GROOMING MATTERS by Daryl Conner

DOUBLE COATED DOGS WHICH COMES FIRST THE

BRUSH OR THE BATH? O

ver the weekend a groomer friend in another state sent me a message, “I am grooming a huge Shetland Sheepdog that has not seen a brush in years. My hands hurt. Are there any tricks to get this dog groomed faster?” I asked if she was brushing the dog before bathing it, and she was. I reminded her that brushing out a clean, conditioned coat was far easier than working on a dirty one, and recommended she get the dog in the tub. I suggested that after he was nice and clean, she saturate his coat with conditioner and try brushing out the tangles in the tub, removing dead

coat with the help of the conditioner, then rinsing and drying. An hour later she messaged, “He’s done. He looks fabulous. Thanks!” I see this topic come up often on internet grooming forums. “Do you pre–groom the dog before the bath? Where I work we clip and brush them first.” When I was taught to groom 35 years ago, that is exactly what we did. Dogs were brushed and clipped, then bathed and dried before the finish work was done. It was a total shock to me to learn about 10 years into my career that many groomers wash the dogs before doing anything else. Change can be hard, and it can

even feel threatening to have someone point out that there might be a better way to work than what you have been doing all along. But change can also be wonderful, and if you are in the camp that pre–grooms dirty dogs, I hope you will keep an open mind and try something new. Here are some reasons why this method is helpful: • Using your clipper blades and scissors on a dirty coat causes them to become dull much faster. You will save money on having your tools sharpened and maintained if you use them on clean fur. • Working on dirty coats may be bad for your health. That might sound

strange, but when you are brushing unwashed fur, you are inhaling dust, dander, allergens, and sometimes urine and feces trapped in the coat. By washing first, you are being kinder to your body. • A clean, conditioned coat is far easier to brush out than a dirty coat. Dirt, dander and sebum, along with dust and sometimes even plant matter, all work together to keep hair clumped and tangled. Once the debris is washed away and a conditioner is applied to help smooth the cuticles on the hair shafts, you will find the pet is easier to brush. • Brushing dirty, dry hair can damage the coat. Working on clean, conditioned fur and using detangling products will cause less harm to the hair. Damaged coat will be more susceptible to tangling in the future,

so preventing damage as you work will have dividends that will pay off when you groom that pet next. The general rule of thumb for me, and many other groomers, is that almost all dogs get bathed before anything else. Exceptions may be if you are grooming a dog that you plan to clip down very short due to coat condition (extreme matting) or owner request. Another exception to the rule might be if you are working on a dog that has issues being dried. Out of the hundreds of dogs I groom, there are two that are impossible to use a dryer of any kind on. One is a Standard Poodle that will viciously attack any dryer and/or the person using it, and the other is a Lhasa Apso that has hated the dryer his entire life and hates it extra now that he is a very old man. Both dogs are pre–clipped, then bathed and finished damp. Their owners understand that the haircuts won’t be perfect and are grateful that I am willing to work with their pets’ personality issues to get the job done as best as I can. When you pre–bathe a dog such as the Sheltie I mentioned earlier, you set yourself up for a much easier groom. Here is how: 1. Get the dog as clean as you possibly can, washing multiple times if necessary. Bathing systems are particularly useful when working with double coated breeds. 2. Saturate the coat with conditioner, paying special attention to the areas where the matting is severe, trying to get it right down to the skin. 3. Try a variety of tools to see what will work best. For some coats this will be a slicker style brush, for others a rake type tool may do the trick. Keep in mind that the animal’s skin will be more delicate because

Getting just the right shade of gray proved to be a bit more challenging than Niki had planned for and in the end she resorted to the use of chalks to get the job done. Fig 3) To make the realistic squirrel ears, Niki left a fringe of hair around the outer edges of Annee's ears and gently secured the ears back with small latex grooming bands. The effect was perfect. Fig 4) Niki was not sure what to do for the tail of the squirrel but her mom, Barb noticed that I had large pieces of alpaca wool hide I used for demonstrating airbrushing and coat carving that would do the trick. Barb purchased the piece of white wool and the next time I saw the wool it had become a huge, fluffy gray squirrel tail with the help of some chalk and a dab of glue in just the right places. The end result was a creative groom that everyone has just gone nuts for. TIME FOR

AND AVOIDING

BURNOUT E by Mary Oquendo e

About two years into my mobile grooming business, I was grooming eight pets a day, five days a week. I was tired, grouchy and achy.

