GROOMING

MATTERS by Daryl Conner

THE ART OF SETTING

EXPECTATIONS

S

ometimes a customer is unhappy with your grooming. In my experience, a huge percentage of the time this is due to the pet owner having an expectation of what the end result of the groom is going to look like, which is different from what the experienced groomer knows the pet will look like. HERE IS AN EXAMPLE A customer comes in with a 9 month old Shih Tzu puppy for its first

6

groom. The dog has not been brushed or combed since birth and is encased in some very impressive matts and tangles. The owner brandishes a photo of a Shih Tzu, in long flowing coat, with the hair on its head tied up in a sweet, neat, little blue bow. “I want him to look like this,” she says. Now, let’s see this groom through its natural conclusion, with two different scenarios. SCENARIO #1 The groomer says, “Oh, well, he’s

GroomertoGroomer.com

kind of matted, I can’t make him look quite like that. He’s going to be shorter than that.” In her mind she is envisioning how the dog is going to look when she peels that coat off with a 7f blade. “I don’t want him too short,” the owner says. The groomer, wanting to avoid an unpleasant confrontation says, “I’ll do the best I can.” The owner goes happily tripping out the door, picturing her puppy looking just like the dog in the picture she left, right down

to that cunning little bow. All day long she gleefully looks forward to picking up her puppy, clean and pretty, and showing him off to her family and friends. At the designated pick up time, she flounces into grooming shop, all smiles. But the smile fades fast when she is presented with a wiggly, smooth coated dog, without enough hair for even that bow! This is where the fireworks start. And the storm doesn’t just stay in the grooming shop; it splashes out over the internet. The echoes of her displeasure are far flung, reaching hundreds, maybe even thousands of people. People who might have been potential clients, but they have now heard one unhappy person’s very negative thoughts about this grooming business. It is all very unfair and one sided. It’s also very preventable.

SCENARIO #2 The groomer takes the customer and her puppy to the grooming area and explains a bit about the process. “In order for me to leave your dog’s coat long like in the picture, I will need to be able to get a comb from his skin to the tips of the hair.” Placing the puppy on the table, and showing the owner the comb in question, the groomer demonstrates the severity of the tangles in the pet’s coat. She hands the owner a comb and lets her try it out. The dog will no doubt register displeasure with the process, since this is all new to him. “Unfortunately his coat is too tangled to have him look the way you want him to this time. It would be painful for him to try to brush and comb these matts out. So today I will be clipping him very close, and when you pick him up, his coat will be short

and smooth.” The groomer is educating the customer, and then, she adds a bonus an option. People like options. “After today we can get him on a regular schedule, and I’ll show you how to maintain his coat at home between grooming, as well. Then we can grow his hair out to look just the way you desire.” To really make sure the customer has the idea, the groomer shows her a few pictures of Shih Tzu that have been clipped close. The customer may not been too happy, but she is able to anticipate what her puppy will look like upon pick up, and she leaves the groomer with a clear understanding of what to expect. When she picks her dog up she can appreciate how clean and sweet and cute he is, despite her disappointment, because she expected the results she received.

EDUCATE As professional groomers we know exactly what the grooming process entails, and we have a pretty good idea what each pet will look like in the end, based on our experience. It is totally unfair of us to assume that the general pet owning public understands our work. Think about it this way; most groomers have no idea what goes into the process of replacing the brakes on our car, or preparing the evening’s food in a busy restaurant. Our Shih Tzu owning customer might be an excellent auto mechanic or fabulous chef, but we cannot expect them to know the ins and outs of grooming. It is our job to educate them, kindly, just as we would hope someone would educate us about skills we are unfamiliar with. To prevent unhappy customers, make sure that you: • Listen carefully to what the customer is saying they desire. • Repeat what you heard them say back to them so you are sure you understood. • If you cannot give them what they are hoping for, set clear expectations on what their pet

will look like when the groom is completed. Keep photos on hand to show them examples of groomed pets that look similar to their breed. • Take time to offer education to the customer so that they will understand a little more about how and why their pet will receive the grooming you anticipate you will be providing. The time you invest in this education will help build your relationship with the customer in a positive way. STICKER SHOCK It is not just the appearance of the pet that can cause an unpleasant surprise. Sticker shock at pick up time can cause people to become very upset, as well. If they are expecting to pay your small dog groom price, and are hit unexpectedly with an additional $60 de-matting charge, things can go badly, fast! Here is an example about setting pricing expectations: A new customer recently brought me an Australian terrier to groom. The dog is a retired

champion, and he wanted it groomed to breed standard. He complained that the previous groomer had charged too much. That stopped me in my tracks. “If you want your dog groomed to look like the champion he is, that requires hand stripping. That is a time consuming skill and must be charged for accordingly.” The man nodded his head, “I know, but it gets expensive.” I offered an option, “How about this; you give me a budget and I will hand strip some coat to preserve some of the color and texture. Then I will use clippers and scissors to create the proper outline, but not go over your budget.” His eyes lit up. He gave me a generous budget to work with, and was very happy with the end result. He knew exactly how much I was going to charge before he left his pet with me, and I knew just how much time to invest. It was a win/win situation that left us both happy. Being clear in your communications can be tricky, challenging, and downright scary sometimes, but is a corner stone to building happy clientele that not only come back on a regular basis, but also sing your praises to their friends. ✂

