hey say that an entrepreneur is someone who solves problems for profit. As pet groomers, the main problem we solve is dirty pets. However, we all do that. How can we differentiate ourselves from the other groomers in our area? Solve another problem. We can do this by educating our clients on important topics that concern the well being of their pets. One such topic is how diet impacts a pet’s health. If you were to do a Google search on the effect of food and people, you would find hundreds of independent research papers linking poor nutrition
6
to chronic medical conditions. If you were to do that same search for pets, you would find few independent studies. As a holistic groomer, my goal is not to simply tell my clients what they should be feeding their pets, but rather to give them the tools to make their own decisions based on their needs. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE LABEL The following terms have been “defined” by AAFCO. AAFCO (Association of Animal Feed Control Officials) is a non–governmental and self–regulating agency. Some states may enforce their guidelines. • Human–Grade Ingredients:

70% organic ingredients, they can specify which ingredients are organic on the label. • Premium or Holistic: Totally unregulated. • Grain Free: Also not regulated. It does not mean free of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates could include added sugars and potatoes. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) regulates the Made In USA label. The rule states that all or virtually all of the components must be produced and assembled in the United States. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulates labels in four instances. As an example I will use a chicken product: 1. Chicken for Dogs. This must contain 95% chicken including water for processing. Not including water, the percentage must be at least 70%. If it were Chicken and Liver For Dogs, then the combination of chicken and liver must be that 95% and as chicken is listed first, the percentage of chicken should be higher than liver. 2. Chicken Dinner for Dogs. The chicken content must be anywhere between 25–94% chicken. They can use a similar name such as entrée, platter, or formula. Chicken and Liver Dinner For Dogs follows the same rule as in 1. Whichever ingredient is listed first must have the higher percentage. 3. Chicken with Cheese for Dogs. The cheese must be at least 3% of the product. 4. Chicken Flavored Dog Food. There has to be a detectable amount of chicken in this food. Now we can see where some confusion could come in. Chicken for

Ingredient listing on the label is not the same as products for people. People product ingredients are listed by volume. Pet food product listings are by weight. Proteins such as chicken and beef are going to be heavier than any of the other added ingredients. Dogs is radically different than Dog Food with Chicken. Ingredient listing on the label is not the same as products for people. People product ingredients are listed by volume. Pet food product listings are by weight. Proteins such as chicken and beef are going to be heavier than any of the other added ingredients. That’s why it’s important to know those four distinctions in product names. Some manufacturers may disguise lesser quality ingredients
with special names that sound good. I direct my clients over to www.dogfoodproject.com where they can look up ingredients to see what they really are. Food discussions often come up when a client wants to talk about poor quality appearing coat. I begin the conversation like this: “Skin is the largest organ in the body. If there is a problem going on elsewhere, the pet’s body is redirecting resources away from the skin to where the problem is located. Poor quality coat
can be the first sign of an underlying chronic medical condition or poor or incorrect nutrition. Your veterinarian can make the distinction.” That opens the dialogue regarding proper nutrition, while making it clear I am not making a veterinary diagnosis. From there I discuss various “premium” quality pet foods and where they can purchase them. I discuss how to gradually introduce new food to prevent gastric upset. I explain a pet can have an allergy to any food, including a human grade protein. MY CLIENTS ALWAYS ASK HOW I FEED MY OWN DOGS I personally take the easy way when it comes to raw food. I am not preparing anything. I am just going to open up a package knowing it is fully complete. However, that is also the expensive way to feed pets a raw diet. For those clients interested in learning how to properly prepare and introduce a raw diet to a pet that is currently being fed a commercial diet, I send them to www.keepthetailwagging.com. It is a great resource for owners just starting out feeding a raw diet to their pets. Taking the time to educate clients on the benefits of nutrition and how it benefits their overall health and longevity shows them we are willing to go the extra mile for them. When we become the go–to person for our clients, they become loyal clients. And isn’t that what we all want? ✂

and standards develop. One such standard that is emerging in dialogues between groomers is the concept of “firing” a customer. Stories such as the following are shared by groomers and how you handle this client can determine the overall health of your business. Sharon is the proud owner of a Cocker Spaniel named Lilly. Lilly is the second Cocker Sharon has

owned—and she kept her former Cocker in full, flowing coat for the 14 years. Sharon came to you a few years ago when Lilly was about 18 months old with tales of leaving her former groomer because they shaved Lilly without her permission. You’ve done your best with her— you’ve suggested a regular grooming schedule. You’ve de–matted Lilly when she showed up after 10 weeks

with downy soft dense matting near her skin. You’ve shown Sharon how to comb her; how not to bath and towel dry her. She makes irregular appointments, cancels occasionally, and demands that you offer your skill and time at a discounted rate to correct her neglect of her dog’s coat. She doesn’t answer your call when you finish her dog and picks up late. Sharon is the queen of making excuses for her bad customer behaviors and leaving you feeling angry, abused, and undervalued. What you choose to do with the customer may determine how you feel about yourself, how your staff views you and your business, and how you interact with other customers in the future. Informing a customer that you aren’t willing to offer them services in the future is both intimidating and frightening. Learning to do so in a polite and concise manner is a necessary part of growing as a professional. The “firing” of a customer does not have to be argumentative, combative, or inflamed. First, identify if you feel the client/professional relationship has been severed to the point that it cannot be repaired. Consider this without emotion; would you be willing to refuse service to every customer who may commit the same infraction? If the answer is no, then you should likely reconsider the decision. As a professional service provider, if you feel that the actions of the customer are costing you revenue or taking unfair advantage of your time or resources, it may be time to sever the relationship. I prefer to think of “firing” a client in terms of setting them free. The consumer/provider relationship is based on the premise that you are

