THE

OF ALL Okay. So, it has been quite the no good, very bad year. We have seen losses and hard–won successes, and wondered if things would smooth out. Finding a happy place in the midst of the madness isn’t easy, but it is within reach.

stress and the waves of stress from others. This can make us easier targets for people we come into contact with who are angry, hurting and distressed. There are studies that have brought to light that animal caregivers have one of the highest rates of suicide and depression,

and I feel one of the contributing factors could be the terrible habit of not caring for ourselves and our state of mind. Those of us that love and care for animals—and the clients that bring them to us—will give until it hurts us. And, a lot of the time, we

forget to fill back up again. We are the money makers, the bill payers, the children raisers and the dog– washing hustlers, and yet we are human; we break down and the effect is cumulative. How we think is how we feel, and how we feel often dictates our behavior. We can’t always stop ourselves from being angry, hurt or overwhelmed, but it is always a good idea to calm down as soon as is possible in order to examine the event and find the lesson so you can put it behind you. The course of our lives can be directly traced back to our strongest beliefs; what you put your focus on is where all of your energy goes, and that focused energy is what creates your life. There is one small promise that you can make to yourself with huge consequences. Vow to be kind to yourself. Train your inner voice to forgive and teach yourself instead of belittling and punishing that cherished face in the mirror. Treat yourself like you are best friends—because you are. I tend to be a violently positive person—ask anyone that knows me. But it does take practice and mindfulness in order to create my future happiness. I had an epiphany a few years ago while yelling at my hair in the morning because it would not be tamed. I realized all of the accumulated time I had subjected myself to negativity and hatred…from my own self. From that day forward, I vowed to speak to myself kindly and gently, admonishing when I make mistakes and forgiving myself for my human foibles. Anyone can choose to be happy, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Events will always happen in your life, and it remains your choice to assign negativity or value to the event in order to move through it and find a better tomor-

row. There are some steps I remind myself to take when I feel the pressure of my career, my marriage or my choices. I remind myself that it takes a step in the right direction to begin to put some distance and sanity back into the picture. Encourage others while not forgetting to encourage yourself. When you lift yourself up, you have extra to lift someone else up; encouragement becomes a chain reaction and you will never know how a smile and a word of encouragement can ripple across an

ocean and affect so many others. Find your purpose. There are so many opportunities in the pet industry and so many untapped niches, there is bound to be a perfect fit when you apply your creativity, individuality and talent. You have a unique perception of the world—do not be afraid to let your artist grow. Listen to others. Other people know things that you do not. It is always worth listening in order to find the pearl in the exchange that illuminates a missing piece of your

dream picture. Prepare your environment to welcome your new future. When you make changes, you signal the universe that you are ready to start receiving the fruits of your labors. Success is not in the planning, it is in the doing. You are worthy, you are here for a reason. The next generation of groomers need you, and the dogs need you. As we move into the new year, use this as a gentle reminder that you are important, you are a gift, and we will come through our struggles together. &

MORE THAN JUST PRODUCTS If you have adopted the all–natural philosophy, then what is your stance on shaving down Pugs or Labs? Do you consider that natural? ll–natural” is a term commonly used by groomers and shampoo companies to describe products, but what does that really tell us? One can assume it means that an ingredient or product was derived from nature at one point; but the question is, does it match their grooming style or is it just a cool buzz word? We are always looking for more biodegradable or “greener” products to protect our environment and our pets. And it is easy to understand that, as groomers, we want to do what is best for the pets in our care. But does all–natural meet that criteria? Here is some food for thought. Does your all–natural philosophy carry over to other aspects of your grooming? Many times, the idea

10

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 39 Ed 12 • December 2020

of all–natural only applies to the products that we put on our pets. But what about the other details of our grooming behaviors? If you have adopted the all–natural philosophy, then what is your stance on shaving down Pugs or Labs? Do you consider that natural? Often we give mixed messages whether we realize it or not. In an ideal world, we should consider letting most of our pets stay in their natural state by preserving the hair that protects them from the elements. I say most because various coat types have distinct needs and react differently. Two major classifications that need to be put forth are the difference of the pets that have a genetically predetermined coat length and