Y

es, the money was awesome. But, with no time for activities or myself, I was quickly approaching burnout. A decision needed to be made. Do I keep on working myself ragged or do I start taking better care of myself?

WHAT IS BURNOUT? Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to:

• PHYSICAL & EMOTIONAL EXHAUSTION. You’re simply tired all the time and quick to anger. Your muscles and joints don’t get a chance to relax.

16

Groomer to Groomer • Vol 37 Ed 9 • September 2018

GroomertoGroomer.com

There is also a tendency to grab quick, high calorie and high fat meals, as you don’t have the time to prepare healthy options ahead of time.

• CYNICISM & DETACHMENT. Because you are tired, you lack clarity and discernment. You may easily misunderstand someone’s motives or message and respond inappropriately. • FEELING INEFFECTIVE. You question your career choice—what you used to love, you now dread. • ALWAYS TIRED. Burnout affects the quality of your sleep. You wake up tired. The snooze button timer is

less than a sleep cycle. Sleep cycles are typically anywhere between 60–120 minutes. Consistently hitting snooze contributes to your overall exhaustion throughout the day. Then I stumbled upon this university study: Harvard University tracked 724 men over a 79–year period to see what factors contributed to success and happiness. What they found were the men who fostered close relationships; both personal and business, were the happiest, healthiest and the most successful. I knew that making drastic changes overnight was a sure fire recipe for failure so I slowly changed some of the factors that were contributing to my burnout. Some of the changes I slowly

instituted included: 1. Getting my schedule under control. Either I could hire a groomer or reduce my workload. Personally, hiring a groomer was not a viable option for me. Adding employees would only increase my stress levels. Reducing my workload was the path I chose. Reducing workload starts with identifying those clients who are problematic and releasing them. I raised my prices to account for the loss of income. I set boundaries with my clients and my first Terms Of Service was crafted. I instituted weight restrictions, frequency of grooms and penalties for no–shows. Most importantly, I enforced the new rules. Not everyone was happy and sought out other options. Within a

My body and mind felt so much better. 2. Taking better care of myself. I started the day with a no sugar or high fat breakfast and brought a healthy lunch. That meant preparing food the night before. It had to be ready to go in the morning. If it wasn’t, then I found myself grabbing something quick (i.e. unhealthy) at a gas station or fast food joint. I carved out a lunch break where I could eat and digest my food. Massages and spa days became a regular part of my life. Our muscles work hard and they need tender care. Massage isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Orthopedic quality floor mats along with supportive footwear are also a necessity. While some people like to meditate in the morning, I prefer meditation just before going to bed as I can get my mind off of the merry go round and get some sleep. Meditation has many benefits including reducing stress, as well as improving cardiovascular and immune health, and concentration. 3. Repairing my frayed relationships. All work and no play wreaked

20

havoc with family and friends. I took a play day. I blocked out one day a week in my schedule book for fun. Vacations became real downtime with no work, no phone and no computer. I joined a friend a couple of days a week for a walk. It was nice just to get outside and talk with friends again. I spent an extra day at a trade show or workshop to see the sights with friends. I volunteered once a month with my dog at a senior center. All things I had forgotten I liked to do.

MY IDEA OF FUN MAY NOT BE YOURS. OTHER IDEAS INCLUDE: • Organized sports like softball, volleyball, soccer, bowling and so forth. • Socializing with friends doesn’t mean just hanging out at the bar (Although it could.) How about: tag-saling, book clubs or visiting farmers markets. • Girl’s (or boys) day/night out to the spa or movies. The possibilities are endless. Carving that time out for us and including friends and family has a ripple effect. We are in a better place, our relationships improve and our jobs become fulfilling again. ✂

