One of the joys in my life is the fact that I am still excited to go to work every day. This year will mark the 36th anniversary since I first picked up a clipper.
I
know many in this industry who genuinely enjoy their jobs, so I thought I’d ask why. I posted my question on several active Facebook grooming pages: “What is it that you love about grooming?”, and the answers flooded in…
Many groomers responded that their favorite thing about the job is the constant contact with animals. Catherine Davis worded it this way, “I love the interaction with the animals. Gaining their trust and making them feel as comfortable as possible
during the grooming process. Making their skin feel less itchy. Washing the dirt away. Transforming them so their parents love them up. Dressing them up with something pretty as a finishing touch. Taking their picture. It’s all something I love doing!” Then there are groomers who let their career help fill a craving. Sheryl Woods said, “I’ve always wanted hundreds of cats, which would be so impractical. This way I can be the Cat Grandma who can visit and love them, then leave the litter box and chores to their parents.” For others, grooming is some-

thing more. Suzanne Gann said, “I can wake up in the morning not wanting to face the day, much less work. Then, the moment I have that first dog on the table, all that goes away. It’s my Zen place. My prayer place. My meditation and thinking place.”
HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS From my own experience, the people I have met through grooming have vastly enriched my life. Both pet owners and other groomers have become close, long-time friends. Others echoed this in their response to my question.

Teena Lane Billy expressed, “A pure addiction for dogs is my love for grooming; however, it’s the creation of a fellowship between the owner and I that is so rewarding. Many more times than not, there is a sentimental meld. I fall in love and care for the love of their life. It’s pure gratitude for each of us.” Groomers who work doing house calls or are mobile create especially deep bonds with their customers. Carole Hennenfent knows this firsthand: “Mobile grooming clients become family. I have elderly and handicapped clients time their grocery shopping so they get home as I arrive. I carry their groceries into the house. I have taken their elderly and ill dogs to the vet, two for the last time because they could not do it. We hold them when they cry over pets, family, life. We get invited to their weddings and family functions. I have helped many find

We are part of their families… I never found this to be true as a shop groomer, but going mobile changed my life. I love knowing I make a difference to all my clients, not just for grooming their pets.”
CREATIVITY If a customer really wants to make me grin, they say, “Just do whatever you want,” when they hand me their pet. Being able to sculpt fur to a pleasing design is so rewarding. It came as no surprise that other groomers share my feelings about this. Amber Fielding Harbert said, “I love the new dogs that come in with uncertain owners. They don’t know what they want, or what to expect,

and they’re placing their trust in me to make the right decisions. That squeal of joy when I return their pet to them and the hazy image they had in their head solidified into an adorable cut they love, that is why I still love being a groomer, even on the days I have to remind myself of it.” I also liked reading what Angela Forrester wrote: “I love the creative and technical aspect. I love the fairly immediate gratification. I love that even when I make mistakes, they’re not carried forward forever, there’s always a reset, redo or rework!” Helen Schaefer added, “I love that grooming combines the left and right sides of my brain. I can be business oriented and mathematical (symmetry and angles), but also artistic and unique.” And Leah Shirokoff put it very well

when she wrote, “I love making dogs look cute/lovely/clean and huggable. I would groom some for free if I were wealthy. I put the dog down and thoroughly enjoy seeing how great it looks.”
CHALLENGES I know I would be bored working a desk job, and it seems that many groomers agree with me. We also share a certain joy in overcoming some of the challenges that can go hand in hand with working with another species. Holly Brackley chimed in on this topic: “I really enjoy taking a dirty, sometimes matted, usually overgrown dog and watching them change into a happy, cute, clean doggie. You can see the changes and how much better they feel. It’s so fascinating, satisfying and rewarding.”
And because not all dogs are fans of the grooming process, many of us find joy in showing them how nice it can be. Deanne Olson Morris said, “My favorite is when I get a scared dog in and I earn its trust, so they eventually pull the owners to the door.” Melissa Jepson worded it this way: “Nothing soothes my soul like taking a dog that is introverted or scared and forming a bond where we love and have a deep understanding of each other. The ones that are skittish or labeled weird or reactive. For me to be able to take those dogs as they are and not only love them for it, but build that relationship and earn their trust is like scratching an itch. Deeply satisfying.”
VARIETY, FLEX IBILITY AND INCOME POTENTIAL
moment” atmosphere, and no two days are alike. Another bonus to being a groomer is that people can create ways to work that can be tailored to their chosen lifestyle. Amie Write says, “Honestly, I love grooming because I work part time hours and make full time money. Also, the flexibility of my schedule is a plus. It’s a very satisfying career all in all.” Barb Hoover agreed: “As a career, I love the flexibility in my schedule and the money.” What do we love about grooming? The animals, the people, the variety of our days, the challenges and flexibility. There is much to appreciate when it comes to the world of making pets clean and beautiful. &

