THURSDAY
BRUSHER / BATHER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM By Teri DiMarino Your ability to do your job, and do it right, separates you from being "just a bather" to a position that contributes to the finished product in the salon. Teri believes that a good bath, brush and dry is 50% of a great groom. The bathing room is where most stylists started. Before future groomers begin to think of clipping coat, they must first know what to expect from the hair, and how to treat it to obtain desired results. Surprisingly, many great B/ Bs remain in the bathing room, preferring the security of knowing there will always be a need for their expert services. Bathers-in-training, "groomer wannabes", seasoned groomer techs and salon owners will benefit from this day-long program with tips on equipment and products to make the job easier. From getting the dog ready for the tub, to finding the right shampoo through proper bathing and blow-drying techniques, Teri will cover the B/B fundamentals. Safety issues and handling will be stressed.
Tools of the Trade & How to Use Them: From brushes and nail clippers, muzzles to grooming loops, Teri covers equipment basics, highlighting correct uses, in an effort to make the work easier and more comfortable for pet and bather. "These techniques and tools will make the finished groom a true work of art," says Teri. Anals and ears will be also discussed.
Dematting… It’s Not What It Used to Be Everyone has a technique for dematting a neglected pet. For some, it’s a shave-down and then entering the pelt in a Mat Contest. For others, it’s a time-consuming, hair-splitting experience, destined to take its toll on the pet, the B/B or both. Teri examines the most common and effective products, tools and techniques for the demat dilemma without getting all tangled up.
What’s in Those Bubbles??? Shampoos, Conditioners & Spray Tocopherol, Ergocalciferol, Sodium Chloride. Teri takes a "groomers-eye" view of the stuff we use every day in language we can understand. Shampoos, sprays and conditioners are our most expendable items but what do we really know to select the right product for our situation? (Those scary words are techno-speak for vitamin E, vitamin D and simple table salt, often found in many grooming products.)
Getting the Most Out of Your Bathing & Drying Time Bathing and drying are the most underestimated aspects of our jobs. Techniques can make or break a groom. The ability to properly apply products, thoroughly clean and then dry the pet will have a direct influence on the finish. You will hear about time-saving equipment and techniques.

FRIDAY
Groomer’s Business Summit: Starting Right & By Teri DiMarino Let’s face it, do we ever really know everything there is about running a business? There is always room for input, and this four–session summit will help answer some of the questions you may have about your business. From opening the doors, finding clients, hiring employees, record keeping, payroll and pricing, it is a daunting task just to keep your head above water and make a profit.
STAYING ON TRACK
Part 1) Building the Ideal Grooming Salon: (9–10 AM) This slide presentation will take you from the floor to the ceiling and wall to wall in the construction of a new, state of the art grooming salon that maximizes space and profits. Highlights will include the fine art of setting up a big salon in a small area by using labor-saving equipment, effective storage and “vertical square footage”. High visibility grooming and client comfort will be addressed, as well as some hidden aspects of salon ownership, such as seeking locations, leases, landlords and advertising.
“What are my margins?” “Am I making a profit?” “Why are my employees making more than me?” These, and a lot more questions, will be answered to help keep your salon productive and profitable. Payroll options will also be a topic of conversation in this seminar.
Part 2) The Paper Chase: (11–12 PM) Hiring and firing employees is never easy and governmental regulations require a business owner to do a lot more to keep things on the straight and narrow with the labor boards and your employees. Teri will go through some of the fine detail on the paperwork that is necessary in your business to keep you in compliance and avoid problems down the road.
Part 4) Are You an Employee or an Independent Contractor?: (4–5 PM) This has been an ongoing dilemma in the pet grooming industry for years. In an effort to avoid excessive taxation, some groomers, or employers, resort to some pretty creative employment policies. While they may solve issues in the beginning, alternative tactics can really become a huge can of worms for everybody. Teri will spell out the pros and cons, and also address the most common questions about the differences between paying commission, hourly or salary, and try to shed some light on this controversial area. This class is sure to be an eye opener on all fronts.
Part 3) Pricing, Percentages and Profits: (2–3 PM) Teri will share her business savvy and expertise on running a lucrative salon. “What do I need to consider before setting my prices?” “How do I raise my prices”