etQuest, which took place June 21–24 at the Roberts Centre, followed the Barkleigh trend of double digit growth for the 2018 year with a 13% increase in attendance. This year’s expo displayed new grooming talents in the competitions, new educational seminars and beautiful summer weather to go along with it. The expo seemed to boast a lighthearted buzz throughout the week as grooming professionals shopped, watched competitions, continued their education and connected with other like–minded individuals. “I don’t know if it is because it takes place in the summer, and going away feels like a vacation at the time,” states Barkleigh president, Todd Shelly, “Or, if is the fact that this Holiday Inn is the most dog friendly facility, or a combination of those and other factors, but this show is always a lot of fun.” The 2018 show displayed a record attendance of 1,613 professional pet stylists and service experts. The expo also saw an increase in booth spaces with 73 companies providing an abundance of new grooming products and styling tools. PetQuest’s popular grooming competitions, that awarded over $4,700 in top prizes between them, captured the attention of all attendees. The best in show winners included: • Andis Best In Show: Lindsey Dicken • Purina Pro Plan Best All Around: Lindsey Dicken • Creative: Milena Kon • Rescue–Stephanie Stempfer PetQuest ‘s contest sponsors included Purina Pro Plan, Andis, Groomer’s Mall, Electric Cleaner Company, Nature’s Specialties and TropiClean. ✂

lean air. We step outside for a fresh breath of it to clear our heads and rejuvenate our spirits. But what have we just stepped out of and what are we stepping back into? If you care about a safe and successful business, but you’re not cleaning your indoor air, you are putting your clients, your business and your health at risk. The following are some air cleaning basics you need to know.

WHY GROOMING ENVIRONMENTS ARE AT INCREASED RISK FOR THE SPREAD OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES You maintain an immaculate business, cleaning surfaces after ev-

ery client, but the reality is most germs that can wreak havoc on your clients and your business are airborne—and they stay that way for long periods of time. Upper respiratory infections in animals such as dog flu, feline calicivirus and canine cough can spread in an instant. A cough here. A sneeze there. While some infectious germs (or pathogens) may fall to the surface, most remain in the air and infectious for long periods of time. Grooming environments are also particularly susceptible to infectious diseases living in the air thanks to constant dander shedding from clipping and brushing. Further, thanks to

bathing and high humidity levels, the environment is prime for fostering bacteria that can lead to a variety of infections, including upper respiratory.

HOW INFECTIOUS DISEASES ARE SPREAD THROUGH THE AIR Most of us “get” how disease can spread through contact with contaminated objects. We can see the slobber-covered bowl or toy. We can also see direct contact with infected dogs; touching noses, sniffing butts. We can clean the objects and avoid the other dogs, but what about what we can’t see? Canine cough and influenza, for example, are airborne

When an infected animal coughs, sneezes, barks or even sheds dander—just once—he releases thousands of microscopic contaminants into the air. While some of these contaminants are large and heavy enough to fall to the surface where they can be eliminated with surface cleaning,

most are “aerosolized”. These virtually invisible bacteria and viruses can remain viable (alive and able to infect) in the air for up to two weeks, clinging to tiny dust particles, riding on air currents and traveling throughout the environment until inhaled by another host. Once ingested, these agents begin to wreak havoc within the upper respiratory tract.

HOW UNHEALTHY AIR HURTS YOU, YOUR STAFF & YOUR BUSINESS The potentially catastrophic impact to your business from an infectious airborne disease outbreak is obvious—temporary closure for cleaning and potentially long-term damage to your reputation. But what may be less obvious when it comes to the indoor air quality is the negative effect on the day–to–day performance by you and your staff. Unhealthy air can cause high rates of absenteeism, thanks to the spread of colds or flu as well as impact even simple decision–making due to headaches. The lingering fragrance of towels washed in a scented laundry detergent, scented shampoos, grooming sprays and surface cleaners can all contribute to headache-inducing indoor air pollution. These air polluting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can also arise from fresh paint or new flooring, for example.

WHY SURFACE CLEANING IS NOT ENOUGH Of course the spread of infectious bacteria and viruses can be limited by the usual method of wiping down surfaces and tools with spray disinfectant, but it’s easy to miss microscopic contaminants that may still linger on floors, grooming tables, countertops and any other surface that needs regular cleaning. You can clean the air by sanitizing it as it passes through something that will kill the bacteria and viruses and eliminate the VOCs. That something is ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI).

ber those microscopic contaminants clinging to dust particles and endlessly riding those air currents? And what about those VOCs polluting your air? Surface cleaning does matter and must be part of any cleaning protocol but, simply put, it’s not enough.