more informed about this subject for several reasons. First off, as a professional pet stylist, I believe one should be as informed about important pet–related topics for the simple reason of being a well–rounded pet care professional. If we want to be seen as professionals that should be taken seriously like the many other respected industries in our world, we must elevate our knowledge to be the authorities we know we are in our field. Secondly, being knowledgeable about important topics like canine nutrition helps to create customer loyalty and this is the foundation of a successful business that can stand the test of time. This can also be beneficial to your business if you’re a retailer through sales of high quality pet foods, nutritional treats and nutritional supplements. At some point your clientele will most definitely turn to you for advice about the best foods to feed their pets and this is a great way to steer your clients who may be feeding their dogs a poor quality diet towards a more nutritionally complete and balanced diet that you carry in your business. The benefits of this are greater than you think. Not only can this help to boost sales and add to your bottom line, but if you can get your clients on more nutritionally complete diets and healthy treats, your finished grooms can improve as well. “How would nutrition affect my grooming?” you might ask. Well let’s explore what I mean by that. Often poor quality diets can be the root of skin issues related to allergies or lack of nutrition. We often see dry, inflamed and allergic skin, and all of those can be related to nutrition. Today’s pet foods have many different ingredients that are newer to the pet food industry and the various brands

can be formulated with key ingredients for stage of life, weight management, allergies, performance, specific needs of the breed or simply for more organic and whole nutrition. While this can be very beneficial in selecting the best option for each individual pet, the variety can also have ingredients that some pets are sensitive to or even allergic to. Unfortunately there is no one– size–fits–all pet food or nutritional guideline, so this is where expanded knowledge about the ingredients and nutritional needs of dogs in general can benefit a professional pet groomer. When we see skin issues that arise from food allergies we can guide them to a better dietary option with a different protein as the base or a different formulation of ingredients. Some pet foods are very high in carbohydrates or unhealthy fats, leading to overweight dogs. In some cases,
the lifestyle of the dog through lack of exercise can also lead to weight issues, so understanding the nutritional needs of less active dogs can help you guide the customer to a diet that better suits their needs. Another factor to consider is the life stage of your furry clients. Puppies that get a good start in life on a diet of quality, nutrient–rich ingredients have a better opportunity to grow into healthy and beautiful adults with a well developed coat. The needs of a growing puppy are vastly different than an adult dog so being able to educate your clients about the specific needs of their puppies is beneficial for your clients, but also for the groomer as it helps to again create customer loyalty. Dogs that have already matured and have passed the puppy stage need less fats and often lower proteins. Customers often ask the groomers for advice about when to

switch from puppy to adult food, and adult food to senior formulas, which are beneficial for aging pets and sometimes specific medical issues that accompany aging. The bottom line is, a healthy dog with healthy skin and a good coat is going to look and feel better overall. Helping our clients get their dogs to a healthier weight with a better coat will give us a more balanced and structurally sound dog that will carry a good grooming better and create lasting relationships with our clients that benefit both the customer and you! & Jonathan David is a former GroomTeam USA member with 30 years in the grooming industry. SALON SPOTLIGHT
by Jen Phillips April
Willow’s Groomer Where Customers are Treated Like Family
When Ashley White, a former veterinarian tech and recent university graduate, decided to open a dog grooming salon in her hometown of Ovieda, FL, it was with an eye on providing top–notch customer service.
I 22
thought I was going to be a veterinarian, but I didn’t love school,” says Ashley. She did complete a degree in Animal Science and knew she wanted to work with animals. When her family’s long–term groomer had health problems and sold her salon, Ashley didn’t find another groomer she trusted as well as Shelley. It seemed a natural fit
that when Shelley’s health improved and she wanted to groom part–time, Ashley and her husband Cameron would put their heads together and create a business plan for a grooming salon of their own. “We created a business plan in late December and opened in April,” Ashley says. “Within the first week we’d already exceeded our projec-