15
offering a valued service in exchange for compensation. When the client no longer values the services you offer or the compensation is skewed (for example, she cancels appointments, thus costing you revenue), that relationship is no longer functioning as it should. It makes sense that if a client doesn’t value your services they would not continue to request them, but all too often it doesn’t happen that way. That is the point where you decide to actively severe the client/ groomer relationship. When you’ve decided to “fire” Sharon, you should let her know that you will no longer be offering her your services and why you have made that decision. Expect that you are delivering news that won’t be welcome and anticipate an emotional
response from her. Have your reasoning laid out and let her know in very condensed terms why you have reached this decision. A simple statement that you are a professional and your time and resources are being affected by her habits may be enough to relate your point. Letting her know “This is my livelihood and I have to focus on other customers who are a better fit for my business,” is often a great start. When I fire a customer, I like to be ready with a recommendation of someone who I feel will suit them better. Perhaps there is someone in your area who can better handle her personality, dog, or scheduling limitations. There may be another groomer in your area who will appreciate her and

be willing to commit the time and attention she requires. This is not the time to place blame or hone in on her shortcomings in the client/ provider relationship. You should assure her that you are interested in her continued satisfaction and are hopeful that your recommendation will better suit her needs. In fact, in many cases, clients such as Sharon become model clients with another provider—whether she learns from her past transgressions or someone suits her better, ultimately we look forward to hearing that she is a happy client elsewhere. By establishing boundaries with your clients, you and your staff will realize many benefits. You will remove the clients and dogs from your client base who are costing

You and your staff will be released from the stressful interactions which inevitably occur when you have a client who wants to constantly negotiate your service, attention, and dictate how you perform your job. A grooming salon can become a place of comfort and enrichment for both the groomers and the dogs when designed with training in mind. Considering all the senses from a dog’s perspective can provide relief and comfort to the dogs who visit.

iving owners an understanding of the differences a salon is providing to create a thoughtful and calm experience creates loyalty and trust.
Scent
Dogs use scent to explore their world and determine the safety of the environment. To a dog, sniffing is the equivalent of “reading the paper” and providing unique scents can provide a distinct distraction for the dog, while aiding in relaxation under stressful experiences. Generally, scents we find appealing can be overpowering for a dog. Dogs find sniffing potential prey extremely reinforcing and will often tune out the world momentarily to focus on it. Thankfully, dogs have an olfactory system forty times great than ours,
GroomertoGroomer.com
so we are able to use a small amount of scent to gain their attention. To incorporate scent in a grooming salon, there are a few fun tricks. • Using a zip tie, attach metal tins to the grooming table leg or arm about a foot from the floor or table surface. Attach these same tins near the door entrance, the bathtub and in the kennels. Fill a small jar with gauze pads and add an essential oil of deer, duck, fox, bear or rabbit. All of these scents are sold at hunting stores. Stuff the tins with the gauze pads and change the pads each week. • Studies found that familiar human scents are the most comforting to dogs. Giving owners the option to bring a t–shirt or small item from home to place in the dog’s kennel can provide physical relief

to the dog and mental relief to the owner. • After using a large amount of cleaner or disinfectant, neutralize the area with baking soda. Try to keep the other scents of the shampoos and fragrances to a minimum by walling off the bathing area and keeping a neutralizing filter near the door. • Employee odors such as cigarettes and heavy perfume can be hard to neutralize so encourage groomers to
switch aprons or smocks when going in and out for breaks. • If there is a dog potty yard, allowing them a full 10–15 minutes to sniff when they arrive, and in– between their bath and haircut can reduce stress and provide enrichment. • Adding essential oils to different parts of the salon is therapeutic. Diluting the oils into a spray bottle is easy and cost effective, though diffusers are becoming less expensive each day and add a continuous
benefit to the salon. Adding scents to the brush handles, slip leads, groomer’s stations and bathing area can boost the mood and immune systems of both the groomers and the dogs. While some oils are safe for direct skin contact, it’s best to remain safe and use the oils as an aromatic only. The most popular scents for calming dogs are Cedar Wood, Cypress, Frankincense, Lavender, Vetiver, and Bergamot. Use them

Kennel Experience
While some grooming salons are fortune enough to be kennel– free, there are still a lot of things a kenneled salon can do to reduce stress for the dogs. • Keep the kennel room cool. It’s easy for salons to become hot and humid if there is not a plan in place
humans and dogs, and while often overlooked, keeping the salon cool should be a high priority. for keeping the salon cool. Heat and humidity raise blood pressure in both humans and dogs, and while often overlooked, keeping the salon cool should be a high priority. Averting direct sunlight with shades, using an exhaust fan and keeping the wet towels in a separate and contained area will all help. • Creating a round surface in square kennels will create comfort for nervous dogs. Nervous dogs will always put their backs to a surface and being able to avoid corners is
great relief. Rolling a beach towel long ways or sticking a pool noodle into a right angle corner of the kennel can help. • Give dogs a “Clean Kong” by filling a Kong toy up with water and freezing it. Adding apple chunks or cheerios are clean and easily digestible add–ins. Enrichment this way is mess free for the groomer and novel for the dog. Toys filled with treats are even better, if the owner approves. • Arrange the kennels so they are not directly facing each other.