HIGH-END BRUSHES AND COMBS

ARE THEY REALLY WORTH THE EXPENSE? E by Kathy Hosler e

O

h, how times have changed in the pet care industry – and every groomer can be very thankful that they have. Not so long ago, groomers had a very limited selection when it came to choosing the combs and brushes that help them perform their jobs. Today, groomers have a vast array of grooming tools at their disposal – from the really inexpensive to the elite custom-made, personalized ones. And, many of the combs and brushes have been designed to perform specific duties/functions that will enable the groomer to save time, turn out better finish grooms, and lessen the wear and tear on the their bodies. High-end combs and brushes have made life easier for today’s stylists and for the pets they groom. If you are not

12

yet using them, listen to what other groomers have discovered…. “Like everyone, I started with the Frank’s Universal Slickers,” says Master Groomer, Linda Trader. “Then, I discovered the Tuffer Than Tangles. It was a big improvement, but I still replaced them monthly. And, I advised my customers to replace them as often as you would your toothbrush.” Linda and many other groomers realized that they were really not saving money when they bought inexpensive brushes, because they had to replace them so frequently. Linda decided to upgrade to a premium brush, and she found out that in addition to lasting a long time, the brush had many other benefits. “I am in love with the Chris Christensen Big Black Brush! I use it

for ninety-nine percent of what I do,” exclaims Linda. “It is comfortable in my hand and gentle on the dogs. It dematts with less damage to the coat and skin. The dogs come back in for their next groom with fewer mats because of less damage. And, the owners are amazed that the dog they can’t brush at home, tolerates this brush without protest.” Groomers are finding that upscale brushes are a smart investment – not just a pricey purchase. “Last year we invested in the Big K Slicker, and immediately fell in love with it” says Linda Rumler of Pet Craze Grooming. “They save so much time and can get through the nappiest of coats - and it pulls curls out of Poodles like you would not believe. We definitely see a better finish on the dogs.

Those crazy, thick coats on the Doodles are no match for it.” What makes these high-end brushes and combs better than the everyday equipment that is available? “The way the brushes and combs are designed, how they are constructed, and the materials that are used in the production, make all the difference in the finished tool,” says Ruthi Ashley-Stern, owner of Ashley Craig. “All of our brushes are ergonomically designed. For example, the longer handles are made to be used comfortably by men and women alike. There is no ‘divot’ for the thumb, so you can place your thumb wherever it is the most comfortable for you. They have a special epoxy finish that reduces friction and helps them stay cool in your hand.” “Quality components make all the difference in the finished product

when it comes to grooming tools,” says Ron Weinstein, owner of Bass Brushes and Combs. “For instance, there are many different grades of Boar bristle. You can buy a Boar bristle brush and it may have only ten percent Boar bristle and ninety percent nylon. We use one hundred percent Wild Boar bristle in ours. That makes all the difference in how it distributes the natural oils throughout the dry coat. And, we are always looking for ways to make the groomer’s life easier and more productive. We have just come out with the wet/dry Bathing Brush by Bass. It can be used in the tub and also when drying the pet.” Carol Harvey of Puppy Bubbles tells how she graduated to using highend brushes. “I used Franks Universal brushes for over a decade before I heard about Les Poochs brushes,” says Carol. “I

swore that there was no way a brush could be so much better as to warrant the cost to be twenty-five times higher. Then I was at a trade show that was having a silent auction, and a Les Poochs brush was one of the items. It was for a good cause, so I bid on it – and won!” “I have to admit that I was completely shocked at the difference in the brushes,” Carol says. She continues, “Coats brushed out much easier and the dogs didn’t seem to mind the brushing. And, when I compared the two on my own arm – OMG - I felt so bad for ever using the Universal brush.” “There is a big difference between inexpensive brushes and those that are top of the line,” shares Michel Raviol, owner of Les Poochs. “The Brush industry has come a long way in the last fifteen years,” Michel continues, “Quality lasts; the

groomers may invest more money, but their reward is time saved and reduced wear and tear on their bodies. And, quality made brushes give the dog or cat a comfortable experience. We manufacture and assemble our brushes here in the USA with high quality materials and under our direct Quality Control Standards. This assures us an outstanding and durable finished product. Furthermore, our brushes cater to breed or coat specificity – that helps the pet in its comfort level” Brushes that perform specialized jobs are fast becoming indispensable additions to every groomer’s tool kit. “Our brushes come in single and double wide sizes, and also the duo which is two brushes in one. Each of our brushes is designed for a specific purpose – from de-matting to finishing. We have a brush called the Coatgrabber,” says Chuck Simons of ActiVet. “It is constructed so that the

