Makes Perfect: WHY YOU SHOULD IDENTIFY AS A

I had a client tell me once, “Just give me the hairstyle I want, it’s not like you are doing brain surgery.” This didn’t change the fact that her dog was shaved down that day with an offer to bag the pelt for her.

I

f you are a groomer reading this, you likely just rolled your eyes, nodded in agreement or high– fived the person sitting next to you because you had the same experience this week. I wasn’t rude or unprofessional when I interacted with my customer. Biting back a quick reply, I patiently explained how matting occurs, discussed an acceptable maintenance schedule for her dog’s coat needs, secured a matted release form, and her dog left that day with what

6

I like to call a “Matted Makeover”, which is code for removing a pelt with a #10 blade from nose to tail. Her pet left the salon with a fresh start, clean skin and was comfortable for a while afterwards. My work was complete. I had helped an animal in need, and while not completely satisfied, my customer received what she needed from me and I was confident she would return. Afterwards, her barbed words stuck with me; I know, as pet stylists,

we don’t perform brain surgery. Her insult was meant to demean not only my personal skill set, but my entire profession in one swoop. I wanted her to know the depth of knowledge and experience that working pet groomers offer their clients. I wanted her to know that she was purchasing not only my knowledge of how to safely groom her pet, but also my deep compassion and patience. Her statement diminished my services in one sentence. How did we get to this point?

A working pet groomer needs to possess an extensive range of skills: Basic clipper and scissor safety, a general knowledge of animal health and first aid, high levels of animal behavior knowledge as well as safe handling and restraint techniques, a nearly endless memorization of breed patterns and nuances, tool and equipment maintenance, time management and customer service abilities, just to name a few. Most groomers leap Leonbergers on a regular basis and make it look easy. What groomer hasn’t stared fearlessly into the jaws of a snapping Shih Tzu and lived to tell the tale, as well as created a cute, round face in the process? As working pet groomers, we understand the scope of our knowledge and the depth of offerings we provide to pet owners. Yet, time and time again

What if we were brain surgeons? Would you prefer to see a doctor who “practiced” medicine or one who boasted he was finished training a decade ago and knew everything he could ever know? when we gather in groups or on social media, we recount situations where our clients diminish our services (or us, personally, for performing them). When interviewing new employees, we have adjusted our initial conversations to include phrases such as, “we don’t play with puppies”, “it’s a physically demanding (dirty, exhausting, draining, insert your word here) job”. We have found it necessary to include these disclaimers because there is a misconception about what happens realistically in our salons every day. How do we

change these misconceptions? In answer to these questions that working pet groomers face, let’s change the dialog about what we do and how we do it. What if we were brain surgeons? Would you prefer to see a doctor who “practiced” medicine or one who boasted he was finished training a decade ago and knew everything he could ever know? I meet many pet groomers, and often conversations are framed around their expertise, experience and skill level. I hear introductions such as: I am a Certified Terrier Groomer; I

have been grooming for 52 years; I graduated from Grooming School 10 years ago. All of these are wonderful accomplishments and I applaud each of them. But what if we simply became “Practicing Groomers”? What if the introduction was: I have been a practicing groomer for 32 years; I am a practicing groomer who specializes in terriers; I am a practicing groomer with an emphasis on elderly or special needs pets? Just like medical professionals, this leaves room for innovation, experience levels, specialties and indicates a

By identifying as a “practicing” professional, you can indicate to your clients that our education is never finished. Who among us doesn’t eagerly await the arrival of yet more rare breeds to become mainstream so we can quench our thirst for exciting new breed studies? Becoming a “practicing” groomer also lets your client know that you are responsible for staying abreast of new practices

and innovations within the industry on their behalf. A “practicing” groomer has the perfect platform to introduce new products, techniques, and even styles to their clients. By definition, you are letting your clients know that you will continue to improve and learn for their pets’ benefit. Practice makes perfect. As a final note, when you choose to call yourself a “practicing” groomer, you don’t diminish your experience or skill level, instead you can rest assured

that you will instill confidence in your clients because you have been practicing for X amount of time. So, instead of identifying as a professional groomer, I propose that you contemplate changing your mindset. As a trusted care provider working in a highly skilled trade, we are already supposed to be professional. What if you were a “practicing” groomer instead? My client may have been more wrong than she realized when she indicated that I wasn’t performing brain surgery when I did my job. It may not be medicine, but beginning that day, I adopted the same mindset as her doctor and became a “practicing” groomer. I am pleased to say that my clients now value the skills, experience and expertise that I bring to their pet every time. And if I find myself having to explain why their dog needs an unsavory haircut, the dialog is easier when I explain that I have been a practicing groomer for X number of years, or that as a practicing groomer, I have acquired education about coat and skin health that I am excited to share with her. The list goes on. Now, go forth and begin practicing your craft. ✂