Sounds If using a narrow room, zig zag the kennels so that dogs are diagonally looking at each other. Having an entrance and an exit to a kennel room is the best way to avoid walking a dog through the middle of a long line of dogs. • If dogs will inevitably be walking right in front of other dogs who are waiting in kennels, a thin screen or flap attached to the kennel is a pro–active solution. • Diminish the hair dryer and motor sounds as much as possible. Keeping the dryer on a bath mat and surrounded by towels (without blocking the motor) will help. Using a separate room with noise reducing walls will keep the rest of the salon quieter. • Using a snood, or soft hood over the dog’s ears is comforting to most
dogs. Snoods can be ordered online or easily made by cutting the sleeves off of sweaters. • Adding music can calm both people and dogs. Keep the volume at a minimum and use a CD-player or iPod, as radio waves emit high frequencies that dogs’ ears are sensitive to. Brachycephalic (short-nosed) dog breeds find it particularly discomforting. Allowing the dog to look out the front of the kennel without having air blown into their ears, eyes, or noses will improve their experience. • Creating noise policies that encourage employees to communicate without needing to yell is important and not always as easy as it sounds. A flashing red or black light bulb on a switch that lets groomers in the back know that groomers in the front need them is a quiet solution.

We know dogs see the world differently from us, which gives us knowledge in how to design salons so they are visually appealing for both dogs and people. Red, yellow and green are perceived as one hue, while blue and purple are perceived as another. Cyan and magenta are perceived as grey or neutral. • Tint any windows that lead directly outside. Light in motion can increase adrenaline and some dogs find following light a compulsion. • Avoid mirrors that reflect light straight at a dog’s eye level. • Place grooming tables on a diagonal pathway instead of directly across from each other. • Keeping in mind that a dog’s vision is only 20/75, large pictures of dogs and cats should be avoided. New dogs and puppies should be given extra time to acclimate. • Having an extra set of the bath and grooming mats in the lobby is one way to get owners involved. Keep treat jars hung on the wall nearby and print out instructions for the owners to encourage their dogs to step on the mats. Giving dogs the choice and rewarding them with food while their owner is still safely by can create all the confidence they need for the rest
of their surface experience. • Making sure a dog has even footing on a non-slip surface is vital for bath, kennel and grooming time. • Keep surfaces cool by using a cooling mat in warmer, humid months. Once the changes are made, be sure to create an educational handout letting customers know. Educating and informing owners of the changes a salon has made to increase the comfort level of their dog’s visit is a great way to boost sales, create customer loyalty and facilitate trust. ✂

THE EFFECT OF NUTRITION ON SKIN & COAT The body is a complex organism made up of many different systems that work together in harmony to keep itself alive. When we think of “Metabolism”, we usually think of weight loss or gain, but really, metabolism is the act of being alive.

any chemicals, enzymes, vitamins and minerals play a part in the health of the body that shows in the lovely coat, or lack thereof, and bright and beautiful eyes. We all know that good nutrition plays a part in a healthy body, but let’s explore how it affects the skin and coat of the creatures that we groom and care for every day. Skin is mostly made up of fats, minerals and collagen. When

the needs of the skin have been met nutritionally, the result is a beautifully formed coat of hair that is full of texture, color and life. Protein, vitamins, fats and minerals all play an important part in keeping the skin healthy. A healthy skin provides a healthy haircoat. Skin, and by extension, the coat, is a barrier that keeps toxins, pollutants and UV rays out and moisture, fat and minerals in. Research has shown that protein

Cats are true carnivores and require an animal based diet. Cats can’t convert carotene to retinol so the vitamin A that is present in plants is unavailable to them. Zinc, copper, biotin, vitamin A and E, and riboflavin are essential for tissue repair, pigmentation, protection against free radicals and proper processing of fats and proteins. Fatty acids also play an important role in the health of the skin. Omega–6 or linoleic acid is responsible for keeping the fat content in the skin at optimal levels.
Omega–3 or alpha–linoleic acid has anti-inflammatory effects. Too much or too little of any of these important pieces of the diet can have serious consequences in the skin and hair. There is an ongoing debate in our industry (raging, flaming, bridge burning etc.) about the quality, safety, nutritional soundness of certain brands, raw versus processed, home cooked, dehydrated and so on. It is not the aim of this article to weigh in on any of these dietary choices for our pets but to encourage the understanding and use of topical nutrition.

Through the use of topical minerals, vitamins and fats(conditioners), we can help support the skin from the outside. When you give the skin what it is lacking it will respond. Proper skin care is: Detoxify, Cleanse and Hydrate. All dogs and cats require a sebum layer for the skin to stay supple and the hair shafts to be smooth and closed. When this is disrupted, we begin
to see oiliness, dryness, scale and crusts. All dogs and cats need oils, minerals and collagen but they need them in different proportions. The shorter the coat, (or hairless) the more oils are needed. The longer and finer a coat is, the more collagen is needed. Double coated breeds and primitives lay somewhere in the middle with a need for minerals. Detoxification can be achieved with cosmetic clays, such as bentonite clay, dead sea mud, and oils, such as ginkgo, emu, and camellia. There are a few excellent
commercial preparations available for various skin issues. Cleanser or shampoo should address the issue that the individual pet is presenting. Bacterial needs an antibacterial, fungal issues need an anti–fungal, allergies, which are protein based require a quality protein shampoo. Vitamin and mineral sprays are also a good way to boost the cutaneous immune system and can be used daily for pets that have open skin or extreme dryness or damage. I have found that the same vitamins, minerals and fats that are
good for the inside of the pet are also good for the outside when found in the ingredient list in products that are used during the grooming process. It is important to remember that dogs and cats are individuals, even within the same breed. Part of being successful in topical nutrition and therapeutic grooming is being able to experiment, keep your mind open to new processes and do your research. ✂