tions. We opened across the street from the Ovieda Historical Society. It’s next to a walking trail where a lot of dog owners walk.” When it comes to marketing, Ashley and her team use a combination of real–life events and social media. “The Historical Society hosts a monthly Farmer’s Market and we offer dog–related events at the same
time. We’ll have doggie ice cream, paw print art. We’ll invite people in to have a cup of coffee. We’re able to amplify what this town is all about, which is the community itself.” It seems to be working. Just four months in and they’re booking 50–75 grooms per week. Willow’s Groomer (named after Ashley’s Golden Retriever, Willow) opened on a Saturday in April, coordinated with the monthly Farmer’s Market across the street. They even had the mayor do a ribbon cutting. Skilled at real–life events, their social media presence is excellent, too. “My mom has a Newfie mix, and I thought our bathing tub was big until Luna got in. Then we decided to do a ‘Big Dog Tub Challenge’, a contest to see who has the biggest dog in the area. We’re inviting people to take pictures of their big dogs in the bathing tub and post it on social media. We also have a wall in the salon where we have pictures of the biggest ears, biggest smile, and so on.” The grooming salon is 1,200 square feet with two grooming stations and one big room for kennel space. There’s a separate bathing room and 900 square feet of retail. Ashley says, “Retail is the cherry on top of the sundae. We’ve partnered with other small businesses around the country to sell their pet–related items. Everything is owned and operated in the USA.” She continues, “There’s a local artist who paints pet sayings on wooden planks, we have a seamstress who makes doggie bandanas, we carry candles from a company in Northern Florida, and we have a dog treat making kit called Knead Love. People come in to shop for their grand dogs.” Ashley pays the same care to
choosing her retail goods as to her customers and staff. Shelley, the groomer of 30 years’ experience, brought her former receptionist, Barbara. Then Ashley and her husband hired Jessica, a full–time groomer. With experienced staff in place, Ashley could focus on welcoming their new clients. She and Barbara handle reception. “We don’t sit behind a desk. You’ll find me rolling on the floor with the dogs. We give people a tour of the salon and ask them questions because we want to treat them like family. We ask them how long they’ve lived in Ovieda, or if they’re new, how they like it.” She says they also take pictures and videos of the dogs for their clients which helps put people at ease. “One of our dogs was fear–ag-

They came, met Willow and decided to adopt their own Golden Retriever. “Later, they said their son had been battling depression and, since getting a dog, they’d been able to stop all medications.” Ashley and the staff at Willow’s Groomer have created such a welcoming culture that it’s not unusual to have clients bringing friends and family by just to meet everyone and have a look around. And while her husband works a full–time project manager job, he also helps with marketing and business plans. When asked what’s next for Willow’s Groomer now that they’ve seen such growth in just a few months, Ashley mentioned the future events they’re planning including ‘speed dating with your dog’ around Valentine’s Day, where dog lovers can meet other dog lovers and see if they’re compatible. She’s also interested in growing their family of groomers. Ashley concludes, “No matter what, we want to treat everyone like part of the family.” &

ecause of the permeability of the skin and the nature of its building blocks, we can nourish the skin, and in some circumstances, the body, by offering minerals, micronutrients and proteins topically. When a pet is experiencing a crisis or condition, such as metabolic disease, a long run of antibiotics, whelping or any other of a myriad of issues, it is very easy for the body to become depleted of these essential ingredients for skin and cellular health. Among other things, the skin is made of many different kinds of proteins and amino acids that form the cell structure (keratin), glue them together (desmosomes), and other kinds of connective tissues (hemidesmosomes), lipids and mineral combinations. Many times, the body will pull “free” proteins and other ingredients meant for skin into the body

to help heal the crisis which leaves the skin depleted and starved. While internal nutrition and supplementation is very important, especially when the pet is experiencing disease, it is possible to topically feed the skin in order to improve the barrier functions, but it is also feasible to help ease the burden of the body by providing precious raw materials to the skin. B vitamins, like biotin and B12, vitamin C, fat-soluble vitamins like A, E and K, minerals like zinc, iron, copper, magnesium and, of course, proteins and fatty acids, are just some of the raw materials that the skin uses to create more cells, regulate growth, and create the mantle of lipids that cover the skin and hair. We, as groomers, have so many choices available to nourish depleted skin these days, thanks to available research information, technologically advanced formulations, GroomertoGroomer.com
and plain and simple raw materials that can be used as additives in masks, shampoos, conditioners and sprays. It is always important to make sure that your clients understand the vital presence of current veterinary care baseline bloodwork, and that topical spa treatments are not intended to replace medications or other treatments that are recommended by the veterinarian. Some of the things you should consider keeping on hand are protein-based cleanser, avocado oil, olive oil, fulvic minerals, Himalayan sea salt, epsom salt, green tea powder or leaf, marine collagen, seaweed powder, kelp powder and a variety of cosmetic clays. Many of these ingredients can be found in commercial preparations, shampoo and conditioner formulas, and sprays of all kinds. These ingredients can be added to masks, shampoos, conditioners, sprays

and creams, depending on the needs of the pet and the choice of application for you, and possibly, the owner of the pet. Clay masks can detoxify, but the skin may only need to be nourished with oils and minerals. Detoxification is best when there is something embedded in the skin, for example, infection, rashes, scale and crusts all benefit from the application of clay. There are times when none of these things are present, yet the skin remains dry and the hair is brittle. This is a good indicator that a hydrating mask is needed. A hydrating mask starts with a conditioner to which minerals and oils are added. This can be a first step in giving the skin and hair some elasticity before washing. This same formula can be used as a mask after the cleansing portion of the bath. Wrapping the pet in a warm towel while soaking keeps heat and moisture in so that the deepest penetration of the mask is achieved. Understanding the needs of the skin and a little bit of knowledge of the ingredients can help your pet friends achieve a greater level of health and comfort. & References:

BECOMING A GROOMING CAREGIVER TO THE
“
Hi Michell. I have had many calls lately for dogs that are old and struggling with grooming. I feel like I have the patience to work with them and someone needs to take care of them. But I am terrified that a senior dog will pass away in my shop. I feel bad turning them away but they take so

much time and they are exhausting.
H
i Laura. When it comes to senior pets there are many things to consider. First of all, when a dog is young and fit, he/she can help with grooming. Unlike humans, a dog can stand and move well enough to be groomed by the time they are just few months old. Teaching a puppy or dog that is new to your clientele is basically like teaching them to perform a series of tricks, kind of like agility. Some dogs are so well trained to perform

their grooming tricks that they will offer the paw that they know you will reach for next. As they age, they can show weaknesses in their body and their mind. Some may become almost entirely incapable in their bodies, while others may become completely unaware of their surroundings—and some will suffer from both. They are no longer capable of being helpful with their body and/or they are unpredictable in their actions. At this point you

are no longer just their groomer or stylist, but you are now a grooming caregiver. Before, they could do their part, now they need you to do your part and help them do theirs. It takes a whole different kind of skill to work with these dogs. It is actually more like cat grooming. The best–case scenario is when a pet is in the care of one groomer throughout its entire life. It can be easier to work with a pet that is suffering from dementia, pain or disease
Consider having clients sign a release form. This is a simple agreement that states if the pet should injure itself or others or expire while in your care, you are not liable.

if you can remember how they used to be. If they were always a stinker about having their nails done, for example, then you know it is more likely that they are fussing about having their nails done than because of pain or weakness. But if you do not know the dog and they fuss for having their nails done, you have no idea if they are actually in pain or if they were always a stinker for having their nails done. It is safe to assume that all dogs over the age of seven have some aches and pains; after the age of ten for sure and after fifteen it is an absolute certainty. When someone with a senior pet inquires about becoming a client, one of the first questions you should ask is, “Why are choosing to change groomers?” You are asking this question because you are fishing for information about why they would choose to move a senior pet to a new grooming caregiver. Typically, by the second half of a pet’s life, the owner will have settled on a stylist. There are countless reasons why they may be looking for someone new that have nothing to do with the dog. For example, their groomer has retired, they recently acquired the dog or they just moved to the area. But if the reason is that the current stylist has told them that the dog has become too difficult in its final years, this is a red flag. If you choose the very difficult job of becoming a grooming caregiver for a senior or disabled pet, consider having clients sign a release form. This is a simple agreement that states if the pet should injure itself or others or expire while in your care, you are not liable. In most states the laws protect groomers from having to pay huge amounts of money for these types of disasters, but it never hurts to convey the risks to the
34
client and protect yourself in the form of a signed agreement. Consider having the owners of your most elderly and/or disabled pets wait in the lobby or stay local and be on–call when you work with their pet. You might also want to have them help. There are, indeed, situations in which the owner can be more of a help than a hindrance, and they are also witnessing the whole thing so there is no mistaking the difficulties you and the pet face. Try to book these pets at a time when you have few distractions, where you can get them done as quickly and comfortably as possible, and when you have support staff in case you need help. These services can be intense so schedule a small break afterward to recuperate. Never allow the owners to leave the pet with you for much longer than the
service actually takes. This will decrease the odds of the pet passing away in your care. Unless of course, you are also providing daycare and boarding services. If you are concerned about taking these pets due to overall health, consider asking them to obtain a health certificate from their vet within ten days prior to their first grooming with you. Airlines do this for a reason. At the very least, a conversation with the owner about the overall health of the dog is important. The unexpected consequence of this may be that the local vets get to know you as the senior dog groomer. Eek. The upside to providing excellent care to senior pets is that there is a good chance that the owners will get another dog when this one passes and they will likely choose you as the stylist for their new pet. Modifying the style and/or groom-

ing schedule to accommodate the pet’s needs can be helpful. A shorter style that lasts longer, an altogether different style or a more frequent schedule may be required as conditions for you to be their grooming caregiver. There may be a point at which these decisions change from being what the owner wants to what is best for the dog and the grooming caregiver. Be sure to charge appropriately for being their pet’s grooming caregiver. In most cases, these pets will take at least half an hour longer and then you need a few minutes to regroup afterward. This should all be at the expense of the owner. Consider having a higher rate for pets that need more than a groomer or stylist, but who actually need a grooming caregiver. Good luck and enjoy taking care of the oldies but goodies! &