CUSTOMER CHRISTMAS GIFTS:

C

Thought IT'S THE

THAT

Dear Michell, it has been suggested to me by a groomer friend that I do something nice for my customers at Christmas. I am on a tight budget and I am slightly uncomfortable with the idea. Do you have any suggestions?

H

i Tom. It is a nice idea to offer your customers a gift. Most likely, not all your customers celebrate Christmas. If you openly celebrate the holiday and you feel like sharing with your clients regardless of their beliefs— then go for it! If you choose to openly celebrate, you will probably develop and maintain a clientele who either shares your beliefs, are tolerant of your beliefs, or are indiffer-

12

ent. There could be a few folks that strongly disagree with your beliefs and they may look for grooming services elsewhere. Christmas has a whole commercial aspect that can be far removed from the religious beliefs of Christians, so it is likely that most customers will tolerate the festivities regardless of your beliefs or theirs. If you are slightly uncomfortable because you don’t want to

–TOM openly share your religious beliefs with your clients, then consider a mid–year customer appreciation gift instead. Even if you choose not to give a gift, consider that there is a reason why stores start putting up Christmas displays before Thanksgiving. The reason is revenue! Starting the holiday music and decorations on Black Friday might increase tips for you and your employees during this time.

Greeting cards are probably the most common holiday gift. There are several companies, including Barkleigh Productions, who sell holiday cards with a dog grooming theme. Consider choosing a holiday theme rather than a Christmas theme to cover a wider range of religious beliefs. Some companies will print the signatures and message inside and print the return address on the envelopes for you, including your logo. All you need to do is scan and email the image of the signatures and your message and they will print them in the card for you. You still need to address them as well as purchase and apply stamps. If you are talking about sending several hundred cards, these printing

services save you a lot of time. You may want to go the printed– message route for the majority of your clients but consider hand writing and signing your top 25 clients or so. A temporary labor agency or maybe your teenaged niece are good resources for addressing and applying stamps. I suggest budgeting for and ordering these cards in October each year. In the category of free or inexpensive, adding festive bows and/ or a bandanna can be nice and easy. It takes just minutes to cut enough bandannas for a week! There are several companies that do lovely and inexpensive bows and bow ties these days. Free spa services are always a hit and don’t cost the salon much at

all. Maybe as a customer appreciation or holiday gift to your clients, you offer a free aromatherapy spa treatment (shampoo). You are going to bathe the dog anyway, so it is of relatively no added expense to the salon. Most of these shampoos come with a matching perfume to enhance the fragrance. Some salon owners go all out and order up a Santa Clause and a photographer for a bonified shopping mall inspired photo shoot. Some have ornaments hand painted with each pet’s name or even portrait. Some offer discounts and coupons for free grooming. Some people miraculously find the time to bake dog

biscuits for their clients. The possibilities are endless. If you are an employer, you need to decide if you are going to give gifts to all of the salon’s customers or just your own personal clients. Will you allow your employees to give gifts to their clients? If so, what? Should you only give gifts to the top 25 clients, based on revenue? If you are an employee, is it ok with your employer that you give gifts? These are all policies that need to be addressed. Be sure to put some thought into not only this Christmas, but all to come. Once you start giving gifts, it can become expected. Enjoy your holiday! ✂

ALL THINGS PAW

by Michelle Knowles

WHAT THEY ARE & HOW TO HELP THEM HEAL

Hot spots, also known as pyotraumatic dermatitis, are surface skin infections caused when populations of normal skin bacteria grow and overwhelm normal resistance.

T

hey are generally circular patches that lose hair, can be swollen, may exude a smelly liquid and can be painfully itchy, causing the dog to scratch, lick or bite to the point of self–mutilation.

WHAT IS A “HOT SPOT”? A hot spot is a localized area of skin inflammation and infection. The infection can be superficial or deep. Other common names for this

22

condition include: moist dermatitis and acute moist dermatitis.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF A HOT SPOT? Redness, oozing, pain and itchiness are hallmark signs. Hair loss is common. Sometimes hair can mat over the spot and hide the size and severity of the problem. These spots can appear suddenly, and grow quickly, sometimes within hours.