RECOGNIZING A PET THAT HAS

the

ou have primped and pampered them for a lifetime. No matter how fussy a dog or cat might be when they come in to be groomed, each and every one of them has made a way into your heart. Pets are never here as long as we would wish. When it comes time for each to pass from this earth, the simple truth is that you feel the sadness too! Imagine the void that it has left with your customer whose pet has crossed the rainbow bridge. These pet parents have trusted you with their fur babies, many since they were puppies or kittens, and that tells a lot about you! So honor that relationship by finding a way to recognize a beloved animal.
38
5 Reasons for Recognizing
A Customer's Pet Loss 1) Pets are family too! When someone’s family member passes away you would traditionally recognize that loss. For so many pet owners their dog or cat is thought of and treated like family. 2) Groomers are “hairdressers to pets”. You have been entrusted with the care of someone’s pet, often for years. The services that you provide to a pet and their owner create a strong and lasting bond. 3) Disenfranchised grief. Studies show that grief from pet loss is often more difficult than that of losing a relative. Additionally, outsiders misunderstand these feelings which can leave

the pet parent to feel alone and embarrassed about their grief. 4) Children take it hardest. If your customer has children you can assume that this may be their first experience with death, so including them in your pet loss condolence is very important. 5) Customer satisfaction. An old marketing adage says that a satisfied customer is a repeat customer. Honoring a beloved fur baby speaks volumes. On top of that, the average American owns 3 to 4 pets over a lifetime, increasing the likelihood that when their next dog or cat needs to be groomed, they will call on you!

4 Simple Ways to
Honor & Recognize a Pet That Has
Crossed the Rainbow Bridge Assuming that you know about the loss, here are some simple ways that you can let a valuable customer know that you care. Even if you don’t find out about it right away, anything that you do at a later time will be received with an open and grateful heart. 1) Send a sympathy gift. It doesn’t have to be expensive, there are many options available from trinkets to living memorial ideas such as flowers and plants. If you can customize the gift or message it is even better. 2) Send a handwritten card or note. Taking the time out of your
busy day to pen a personalized message would be greatly appreciated. 3) Post a tribute to the pet on your social media page/s. If you have a social media presence, posting a tribute is the modern way to commemorate an animal’s special place in your heart. The added bonus is that it gives you another reason to post to your followers. 4) Make a personal phone call. Who uses the phone anymore to actually make a call? With texting and SMS messaging, the phone doesn’t ring often, other than with pesky sales people. Therefore, imagine how your soothing voice could help a grieving heart. ✂
Pet loss hurts rts
Remy Bibaud has been a serial entrepreneur for most of her career. After selling a business servicing charter schools throughout the US, Remy's desire to give back took over (she has been involved with Make-A-Wish for 20 years). Remy's young dog Olive had passed, and when she received the ashes she’d wondered, "Is this it? Is this all I can do to honor such a beautiful soul?" A seed was planted and Pet Perennials literally grew from there. She and her business partner Lori Davidson launched Cherished Ones LLC with a mission of helping folks heal from loss with eco-friendly and sustainable products.

YOU R GR OOM ING Dear Michell, I have tried and tried to develop speed in my daily work and as hard as I try, I am still only doing a fraction of the work of my co-workers. Do you have any advice for me on how to get faster?
A
h speed, it is a challenge every day for every groomer. Some people have a temperament for speed and others, not so much. I am going to assume that since you are asking, you are one of the not–so–muches. There are two typical kinds of slow pokes. One is the disorganized, distracted and random groomer who shows up every day without a plan and somehow gets through it all. The other is anal retentive, fixated and can’t stop finding more things to perfect. No matter what your issues,
42
you will have to make some changes in order to improve your speed. What is the functionality of your space? It is very important that you have everything conveniently located and in good working order. In the case of the organized groomer, it may mean that you scrutinize your work space for efficiency. Look for things that might have been in the same location for years, but in all actuality, if you traded their place with something else, it would be easier to reach. If you do not have a current organization system then please take an hour or

two to clean up your area and organize your tools in a way that they are all accessible and useful. Make sure that all of your tools are in good working order. Try having a weekly check list of clipper and blade maintenance, as well as scissors. Also fill all of your product bottles the night before. Make sure you have good lighting. An inexpensive floor lamp might make a big a difference. Check your eyeglass prescription, you would be surprised how quickly that can change. Mirrors are a good way to improve efficiency.

Develop a system & stick to it on every groom. This will help you work through each haircut in a fluid, efficient & thorough manner. Most groomers do this to some degree but take the time to fine tune it for yourself.
They allow you to check the other side of the pet while working on this side, therefore saving time going back and forth. A table that you can move around or has a swivel top is a big time saver because the dog can simply stand still while you work. Make sure that you have good water pressure, good velocity dryers and solid dog handling skills. Have shampoos that clean the dog in one shampoo and make sure it rinses quickly and easily. Multiple baths
are costly, both in time and product. Consider taking a look at the pet before the bath to determine if the pet needs a flea shampoo. Plucking the ear hair (if your salon does that) can be a good way of determining the ear health and if you might need a de-greaser on the ear furnishings. Clipping the nails and foot pads can be a good way of determining if the pet needs a medicated shampoo. Knowing ahead of time what products are needed will save you

While the nutrient composition is the primary reason for ingredient selection, there are also other factors that need to be considered. Trends in the human and pet food industries can impact the appeal of an ingredient. Novel ingredients that serve a specific function can also influence selection. In addition, ingredient certifications are becoming increasingly common because it allows pet food brands to clearly communicate with consumers about the methods used to produce a food.