n the past few years, pet stylists have become more informed than ever before when it comes to pay, income, pay types and wages. Topics such as employment status, workplace rights, benefits and even succession planning have crept into education platforms; groomers are paying attention to the business aspects of pet styling on new levels. Beyond pricing, service structures and add–on’s, there is a new brand of discussion emerging which centers around establishing personal value to your skill set and ensuring that you, the pet stylist, are earning wages which are fair, sustainable and reflect the value you offer pet owners. That’s a fancy way of saying: Are you making enough to sustain yourself in a changing world? Are

To understand the importance of this issue, let’s take a look at Mary. Mary is a groomer in a small town in the Mid–West. She has groomed since

Mary is now approaching the end of her career, and she hopes to eek out another couple

of years grooming. In keeping with federal guidelines, her employer recently changed her employment status from Independent Contractor to Employee. Heralding all the wonderful protections she would now receive, such as Workers Compensation, Mary accepted the changes because she has no other choice. Through the past two decades, she has filed sporadic tax returns, using the money she earned to support herself and her son. Now, she is bringing home fewer dollars, and although her independent tax burden is relieved, she is finding it difficult to manage the “pay cut” in her bring–home pay. Do you know a groomer like Mary? Are you Mary? As groomers like Mary learn to navigate new workplace guidelines, and grooming business owners/operators learn to navigate new financial parameters to keep their business profitable and sustainable, everyone should keep their focus on a few important numbers. Perhaps one of the most important pieces to know and understand is “Living Wage”. These numbers can serve as a roadmap to ensuring that you, your employees, your employer and the entire industry are indeed thriving and managing changing financial climates successfully.
WHAT IS “ LIVING WAGE” AND WHY DOES IT MATTER TO YOU? This is where it gets a little tricky. There is a different Living Wage established for every single county in every single state in the United States. You can research the Living Wage in your state here: https://livingwage.mit.edu/ By entering your location, you can learn what is considered to be the wage YOU should be earning in order to maintain a normal standard of living. This is also sometimes called a “Cost of Living” wage and differs dramatically from a minimum wage. A minimum wage is the lowest wage permitted by

stable, long–term employees. It’s not as simple as determining to pay your staff more—you must ensure that your pricing structures support Living Wages and the long–term financial health of your employees. The key to understanding Living Wages lies in understanding how to utilize them to create long–term, stable work environments. Besides investing in education, tools and equipment, it’s important to invest in ensuring that your staff can return to your grooming shop, day after day, knowing that they can afford to live on the wages they earn. (Now, personal budgeting is a whole different subject. Ask Mary, she also learned
this lesson after many decades of being a groomer.) Your clients will benefit by having experienced, regular staff members taking care of their pets over the course of time, and in turn see the value in your grooming establishment and services. Advertising that you support Living Wages for all staff members is a great way to help your clients understand your pricing structure as well. If the Living Wage in your area is $14/hour, and the minimum wage is your area is $8/hour, can you attract new talent, hourly staff and support entry–level positions when you are hiring at $9/hour? By
finding a way to hire and establish the financial footing for pet service employees to earn Living Wages, you are helping pave the way to a new wave of talent to enter the field and establish careers. By ensuring that your existing wages measure up—which will mean taking a hard look at your pricing, overhead, and every financial aspect inside the grooming shop—there will be room to stabilize and create a sustainable financial future for all. So, the next time you contemplate the prices you charge and your paycheck, let the Living Wage for your area be an index to begin the journey. &

ENCOURAGING OWNERS TO MAKE
Wise Diet
Choices
FOR THEIR CATS
When I was a child, I used to hear it all the time, “you are what you eat”. While I don’t hear that saying so often anymore, it is true. Our human bodies respond to the nourishment we put into them. Yet many have not made the connection that the same is true for their pets.