HOW TO CLEAN THE AIR How do you clean something that surrounds you that you can’t see? Think of cleaning the air somewhat like cooling the air. Very simply put, air conditioners work by cooling air as it goes through them. Hot air goes in, cold air comes out. You can clean the air by sanitizing it as it passes through something that will kill the bacteria and viruses and eliminate the VOCs. That something is ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). UVGI is often just called UV but it is not the same UV as the UV–A or UV–B we hear about more often that cause premature aging (UV–A) or skin cancer (UV–B), for example. This UV, rather, has been used for 100 years to disinfect, sanitize and control infection in hospitals and other highly sensitive environments where maintaining sanitary air circulation, as well as surface areas, are critical. In a nutshell, this UV kills bacteria and viruses and, in the proper set up, can be used to reduce VOCs as well as foul smells. Portable, upper air and mobile UVGI products can target specific areas of your business. UVGI can also be integrated with your HVAC system to disinfect the air throughout your business. However, while UV technology is ideal for optimized air cleaning, it must be the right UV. The truth is, you get what you pay for. “Over the counter” UV light is not strong enough and cannot achieve a high enough bacteria and virus kill rate that’s needed to be effective. Fur-

ASK THE GROOMING TUTOR by Michell Evans

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Hello Michell. We are so busy that we have a waiting list. If our customers don’t want to wait until we have an available appointment, we require them to book the earliest available appointment that works for them and then put them on the waiting list.

“W

e tell them that we will call them if anything opens up at an earlier date. It takes a lot of time to manage the schedule. We are all working in extra dogs when we can. The salon is chaotic. My groomers are burned out. I hate to complain because I know what it’s like to wish we had more dogs on the schedule. Do you have any suggestions on how to better manage the work load? Thank you.” — Jennifer Hi Jennifer. Our natural inclination when we are booked too heavy is to expand. The typical progression of this comes in the order of expand in hours, expand in number of employees,

impose customer restrictions, expand square footage and increase prices. If you are considering expanding in hours, be sure that each member of your current staff is not expected to work more than forty hours per week. Even if they know they should only work forty hours, they might find themselves adding just one more dog per day and going over a reasonable work load without even realizing it. Consider being open six or even seven days per week. Or consider evening or early morning hours. The property is being paid for even when it sits empty. More hours generally means more employees. If you are planning to hire addi-

tional employees, be sure that they are qualified and that they fit the salon’s culture. It can be very difficult to find qualified groomers. They almost always need additional training which can be a burden to existing employees. I was talking to a friend in the nursing home business the other day. He was telling me that my dilemma of not being able to find qualified groomers is a problem in all industries. “It’s hard to find good help in any industry” he says. Yes, but when he puts an ad on a hiring site, he gets thirty applicants for nurse’s aides. When I put an ad out for a Certified Master Dog Groomer, I might get one if I am lucky. And who

People just don’t get it. There is a huge shortage of quality dog groomers out there in the hiring pool. There seems to be a lot of groomers who have gotten their feet wet in grooming. Restricting your customers is often a good way to reduce the work load. This is also a great way to limit any further growth of the clientele.

Consider limiting by breed, weight, disposition (of the dog and/or owner), species and form of payment. Try limiting the weight of all future new clients. It is not uncommon for salons to stop taking large dogs at some point in the growth of the clientele. They simply take more time, labor and resources than small dogs. It is OK to turn away dangerous dogs. It is OK to turn away disrespectful customers. You may want to stick to one species. Mixing cats and dogs can be a challenge. Consider having separate hours for cats so that the salon is quiet and free from dogs while grooming cats. Stop accepting credit card payments. Restructuring your salon’s payment policies can be a nice boost in income for the salon while reducing your clientele. They can pay cash and they do know how to write a check. Moving into a larger space is an

expensive option but if your salon is consistently bottlenecked and your current space is preventing you from being able to service your clients and restricting your income, it may be a good option. Luckily grooming clients tend to move with a salon. Location, location, location is not the most important aspect to a grooming salon. Grooming is a destination business. Clients only need to find you once to know where you are. They don’t need to drive by your salon everyday to be reminded of your service. The dog’s filthy hair does that for you. Consider your next move to be a larger square footage with a lesser location. This is a benefit that a new salon starting a new clientele does not have. Increasing prices is often the last place groomers expand. But this should be one of the first things that you con-