Dogs, but not cats, are able to meet their nutrient requirements from a carefully balanced plant-based diet.
The fishery must also comply with relevant rules and regulations and be adaptive to changing circumstances. Several other seafood sustainability programs exist that provide recommendations for choosing sustainable seafood. Dogs, but not cats, are able to meet their nutrient requirements from a carefully balanced plant–based diet. The Certified Vegan standard identifies foods that do not contain any animal products. The criteria that must be met to receive this certification include proof that none of the ingredients were sourced from animals, no animal testing was performed on the product, proper segregation of vegan and non– vegan ingredients is ensured, and adequate clean out procedures must
be performed in facilities that make vegan and non–vegan products.
NOVEL INGREDIENTS New ingredients seem to continuously appear on pet food labels. Pet parents are looking for ingredients that provide unique nutritional or functional benefits for their pets. Some of these novel ingredients include tapioca, pulses, coconut oil, prebiotics and probiotics. With food sensitivities seemingly on the rise in pets, limited ingredient diets that contain novel ingredients are increasing in popularity. Novel ingredients are beneficial for limited ingredient diets used to treat food sensitivities because if a pet has not previously been exposed to a food, then it is less likely that the food will cause an adverse reaction. Some of the novel ingredients that are being used in limited ingredient pet foods include tapioca, peas, lentils and chickpeas. Protein is the component in foods primarily responsible for causing adverse food reactions. Since

tapioca is not a source of protein, it is well suited for limited ingredient diets. Peas, lentils and chickpeas are ‘pulses’, the edible seeds of plants in the legume family. Pulses are excellent sources of carbohydrates, protein, fiber and essential vitamins and minerals. They are also beneficial from an environmental perspective because they add nitrogen, an essential nutrient for plant growth, back into the soil. Coconut oil is a rich source of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). These are shorter chains of fatty acids that contain 8 to 12 carbon atoms and include lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid. Due to their shorter length, these fatty acids are handled differently by the body than long chain triglycerides. MCTs are more easily digested and absorbed, so they create less strain on the pancreas and digestive system.
This may benefit dogs that suffer from digestive and metabolic diseases. Probiotics are the good microorganisms that can improve the health of the gastrointestinal tract, whereas prebiotics are a source of food to feed these good bacteria. Stress, antibiotics or a poor diet can upset the balance of microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract and lead to illness. Supplementing with probiotics and/or prebiotics can help to improve digestive health. Some examples of probiotics found in pet foods are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Enterococcus faecium. The most common examples of prebiotics used in pet food are chicory root, inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS).
FOOD FOR THOUGHT Sustainability, transparency, novel ingredients and food certifications are some of the current hot trends in the pet and human food industries. However, it is important not to get too carried away with trends when choosing the right food for a pet. Look beyond the claims and evaluate the
company behind the brand. Ensure that the food is formulated by qualified nutritionists, meets extremely high quality and safety standards, and has a team of health and nutrition specialists available if you or your clients have any questions or need help selecting the right food for your pet. ✂ Dr. Jennifer Adolphe graduated with her PhD in companion animal nutrition from the University of Saskatchewan. GROOMING MATTERS by Daryl Conner
AFTER
BEFORE
GROOMING THE
ENGLISH SHEPHERD
Y
ou may have had this breed of dog on your table before and never known it. English Shepherds, also known as “farm collies,” “old time collies,” and “farm shepherds,” were brought to America by early British settlers. They put the dogs to work on farms and homesteads, guarding both livestock and property, as well as herding and hunting. According to some sources, English Shepherds were some of the most common dogs in the United States in the 1930’s. It was rare to
52
find a farm that didn’t have one or more helping around the property. Relatives of the more common Border Collie, the breed is recognized by the UKC and has not rocketed to popularity of its cousin. Ranging from 18–23 inches at the shoulder, and weighing between 40–60 pounds, with a rectangular build, this breed comes in a variety of colors. You may find them in black and white, tri color, clear sable or shaded sable. Their double coat is medium in length, and longer at the ruff and furnishings. The outer coat
Groomer to Groomer • Vol 36 Ed 2 • February 2017
GroomertoGroomer.com
is normally straight, but may be wavy or (rarely) curly. The ears are low and semi–erect. This breed is a “loose– eyed”, upright herder, differing from Border Collies who crouch and stare at the animals they are herding to move them. As a natural breed, they require little trimming. Their vibrissae (whiskers) should not be cut, as this is a breed that often works stock and relies on those sensory hairs to do their job properly. Heavily coated dogs may do well to have thick hair on their feet and hocks trimmed
(Fig. 1), and some shaping of the ears and furnishings just to tidy the appearance is acceptable. This may be done with scissors, or, better yet, chunkers, to leave a very natural look. The coat should not show signs of being scissored or overly trimmed. Because of the double coat, if the dog is not brushed regularly, there may be some matting, but it should be easily removed with general grooming practices. Begin with a good, basic cleansing shampoo to remove dirt from the skin and coat. Two or more baths may be necessary depending on the level of soil present. Using a product that helps remove loose coat and lessen tangles is beneficial. If there is a buildup of old undercoat present, following the shampoo with a good conditioner, especially where the coat is thick and on the furnishings, is helpful. After rinsing and towel drying, spritz on a drying product and lightly brush it through the coat. Using a high velocity dyer, dry the back coat with the lay of the hair so it will lie smooth and close to the body when finished. Direct the air flow close to the skin and work out towards the tips on the ruff and furnishings, allowing the air to push dead coat up and away from the skin as it dries. Once dry, brush any remaining loose hair out with a slicker or pin brush. Follow with a medium/fine comb, making sure there are no hidden tangles and that all dead coat is removed. Pay special attention to the soft fur behind the ears, the arm pit area, and where the furnishings are thick, such as the tail and the back of the thigh area. Use a trimmer to neaten up the hair between the pads on the bottom of the feet (Fig. 2). Trim any hair that hangs from the top of the foot, over the pad area. Using a slicker,
gently brush the hair up between the toes, and carefully trim it to shape a neat, tidy foot. English Shepherds often have an excess of silky or fluffy coat growing on and around the ears. Using a pair of thinning shears, do a little bulk thinning close to the skin to remove excess coat. Snip a little, then comb and stand back to see where to remove more hair. Once the area is “de-bulked,” use thinners or chunkers to shorten the remaining hair so that it looks natural. You do not want to overly trim or sculpt the coat, just remove areas that are obviously too thick or bunchy so the coat lays smoothly and looks like it grew that way. A well socialized English Shepherd is a delight to groom. They are calm, sensible, intelligent dogs, with a lovely, natural beauty. ✂