hat owners put into their cat’s body is going to either positively or negatively affect the biological functioning of their cat. As groomers, we know that diet affects coat, nails and waste of our clients’ cats. If we can help owners understand this principal, we will not only improve the overall wellbeing of their pet cat, but also improve the relationship the cat has with its owners. When trying to help clients
understand how diet affects a cat, a great place to start is with waste. Litter box use and other litter box issues are the top annoyance of many cat owners. By helping owners understand a high quality food will produce more consistent stools with less odor, we can get and keep their attention. Then we can use this momentum to educate the owner on the importance of a good feline diet. When we get a cat in for grooming and there is fecal matter on the

coat, this usually is a great stepping stone for discussing diet and nutrition. Many owners have not made the connection that when a cat has loose or smelly stools, diet can be the cause. At check in, if a cat has a crispy booty, I usually ask if there has been a recent diet change. If the owner looks at me with confusion, I follow up by asking what food they feed their cat. I take this approach because many cat owners are not aware that
a change in food should be done slowly over a period of time. Often, as a groomer, I am able to establish that the reason for loose stools in a cat was a quick change in diet. Without this knowledge, many times owners will buy the cat food that is on sale this week without realizing the delicate digestive system of a cat may not tolerate switching from one brand to another. After I ask about what food they are feeding their cat, I am easily able to ask about litter box habits. I usually jump right in and ask if the fecal matter is well formed or soft then continue with how bad does it smell. Most owners are shocked to learn that a higher quality food can make the cat’s bowl movements more consistent and less stinky. It is important to talk to the cat owner at this point to stress the importance of picking one brand of food and committing to it for an extended period. The owner also needs to be instructed on how to properly transition their cat from the current brand of cat food to the new brand of cat food. The major cat food brands have directions on how to transition a cat’s diet on their websites. Another thing you may not think to ask about are the treats and snacks that are given to the cat. Treats and snacks can sabotage the best of us humans; they have the same effect on cats. Often times we do not think to include treats and snacks into our calorie count or think of them when our human diet is not working the way we expected. The same is true for the cat owner. When looking for ways to improve how the feline body is functioning, we need to look at everything that is ingested. A cat can

It is important to specifically ask about treats and snacks when attempting to help your clients make a positive change. After you have had the discussion on how to make your client’s home life better with less stink and better formed fecal matter, you can then jump in with the benefits that a high quality diet will have on coat, skin and nails! what is the most concerning to us as groomers? When attempting to help cats by changing the owner’s behavior, I have found this to be the best strategy. I start with what bothers the owner, then explain how it will also benefit their cat’s grooming needs. While most clients will not pay more for better food because of skin or coat issues, the hopes of a better smelling litter box will usually convince them to give a better diet a try. Cats on a lower quality diet tend to be greasier and have more dandruff than cats on a higher quality

diet. This obviously leads to matting, which requires more professional grooming. Unfortunately, many owners do not address the matting and it results in discomfort and lack of mobility for the feline. When we can get owners to use a higher quality food, conditions such as grease build-up, dandruff and matting will improve. Everyone from the cat to the owners to the groomer benefits when the feline is on a better quality diet. This will not only improve the biological functioning of the cat, but also improve the cat’s relationship with the owners. &

BUILDING ON NEW HORIZONS This past year has been marked with the development of a special relationship between groomers and the American Kennel Club’s Government Relations team (AKC GR). Legislation regulating or impacting groomers and pet health and safety was introduced in a number of states, including New York, New Jersey and New Hampshire.
A

KC GR was proud to partner with groomers and advocates across the country who stepped into the trenches to ensure that regulation focuses on pet health and safety, and recognizes and respects the expertise of grooming industry professionals. Working together, we learned that grassroots advocacy works! Lawmakers increasingly tell us they only want to hear from those who will be directly impacted by the proposals they are considering. At Groom Expo this past September in Hershey, Pennsylvania, AKC staff met some extraordinary groomers who are eager to get involved.
We’re excited about synergies that are growing from the personal contacts, messages and phone calls we’re getting from groomers across the country who are getting politically active to protect and grow their business and the reputation of their profession. As we prepare for the year ahead of us, let’s take a look back at key issues we encountered in 2019 that impact groomers and pet ownership— and are likely to do so again in 2020.

STATE AND LOCAL 2019 TRENDS AND KEY ISSUES In 2019, AKC tracked more than 2,2001 bills that impact dog ownership on the state, county and municipal
levels. Animal issues can be among the most controversial and emotion–packed measures that legislators encounter. This is especially true if a new regulatory proposal is introduced following a well–publicized tragedy such as the death of a pet in a shop, a dramatic cruelty/negligence issue or a vicious dog bite. Major canine legislation issues in 2019 included: cruelty, breeder and retail pet regulations, service animals, groomer bills, veterinary/ health, animal control policy, and tethering/temperature bills. While it’s common to focus on groomer– regulation measures, keep in mind that there are also many other types
At the state level, the most common issue addressed in 2019 by AKC GR was animal cruelty. The AKC recorded