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 36 Ed 12 • December 2018

GroomertoGroomer.com

It is common for an owner to notice a small area of inflamed skin in the morning and come home from work to be met with a large area the size of the palm of a hand. The dog is usually highly agitated and will not leave the area alone. Some dogs will even growl or snap if the area is touched.

WHAT CAUSES A HOT SPOT? There is usually a traumatic

incident to initiate the extreme licking and scratching behavior. Look for fleas, mites or other external parasites, an insect sting or bite, allergies (food, inhalant, or contact) or injury (skin wound, scrape, etc.). Some animals have been known to “start” a hot spot out of boredom or stress– related psychological problems.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO TREAT A HOT SPOT?

Some animals have been known to “start” a

out of boredom or stress–related psychological problems.

The first thing to do is speak with a veterinarian. Due to the rapid spread and possibility of deeper skin infection, it is wise to start treatment with a vet. Here are some steps to take at the salon. Caution is advised; hot spots are often very painful. Use a muzzle if need be, for your protection. 1. Clip the area free of hair. There is no need to shave backwards or scrape the skin. The first treatment for hot spots is to dry them out and get air to the area. 2. Cleanse the area with cool water and a gentle anti–bacterial skin cleanser. 3. Cool compress the area with a cool wet washcloth. 4. Medications may be needed depending on the severity and size of the hot spot. The veterinarian may prescribe oral antibiotics, topical drying sprays or medications, and/or special shampoos. 5. Prevention of licking, biting, scratching; i.e. Elizabethan collar (E Collar) or Boobooloon. 6. Additional home remedies that can be used until the vet can be seen: • Ozonated oil is recommended because it promotes quick healing, does not sting and is completely safe if licked by the pet. This oil is gel–like in consistency and is Anti–bacterial, anti–fungal and helps

PETS THAT SWIM Many of our pet friends enjoy swimming during the hot months but then have issues with tangling and hot spots. There are several options for after–water care that will decrease the likelihood of these is-

sues from occurring. These steps can be taken to care for the pet whether the fun has been in the ocean, lake, river, chlorine or salt water pool: 1. After the fun has been had and the day is done, rinse the pet thoroughly with clean water. 2. Apply a leave–in conditioner or a watered–down version of regular conditioner, gently comb or brush through the coat then rinse and let dry naturally. 3. Another option is to use a collagen spray with fulvic minerals to

add moisture to the hair itself. This can be brushed through a dry coat in between grooming and/or after water fun to maintain hydration and prevent tangling. 4. Brush the pet while still damp or when dry to realign the hair and help close the cuticle to prevent further tangles and buildup of loose hair. Hot spots are not complicated, and therapeutic treatments can be soothing and painless while helping the skin heal. ✂

ou might think that pet nutrition has little or no correlation to the grooming industry—but in reality, it does. We have all heard the phrase, “You are what you eat.” And that statement really rings true for our furry friends. You see pets everyday in your salon. len ears, or incessant licking and chewing of their paws or other places on their body. And the more they scratch and lick, the worse these problems get. The owners bring their problemridden pets to you and expect you to permanently fix their issues with a ‘medicated’ bath. We all know that no amount of medicated baths can undo months or even years of poor feeding practices. Another contributor to skin and coat issues are owners who indulge their pet with treat after treat. Many commercial treats are packed with calories, salt, lots of additives and very little nutrition. Yes, the pets may love them, but we have all seen the sad results in our salons. Grossly obese pets are brought in for grooming. Many times they have difficulty standing for the groom because their extremely overweight bodies have put such a strain on their

joints that they are in constant pain. And it certainly makes grooming them more difficult for you. A poor diet can lead to extreme dental problems. Many pets show signs of periodontal disease by the time they are three years old. Untreated, they wind up with a mouthful of tarter encrusted teeth and diseased gums that will impact their overall health in a big way and can progress into life–threatening conditions. We have all groomed pets that had such bad breath that you could smell it as soon as they entered your door. Giving a pet ‘people food’ is something that almost everyone has done at one time or another, but owners who go overboard and give their pets complete turkey dinners or baked ham buffets are inviting digestive disorders, more serious problems like pancreatitis, or worse.