Alexis Sanches' Story

Every family is unique. An outsider could flip through the pages of a family’s scrapbook and only imagine the feelings attached to old ticket stubs, pressed flowers, scraps of paper, and photos. For the family that created those memories, every piece gives them the chance to live the memory again.
W
ithin every family, large or small, there are challenges, losses, and heartbreaks, but the amazing thing about families is the way they come together and become stronger than ever even during hard times. “My family, even though we are small, are my inspiration,” says 27–year–old Alexis Sanches, head groomer, and manager at "Wicked Clean Dog," a dog grooming salon and spa in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Sanches has been an animal lover for as long as she can remember, and

even before. “One thing I can say is; mommy or daddy was not my first word. My first word was doggy," says Sanches. “I had a bunch of animals and a large variety growing up.” Before she began learning to groom, Sanches had another dream; she wanted to help people in a meaningful way. “After high school, I planned on following in my grandmother’s footsteps and started school to become a registered nurse,” she explains. “I always dreamt of helping people and becoming a nurse for children.”

In 2010, Sanches lost her grandmother—a devastating and life-changing loss for her and her family. “My whole world had fallen,” says Sanches. With the loss of her grandmother, Sanches had, for a brief period, lost her passion and motivation as well. “She was my best friend, someone who I admired. She was great at listening to me and guiding me in a positive direction.” Sanches knew that her life was going to change. She took time off from school to gain a new perspective and give herself the opportunity to

how rewarding dog grooming was and how you can help an animal and also their owner,” find her passion in life again after such a heartbreaking loss. At the time, Sanches’ mother, Faye, was working a corporate job in a management position. One phone call that Faye made to her daughter would be the change that Sanches needed, and it would be the start of a new journey for the whole family. “My mother who is my anchor called me one day and said, ‘Hey, you love dogs, I love dogs, let’s open a business together and create something great; just you and I grooming some dogs. Become a dog groomer! You only live one life, let’s make the best of it and be closer as a family.’ " Although Sanches knew she needed a change and there was no denying her love for dogs, the idea her mother sprung on her was a surprising one that she had to process. “A dog groomer? What do they do? How am I going to help people by dog grooming?" Sanches asked her mother. “At that time, I didn't know how rewarding dog grooming was and how you can help an animal and also their owner,” explains Sanches. “I love dogs and my life was going to change and change in a positive direction. hours daily to the salon where she was learning to groom, Sanches decided to get a grooming job closer to home. During her time apprenticing and working as a groomer, she learned how to do both show trims and quick and functional pet clips. She enjoyed the work and enjoyed learning. She found her job to be very fast–paced and learned the importance of practicing good time management while grooming. Sanches continued to grow as a groomer and finally, her family would take the next step together. Her mother decided to quit her corporate job and open a dog ‘Spaw’. Sanches would be the head groomer, and her father, Chris, would also be heavily involved in the business. “I couldn't believe I was going to be head groomer. How cool!” I didn't realize how much work I would have to apply into a new shop but what a rewarding feeling every day,” says Sanches. As a family, Sanches and her parents worked hard and their clientele quickly grew. Each one of them had their own important role in the business and by working together, they were able to build on their individual talents to make their business unique. “My father Chris is an extremely talented artist and a computer genius. He creates custom pet portraits for our shop and makes some pretty neat collars. He's very creative," says Sanches. The name of their business is a name that New Englanders can relate to. “Not many people know what the word wicked means but us New Englanders know, it’s a part of our vocabulary.” As for the custom line of collars, they are called ‘Wicked Dog

Collahs’. “If you’re from New England, you know we do not pronounce our ‘ar’ at the end,” explains Sanches. Owning and operating a business with her family might not have been what Sanches was expecting but she immediately found she loved not only grooming, but being a part of a family business. She continues to find inspiration from her family even when faced with challenges. “Sometimes I bite off more than I can chew, but my team always comes together as a team. I couldn’t have asked for a better team over the years. We all contribute something special at Wicked Clean Dog,” she says. Along with grooming, Sanches also has an interest in essential oils. “I like to use essential oils for myself and for the dog that I'm grooming. The oils can help with relaxing the
dog, especially if the dog is scared or has bad anxiety,” Sanches explains. She has her own products called ‘Wicked PAWlistic’. “I make some spritzers for relaxing, some that can help your pet during flea and tick season, a nose and paw softener, and also an ear wash for infected ears.” Sanches is always growing as a groomer and as a business manager. She has plans to continue expanding with both her products and her business. “I believe if you’re passionate about your work, you should expand your mind and incorporate everything you have to offer into your work,” she says. She is also passionate about giving back, and Wicked Clean Dog helps the community by donating to many fundraisers and charities and doing free work for the local shelters.
Learning to groom from the ground up and coming together with her family to create a business has been something truly special for Sanches. Sometimes when life changes directions suddenly, it is the family who really do know best. Sanches has found a career that she enjoys doing and the work that she does makes her clients happy—a part of her dream all along. It is her family who came together and turned one idea into a successful business that will keep growing for many years to come. ✂