GroomertoGroomer.com

those that are continuously growing (long coat type). The genetically predetermined coat types can further be broken down into short– and medium–coated dogs. When we compare these coat types, they have quite different growth patterns, hair types and, therefore, needs. When we take a look at the genetically predetermined hair type, the coat grows out to a specific length and consistency, and then stops. As long as it is not compromised by shaving, skin disease or hormonal issues, it will stay at that length for the duration of the pet’s life. We often will see in dogs like Aussies, Shelties, Goldens and Collies that shave–downs will affect the coat’s future length and texture. One of the other significant

differences for the genetically predetermined hair coats and the long or continuously growing coats is how they function. In short and medium coats, the primary or guard hairs function very differently from the secondary hairs. The primary hairs are the main color and the protection of the skin and of the secondary hairs (this is why they are called “guard” hairs). Primary hairs tend to be more rigid and less porous than their secondary hair counterparts. They are designed to shed water, toxins and microbes. Secondary hairs lack structure and often retain water and toxins because they are more porous. Short coats have different needs from the medium coats because of their lack of density. They really need all the hair they

BEFORE

can get for protection. These breeds actually produce more oils or sebum as another layer of protection. Shaving them down makes them extremely vulnerable to skin issues. This group is way overrepresented in the veterinary clinic because of practices like shave–downs and degreasing products, which both go against the natural protections mechanisms, thus increasing the chances of problems. In medium–coated breeds, the “fluff ” is much more prevalent, thus the reason they are called double– coated. The secondary hairs are more the insulation (or “fluff ”) to the coat. The primary hairs are the structure of the coat and should extend past the point of the secondary hairs. The issue when shaving or clipping double–coated pets is that

AFTER

Shaving short breeds' coats makes them extremely vulnerable to skin issues.

When the endless vet visits fail to provide relief, it's time to change the course of healing. Obtain the knowledge you need to put you on the path to skin restoration with our transformative Certified Pet Aesthetician program, because here at Iv San Bernard, we believe that

when you cut the primary hair shorter, you lose the structure and the secondary hair springs up, leaving the coat uneven in some breeds (artic and similar breeds). By destroying this structure, we have eliminated the pet’s natural protection, which leaves the hair and skin more vulnerable to moisture, toxins and microbes. These coats need a lot of minerals and nutrients to grow strong and healthy. Sufficient nutrition, good conditioning (not degreasing) and avoiding products that decalcify (like vinegar) are important to maintain these coats. Breeds like Chows and Pomeranians tend to be very susceptible to shave–downs. Whether it be due to their hormonal makeup, changes with age or long, dormant cycles to the hair, it is not uncommon to have total hair loss and black skin disease or Alopecia X as a secondary issue to the shave–downs. In contrast, drop–coats, or continuously growing coats of the long–hair type, are favorable to trimming and shave–downs because the primary and secondary hairs are similar. This similarity provides the ability for us to be able to cut them down without the secondary consequences that we see in the short– and medium–coated breeds. It is important that we don’t shave them down too far though. It is always best to leave an inch or more so that the skin still has protection. And then there are the doodles…They are really in a class by themselves because they are a grab–bag of possibilities. As a groomer, you have to use your best estimation of the hair type of the dog in your care. Some cats also fit into these categories due to their mixed backgrounds. Most will fit

into the medium–length category, but if they are purebred, they are much easier to predict. So, if we are concerned with being an “all–natural” groomer, perhaps we should focus on our technique as well as purchasing high–quality products. All–natural doesn’t have a sufficient definition for products, but I think we can all agree that by leaving the coat of an animal the way that nature intended it to be, we are truly practicing an “all–natural” grooming lifestyle! & Dr. Cliff Faver graduated with a BS in Biology/BA in Chemistry before getting a Veterinary degree in 1987. The

Trouble

with (Scottish Terrier)

When pet groomers compare notes about working on different breeds, there are some common threads that pop up.