Many stylists have made it a standard practice to remain closed for a day or two after holidays because they know that some owners will let their pets feast on everything in sight. Pets vomiting or having diarrhea due to gastric upset while they are being groomed is not something that you should have to contend with. Without realizing it, some owners have contributed to their pet’s early death by making unwise nutritional choices for them. Sad isn’t it? So, what’s a groomer to do? Most owners really do want to provide great nutrition for their pets, but they don’t have a clue how to go about it. That’s where you can help. Educate yourself about pet nutrition and then share that information with your customers. Owners value your professional opinion and pet care knowledge. Help-

ing the pet parent make better nutritional choices can go a long way toward improving the health, happiness, and comfort of their furry companions— and can strengthen the bond you have with the owner. If you sell pet food and treats, ask your clients what brand of food they are feeding and compare it to what you have. Show your customers how to read and understand the labels. Tell them what to look for and what to avoid when they are purchasing items for their pets. If you carry pet vitamins and other nutritional supplements, you can explain to the pet parent how these products might benefit their specific cat or dog. As their groomer, you have the advantage of knowing the pet and any issues that it has. In addition to recommending

GroomertoGroomer.com

high–quality, commercially produced food, treats and supplements, you can give them information about other options—like a raw diet. Suggest that they try healthy, natural snacks like carrots and green beans instead of high–fat, additive–packed treats. If you have a blog or business newsletter, you can reach out to your entire client base about the importance of feeding a high–quality diet, limiting treats and including daily exercise for their pets. Help them understand how making good nutritional choices can improve their pet’s hair, skin and overall health. Poor nutrition is not the cause of every problem that pets have—but good nutrition prevents and eliminates a lot of them. And without a doubt, a pet with a good coat and healthy skin is a lot easier to groom. ✂

hat is so special about Groom Expo that groomers close their businesses and travel great distances to attend? From day one, Groom Expo has focused on the needs and wants of the everyday groomer. Whether it’s the first time attendee hungry for knowledge, or the seasoned veterans who come to recharge their batteries, network with peers and keep abreast of everything that is happening in our industry—the seminars, competitions and Trade Show have something for everyone. If you have never been to Groom Expo, the thought of so many people might be a bit overwhelming. But you need not worry. Several times each day there is a “Newbie” tour. Attend-

ees are guided through the show to help them familiarize themselves with the layout and to meet other first– timers. Many lasting Expo friendships began with a Newbie tour. Interacting with fellow pet care professionals to further their careers and build a successful business is another reason people attend Groom Expo. “The coolest thing about our industry is that it can be whatever you want it to be,” says Melissa Verplank, owner of the Paragon School of Pet Grooming and Learn2GroomDogs. com. “If you just want to work a couple of days a week—or if you want to have a fleet of mobile grooming vans, you can. Ours is a profession that can go with you. You can travel the world and find grooming work almost anywhere.”

“We all know that accidents and pet medical issues can happen in any grooming establishment,” says Jill. “Learning how to quickly assess the situation, and knowing what to do in an emergency, could make a life or death difference for the pet in your care.” “You get out of it what you put into it,” Melissa continues. “Education is everything if you want to move your career ahead.” Educational programs and seminars at Groom Expo are geared toward groomers in every stage of their career. The all–day Brusher Bather Certificate Program presented by Teri

DiMarino drew a huge crowd, eager to learn about the tools, techniques and products that could take their careers to new heights. You don’t have to be a new groomer to benefit from the Barkeligh Pet First Aid & CPR Certification course that was presented by Jill Pipino. “We all know that accidents and pet medi-

cal issues can happen in any grooming establishment,” says Jill. “Learning how to quickly assess the situation, and knowing what to do in an emergency, could make a life or death difference for the pet in your care.” Customer service skills are of the utmost importance for every pet care professional. Customer Service Survival Skills, centered on how to avoid, diffuse or handle difficult situations. “If there is a conflict with a client, you can be the gasoline or the water,” Castro says. Amy outlined specific steps to take to resolve issues in a calm and positive manner, then she added, “You’ve got to manage your emotions. Customers can only push your buttons if you hand over the remote.” There were dozens of additional seminars covering creative coloring, mobile grooming, coat and skin issues, breed styling, business topics, and many more. “When it comes to education,” says Sam Kohl, owner of Aaronco Pet Products, “Every morsel you pick up is like money in the bank. Every technique and tip that you learn, you will use over and over.” One of the best places to get those tips and techniques is at the grooming competition ring. Some of the most gorgeous dogs on the planet were on the stage. All throughout the weekend, groomers of all skill levels put their talents to work. Whether it was first–timers eager to hone their skills, or seasoned competitors trying to earn a place on GroomTeam, they were giving it their all. Attendees could watch the competitors from start to finish. Groomer TV had a huge screen that broadcasted close–ups of each stylist as they worked, which allowed the spectators to see all the products and techniques they used to achieve their final groom. In addition to all the seminars and grooming competitions, there is always a wealth of education and knowledge to be found at the Trade Show. There were over 170 booths stocked with everything from the newest slicker brush to a complete