At the state level, the most common issue addressed in 2019 by AKC GR was animal cruelty. The AKC recorded 336 cruelty related bills on the state level alone. In 2018, this number was at 235. These bills cover a broad range of topics including licensing, tethering, animal control and ownership requirements. Some of these measures increase penalties or make

changes most grooming professionals are unaware of. For example, several years ago, South Carolina banned coloring or dying of animals and considers it animal cruelty2. Other examples of cruelty proposals include regulations on tethering and kennel sizes. Athens, Alabama, for example, amended their animal ordinance in 2019 to set new parameters on kennel enclosures for dogs3. An enclosure for a dog weighing under 30 pounds must be at least 100 square
GroomertoGroomer.com
feet, while an enclosure for a dog weighing over 30 pounds must be at least 225 square feet. This could potentially make it illegal to put your dog in a crate! For comparison, the average square footage of a rental apartment in Seattle, Washington is 711 square feet. Again, this well–intentioned but misguided proposal aimed at preventing animal cruelty could cause greater harm to pets and have real implications on your business. AKC monitored 25 state tether-
ing bills in 2019, a 20% increase over 2018. Tethering bills are commonly intended to combat the stereotypical “pit bull on a chain” imagery; however, these bills are often written so broadly that they ban the use of a grooming loop on a grooming table. A proposed ordinance in Hattiesburg, Mississippi would have required a dog “tether” attached to a stationary object to be at least 10 feet in length. In this ordinance, the definition of “tether” did not distinguish between tethers used outdoors and tethers used indoors4. As a result, use of grooming loops, tethering for training or veterinary restraints could have been criminalized. Fortunately, the AKC and local dog owners and professionals got involved and educated local lawmakers about unintended consequences, and the city agreed to clarify the ordinance so it would not impact grooming
businesses. This was a great example of residents and experts getting involved and making real change. AKC GR is currently monitoring more than 20 state grooming regulation/licensing and related proposals across the country from New Hampshire to California. Proposals cover a variety of subjects that could impact your business, including your ability to hire contract employees, defining a commercial kennel to include a grooming salon, and state–wide registration and regulation of pet groomers. In some cases, these measures have been introduced with little or no consultation with groomer industry experts. New Hampshire HB 3765 would establish a commission to study best practices for companion animal groomers. However, as filed, the bill does not include a commission seat for any professional dog groomer association
or individual expert. [AKC has asked that a representative of a professional grooming organization with nationally–recognized expertise be added to the commission]. AKC believes groomers in the state should be outraged that there may be a commission responsible for creating groomer regulations in which grooming experts would have no input. If you live in New Hampshire and did not know about this bill, it’s time to start getting involved!
LOOKING AHEAD Animal issues continue to be important to state and local lawmakers. A wide range of proposals to license or regulate professional groomers will likely continue to be introduced in 2020. Ongoing vigilance, education and communication by knowledgeable groomers are more important than ever to ensure that new laws recognize the expertise of grooming professionals, and are fair, non–discriminatory, and in the best interest of dogs and their owners. As always, reach out to AKC Government Relations at (919) 816–3720 or doglaw@akc.org if you hear of an issue in your state or community. We look forward to continuing to work with you to protect our beloved dogs and those who care for dogs. & References 1 Policy numbers in this story are current as of October 2019 2 https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/ t47c001.php 3 https://www.athensalabama. us/DocumentCenter/View/1248/ Overview-of-proposed-animal-ordinance-changes?bidId= 4 http://www.hattiesburgms.com/wp-content/uploads/DRAFT3_AnimalControlOrdinance_Sept2019.pdf 5 http://gencourt.state.nh.us/ bill_status/bill_status.aspx?lsr=259&sy=2019&sortoption=&txtsessionyear=2019&txtbillnumber=HB376