P

ugs seem to be universally adverse to having their nails trimmed, poodle mixes tend to have coats that are a nightmare to maintain, and many groomers agree they have no idea what to do with the clusters of hair we are supposed to leave on Scottish Terrier ears. The woman who trained me to groom gave me a good basic education, but Scotties were her breed— and though she owned several—I was never allowed to work on them. When I left her employ, I didn’t have a clue how to work on a Scottish Terrier. Ironically, we now have a sizeable Scotty clientele. One reason Scotty owners seek us out is that we know how to leave tufts on the ears. This tiny little bit of hair causes a lot of problems. Many groom-

16

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 39 Ed 12 • December 2020

ers just shave the entire ear, removing the signature tuft. While others end up leaving unruly wads of coat somewhere near the ear in an attempt to create the required tuft. Instructions in many grooming books and on various websites are difficult to understand, and for many groomers, the breed is a rare enough visitor to the table that there is not a lot of opportunity to practice. The breed standard, as stated by the American Kennel Club1, tells us that, “…the ears should be small, prick, set well up on the skull and pointed, but never cut. They should be covered with short, velvety hair. From the front, the outer edge of the ear should form a straight line up from the side of the skull. The use, size, shape and placement of the ear and its erect carriage are major elements of the keen, alert,

intelligent Scottish Terrier expression.” A long–time Scottish Terrier breeder/exhibitor once told me, “Scotties are a ‘head’ breed. You get the head wrong and you mess up the whole dog.” (I think she used saltier language than that, but you get the idea.) If the entire ear is shaved, the ears look larger than they are, and appear as sharp triangles jutting out of the skull. In the description above, the AKC says the ears should be small. Add to this the fact that many pet Scotties have larger ears than their show–type brethren, and getting those tufts right makes a big difference in the finished result of your groom. A well–placed tuft softens the look of the area where the ear is attached and can make large or poorly–placed ears seem more correct. On the flip side, if too much

When clipping ears on any breed, it is safest to use blades such as a #10 or shorter. Longer blades with wider spaces between the teeth are more prone to causing nicks. Always clip from the center of the ear towards the edge—never from the edge in. Use your fingers to brace the ear and keep the leather flat as you work.

hair is left, it calls attention to the head and ears—and not in a good way. I have seen otherwise well–groomed Scottish Terriers that appear to have small shrubs growing from their skulls, all but hiding their ears completely. So, what is a well–meaning groomer to do? First off, go to a site such as the above–mentioned American Kennel Club page and look at photographs there. One problem is that many of the Scotties pictured are dark–coated, and it can be hard to get a good view of proper tuft placement. Secondly, look in your grooming guide library and see if any of your reference books have descriptions that make sense to you. I find some more clear than others. You will find an excellent description with helpful line

drawings in Sam Kohl’s The All Breed Dog Grooming Guide, (4th Edition). To create the tuft, clip almost all the hair off the back of the ear, from the base of the skull to the tip. I prefer a #10 blade for this. Where the inside edge of the ear meets the skull, you will feel a shallow indentation in the skull. Leave the hair there to begin to create your tuft. Fig 1) Working on the front of the ear, using a #15 or #30 blade, carefully clip from the center of the ear towards the edges, removing all the hair on the outside of the ear, but leaving a clump of hair from the inside edge where you found the indentation. This will leave you with a little bunch of scruffy hair on the inside of the base of the ear, partially

covering the ear canal. Your clipper work should be clean and tight. Using scissors, carefully trim the outside edges of where you have clipped so they are very tidy. Fig 2) Next, gently fold the ear vertically from side to side as if you were creating a little taco. Using a fine comb, pull the hair to the front of your fold line. Angle thinning or chunking shears so they are leaning towards the tip of the ear and trim the tuft. The hair closer to the skull will be longer than the hair protruding higher. The tuft should not extend more than halfway up the ear. Fig 3) Let the ear stand naturally and comb the hair again. To finish, shape with thinners to achieve a pleasing look. Large ears or ears set too widely apart can be made to look more correct depending on the length and shape of the tuft you leave. A small amount of the tuft will be visible when you look at the dog from the back. Too much hair here is incorrect. Once you have mastered the art of creating a tuft on Scottish Terrier ears, you will see how it balances the signature “rectangular” head of the breed, and you may win a lot of new Scotty customers. & References: https://www.akc.org/