et’s be honest. When we see an owner lugging an ultra–heavy carrier into our salons, we know the odds are good that the cat inside is smushed in there like a jelly filled donut. When I think of the voluptuous pampered cat, I’m reminded of the feline in the movie of Cinderella. Do you remember Lucifer lying flat out on his belly as he dips his front paw into his bowl of milk and waits for it to drip into his open mouth? I know the meaning of the movie was symbolic of patience and optimism, along with a great looking slipper, but to me, the cat was hysterical. Working with cats is enjoyable and downright fun and I envision different scenarios with each cat I groom. Maybe I am a bit crazy or I could just have a wicked sense of humor, who knows? But if you need to add a smile and a giggle to your day, I say groom a cat. Think of it this way, when you’re giving an obese cat a lion cut, it’s like shaving a watermelon. What do I mean by that? Well, because the cat is so plump there are few, if any, skin folds and the cat will roll from one side to the other when we need to reach into the armpits and sanitary area. These chunky kitties are also less likely to jump down from our tables and are more willing to accept a bath in our tubs. Easy–peasy. In many cases, these cats will sit in the bath without the attempt of escape which gives us another advantage. It’s quite common for obese cats to have feces stuck on
their rumps and tails. There may also be impacted kitty litter in their pads. If that’s the case, I will make a mini bubble bath by filling up my tub with 4” of warm water and swish it around with cat–safe shampoo. I refer to it as a pre–wash or soak cycle. Let’s face it, fat cats are just easier to groom than the older skeletal cats that lack adequate body mass and elasticity in their skin. In my opinion, overweight cats are a piece of cake (pardon the pun) to groom. Healthy, non–arthritic cats should be able to reach all parts of their bodies while self–grooming. If the cat is physically unable to reach these areas because they're a bit rotund, a change in their diet may be worth looking into. I listen to stories from “I feed my cat ½ cup of dry food a day and that’s it” to “I feed him ½ a can of wet food in the morning and leave dry food out for him while I’m at work.” Unfortunately this is the vision some owners have when they think about proper nutrition; “I’m not feeding them much and they’re still fat.” What they may not understand is the quality of the food and the proper portion size. Yes, there are some cats that chow down like puppies, eating until the food is gone and then look for more. But in many cases, the cat is simply overfed, under exercised and left to his own devices during the day (free feeding). Proper nutrition is the benchmark to good health and we need to help our customers understand that. As professional cat groomers we are on the front line of defense when it comes to being the cat’s voice. It’s not our place to diagnosis obesity, even when it’s blatantly obvious. But

When I have a client come to me seeking help with the “problem areas” on their overweight cat, I explain that the coat’s condition (mats, stuck on feces, etc.) may be caused by the fact their cat is simply unable to reach that area because of their weight. Besides visiting the vet maybe once a year (if that), many of my clients come to me for grooming and advice on all things cat. I’m careful not to be judgmental or accusatory. I try to speak to them on their level of understanding. For example: “Snowball seems to me a bit overweight. I know there are so many different foods available that it
can be confusing to know which ones are more nutritious than others”. In the simplest terms I say something like “Look for cans of food that have the first ingredient as chicken, beef, or other meat proteins”. I also explain that the first ingredients listed are the primary protein sources in the food. In cheaper cat foods, there are more “fillers" that have no nutritional value and are simply used in place of a higher nutritional option. When asked what canned foods to use I recommend the higher end options. I explain to them that, initially the cans will be more costly, but in the long run it will level out to about the same cost. How? Well,
once a cat’s appetite is satisfied with a heartier food they won’t be constantly hungry. The cat will be absorbing the nutrients rather than trying to process fillers through its system. Once the cat adjusts to the new food, he will be eating less, having fewer bowel movements and their urine will have less odor. The cat’s skin and coat will become noticeably more supple and they’re likely to have a pep in their step again. There is an old saying: “The cheapest wet food is better than the most expensive dry”. Which in some cases is true. Think about what feral cats survive on. For this example, let’s assume they eat a healthy mouse or chipmunk. The body

There are numerous reasons for weight gain in cats and overfeeding inadequate food and lack of exercise may be part of the problem, but we must rule out any medical issues before we jump to conclusions. I always recommend and highly suggest that the owner take their cat to their veterinarian when sudden weight loss or weight gain is an issue. Due to the fact that I see most of my clients on a regular schedule, I notice lumps, bumps, scabs, and weight gain during my assessment of the skin and coat. Below is a partial list of medical issues that may have adverse effects on a cat’s metabolism and appetite. This list is not inclusive. Seek veterinary assistance for further information. • Hypothyroidism: This endocrine disease develops when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce adequate amounts of the thyroid hormone. When these hormones are lacking, clinical signs can be weight gain, excessive shedding, general malaise (lethargy), intolerance of cold weather and hair loss. Hypothyroidism is mostly seen in 10+ year old cats, but can affect any age, breed or sex. • Cushing’s Disease: This disease develops when the adrenal glands produce too high a level of glucocorticoids. The cat's metabolism is affected by these glucocorticoids
Your genuine compassion and understanding towards your clients and their pets will further their commitment to you as loyal customers for years to come. Your relationship with the cat is just as important as the relationship with its owner. by causing an increase of appetite. • Medications: Prednisone and Dexamethasone are glucocorticoids. These medications can influence appetite and metabolism. Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines and Valium also affect appetite and metabolism. These medications are frequently used to control Epilepsy. • Brain Diseases & the Pituitary Gland: The pituitary gland regulates the production of hormones from most of the other glands, keeping the amounts at the proper level. However, when the pituitary gland isn’t working properly, hormone levels change which can lead to a change in appetite and metabolism. • Tumors: The pancreas can be affected by an insulinoma tumor. This type of tumor consists of the cells necessary to produce insulin. When a cat has an insulinoma that produces too much insulin, the cat's appetite increases. • Hypothalamus: The hypothalamus in the brain regulates appetite.
When it is not working properly, it can increase the cat's appetite. It should also be noted that a cat's age, physical and social environments can also play a role in its overall health and nutrition. There are numerous reasons for weight gain or loss in cats from improper feeding to disease. Each individual case will be different, but once a clinical review has ruled out serious issues, assisting your clients in feline nutrition, exercise and proper feeding will go a long way ensuring a healthy cat. BEHAVIOR CLIPS
by Gary Wilkes
RUBBING A DOG THE
WRONG
WAY
From my experience, dogs have varying sensitivities to human touch. I say this after almost 40 years of handling between 20 and 30,000 dogs. Some dogs don’t like being petted. Some dogs don’t seek physical affection (I owned one for almost 15 years).
S
ome dogs are highly selective about what kind of rubbing they get. My current Cattle Dog really doesn’t like having his ears rubbed. He’s also sensitive about his tail. Many dogs will allow you to firmly hold a hind paw but are picky about how you hold a forepaw. From a behavior standpoint, this isn’t just about not being able to automatically use physical touch and rubbing as positive reinforcement. Sometimes it bleeds over into how they should be handled at the vet and at your salon. Here’s what first woke me up