tines are longer and the hooks are shorter. This allows the brush to get past the topcoat and down into the undercoat. It removes undercoat in half the time by using a ‘tap and pull’ brushing method. And, because the brush has a flexible head, instead of the groomer having to flex their wrist, the brush does it for them.” And combs are no longer onesize-fits-all, they have evolved as well. They now come in different sizes and shapes, with different lengths of teeth and the widths between them. “A well-made comb can last thirty to forty years,” says Ruthi of Ashley Craig. “High quality combs have teeth that won’t bend or fall out. The finished product is well-balanced, and that helps the teeth glide through the coat. Our Greyhound comb is handmade, pin by pin, and passes through no less than eleven sets of hands before it gets its colored

anti-static finish coat and is ready for the groomer to use.” “The Greyhound combs are sturdy and nicely rounded so they don’t jab the dogs skin,” shares Nancy Gross, owner of Doggone Stylish. “I have used them for years and they really hold up.” “I love the Chris Christensen ‘face’ comb, especially for cats,” says Amanda McGrath, owner of Pine Lane Grooming. “It gives a much nicer finish and separates the hair beautifully,” The brand of brushes and combs that a groomer decides to use is a highly personal choice. What works great for one person may not be the best fit for another. If you can go to a trade show and see how the brush or comb feels in your hand – and maybe actually try it out on a demo dog - you may just find that those high-end tools are a bargain at any price! ✂

READING BODY POSTURE TO AVOID

AGGRESSION E by Steven Appelbaum e

A

s all experienced dog trainers and behavioral specialists will tell you, when dealing with behavioral challenges, you must address their root causes if you realistically expect to eliminate or reduce the actual behavior. This is relevant for groomers. Dogs who try to bite you are typically doing so for two—possibly three —reasons: STRESS Stress is one of the most common causes of aggression. Think about this from the dogs’ perspective. They

18

are brought to a strange location; one they have learned to view negatively. Once there, they are approached by someone who might not take the time to respond to any of their signals of distress, alarm, etc. Instead, they’re put in a room where other dogs might be barking or excited, and then placed in a cage. After a while, they are taken out of their cage by someone who also might ignore all attempts on the dogs’ part to communicate their discomfort. They are put in a cold tub and bathed—not something most dogs enjoy—and scrubbed with shampoos that could

smell unnatural to the dog. They are then either put back in the cage or tied to a table and roughly (from their perspective) brushed, combed, and groomed. The procedure, while not agonizing, is often not comfortable. All of which can cause stress. LEARNED BEHAVIOR Some dogs learn that by being aggressive they can prevent certain things from happening. For example; a groomer reaches for an area of the dog’s body that she doesn’t want touched. The dog bites or snaps and the groomer quickly stops trying to

touch her in that spot. PAIN-ELICITED AGGRESSION This is exactly as the name suggests. When confronted with pain, dogs will fight (snap, growl, bite), take flight (attempt to escape), or freeze. Some dogs who initially try to escape and can’t will default to one of the other behaviors—biting or freezing. Regardless, the root cause isn’t the aggression, it is the pain stimulating it. HOW AND WHY DOGS COMMUNICATE Dogs are amazing social creatures with very sophisticated, subtle, and not so subtle ways of communicating with one another. Although modern dogs are products of human breeding, their basic social make up is to form cooperative groups to hunt. Dogs are wired to interact to-

gether. Fighting can cause injury, and, in the wild, injury can mean death. If injured, a dog can’t run, can’t keep up, and can’t hunt - meaning he doesn’t eat. If the dog doesn’t eat, he dies. Much of dog communication is about avoiding conflict with one another. How? By clearly letting other dogs know in dozens of ways what his mood and emotional state are, so that they can act accordingly. Body posture is one of the ways dogs communicate with each other. Dogs will also use body posture to communicate with human beings. However, many people have very limited or no understanding of it. If a dog is trying to communicate something to you via body posture and you are oblivious, misread it, or just don’t care, he could escalate to less subtle, more direct means of communicating, such as biting you.

Let’s review some common body postures: NEUTRAL RELAXED Dogs showing Neutral Relaxed body language are communicating that they are comfortable. The ears are held up; the dog’s general stance is relaxed. He isn’t necessarily friendly, but is not unfriendly either. The tail is relaxed or wagging very slightly. Dogs exhibiting these signals should be praised and approached in a calm, friendly fashion. AROUSAL In Arousal posture, the dog’s chest is thrown out and the weight is on his front legs, which are stiff. His ears aren’t just held up, they are slightly forward as well. He is staring directly at you and his eyes are large. His tail is up and might be wagging stiffly. A word of caution about tail