mobile salon on wheels. “There are things that you never get to see unless you go to a Trade Show,” shares groomer and speaker, Mary Oquendo. “I love to try new things that may make my life and work easier.” Mary’s thoughts were echoed by thousands of groomers who flooded the Trade Show floor with their ‘wish lists’ in hand, in search of new products, salon equipment and show specials. Grooming demos, comparing products and equipment, networking with your peers, talking with manufacturers, it’s endless…you could easily spend the entire Expo in the Trade Show. But, if you spent all your time there, you might miss out on the fun and food. Groomers work hard, and at the opening night Groom of Thrones Ball, it was clearly evident that they can socialize and play with unmatched enthusiasm. An enormous fire–breathing dragon welcomed kings and queens, and knights and damsels as they took to the dance floor and made the walls reverberate with laughter and music. Dining at the Expo was a treat in itself. Where else but in Hershey are you served fabulous meals and all things chocolate (including chocolate butter)? At the end of each luncheon, Mr. B and his staff provided hilarious entertainment, and groomer contestants who participated in the festivities were rewarded with prizes. Saturday evening was packed with events from start to finish. It began with an amazing banquet that was expertly prepared by the award–winning Hershey Lodge chefs. Immediately after the meal was the GroomOlympics Best In Show Awards. Throughout the weekend, GroomOlympics tournaments were held and the winner of each tournament was recognized on the ballroom

stage. They then competed against each other for the title of the Wahl World Champion. The 2018 Best In Show winner was Michelle Breen with her spectacular Standard Poodle. Then it was on to the E–Z Groom Abstract Creative Runway Competition. Twelve stylists presented their beautifully sculpted entries on the ballroom runway, and first place went to a gorgeous Standard Poodle that was sculpted and entered by Adriane Pope. Next was the focal point of the evening, the Barkleigh Honors Awards. “The goal of the Barkleigh Honors Awards is to recognize the groomers and those involved in the grooming world who go above and beyond in their contributions to our industry,” says Todd Shelly, president of Barkleigh Productions. Many of the nominees and winners of these prestigious awards began as ordinary groomers who have gone on to make industry–changing accomplishments. Milena Kon, who received the Barkleigh Honors award for Creative Groomer of the Year, is one of them. Just a few short years ago, she began her career as a groomer. She saw a creative competition and immediately knew that she wanted to learn to do it. Through a lot of hard work and education (which included attending lots of grooming shows like Groom Expo), Milena rose from a complete novice to become the 2018 Creative Groomer of the Year. Something we all know is that most groomers love to shop and get bargains, especially if it’s for a great cause. That’s why the Silent Auction is such an overwhelming success. All the proceeds from the auction go to help local pet rescue groups. Dedicated groomers Michelle Semken and MJ Vaskorlis had the daunting task of organizing and running the auction. MJ and Michelle shop year–round for the auction items,

and contact vendors and rescue groups for donations. “It’s a huge undertaking,” says Michelle. “But, our passion is helping the rescues and it is all worth it!” They store the items in their garages (even if it means that their cars have to sit outside) until it’s time for the auction. A very impressive $9,000 was raised this year. “The rescues use the money mostly for medical bills,” say Michelle and MJ. “Dogs brought into the rescues are given full medical work–ups and then treated for any issues that are found.” MJ and Michelle are very active in rescue work and helped obtain the dogs that were groomed in the Rescue Roundup. “Usually 45 dogs are used over a three day period,” says MJ. “This year we had nine rescues involved in supplying the dogs.” The dogs are the real winners.