to this problem. I was working with a 3 year old Dalmatian that bit his owner in the face—a pretty nasty bite. The scenario was this. They had a camper. The owner and dog were sitting at the table, side– by–side. The owner started gently scratching the dog at the withers. He absentmindedly made this a constant stimulation for about ten minutes. The dog let out a single bark and nailed the owner in the face. I’d never heard of that before. I chalked it up to a unique event and that maybe there was some back–story the owner wasn’t telling me.

About six months later, I was working with a Redbone Hound. Same problem—a single bite to the face. The dog was in all ways normal. The bite appeared to come out of nowhere. Because of the Dalmatian, I started asking questions. This scene unfolded eerily like the other one. The owner was sitting on the couch, watching TV. The dog was sitting right next to him. The owner started gently scratching the dog at the shoulders and absentmindedly kept it up for about ten minutes. The dog let out a single bark and nailed the owner in the face.

To see this common event, just start watching your clients interact with their dogs. If you are talking to them, they rub the dog constantly without conscious thought. Depending on the dog, that may not be a good idea. I have seen similar things many times, though none so puzzling. When I worked in shelters there were dogs that were ‘prickly’ about being handled. In that environment it is impossible to know if their reaction was from some prior event or if they simply didn’t know me well enough. However, these two cases pointed toward a smoking gun. Many humans gain calming sensations from rubbing their dog. If you need confirmation of this, just look at all the costly research studies
over the last 20 years that promote the idea that dogs calm people down. That is the origin of therapy dogs. The problem is that some dogs may not perceive this as pleasant. This also shouldn’t surprise us. Sometimes, we don’t like it either— like when you have the flu and your skin is super-sensitive. “Stop that!” is the normal response when someone simply won’t stop touching you. This is where the phrase, “rubbing a cat the wrong way” comes from. To see this common event,
just start watching your clients interact with their dogs. If you are talking to them, they rub the dog constantly without conscious thought. Depending on the dog, that may not be a good idea. I often have to ask my clients to not continuously pet their dogs merely to get them to pay attention to the lesson. I want physical affection to be rewarding. If the dog gets it constantly, it loses its power. While the tale of my two biters is novel, there is an underlying thought that may benefit you. Some

of the grooming you do takes time. Stripping out a coat may last for an hour or more. It may be difficult to judge just how much fussing a dog will stand. One way to avoid overwhelming a dog is to not focus on one spot for long periods of time. If you are cutting out mats, move from place to place around the dog’s body. If you pull the skin in the same spot over and over, the stimulation may become seriously annoying. Depending on the dog, that could lead to a snap or bite. I discovered my knowledge of this during a personal experience. I once shaved a horribly matted Lhasa at a shelter. Matted and filthy, he had no chance of adoption. It would have been far easier to just put him down, but we gave him a shot at an adoption. It took three people, three hours of work. We didn’t linger long
on any spot because he let us know when he’d had enough. By switching to another location we ‘reset the clock’ and let his nerves calm down. Once we got the mats removed he was very cute – and his whole attitude changed. He didn’t want to bite us anymore. And yes, he got adopted. You may never come in contact with a dog that bites merely because of constant skin stimulation. It’s a rare thing. Knowing that it can happen leads to a simple way to avoid it. Make a habit of moving skin contact from place to place so no single spot gets all the attention for a long period of time. Rubbing a dog the wrong way can lead to problems. Rubbing them in many ways and many places is often the safest practice. ✂

INDUSTRY NEWS APRIL 20-23, 2017
TACOMA, WASHINGTON The Northwest Grooming Show separates itself from other shows in many ways. The groomers that attend are some of the most social and helpful that you will find anywhere. It doesn’t take long to feel comfortable with new groomers that you meet. But, the show might be best known for something that has nothing to do with grooming: The Murano Hotel. The Murano is the most unique grooming
show host hotel. The facility doubles as a glass art museum, with each floor featuring a different artist. “The Northwest Grooming Show has always had strong support from the local groomer, “states Barkleigh Show Planner Rebecca Shipman, “But, the last few years we have seen groomers from all over the country making the trip out to the show. It is definitely a show that every groomer should experience at least once.”

Since its first year, the Northwest Grooming Show had been one of the fastest growing shows in the grooming industry. Almost every year more space has to be added for both vendors and classrooms. That means more vendors, seminars and speakers than ever before to go along with the GroomTeam USA sanctioned breed contests, a Rescue Round-up competition and a creative styling competition.