wagging: Many people are bitten because they assume tail wagging is always a friendly gesture. It is not. Stiff tail wagging with the tail held high is usually a warning as well as a sign of dominance. The dog’s lips might be lifted to show you his lovely and large teeth. He might be growling or silent. When you see this type of posture stop and use caution. Here’s a dog secret: A direct straight-line approach with eye contact is usually considered rude and forceful in a dog’s world. Instead, in a friendly fashion, avoid eye contact, crouch slightly, and approach the dog at an angle. ACTIVE SUBMISSION Most people recognize Active Submission, although they might miss some of the signs, which include ears back, tail tucked or held low, a raised paw, and eyes half closed. The dog’s

body is often crouched, some might urinate, others will grimace or display a submissive grin—(they wrinkle their muzzles and show their teeth.) Dogs exhibiting these behaviors will occasionally pant, which can be a sign of stress. Some dogs will growl if approached. The thing to understand about these dogs is that ignoring their warning signs can sometimes cause them to escalate to aggression. Calm, gentle handling is imperative. DEFENSIVE AGGRESSION What sometimes happens when Active Submission signs are ignored? It escalates to Defensive Aggression. These dogs exhibit many of the same signs as Active Submission but they are more exaggerated; the ears are back, the tail is down, the hackles might be raised, the muzzle in a snarl, growling, and the dog is ready to flee or attack. In a natural setting, if a dog exhibited

this behavior and you approached, most would simply back away or run away. Neither of which is an option when a dog is unable to escape. These dogs must be approached and handled with care or they might bite. Hopefully this furthers your understanding of what dogs are trying to communicate with their body language. In future articles, I will address ways to handle some of the more difficult types of dogs and how to reduce stress. ✂ Steve Appelbaum is the President of Animal Behavior College, the nation’s largest animal career vocational school. NEW ENGLAND GROOMING SHOW’S CREATIVE STYLING PEOPLE’S CHOICE WINNER

NIKKI ELIE SHARES HER STORY

E by Melissa Viera e Sturbridge, MA — I was fortunate enough to make it to the New England Grooming Show Sunday, October 4th, and along with browsing the booths and purchasing some new products, I found my way to the Creative Styling Awards. Groomers have to be some of the most fun-loving and supportive people around. The thought and talent that goes into creative styling is impressive, and putting your work out there to be judged has to take a lot of courage. The entire competition was a thrill to watch. The audience was a big part of the competition, showing their support with clapping and cheering, and even choosing the People’s Choice Winner. There is a special bond between these dogs and groomers, which anyone

24

who witnesses their interaction can clearly see. There were a lot of wagging tails and kisses on stage. One poodle, “Country Poodle Girl”, really caught my attention with her happy attitude and flashy presence. Groomer Nikki Elie with “Country Poodle Girl” was the winner of the People’s Choice Award. Elie is the owner of Immaculate Pooch Grooming located in Leicester, MA, and has been grooming for seven years. Elie’s grooming career started when she was an assistant for Jennifer Courteau at Puppy Cuts. “I started by helping her clean her salon on busy days, and quickly worked my way up to bathing and prepping dogs. their grooms, I knew instantly I wanted to become a dog groomer. Jenn helped teach me the basics of grooming and helped set me on the path to becoming the groomer I am today”, says Elie. In 2010, Elie attended her first grooming show hosted by NEPGP (New England Pet Grooming Professionals); attending every seminar she could fit into her schedule. She has since been attending as many shows as possible. “I truly believe you can never learn too much, the more knowledge you have within your field, the better you can care for the pets you work with”, says Elie. “After becoming a member of the NEPGP I fell in love with all this organization had to offer. This organization quickly made me feel like I was a part of

their family. From attending the seminars they offered and speaking with other members of NEPGP, I was able to gain the confidence I needed to become a professional groomer.” Elie made the decision to open her own grooming salon in December of 2010 with the help and support of her Dad and friends. “I am very happy with the success of Immaculate Pooch, and

the ability to meet so many wonderful pets and people,” says Elie. This was Elie’s first time being a competitor, and with the help of “County Poodle Girl,” also known as Poodle Marie, Elie was able to calm her nerves and remain focused. “Being on stage in front of and next to so many wonderful groomers was very nerve wracking. Poodle Marie’s happiness helped calm my nerves.” Poodle Marie was surrendered to Elie three years ago, when her family was not able to give her the care she needed. Elie always wanted a poodle, and Poodle Marie coming into her life is what she considers “pure luck.” Elie’s advice to anyone considering becoming a groomer or who is new to grooming is to never stop learning. Elie recommends talking to other groomers and asking questions, taking in as much information as possible through reading books about both the industry and grooming techniques, and attending seminars. “Ask yourself why you want to be a dog groomer. Set goals for yourself to learn certain aspects of grooming, and never lose sight of these.” Elie encourages anyone considering competing to go for it. “Putting yourself and your work out there to be judged and critiqued is extremely difficult. The satisfaction of being a part of the competition and conquering that fear is much more rewarding.” Elie’s first Creative Styling competition took a lot of preparation from growing out Poodle Marie’s coat to picking colors, music, and getting a backdrop in place. Elie is especially thankful for the support of the other contestants in including Angela Kumpe, Kelly Muniz, and Katie Heikkila, along with everyone else who made the show possible, especially the judges and sponsors. When asked what she loves most about the grooming industry, Elie leaves us with this, “I am proud to be a pet groomer, I have found the industry as a whole is filled with many people who genuinely care about the profession and the pets we care for. There are many of us who have helped not only fellow groomers, but many pets and families in so many ways. I am proud to be a part of an industry where people are quick to help with advice, in times of need or emergencies.” ✂