sider. When your business is spilling over for a period of six months or more, it is time for a price increase. Unless you have an annual price increase of one dollar or more, make it worth it. Meaning, do not bother agitating your customers with a one or two dollar increase. Keep in mind that many of them spend three to eight dollars per day on coffee drinks. Make it five or even ten dollars across the board. Also take a look at your current pricing and make sure that your large and/or difficult dogs are priced accordingly. Many Goldendoodles should cost at least twice as much as a Shih–Tzu, if not three times. Remember that you are losing money by doing more work on the Goldendoodle for less pay than you could earn on two or three Shih–Tzus. I hope some of the suggestions help you. Good luck! ✂

Retail YOUR SPA

The wonderful world of passive income—retail! It should literally be selling itself. There are so many salons that are getting into the retail mindset and there are so many things to offer that it can be a bit overwhelming. 42

oys, treats, clothing, food and other accessories take up valuable space. The trick is finding items that move quickly for maximum profit and minimal effort. If you are thinking about adding a retail area to your salon but don’t know where to begin, here are a few things to help you decide. Every salon has its own “flavor”, that is, its own types of services; a certain demographic or type of client that uses your services; or a set of services that is expected by your clients. For the beginning retailer, this could mean that you offer combs, brushes and a detangling spray. These items not only bring in passive income but may also decrease the dematting and brushing time of the next grooming visit. Many clients really like the way their pet feels and smells when they retrieve their pets from a fresh grooming session. Most clients really love to pamper their pets in between grooming, and for some, there may be a circumstance where the pet needs to be bathed. Instead of them using whatever they have on hand, like dish soap, baby shampoo or grocery store shampoo, offer retail sizes of the shampoo, conditioner and perfume that you use. Everyday issues like dry noses and pads are often overlooked by owners. Have a cream or a lotion on hand to sell them—and you can even make your own! These types of items tend to fly off the shelf because the owner sees a benefit

menu of services, charge appropriately and then offer a retail experience at the end that will reinforce the therapeutic value of the groom. Items that are for sale should compliment the services that you offer and resonate with the type of client that you care for. to purchase or simply gather retail sizes of the items that you use and make an at–home care package that gives the client an effective group of products that will help them care for their pet at home. Labeling and branding the products to your shop is a finishing touch that keeps clients coming back for your “special” products. Another idea that I have used in the past is to make small batches of labels that have the “pet of the month” picture on them. Clients really get a kick out of the fact that their pet is being used as a model on your branded products! Clothes, treats and food are an advanced step in the retail game and require square footage, rotating stock and seasonal offerings. These products can be tricky to move as there are so many other stores that offer these items. You may find a niche with your clientele or find really unique items that can’t be found at the local big box stores. There are so many ways to do retail. Find the ways that boost your services and compliment your shop environment. If a client or clients keep asking for a certain product, that means this is an item that you should probably carry. A good way to get ideas for things that clients might want is to simply have them fill out a survey and get a free foot soak or other type of service to thank them for their time and opinion. Retail can be very lucrative if done properly and a fun way to bring new clientele to your salon. Finding the right mix of items to sell is an adventure and a good way to expand your services and grow your business. ✂

take many years to master. Yet, over and over, children of the industry learn to groom dogs almost as seamlessly as learning a foreign language by just hanging out in the grooming shop with one of their parents, an aunt, a sibling or family friend. Learning to groom as a “child of the industry” can be both a bless-