Do you think you need a glamorous

S

tarting at the top with the best of everything is seldom an option for anyone who is just starting out—and that’s perfectly okay. When you start small, you can grow at a pace that is right for you. You don’t need to spend $75,000–$100,000 on a vehicle to go mobile. You can buy a used grooming van or trailer, or even convert one yourself. If you want your own business, you don’t have to go deep in debt for a fancy salon in an upscale location. Some groomers have a salon in their own home, which often eliminates a separate rent payment. You can also become a house–call groomer. You still need to have equipment, supplies and insurance, but there are not a lot of other overhead costs. I started small, and I’m glad I did. When I opened my business many years ago, I converted an enclosed porch on my home into a grooming salon. I bought a used cast iron bathtub for twenty dollars. For a grooming table, I found an old wooden desk with drawers for storage. And, I purchased a brand new stand dryer. I got my little area ready to groom, but I had no idea how to run a business—or even how to get new customers to try out my services. I took donuts and a stack of my business cards to each of the local veterinarians and introduced myself. Then I went to the county courthouse and left more business cards at the office where you buy dog licenses. In the beginning, I advertised in the local papers and the yellow pages (I told you it was a long time ago.) From the very beginning, I was determined to do the best grooming job I could on every pet that came in to my shop, and to give the world’s best customer service. To help me achieve that, I attended every seminar and trade show that I could. I took classes that would help me improve my grooming skills, and ones on customer service

My business grew, and soon I had a really nice clientele. I began to form wonderful working relationships with them and their pets. Today my clients all call me “Aunt Kathy,” and that’s a connection that money can’t buy. and business building. I talked with other groomers at the trade shows and learned about the products and equipment that they used and loved. My business grew, and soon I had a really nice clientele. I began to form wonderful working relationships with them and their pets. Today my clients all call me “Aunt Kathy,” and that’s a connection that money can’t buy.

Over the years, I have remodeled my salon, put in beautiful cage banks, and installed back–saving equipment like my electric grooming tables and hydraulic bathtub. I would never want to groom without my clipper vacuum system, my bathing system, and all the other time and labor saving equipment I have. But, these improvements didn’t happen all at once. It took time.

And, I never went into debt to obtain them. When you have debt, you may be only one injury or one pandemic away from losing a business that took years to build. Always remember—you are special! Every groomer has or does something that sets them apart from others. Are you a whiz at hand–stripping? Or, is creative grooming and coloring your forte? Capitalize on what makes you and your services unique. As the owner/ operator of a small salon, I promote myself as “elite and exclusive.” My customers really love that I am able to give them personalized, one–on–one service in a low–stress atmosphere. My decision to start and stay small was the perfect choice for me, and I wouldn’t change a thing. I have all the business I can handle and no longer accept new pets. It’s not unusual for one of my clients to come in and tell me a story like this...“I was at the veterinarian with my little Bella last week for her checkup, and a lady came in with her Bichon and immediately began raving about how beautiful Bella is, and she asked me who grooms her. Of course I told her that Bella gets groomed by Aunt Kathy. The woman’s face fell as she said, ‘Oh, I tried to get in with her, but she is not taking any new pets.’” That’s exactly what you want for your business and yourself. To be in demand. You want people to value you and to feel that it is a privilege to be