BRAIDING E by Deborah Walker e

B

raiding is a new and exciting way of adding creativity to your grooming. Adding this technique to your extra service will set you apart from the competition. Any dog that has at least a 4 inch coat can have braiding done as an enhancement to their finished look. Braiding is the next up and coming phenomenon that is crossing the grooming nation; from one braid to braiding the whole dog. So get on the braid wagon and let’s get

32

started. To start braiding, you must condition the hair properly. To accomplish your goals the coat must not be too oily or too dry. Some coats may require medium to heavy conditioner to help weigh the coat down. Gel or mousse can be used to help control the direction in which you are setting the coat, or you can braid the hair when wet. The coat should be at least 4 inches or longer to braid; the longer

the hair, the easier it is to braid. Braiding coat can help with hair growth and protect the hair shafts from breakage. But keep in mind, the animal has moving parts so don’t set the braids too tight to the skin that they would restrict the dogs movement. When the dog gets off of your table and the braids are too tight, it may cause the dog to scratch the braids out. Don’t make them too loose because the braids may not hold.

There is single braiding and French braiding, as well as bead stacking. These different types of braiding can enhance beauty and help protect the coat from matting and breakage as the hair grows. Beading and bows are also a fun way to add style and color to your dog. BASIC BRAIDING Once the coat is properly prepared, comb the hair straight. Then begin dividing the hair into 3 parts. Hold the parts in both hands, the thumbs hold the center part. Start with the left section of hair and over lay the hair across the center section. The left section becomes the center part and the center part becomes the left section of the braid. Next, take the right section and lay it over the center part, making the right section the center and making the center the right section. Repeat this over and over until you get the

length of braid you desire. Tie it off with a small rubber band, a baby hair clip, or a bead at the end. BEADS Adding beads is a snap. All you need is a crochet hook and different color beads. The opening of the bead must be large enough to get a crochet hook and hair though the hole of the bead. Place the bead on the crochet hook, wrap the hairs around the crochet hook then pull the hair through the hole in the bead. If you miss some hair, don’t panic, just place the crochet hook back through the hole and gather the rest of the hair. Push the bead in place and move to your next step. You can place as many beads as you wish or braid between beads. Allow enough hair at the end to rethread or tie off with a rubber band or clips. To tie the bead back into the coat without using rubber bands, you

take the section of hair that is hanging down below the bead and bring it back up to top of the bead, then wrap it around the crochet hook and pull it through the bead again. FRENCH BRAIDING For French braiding you start out the same way as the single braid; comb and divide the hair into 3 parts. Hold the parts in both hands, the thumbs hold the center part. Start with the left section of hair and over lay the hair across the center part. The left section becomes the center part and the center part becomes the left section of the braid. Next, take the right section and lay it over the center part, making the right section the center and making the center the right section. At this point you have completed the first cycle of braiding. Continue braiding until you are ready to start adding hair to the braid. We recommend braiding a few times

and then start adding hair. Starting with the left section, lay it over the center part, then with your little finger pick up a few hairs and then place those few hairs over the center also. The center now has become the left section and the left section has become the center. At this point, take the right section and lay it over the center. Using your little finger, grab a few more hairs and place it over the center with the other hairs. Repeat these steps as you go down the direction you want the braid to go. French braiding looks good going down the back of the dog, starting from the head to tail. You can split the braid from the rump and travel the braids down both back legs as well. A bead stack can be used for the topknot to protect breakage of coat

and is nice to look at. To start, divide the topknot into 3 sections. Next, place a bead in each section, then gather all three sections into one and add another bead. You do not need to braid the hair to get the same affect. You may also choose to split the hair into more sections depending on the length of hair you have to work with. Practice makes perfect. Practice on stuffed animals until you get the hang of it. Dogs are moving objects so if you get the technique down then it’s easier to work with them. Adding bows and other types of creative items is left up to the imagination of the stylist. Creative braiding can go anywhere…the head, shoulders, hips, neck, back and even ears and tail. Good luck, HAPPY CREATING!! ✂

