STAFF/CONTINUING EDUCATION

Lynne Swanson Dogs communicate using posture, positions, movement and energy, and they interpret our posture, positions, movement and energy (in quality as well as quantity) in the context of their species. Got a few reactive dogs? Let Lynne show you how simple changes in your posture, position, movement and energy can soothe their rumbly souls. Got stressed dogs, cage-sharks or dogs that pull on their leashes? She can help you there, too, in positive and proactive ways. In this four-hour, three-part seminar, you will learn canine social cues, team-building (both canine and human) and helpful leash skills. Lynne will discuss practices that set dogs (and their owners) up for success from day one/minute one and our favorite routine for introducing dogs to one another and to people, too. It all starts with good communication and an appreciation of the attributes that make a dog a dog! This program is four hours long on Wednesday November 13th from 9 PM – 6 PM (with breaks)

During this seminar Dr. Seitz will cover terminology, a brief history of cannabis, the Science of CBD and conclude with a CBD legal brief. If you have questions about the value of CBD, if it’s something you should consider carrying for your customers, how you find reliable products in a field of fake items, the significance of poor oral absorption, sourcing, extraction methods, the entourage effect, what marijuana toxicosis looks like, differences between CBD & THC, and/or desire an understanding regarding the legal landscape surrounding CBD, then this seminar is for you. This program is one hour long on Thursday November 14th from 9 AM – 10 AM

DETERMINING PUPPY BREATH to COMPATIBILITY FOR PLAYGROUPS: 1ST DAY & BEYOND

SILVER SENIORS:

Sara Beth Pinson

OPTIMIZING CARE FROM BEGINNING TO END Sara Beth Pinson

One of the most important and also intimidating aspects of providing group social play is deciding which dogs are and are not a good fit for daycare During this seminar, Sarah Beth will provide you the tools to determine compatibility for social play and confidently communicate expectations and decisions to pet owners so you feel empowered to provide comprehensive compatibility evaluations at your own facility. Some specific topics covered include, shaping a pet owner’s relationship with your business starting with the first day evaluation, creating a system to observe, describe, and categorize behaviors in order to objectively evaluate compatibility for group social play, and communicating observations and recommendations to pet owners so that they support and understand your decisions.

It is a special privilege to be able to care for a dog at both ends of their life, especially considering how we share in the responsibility of setting them up for success as a puppy and allowing them to fade with dignity as a senior. In this seminar, Sarah Beth will discuss the challenges and benefits of providing daycare for young puppies and share recommendations on how you can shape your relationship with a new puppy client to extend for the life of their pet. We will then celebrate the joy (and sadness) of caring for pets as they age and offer ideas for alternative and add-on services to ensure that senior pets continue to be enriched. We will also discuss how to support pet owners through the challenges of puppyhood as well as declining health, including how to share in grief while also remembering a life well-lived.

FINANCIAL

LABOR I: THE IMMEDIATE

& LONG-TERM IMPACT

OF LABOR COSTS ON YOUR BUSINESS Teija Heikkila, Laura Laaman & Jake Romero Labor costs are increasing rapidly, causing pet care facilities to struggle with profitability and value more than ever before. This session is the first of a three-part series focusing solely on this one critical expense: How to Measure, Control, and Reduce Payroll. Part 1 provides key performance indicators for labor expense and its impact on the immediate profitability of your business as well as its long-term value. We’ll examine different business models by providing real life examples while helping you analyze your own business. Part 1 sets the stage for the rest of this timely series and is a highly recommended if you plan to attend Parts 2 and 3. This program is two hours long on Tuesday November 12th from 9 AM – 11 AM

TO SELL OR STAY?

THE MILLION-DOLLAR QUESTION Teija Heikkila

This session is a concentrated version of Teija’s highly successful Symposium! This intense, hands-on seminar will help you look at your business in a different way, giving you clarity when your business is at its peak to be sold for maximum value. Attendees will learn about the various types of buyers on the market, what makes a business most attractive, and what buyers tend to shy away from. We’ll cover the following items: • What Is My Business Worth? • The Top 3 Value Enhancers • The Top 3 Value Reducers • Seller-owned Real Estate vs. a Leased Space • Staffing and its Impact on Sale • When is the Right Time to Sell? This is a must–attend seminar for any business owner, regardless of how long you’ve been in business and whether you’re ready to sell now or not for years. Becoming a millionaire takes planning, and this seminar is the place to start. For owners only, no managers or staff please. This program is four hours long on Tuesday November 12th from 1 PM – 5 PM

FINANCIAL

LABOR II: LABOR III: REDUCING YOUR LABOR COSTS

Jake Romero

RETAIN GREAT STAFF AND

REDUCE TURNOVER

Labor is the single biggest expense for a pet care facility. When managed properly, it can result in an efficient, top-quality, and highly profitable business. On the other hand, poorly managed labor leads to the inefficiency and high labor costs that can kill a pet care business. Too many pet care facility owners just look at the bottom-line total labor cost, not realizing that one area of the business is way overstaffed—or worse, losing money. In this seminar, we’ll discuss proven ways to reduce your labor costs while running the most efficient and profitable business possible. It is recommended that you attend the Labor I session if planning to attend Labor II or II sessions.

Turnover is typically the number one reason for high payroll cost, and in today’s tight labor market, facility owners struggle with retaining employees who often leave at a moment’s notice. This affects a business’ ability to grow, provide high-quality of care and is taxing on managers and owners. In this session Teija will provide tangible takeaways on how to retain & grow the employees you spend time and money on training, and stop the leaking of good talent. Special points will be discussed regarding the millennials and their approach to employment. It is recommended that you attend the Labor I & II sessions if planning to attend the Labor III session.

This program is one hour long on Wednesday November 13th from 9 AM – 10 AM

This program is two hours long on Wednesday November 13th from 4 PM – 6 PM

Joe Zuccarello

Laura Laaman Competition in the pet care industry has grown rapidly—but so has opportunity. In this vital seminar, Laura Laaman shares some of her proven insights that have helped hundreds of pet care facilities increase their revenues by tens of millions of dollars. You’ll discover these powerful and proven steps toward realizing record-breaking revenues in your business. This program is one hour long on Wednesday November 13th from 2 PM – 3 PM

FINANCIAL

AVOID PREDICTABLE

LABOR LAWSUITS Conrad Shawn Kee

Unfortunately, labor-related lawsuits are at an all-time high. Pet care facility owners may be innocently making decisions that are noncompliant with current labor laws. This powerful seminar will give pet care facilities a checklist of the most timely and costly areas as well as tools to protect their business and profits. This program is one hour long on Thursday November 14th from 9 AM – 10 AM

Competition in the pet care industry is fiercer and more diverse than ever. App–based providers, new brick & mortar facilities, and flashy corporate companies are aggressively trying to lure your customers away. If you have been in business for several years, feel you’re outgrowing your space, have a waiting list on holidays but not year–round, lost clients to competition, or have an older, “traditional” kennel—this is the session for you. We’ll examine the best ways to grow and expand (with or without increasing physical space), how to know when the time is right, and how to finance your new growth. This program is one hour long on Thursday November 14th from 11 AM – 12 PM

FINANCIAL

Teija Heikkila & Laura Laaman

This program is one hour long on Thursday November 14th from 2 PM – 3 PM

Did you know that not all revenues are created equal? This fast-paced, interactive session covers all services offered by pet care facilities and breaks them down from the most desirable to least profitable revenue streams. We’ll discuss the pros & cons of all income and determine the right mix to increase profitability and business value, as well as how to change it up if your mix is lopsided.