one of your clients. They appreciate your skills and even get to brag a little because their pets are groomed by you. And, they usually never complain when you have a price increase. Over the years, I have had other experiences which confirm that you don’t have to be a big business to be recognized as an important fixture in your community. Like the day I was surprised to see Debbie, a teller from the bank, enter my lobby. A woman I didn’t know was with her. Debbie said, “Hi Kathy. This is Carol, the new manager of our bank.” Then Carol said, “Kathy, I have heard so much about you. I wanted to stop and meet the famous Aunt Kathy in person and bring you my business card and this gift basket. And if you need anything at all, please call me.” I was floored, but I tried not to show it. When I first opened, pet grooming wasn’t considered a “real” business, and the higher–ups at the bank didn’t even know my name. Now, the new bank manager came to meet me—and she brought me a gift! As I thought about her visit, I recalled the day I took donuts and business cards to all the local veterinarians, and how well that worked for me. I have been blessed to have a wonderful career that I truly love. I am still happily grooming in the same little salon where it all began, and I still look forward to each day. I have found my niche and I am not budging from it. Starting (and staying) small can be the best business decision you will ever make. & Kathy Hosler opened her shop in 1971 when she was just nineteen years old. She has built a terrific business and is still actively grooming today. Kathy is also a feature writer for Groomer To Groomer and Pet Boarding & Daycare Magazines, and has been nominated twice for the Barkleigh Honors Journalist of the Year Award as well as a Cardinal Crystal Achievement Award for Grooming Journalist.

BUT WHY?

NATURAL, ORGANIC &

HOLISTIC:

WHAT DO THEY

ALL MEAN?? 28

e live in an ever– changing world with ever–changing information about what the best or the healthiest products are to benefit our lives. Whether it’s a pet product or a personal product, it seems that every time I find something that I’m happy with, here comes the “new and improved” or “now better tasting,” or the one that I think can be the most confusing—“natural.” I always assumed the term “natural” had an obvious definition; it must mean that all the ingredients are, in fact, all natural. But why isn’t that always the case? The term “natural” evokes the impression that something is made from natural ingredients, but that’s not necessarily always true, so the term can be misleading. When it comes to grooming products, there’s a difference between natural products and organic products…and there’s a difference between a natural approach and a holistic approach. The definition of “natural” in the Merriam–Webster dictionary, as it pertains to nature, has thirteen different definitions. But, the long and short of it is, the word means it’s derived from nature. According to the USDA, for a product to be labeled “natural,” it must contain no artificial ingredients or added color, and must be minimally processed. This definition is a bit vague, especially with the term “minimally processed,” as it leaves room for interpretation. However, the definition of “organic” leaves little room for interpretation. According to the USDA, for a product to be labeled “organic,” the ingredients must have been produced through approved methods

If we’re speaking about pet food or treats, the term “natural “ means not artificial; however, it doesn’t stop the product from containing hormones.

that integrate cultural, biological and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity. Specifically, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation and genetic engineering must not have been used. That definition alone is an eye–opener; the fact that they have to specify that sewage sludge should not have been used in its cultivation speaks volumes to what non–organic methods can consist of. So, now that we’ve got an understanding of the difference between the term “natural” and the term “organic,” and the regulations surrounding their definitions, we also have to consider other factors of

natural products. If we’re speaking about pet food or treats, the term “natural “ means not artificial; however, it doesn’t stop the product from containing hormones. For example, if you buy your dog a protein–based treat like a jerky treat or freeze–dried meat treat, and the label states that the product is “natural,” it means the meat is not artificially produced or flavored, but it does not mean the meat is organic. In this instance, the meat can (and likely does) contain hormones. If the product we’re speaking about is a shampoo or conditioner, the term “natural” refers to no artificial ingredients and the base of the product being plant–derived