there are countless stories of hanging out with dogs, playing in kennels or clippering their first hair (often times it was their own head or a prize show poodle with an innocent #40 blade). Their childhoods are pasted with memories of dog hair, naps on the floor, dirty dogs in the bathing tubs and helping someone groom. These “grown–up–child groomers” encompass a large portion of today’s grooming industry. They represent a connection between the past and present and contain a wealth of sometimes forgotten knowledge. Another type of family within the grooming industry includes the relatives who support, help and work alongside their loved one who came to Pet Grooming as an adult. Marci dreamed of finding a career in something she was passionate about, and when the opportunity to escape her corporate cubicle came, she leapt at the opportunity. Marci enrolled in a grooming school, put a down payment and hung out her sign at a small boutique in her community and opened Marci’s Paw Place. Marci’s business grew quickly and she soon began to enlist the aid of her teenage son and husband whenever possible. She couldn’t find reliable hourly help and the family pitched in to help her keep up with the demands of her growing business. Although it had been her sole dream, Marci’s Paw Place became a family business. Whether you find yourself having grown up inside a grooming shop, or currently work with family members within the Pet Services fields, learning to navigate your workplace with spouses, children, parents, aunts, uncles, siblings or any other family member can be a treacherous adventure. In a grooming shop environment, it can be earned many ways; hard work, long hours, mad grooming skills, exemplary customer service. Regardless of which version of these you seek, offering respect to your family member as well as earning respect for your efforts is a foundation to build an independent relationship on not defined by family ties. PROFESSIONAL & POLITE behavior should be expected in any work environment. This may mean that family discussions need to be tabled until appropriate times. This can be a delicate balance as family members will have a more intimate knowledge of one another than regular co–workers. Keeping good boundaries begins with practicing professional and polite behavior in the workplace by sticking

to this golden family rule; do unto your family member as you would expect any co–worker to do unto you. COMPETENT SKILLS will help ensure that fairness and equal treatment can be expected by all in your workplace. By ensuring that every role is filled by competent and capable hands, you can remove suggestions of favoritism or nepotism. If someone is filling a role in your workplace, make certain that they are well–suited for the position and have the skill set to perform their duties competently. I really felt that Helen was just trying to stretch out Pixie's appointments so that she would have more money to spend on her own spa treatments, manicures and twice a year cruises. The last time she canceled, she didn't call or text—she sent me a Facebook message, one hour after she was due to drop off Pixie. She said that she had to cancel Pixie, but of course needed to reschedule her immediately.

I did not get her message until the end of the day. And when I did, I decided that I was done with Helen and her shenanigans. I messaged her back. "Hi Helen. The soonest opening I have is in three weeks." (I was done squeezing her in and making special arrangements for her, and we really were booked that far out.) She replied back, "Oh, Pixie can't wait that long. She needs done now!" (Well no kidding, she had an appointment 'now'.) "I'm sorry, but that is the soonest that I have," I said. Then she continued, "I'll take Pixie to (insert a competitor's name) to be groomed." Really? That was the last straw. For years I had gone above and be-

worth. I had gone above and beyond for Helen too many times. My time is valuable too. I felt disrespected and offended by her behavior and comment. I immediately wanted to fire back a nasty reply, blasting her for all the times I had gone out of my way to accommodate her and Pixie, but that wouldn't have accomplished anything. I wasn't about to engage in a war of words with her. I just wanted her gone. Only twice in my career have I had to fire a client. But today I didn't have to fire Helen. She had just fired herself! I replied simply, "Okay, Helen. We will miss seeing little Pixie, but I'm sure they will do a great job on her. And, maybe they will be better able to accommodate your changing work schedule." If Helen had been lying by saying that she made an appointment at one of my competitors, I called her bluff. At any rate, she was no longer going to be my problem. I felt great. Every appointment she changed or missed was causing me stress and costing me time and money. My efforts had not been appreciated and I was not going to go out of my way for her again. Helen would no longer disrupt my schedule or take advantage of me. You will probably experience a client like Helen at some point in your career. And, no matter how upset or angry you get, use tact and diplomacy when you deal with them. It's very important to stay professional at all times. We all try to accommodate our clients’ needs, but you have to stand up for yourself too. There are times when you just have to say 'Enough is enough!' ✂