A stylish Poodle pet trim isn't as time consuming as you think with the help of snap on combs, quality shears, and some time saving tips! Poodles are one of America’s most popular breeds and every groomer sees plenty of them, but often owners think a great Poodle trim is too much maintenance. What Poodle? (2-3PM)
By Jessica Moore
Poodles are such a versatile breed, but one of their best attributes is their coat! You can literally do whatever style you want. Don't want a Poodle anymore? Turn it into a Portuguese Water Dog or Bedlington Terrier or one of my favorites, a Kerry Blue. I am sure we all have those little Toy Poodle clients that prefer the infamous "Teddy Bear" face and no shaved feet. I will go over alternative trims for Poodles and why you may want to choose one style over another depending on that individual dog's coat, conformation and lifestyle of the owners. I will take a purebred Poodle and turn it into anything but a Poodle and explain why.

Jessica Moore I know, I know, you don't handstrip. It's not for everyone and that's fine but have you ever considered a strip and clip? I love wire coated breeds, I love everything about them. I will demonstrate the benefits of mixing both techniques in a timely manner and still maintain most of the texture and color. I will also explain how I price my strip and clips differently from handstrip only dogs.

Dog Bites & on the Job Injuries
Judi Cantu–Thacker Dog bites and other injuries are common occurrences when dealing with difficult dogs. Join Judy in this one–hour seminar where she will cover everything from how to avoid injury using handling techniques and reading body language to liability and Workman’s Comp, if an injury does occur. Cat and dog bites can be more serious than we really think. Even the smallest bite can disable you for days or weeks. How do you take care of it? How do you protect yourself, your employees, and your clients? What policies and procedures should you have in place? This is a must–see seminar for owners and employees alike.
Five Steps to Perfect Puppies

Come learn five simple steps to quickly and easily train puppies for a lifetime of grooming, in the short time you have them on your table. You will love grooming puppies after this!
SATURDAY Everyday Dogs Judi Cantu–Thacker

Judi will discuss and demonstrate how to determine the best pet trims for your clients while maintaining a breed profile with a little flare.
A Groomer's Guide to Working & Herding Group Dogs
Jennifer Bishop–Jenkins How did Working and Herding Group dogs contribute to the development of modern human economic systems? What grooming techniques are right for these large, intelligent dogs with the natural, often heavy coats? Their grooms and coat types are diverse, far beyond their "Bath/Brush" only stereotype. This session will reveal the origin of all 7 groups of dog breeds, with special focus on the Working and Herding group dogs, and will help any groomer, from beginner to master,
categorize coat types and learn the best strategies to groom each type. Learn what grooming tools and techniques are best suited for each coat type. This workshop will describe, breed by breed, the specific grooming needs of all the breeds and coat types in these two groups, while addressing the controversy and explaining the correct care of the most common and natural of all dog coat types; the double coat.

and demonstrate techniques to achieve that continuous, rounded profile of this truly beautiful breed. The seminar will finish off with a demonstration of the "tricks" to achieve the round, devilish expression of the Bichon Frise head.
Heads & Tails, Both Are Important Jessica Moore I am all about balance and blending, even in a simple shave down. Believe it or not a shaved down dog can be made to look worse by a badly balanced head and tail. Whether the dog had to be shaved due to owner neglect or the client just likes the dog short, we should still do our best to make them look their best. I will demonstrate how just a slight change in a few details can make or break the groom. Yes, even on a shave down. I will show you how to still achieve cute and easy.

To top it all off, Blake will demonstrate how to naturally groom a cat’s face so that your "bath cats" leave looking fiercer than ever before. This is key to separate your service from every other service around!
This comprehensive seminar covers everything a groomer needs to know about pet teeth, ears, and eyes. Mary will discuss the anatomy, possible injuries, and what to look for as a groomer, as well as add–on services that can be offered. For dental, she will share the importance of a home dental program, the stages of periodontal disease, and the difference between manual and ultrasonic cleanings.