KEEPING THE FLUFFBALL FLUFFY

C

ute! Cute! Cute! Isn’t this why we became groomers? To cuddle the cute fluffy ones? Now that we’ve disabused ourselves of the notion that they are all going to be cute fluff balls ….what do we do? I am so happy when the owner of a young pup brings the dog in for a first grooming. Everything is new to a puppy; I can do the sanitary trim, ears and nails, and neaten the dog up. Sometimes, the owner wants the pup cut down because (they fear) there is too much hair. Too much hair for what? I always try to convince them to enjoy it while they can - because the dog WILL matt up, and they will have to get the hair cut off….and Fluffy won’t be so fluffy. Why will the dog matt? Coat

change! The fine puppy coat hairs will start to become stronger, thicker adult coat. The puppy coat is very dry, and the cuticle of the hair will be open. And that’s how it starts; the static electricity of living, the cuticle of the hair being open, ‘locking’ into other hair cuticles and closing. And once it’s locked, it’s locked. I use several detangling products, but we still break a lot of hair in the process. With many Afghan Hounds, you can see the adult coat at the roots of the puppy coat; the puppy fuzz at the ends of a stronger, thicker, less dry shaft adult silk coat. With some dogs, they will suddenly lose a lot of hair— almost like a skin disease, and the new coat grows in. This is true of a lot of double coated dogs, like Shetland Sheepdogs. It happens when the dog

reaches sexual maturity (so, if the dog was neutered before reaching sexual maturity, you really don’t know what you are going to end up with—-but usually a blend of puppy and adult coat). Years ago, I had a large number of Old English Sheepdog clients who rarely ever made it out of the coat change. The breeders in my area would keep the pups in coat as long as they could, and when the coat started changing, shaved the dogs down and didn’t show the dogs until they were over two-years-old (it takes that long to grow a coat back to its full length in a large breed). Some people manage to stay on track, put the dog on a grooming schedule, gain control, and work through the coat change. Often, they

WEIGHTY MATTERS: WHEN FLUFF HIDES THE FLAB E by Jennifer Adolphe, PhD, RD e WHEN HEALTHY BECOMES HEFTY Groomers are a key member of a pet’s care team and can help pet parents identify when there might be just a little bit too much flab underneath all of that fur. Even a small amount of weight gain has been shown to decrease dogs’ lifespan by about two years. Having the weight conversation with pet parents is much easier when you can provide your clients with some sound suggestions and solutions. WHY PETS PUDGE? A first step is for owners to understand what causes pets to gain weight.

42

For many pets, it is a result of too little exercise, too much good food, and an excess of treats. Also, there are some dog breeds that are more prone to weight gain, particularly those breeds that are more likely to be lying on the couch than climbing mountains. WHAT DOES A FIT PET LOOK LIKE? A fit pet has an hourglass body shape when viewed from above, a slight tummy tuck, and a thin covering of body fat over the ribs and spine. When running your hands along a pet’s body, you should be able to feel the ribs and hips without pressing

hard. TIPPING THE SCALES If you think a pet needs to shed a pound or two, the owner should speak with their vet to help determine the pet’s ideal body weight. It is easy to check a pet’s progress at home. Simply get on a home scale holding the pet and subtract your weight from the total amount. No cheating! Weighing out a pet’s food using a kitchen scale is much more accurate and allows for small adjustments to the daily amount fed. A 1-2 percent body weight loss per week is just right,

43

as a rapid decline in weight can be harmful to the pet. If too much or too little weight has been lost during the previous week, adjust the amount of food until a slow and steady weight loss is achieved. Continue adjusting food intake and assessing body condition weekly until the pet reaches an ideal body weight. TREAT SMART Who doesn’t like to reward their pets? Most pets become very adept at asking for them on a daily basis. Treating is great for training and bonding with pets, but it needs to be done in moderation. When choosing a treat, look for whole food, natural ingredients. Another option is to offer healthy, low-calorie, whole food snacks such as cut carrots and apples. Pets get to munch and crunch without putting on extra pounds.

DOGS ARE WHAT THEY EAT If your pet needs to lose a bit of weight, a food specially formulated for weight loss may help. Remember that the feeding guidelines on the bag are simply a place to start. Energy requirements of pets can vary tremendously, even between pets of the same weight, so it is important to adjust how much you feed based on the amount needed to maintain an ideal body weight. Groomers play an important role in helping pet parents learn how to assess their pet’s weight and keep their dogs fit. And as these dogs slim down, the owners may just notice a more pawsitive and energetic companion. ✂ Dr. Jennifer Adolphe graduated with her Ph.D. in companion animal nutrition from the University of Saskatchewan. While windswept, slightly mussy hair might be attractive on someone who looks more like Taylor Swift; I look more like Kathy Bates. Good thing I’m a mobile groomer and have access to combs, brushes, and hair dryers before entering a client’s home looking less than professional.

I was driving with my windows down because it was the preferable choice as the other option was death by carbon monoxide poisoning. I knew I had an exhaust leak, but did not realize that the hole in the pipe was directly under the cab. I had scheduled the repair for several weeks in the future for when I was on vacation. My clients would be very happy, as there would be no need to reschedule them. As the owner of an aging vehicle, my clients have gotten used to unsched-

The latch on the door separating the cab and my workspace was broken and I had not gotten around to fixing it. And because the latch was broken, the door would swing open while driving. Since this monitor was battery operated and not wired into the generator, it was set off when carbon monoxide gas began to

spill out of the cab and fill the work area. Had the detector been wired into the generator, it would not have alerted me as I was driving. Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas and I may not have ever realized I was being poisoned without the detector doing its job.