and free from sulfates (artificial lathering agents often added to commercial products). As if it wasn’t already confusing enough, there’s yet another term we often see in the wave of health–conscious pet products, and that term is “holistic.” The term “holistic” is generally defined as, “in consideration of the whole,” meaning that ingredients are whole ingredients and not heavily processed or artificial. Interestingly, the term “holistic” has no legal definition in reference to ingredients. Holistic–labeled products are not regulated by the FDA or the USDA, which do regulate organic products. The term “holistic” in pet foods is generally used as a marketing term to infer a more whole and healthy product. But, in actuality, since the term is not regulated, it’s often used freely. So unless it’s accompanied by the term “natural,” the holistic labeling really has no meaningful value. The overuse or misuse of terms like “holistic,” “natural” or “organic” can be misleading to consumers, so it’s always best to read labels and ingredient lists for more clarity. In a world of constantly improving research about health and nutrition, our products will continue to change and improve as well. Marketing can be confusing or deceiving, but doing a little bit of research and becoming educated about the products we use for our furry friends can go a long way in improving their lives and their health. &

KITTY'S KORNER

WHAT

ABOUT

(Cat)

According the old wives’ tale, finding a whisker is good luck. Many wonder what whiskers really do, why they are important for cats and what happens if they are altered in anyway.

O

wners tend to have varying opinions on the matter of whiskers. Some owners want to be sure groomers do not touch their kitty’s whiskers, while others are adamant the whiskers are trimmed or removed. Knowing a few whisker facts will go a long way in helping you educate cat owners while giving you assurance you are doing what is in the best interest of the felines you groom. When you carefully look at

34

whiskers, also called vibrissae, you will notice they are stiff and thick. Whiskers are actually two to three times as dense as cat fur. Sometimes whiskers are the same color as the feline’s coat which lead many to falsely assume whiskers are simply thicker fur. Nothing could be further from the truth. When we look at the fur of the feline, they are either single–, double– or triple–coated. Meaning they

have one, two or three hairs growing out of each hair follicle in the dermis layer of skin. The feline coat goes through a growth cycle, and when cut, usually does not have an adverse effect on the cat. Whiskers are much more complex than the coat of a feline. Each whisker is embedded three times as deep as that of the hair follicle, and is located in the hypodermis layer of skin. A cat’s whisker

Each individual whisker can directly send information to the brain to help the cat carefully consider the next move to make in their environment.

has muscles at the base which allow the cat to move each whisker individually. An example of whisker movement can be seen in the forward and backward movement of the whiskers on a cat’s upper lip when they are curious or scared. There are also nerve endings near the base of each whisker. While whiskers are very near the nerve endings, each whisker does not have its own nerve. The nerves are close enough to the vibrissa follicle that if one is pulled out, the feline will react in pain. The vibrissae follicles are individually represented in the sensory cortex of the brain. This is interesting because it means each individual whisker can directly send information to the brain to help the cat carefully consider the next move to make in their environment. The long shaft of the whisker helps felines judge space and distance. The tip of each whisker has a sensory organ called a proprioceptor that detects vibrations and these organs help the cat sense the world around

them by detecting movement. Feline faces have three sets of whiskers. The longest set, on the muzzle, are called genal whiskers and are arranged in well–defined rows and embedded in a thick pad above the upper lip. The whiskers located above the eyes are called the supraorbital whiskers. Mandibular whiskers are located along the jaw. Finally, the carpal whiskers are the set of whiskers that are located on the back of the front legs. Now that we understand the structure of the vibrissae, what exactly do they do? The simple answer is that whiskers give the cat information about their environment to help them find food, stay safe and to effectively move around their ecosystem. While whiskers do not seem as important for house cats who are provided for and live in a safe and consistent home— compared to outside cats that need to hunt, protect themselves from predators and take care of their basic needs—the information whiskers provide is equally important for both types of felines. The proprioceptor organs at the tip of each vibrissa let the feline know their exact place in space and allow the cat to know where their body parts are in relationship to each other. Whiskers also help the cat measure distances which allow their graceful, quick and accurate movements on narrow platforms and high surfaces. While navigating in the dark, whiskers sense the air flow around objects, letting the cat know if there is enough room for their body to comfortably pass by. When hunting, the carpal whiskers give the cat important information about how the prey is situated in their paws so the cat does not get injured, and indicates where the kill bite should be placed. We all know that accidents happen. The good news is if one or several whiskers accidentally get sucked into the clipper vacuum, the cat will be ok. The whiskers will grow back.