Rescue Roundup competitions increase their chances of being adopted into a forever home. And they allow everyone in the audience to see what the competitors can do with dogs that look and act just like the ones that come into our salons everyday. After the Rescue Roundup was the Expo’s show–stopping contest that featured dogs that most of us don’t see on a regular basis–The Creative Grooming Competition. Fourteen artists filled the stage. These talented stylists had to have exceptional grooming and scissoring skills, and they also had to create, color and execute a theme with their entry. They turned mounds of brightly colored hair into jungle animals, medieval dragons, clowns, wuzzles and more. This is one competition that you just have to see in person to really appreciate. The months of planning, spec-

tacular colors and artistic genius all come to fruition right before your eyes. Everyone becomes part of the competition as they root on their favorite. The standing–room–only crowd exploded with wild applause, deafening whistles and roaring cheers as Leslie Waldrep was selected as the 2018 winner of the People’s Choice award. You could say that Groom Expo has grown to be the biggest and best show in the world because it is the ‘People’s Choice’ in grooming shows. Its main focus has always been to provide groomers with the things that we want and need to propel our businesses and careers to new levels, and to bring professionalism to our industry—education, competitions, fun, fellowship, shopping and so much more. Come next year and experience for yourself why Groom Expo really is the ‘People’s Choice!’ ✂

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS: 1. With bills cropping up around the country trying to regulate groomers, this might be a good time to consider becoming certified. Having a voluntary certification to add to your credentials could be very helpful if and when regulation becomes enforced. In recent years

One of my favorites is simply refusing pay from random customers when I know they are struggling. and stripping is something that every wire coated dog should have done to maintain proper coat texture and color. Wire coated dogs have guard wires and undercoat so they require both hand stripping and carding. This tutorial will focus on removing the undercoat, by the method of carding, on a Border Terrier puppy to promote healthy hair growth for future hand strip grooms. Prep work on a wire coated dog should be done while the dog is still dirty.

‘Tis the Season to

Stay Safe E by Khris Berry e

Most people look upon the Holiday Season with mixed emotions. Pet groomers are no different; however, the sights, sounds and emotions connected to the holiday rush can bring a different set of emotions to even the most seasoned pet professional.

W

ith any business, a busy season can bring excitement, extra money and new customers. When dealing with pets during the Christmas season, there are other factors to consider. The busy season in a grooming salon can also bring the additional burden of extra dogs to consider and care for; stressed clients; and stressed,

tired employees. Add to the mix well–meaning groomers who try to accommodate last minute holiday services, overbooked schedules, and set their own physical and emotional well–being aside by working extremely long hard hours, and the stage is set for mistakes, errors or oversights by even the most conscientious employee.

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT MISHAPS IN YOUR SALON DURING THE BUSY HOLIDAY RUSH? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Plan your holiday schedule and stick to it. Who hasn’t taken that last minute phone call during Christmas week and felt sorry for the poor little dog represented on the other end? By trying to accommodate

For the desperate client, an offer to assist their pet the week following the holiday will be an acceptable compromise. everyone, you risk diminishing the service time available for the clients to whom you are already committed. Explain to clients that your time is limited and you can only safely provide services for a limited number of pets in the holiday rush period. For the desperate client, an offer to assist their pet the week following the holiday will be an acceptable compromise. On that note, understand that you are NOT superhuman and are bound by the same amount of time and energy as other mere mortals. Don’t stretch yourself beyond physical or emotional limits. Accept your limitations and live within your personal pace. No one wins if you are overcommit-

ted, overtired or overstressed and have an accident with a client’s pet. Your family will appreciate this as well—you can enjoy your time off and remain festive rather than too exhausted to celebrate.

RISK–ASSESS YOUR WORKPLACE AND PROCEDURES. Many salons are guilty of letting policies slip when they are overrun with the pressures of seasonal customers. Understanding that when you are at your busiest, you should also be at your most vigilant is a great start. Rather than just stepping away from a pet for a moment to take a call or speak to a favored client, stay sharp and monitor your

Know how many dogs your shop can safely service as well as how many dogs each person can safely manage on any given day. Don’t exceed those limits. Your clients and their pets will thank you for your attention to their needs. Extra people in a work space don’t always mean extra productivity. Discuss workflow procedures and make certain that pets have private, uncrowded spaces. While enjoying their grooming service, every dog should have ample space so that they do not feel stressed. tion for pet groomers. Explaining to your client that the service their pet requires is best completed when you have extra time and attention for safety and their special needs is always an acceptable choice. By relying on your safety record and concern for the welfare of pets, groomers can dialog with owners about doing what is best for everyone involved. When Christmas chaos ensues, or when your shop feels more like a Polar Express than a Silent Night, following these parameters will help ensure that everyone in a grooming salon—from client to pet to employee—experience the best possible outcome this season.