WHY IS CARBON MONOXIDE GAS A PROBLEM? When you breathe in carbon monoxide, it causes a reduction in oxygen in red blood cells. Your organs need that oxygen in the blood stream to “breathe.” This lack of oxygen suffocates your vital organs. Low levels of carbon monoxide in the air can cause permanent heart and brain damage,

while high levels will kill you quickly. Even at low levels, carbon monoxide is more dangerous to you than heart or lung disease. The half life of carbon monoxide is five hours. That means it takes five hours for half of the carbon monoxide in your body to dissipate. And then it takes another 5 hours for half of what is left to leave your body. So after 10 hours, your body is retaining 25% of the carbon monoxide you were initially exposed to. But carbon monoxide poisoning is not limited to vehicle engine exhaust leaks. Carbon monoxide can find its way into your vehicle through: Poorly sealed or aging floors, as well as open windows and doors. Exhaust from idling vehicles or generators can drift into your work area. Malfunctioning or improperly vented kerosene, oil, or propane heaters. In addition to the danger of carbon

monoxide build-up, they also pose a fire hazard. Exhaust from fuel-powered equipment can be pulled into our work areas by our intake fans when lawn and maintenance companies are working at a client’s house at the same time we are there. Initial symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can mimic the flu. Symptoms include: •  Headache •  Drowsiness •  Feeling faint •  Nausea or vomiting •  Fatigue •  Rapid or irregular breathing •  Confusion •  Disorientation •  Overall weakness •  Chest pain in people with heart disease

•  Impaired judgment Higher concentrations of carbon monoxide can cause unconsciousness, coma and death. The difference between flu symptoms and carbon monoxide poisoning is that with the flu, you don’t feel better once you leave the affected area. By the time you notice the symptoms, it may already be too late. The longer you are exposed to carbon monoxide, the worse your personal outcome is. In addition, age, genetics, and health can play a role in how well a person reacts to carbon monoxide poisoning. In the same time frame, one person may get a headache whereas another may die. While you may not be able to prevent carbon monoxide from entering your workspace, you can be alerted

to its danger. Install battery operated carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries at least once a year. Detectors are easily sourced through local hardware and supply stores, as well as on online sites such as Amazon. Install this detector according to manufacturer directions. Needless to say, the repair I scheduled during my vacation was moved up and those clients rescheduled. By the time this is in print, I should have my new grooming vehicle. I’m not sure who is more excited, my clients or myself. Carbon monoxide poisoning is not to be taken lightly, as there are permanent - and in some cases - very permanent consequences. ✂

DETOXIFYING

MASKS WHAT THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY DO E by Michelle Knowles e

I

n the new world of “Spa” that has taken the grooming world by storm, there are many concoctions, products, and ingredients that are being offered to us to help heal and detoxify the skin and coat of the pet friends that we see every day. Masks and Oils are used for this purpose to prepare the skin and coat

to receive a therapeutic shampoo or treatment. CLAYS Clay is an excellent detoxification substance. With an alkaline PH and a high negative ionic charge, this clay alkalizes the skin and pulls toxins, both pathogenic and environmental, from

the skin and coat. As a substance made of super charged, inert minerals, clay has a magnetic affinity for heavy metals, viruses, and parasites, among other things. These attributes revitalize and rebuild cells that have been damaged. There are several types of clay that can be used during the masking process.

Masks are used to treat any kind of rash, infection, dryness, and inflammation. Clays and combinations of clays and oils can be used anywhere on the body except mucous membranes. Sebaceous zones such as the feet, armpits, groin, and belly all benefit from masking. Here are some examples: Bentonite - formed of volcanic ash and water over long periods of time,

this clay has anti-bacterial properties and is powerfully detoxifying. Green - Rich in iron and magnesium, it is a quick absorber for oils and toxins. White - sometimes known as Kaolin or argil, this is a very gentle clay and is used for sensitive, dry, and elderly skin. With exceptional softening properties, it is ideal for crusts and

thickened skin, even when infection is present. It has anti-bacterial as well as detoxification properties. Fuller Earth - This antiseptic clay has a grit-like texture that is used as an exfoliator. OILS While any of these clays can be used as a foundation for a Mask, many of them benefit from added oils that provide healing properties as well as help the clay stick to the area being treated. Argan Oil - Contains a high concentration of vitamin E and fatty acids, is more stable in UV rays and is a strong antioxidant. Olive Oil - This extra moisturizing oil is rich in polyphenols, squalene, and fatty acids. It can help ageing and extremely dry skin. Avocado Oil - This nutritious oil is full of vitamins A, D, and E. Along with its powerful antioxidant properties, it is valuable in soothing dry skin. Emu Oil - This oil promotes wound healing from burns, rashes, and allergic reactions. It is readily recognized by the skin. Clays and oils as detoxifiers are one of the steps in the therapeutic process that can really make a difference in a skin that is suffering. As always, do your research to make sure the products that you are using are sourced in a responsible way and have full disclosure on their packaging. This keeps you informed about the products that you have on your hands every day, as well as the entire skin of the pet friend you are treating. ✂ Michelle Knowles is the spa director of The Tender Paw Day Spa at Animal Health Services of Cave Creek Surgical and Diagnostic Center in Cave Creek Arizona.