SHORT PERSONALITY TRIM E by Brittney Valle e

ne of our most common problems in the salon every day is finding a trim that suits our client's maintenance schedule needs but also still allows us, as groomers, to express ourselves creatively. I often hear, "I don't want to be just a shave down groomer", but recognizing that we can still give style and flair to our short pet trims is a great way to build a client base. These short personality trims don't have to be boring—you can spice them up with a cute head or ear

style for flair! This allows the owner the flexibility of rinsing the dog off at home between grooms when he digs in the garden, plays too hard at daycare or frolics across the neighbor's yard (all of these are issues with this particular dog within the last few weeks!) Fig. 1) The beauty of this trim is that it can be replicated in a variety of lengths. For this dog, I chose a #4 blade, but you can adjust accordingly for the dog or maintenance schedule you have in mind. Run the #4 blade

over the dog's entire body but skim off at the hock and knee (Fig. 2). For a tighter trim, run the blade on the inside and outside of the back legs. Fig. 3) Skim off at the elbow to achieve a column-type leg. Fig. 4) Reverse the blade you used on the body from the last rib forward as this gives the dog a tighter stomach, helps save you scissoring time and helps the dog look up on leg. Fig. 5 & 6) Shave the lips and the eyelids to help make the pigment pop. I used a #15 blade. For the lips, your shaved portion should be about the same width as the dog's nose. Make sure you pull the eyelids tight and back to keep the eye closed and gently glide across the lid.

HOW OV ERGROWTH OF

KERATIN LEADS TO CAT CLAW PROBLEMS E by Deborah Hansen e

While some fear the feline claw as a dangerous weapon, others admire the beauty and functionality embedded at the base of the cat paw. The extension of the skeletal system allows cats to mark their territory, kill prey and gently get the attention of the ones they love.

W

hen claws are healthy, they are a thing of beauty and awe. When claws have problems, felines can become very uncomfortable to the point their posture is effected, early arthritis sets in and a sedentary lifestyle becomes a habit. The feline claw is an epidermal structure with a quick running through the middle. The claw is made up of an insoluble protein called keratin. As the keratin on the outside dies from being too far away from the blood supply, it becomes a sheath. (A sheath is a tissue structure that tightly wraps around another tissue structure.) The sheath covers the new growth of keratin that

70

surrounds the blood supply. Unlike in dogs, the outer layer of the cat’s claw (the dead keratin) sheds about every two to three months in a healthy house cat. This peeling off of the old sheath to make way for the new keratin occurs when the dead keratin is holding too tight for the new keratin to grow. A unique benefit that felines have that is different from the keratin growth found in humans and other carnivores, is the ability to retract their nails. When relaxed, a feline’s claws are retracted or snugly enclosed in the paw by dorsal ligaments. Dorsal ligaments are elastic bands of tissue.

When a feline is ready to extend the claws, the deep digital flexor muscle is used. Once the feline relaxes, the claws return to their embedded position in the paw. In the grooming environment, overgrown claws are common. As the keratin growth continues, the sheath peels off in a healthy growth cycle. This natural process continues repeatedly. Since most of the cats that come in for grooming are house cats, with or without outside time, they are not naturally wearing down their nails. When the nails are not being worn down or clipped on a regular basis, we encounter cat clients with claws that are piercing the paw pad, or have spiraled around next to the toe. In these situations, the feline did not receive the needed assistance in keeping their claws at an appropriate length. The keratin grew out of control and now human intervention is needed. There is another common claw condition that is often seen in the

Often, when this healthier nail is revealed, it is pointed and needs to be trimmed as well. grooming environment. Sometimes, especially in older cats, the nail sheath is not shed. Often, when this healthier nail is revealed, it is pointed and needs to be trimmed as well.

It can be very alarming the first time you encounter a thick sheath. Often times when your nail clippers cut the nail, the nail smashes then peels off. While it is more time consuming, it is best to peel off the old, thick covering, and if needed, clip the new slender growth underneath. If you are working on a difficult cat, you may prefer to have the client return in a week and finish the nail

trim at that time. Ingrown, curling and peeling nails are all issues related to keratin. There are other claw issues in cats that are not keratin related, including trauma, bacterial, fungal, yeast, mites, tumors, plus symptoms of other complex health issues. Any problems with the claws can cause a cat pain. Overgrowth of keratin over long periods of time can cause significant discomfort while walking, often leading to mobility issues. It is important that the overgrowth of keratin is resolved and the cat receives regular nail trims to prevent the problem from reoccurring. ✂ Deborah Hansen CFMG, CFCG is the owner of a very successful feline exclusive, house call grooming business, Kitty’s Purrfect Spa.