information is given to a feline from their vibrissae when they are playing with a toy or protecting themselves from a rough playmate. Whiskers aide not only a cat’s mobility, but keep the cat safe and provide the cat a sense of security. When the whiskers are altered, there is damage to the sensory organ; however, they do not feel pain because cats do not have nociceptors on the whisker. That said, some owners report a change in behavior if multiple whiskers are trimmed. Surprisingly, some cats do chew off their own whiskers. Mother cats often chew off their kittens’ whiskers to keep them from wandering away from the litter. Elderly cats who always lie on the same side against an object tend to have shorter or broken whiskers on that side of their face.

GroomertoGroomer.com

While chewing or cutting whiskers does not seem to evoke a pain response, plucking does. What does all of that mean for us as groomers? Mainly it guides us on why cat whiskers should be left intact and helps us to educate our clients when they request alterations to their feline’s whiskers. It also helps us to explain to the feline owners what is going on when a cat has altered its own whiskers. We all know that accidents happen. The good news is if one or several whiskers accidentally get sucked into the clipper vacuum, the cat will be ok. The whiskers will grow back. The surrounding whiskers will provide enough information to help keep the cat safe and allow the cat to successfully manipulate their environment. The main concern when whiskers get accidentally cut off is the effect on spatial awareness. If the cat lives in a home where no one (human or other pet) is chasing the cat, there is little worry. The concern comes when that cat needs to escape from a child or another pet. But if the furniture stays in the same place in the home, the cat already knows where their body fits and how to escape when needed. Having altered whiskers is a serious concern for cats that go outside because they need every advantage possible to secure food and protect themselves from predators. Whiskers can be a sensitive topic when talking to feline owners. The best policy is to leave the whiskers natural. If a whisker is accidentally cut off, tell the owner. Let the owner know it should not affect the cat if it is inside the home. Reassure the owner, that during the regrowth process, the surrounding whiskers will take over to help the feline function in their home environment. &

dealing with relative humidity. Notice how much longer it takes to dry a dog on a humid day than on a cold, dry day? You can also allow dogs to rest on a towel for a few minutes before using a force or cage dryer. After a few minutes, brush the dog to separate the hair, as this breaks up the surface area you have to dry. You may have to experiment with how long to allow a dog to rest, but this saves a lot of hand–drying time. Did you know that cut hair can be composted? In fact, in the Fall, many of my clients want it to wrap flower bulbs in. Hair–wrapping of bulbs tends to discourage the squirrels from digging them up. I also have a few eccentric clients who want to spin hair into yarn. So, I save it for them. In order to spin it, it has to be brushed hair, where the fibers are “jumbled.” After washing your towels (and making sure not to use too much detergent), you could try line–drying them for several hours before putting them into an electric tumble dryer, if your space and environment allow for this. Make it a point to keep as much out of the trash as possible, because there is no “away.” When we dispose of garbage, we also pay for a place to put it. You might want to ask your power company if they provide energy audits for your business. Many do this for free. They might even give you energy–efficient light bulbs and new motion–detecting light switches. We can all be environmental stewards by making a few small changes to our daily grooming practices. When executing this, you want to make sure you create straight, parallel lines on the inside and outside of the leg when viewed from the rear. You can also see that this appears to have “straightened” this dog’s rear leg. This is done simply by pretending the leg was straight to begin with. This not only helps set the foot underneath the dog and helps make a straight column, but also sets the length for the front of the leg. If you have a dog that is lower on leg (such as this one), you can cheat this line a little by scissoring from the tuck–up area to a spot above the elbow instead. into the shorter hair on the topline. Fig 14) For those pet owners that prefer their dogs’ coats to look a little more natural, you can Marcel the coat after your scissoring is complete. This technique is common in certain terriers, such as the Kerry Blue, and is completed by spritzing the coat down until fully saturated and then combing to add wave back into the full jacket of the dog.