n my 32 years of practice, there was one trending concern among my clients that was frequently communicated. This concern, expressed in many ways, almost always translated to this bold statement: “My dog is getting fat and I can’t understand why, because he is a picky eater. Now, to most people, this problem of obesity correlates directly to overfeeding; however, there are several other causes that factor in. Can we, as humans, all rely on the same diet to maintain our healthiest body weight, regardless of lifestyle, activity level, age, etc.? The answer is no. So why would we think otherwise with our dogs? Many clients would state that they feed their dogs two cups of food a day, not understanding the reason for weight gain. Rather than make a blanket statement that two cups is right for your dog, I would prompt a conversation asking about the lifestyle, age and activity level of the dog. Also, what type of food are you providing for your dog? There are various factors that come into play when determining the cause of the weight gain in our canine companions. To feed a dog correctly, one should calculate the kilocalories that your individual dog should eat (including snacks) and then adjust it accordingly for activity. My benchmark statement is, “you should take what the directions state on the bag and drop it by 10%, then adjust in accordance to how the dog does. Many of the recommendations on the bag are excessive. Dog food manufacturers have done an acceptable approximation of food needed for the weight of the dog; however, they are also in the business to sell dog food, therefore, in my opinion, many of them continue on the lofty end of the scale on their suggestions. Many dog owners choose to freefeed their dogs and they will successfully thrive on the method; however, most
Another common error is providing several different dog foods so the dog doesn’t get “bored”. Boredom is more of a human concern (and sometimes a cat one) more so than a dog issue. of us are not that lucky. Some dogs naturally regulate their body weight and food intake, but many do not know when to stop eating. A substantial issue is human interference. A statement that I received from a client of a grossly obese dog was that his dog was such a picky eater that he had to add canned food to his diet to encourage him to eat (hmm?). Top dressing (adding canned food or goodies) is a common tool many owners do to “love” their dog into obesity.
Another common error is providing several different dog foods so the dog doesn’t get “bored”. Boredom is more of a human concern (and sometimes a cat one) more so than a dog issue. If consistency is maintained, then we will see a reduced issue with obesity, because dogs would eat out of need, not out of want. The further you vary their diet, the more they will crave variation—ultimately leading to progressive weight gain. Variation can also be detrimental if
you have a dog with food allergies, because the more proteins the dog is exposed to, the greater the chance of an allergy development. Several clients believe that, in order to benefit from the lack of nutrition in certain foods, it is necessary to supplement with alternate foods. This common error by assumption can be avoided by feeding your dog a high quality food from the start. In the modern era, most of our diets are nutritionally sound—at least on paper.

The substantial issue is the bioavailability. In the past, many of the diets were animal tested (as listed on the AAFCO statement); however, because of the increased costs of animal testing, a majority have fallen back into the formulated category (as listed on AAFCO statement). This means that the diet meets the qualifications (nutritionally) based on a computer model, but crucially no guarantee that it does in reality (bioavailable). Alternating diet to solve this issue is most definitely not the answer because there is no way of truly balancing the diet in correlation to the deficiency—unless you can pinpoint the exact insufficiency. Another area many consumers are not aware of is how things are listed on the AAFCO (American Feed Control Officials) statement, which has led to
confusion. The AAFCO statement is on every bag of food and is important to be aware of and educated on. The three main categories from the AAFCO statement (in addition to animal tested and formulated) are the life stages in which the food is designed for. The two categories of the past were adults (not senior), puppies and pregnant bitches. Recently, another stage has been added which is for ALL LIFE STAGES. In order to get this classification with AAFCO, these diets must meet the most stringent criteria, which is the nutritional benefits needed for puppies and pregnant bitches (why not just say that?). So unbeknownst to many consumers, they are feeding their older dog food that is geared towards puppies, thus adding to the obesity issues. The most consistent issue I found

in my years of practice was not the food, but the habitual supplementation of treats within the diet. For years, one influential manufacturer convinced us that by providing their treats to our dogs, we could keep their teeth squeaky clean. Great marketing, but no scientific evidence to back up the claim. Unfortunately, the consumers fell into this propaganda trap and the treats were labeled as beneficial. This of course led to the assumption that, if one treat was beneficial, then additional treats would be even more effective. This translated to every member of the family giving Fido an unnecessary number of treats and now, unknowingly, the dog was provided with significantly more than its recommended daily calorie requirement. Helping our canine companions maintain a healthy weight is very important for their longevity. Many small dogs die from the secondary effects of obesity, which almost always manifest into heart and lung issues. Numerous, if not a majority of, large dogs are euthanized due to arthritis causing back and hip issues, which are exacerbated by obesity. We need to love our dogs to the absolute fullest, but with praise and quality time, not with food. & Dr. Cliff Faver graduated with a BS in Biology/BA in Chemistry before getting a Veterinary degree in 1987. sian Style grooms are very popular in the grooming salon. For me, I love to use this style on dogs that come in matted or their owners want a cute little personality trim that is low maintenance. The great thing about Asian styles is that they are flexible and there is no real “wrong” way to do it, as long as you follow a few simple guidelines. Typically, most Asian Styles don’t follow breed standard trims and they have short bodies with longer

legs. There are a multitude of styles to choose from on the face and head but the majority of them have short chins. This style gives groomers the ability to be artistically expressive! On this particular dog, a 4 lb. Toy Poodle with a lot of attitude, his owners wanted something that was easy to maintain but helped him to express his big personality. These trims are also fun because you can add a little pet-friendly color and glitter. Fig 1) I am using a #4 clipper comb attachment on cordless trim-

Fig 24) Using pet–safe hairspray, lightly put the "fan" into place. Fig) 25 Once the fan was in place, I used curved shears to clean up the lines. Remember, Asian styles are very neat and refined. So feel free to go back over to put a nice scissor finish on everything. To give this guy a little extra sass, I added some glitter—so now he's really ready to strut his stuff! &