BREAD & BUTTER GROOMING:

FAST & EASY PET TRIMS FOR THE SALON by Kathy Rose

AFTER

BEFORE

YORKIE PET TRIM WITH ROUND HEAD

T

he Yorkie is one of the breeds found most often on our Bread & Butter client list. The trim styles are versatile and the coat types, body types, and sizes vary considerably on the pets that we encounter. This version of a teddy type pet trim takes advantage of the silkier coat type, leaving a slight skirt following the outline of the dog. The round head opens the eyes and helps to enhance a cute expression. Preparation is, as always, important. Shampoo, followed by light conditioning and a fluff dry will help

Fig.1) Support the back of the ear leather with your fingers and clip the inside and outside top ¼ to ⅓ of the ear, following coat growth direction. Fig.2) Shave the upper and lower lips just under the nose. Fig.3) For the front legs, lift the long leg coat up and out of the way. With the foot on the table, round the foot using curved shears. Continue to hold the longer leg coat out of the way, then lift the leg slightly and round the foot. Comb the leg coat down and

repeat. Fig.4) For the rear feet, lift the leg slightly and round the foot. Fig.5) From the back, lift the leg and trim around the bottom of the foot. For safety, in case the dog kicks, avoid placing the scissor blade across the pad. Fig.6) Use a rattail comb to part the back coat. A greyhound or poodle comb, held on an angle as shown, will also work. Fig.7) Use curved shears to trim the tuck-up. Lift the rear leg, showing the bend in stifle. Trim from foot to knee and then turn upward, angling

toward the tuck up. When the leg is lifted in a natural position, the tuck up will be approximately where the knee hits the underline. Fig.8) Use thinning shears to trim the back of the upper thigh. Trim to just above the hock; tidy from the hock down to the foot. Trim the tail to client’s preferred length. Fig.9) Hold the ear upright; use small scissors to trim the outside ear fringe, starting at the cheek coat ending at the tip. Then trim the other side from just above the base to the tip. Both sides of the ear should have more fringe at the base, culminating into a point at the tip. Fig.10) To finish the ear, fold the ear between thumb and finger tips then trim toward the tip. If the tick looks flat, it has probably attached recently. If the tick is engorged, it may mean that it has been feeding for an extended time. The longer a tick has been feeding on your pet (or you) before being discovered, the greater chance that it will transfer disease. In many cases a ‘bullseye rash’ will appear at the site of a tick bite.

Once the tick has been removed, place it in a sealed container or a small sealable plastic bag. You can add a squirt of tick spray to kill it, or simply seal the bag or container and place it in the trash. Ticks need humidity to survive and will perish without it. Do not flush ticks down the toilet. They can survive in the water.

We Are Here to Help You

Ticks are far too dangerous to ignore. Just one bite from these tiny terrors could affect you or your pet for the rest of your lives. Your best defense against ticks and the diseases they carry is prevention. We can recommend tick removal tools and a wide range of the products you may need to protect your pets and their environment. Please ask for product recommendations that will safely protect you and your pet from these tiny, treacherous predators.

One of the most wonderful, caring things you can do for your pet is to spend time together. Make grooming a special bonding time between you and your pet. If you begin brushing while his hair is short and not tangled, he will be more accepting of it. Start with very short sessions and gradually lengthen them as your pet learns to enjoy daily grooming. Use treats and plenty of praise to reinforce a positive grooming experience. Be sure to use the brushing technique that your groomer demonstrated to you, also see the pamphlet Learning to Brush Your Pet. The importance of thorough brushing followed by a complete combing cannot be overemphasized. This small investment of your time can pay off with tremendous benefits in your pet’s happiness and well being, not to mention his appearance. Banners

Say it in a big way with these attention-grabbing banners!

6 x 2’ and 4’ x 2’ banners cover the gamut of things that you would do in your grooming salon or kennel. Get your clients attention the moment they walk in the door. These banners have grommets for ease of display and will pay back their cost in a day!

Aaronco Posters AARONCO publishes a complete collection of laminated posters that help groomers communicate with their customers by eliminating the confusion due to various grooming styles. Each poster represents one of the seven AKC dog groups, showing properly groomed dogs. The posters are printed in black and white and are laminated for attractiveness and durability, which allows them to be hung with or without framing. They are sold individually and in sets of 9. Posters sold individually ship in their own cardboard tube. Posters sold in the set of 9 ship in one cardboard tube.
