pet Service providers choose their careers out of passion and simply collect their money as a by–product. Take control of your financial future and learn to balance your check book,
Your primary business is like planting a Money Tree which you will harvest when the time is appropriate. Profit Centers are the equivalent of planting related money trees in the same orchard so that you can harvest them when necessary. create a simple Profit and Loss Statement, manage your Balance Sheet, and get acquainted with a budget. Plan for today and for tomorrow. Budget. Don’t cringe, just do it. Like any skill, learning to Budget properly for unexpected (and planned) expenses will become easier with practice. Budgeting allows you to take control of your business finances and see roadblocks sooner. Budgeting can be as simple
as plotting your next day, week, or month expenses on a sheet of paper and reviewing it later for accuracy. Your business will need money to sustain and grow—a budget allows you to keep your eyes on your money. Create profit centers. Think of this as the “Orchard Effect”. Your primary business is like planting a Money Tree which you will harvest when the time is appropriate. Profit Centers are the equivalent of
planting related money trees in the same orchard so that you can harvest them when necessary. Just like an orchard, having multiple trees allows you the luxury of harvesting from different trees at different times. Your trees should be related. For example, it may not resonate with your customer if you offer Pet Grooming, Boarding, and sell ladies’ clothing. The Money Trees you plant should all complement and relate to one another in your Business Orchard.

INCOME VS. EXPENSE The money you take in is your Income; the money you spend is your Expenses. Learning to balance the ratio between Income vs. Expense will allow you to widen the gap and increase your profit.
Use loss leaders. A loss leader can be an effective method to drive activity to your business. A business may choose to employ a loss leader to bring customers in the door, and then focus on teaching them about their services. Think: Activity breeds activity. Your goal as a business professional is to put yourself in front of as many potential clients as you possibly can—used effectively, a loss leader can bring those clients to your door. Income vs. Expenses. This is the single most important money relationship you will have as a business person. The money you take in is your Income; the money you spend is your Expenses. Learning to balance the ratio between Income vs.
Expense will allow you to widen the gap and increase your profit. Many Pet Professionals believe that if they simply increase their prices, it will equate into making more money— learning to balance this ratio is paramount to watching your profits grow. Money diets. Just like regular check–ups are recommended to make sure you thrive and enjoy continued physical health, your financial health will benefit from check–ups as well. After you review your business spending habits, put yourself on a money diet. Just like counting calories, you can begin by counting pennies. Finding areas that you can save money and make wiser spending decisions is the equivalent of giving yourself a raise.

Certainly consumer habits can drive markets—anyone who has experienced a “back to school slump” or “holiday rush” can attest to that. Creating sustainability runs deeper than market swings. Remember our Money Orchard above? Learn to plant trees to pick when your main money tree is not ready; create a menu of services that may allow your customer to return to you more often; get creative with service offerings and rewards programs that drive activity and clients into your salon more frequently. There is no single way to create sustainability—make it as unique as your own business.

Start by holding the skin tight like you would when hand stripping, keep the blade flat on the coat—not at an angle. This is important since you are working with a razor blade and you don’t want to cut the dog’s skin. Using small strokes you will be able to cut the hair away following the lines of your pattern.
