PET BOARDING CERTIFICATION

TUESDAY SEMINARS

Professional Pet Boarding Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Certification with Laura Laaman, Dr. Robert Duquette & Claire Ellington Canine Cough and Canine Influenza are now common occurrences in most pet care facilities. In fact, they’re nearly as common as the common cold in human daycares. This certification course has the most up to date information and is designed for pet care facility owners, managers, and staff to educate them on the causes, prevention and treatment of these illnesses, as well as how to respond to an outbreak.

CERTIFIED

C E R T I F I C A T I ON

Causes of Bordetella, Parainfluenza, Adenovirus, and Influenza will be explored, and attendees will learn about the transmission and symptoms of each. A look into how veterinarians diagnose and treat these diseases will help attendees identify and understand them, and also learn about the different vaccine types, their effectiveness, and the latest facility disinfection protocols. Outbreak response & management will also be covered, and attendees will learn what to do when there are active cases of these diseases in their communities, how to respond to an outbreak in their facilities, and learn the best prevention methods as well as how & when to contact veterinarians and pet parents. Valuable handouts will be provided, including: How, when, and why to notify pet parents when a disease is confirmed in your area or facility, Canine Cough handouts for pet parents and employees, Canine Flu handouts for pet parents and employees, Daily cleaning & disinfecting charts, and Outbreak response protocols. At the end of the course you will receive directions on how to complete the test and receive the certificate for this course, which will be done online. Designing Your Doggie Day staffing ratios, cleaning systems, to your business growth and even construction materials, design and ruin your reputation. Join Jamie Care – Greg Taylor, Robin

Bennett & Susan Briggs Doggie daycare has become an important part of the pet boarding business. This is a change from 10, and certainly 15 years ago when daycare was not popular and difficult to find. The vast majority of pet resorts being built today incorporate doggie daycare and older facilities are redesigning or adding on to offer the service. It is an attractive way to add additional revenue and build tighter bonds with customers. This presentation will focus on what issues to think about when building a daycare area in a facility. Daycare design expert, Greg Taylor will team up with “The Dog Gurus”, Robin Bennett and Susan Briggs to cover space requirements, flooring options,

more. The audience will have time Migdal as she offers best practices at the end to ask questions. on staff on-boarding and education.

The Elephant in the Room: Educating & Retaining Staff – Jamie Migdal

The pet industry is huge, recession-proof, and attracts people from all walks of life looking to turn their passion for pets into a business. But when they get there, they find out that managing a staff is really hard. Their employees are often part-time, entry level, and have no formal pet care education. And without the right tools and training made specifically for the pet industry, business owners can experience up to 100% annual staff turnover. The constant upheaval of always needing to find and train new staff can put a screeching halt

Total Integration: Mastering the Management of Business – Eric Beck

In this hands–on workshop & round table, we will help you refine and produce strategic procedures to enhance the management of the most important aspects of your facility: People, Money, and Facility with the following focus areas: Managing & Hiring for Performance (including millennials), Growing Managers and Team Leaders, Developing Motivational Goals, and Automating Effective Facility Management Strategies. You’ll hear from facility owners at the top of their game— their challenges and solutions!

TUESDAY SEMINARS Ask the Experts: Everything You Wanted to Know About Opening a Pet Resort Part 1 with Greg Taylor, Al Locker, Mitch Tisher, Nancy Webb, & Lon Brewer

?

Part 2 with Mel Forbes, Annette Uda, Ken Karmie and John Sturgess Opening a pet resort involves a LOT of decisions. There are many areas of expertise an owner must master and make evaluations on: kennels, grooming, cleaning, financing, floors, design, etc. This seminar will be divided into two parts. The first part will be approximately 2½ hours and will focus on helping prospective new owners, or existing owners looking to remodel, learn the short cuts, rules of thumb and cheat codes on some of the primary areas of concern when undertaking these projects. Attendees will leave knowing what type of credit score they require for a loan, what to expect when applying for an SBA guarantee, pros and cons of different flooring options and their location on the price curve, cleaning systems, best drain location and design, how much kennel and cattery equipment costs, most common sizes and ways to maximize revenue in your buildings footprint, and many other pieces of information the presenters have learned over many years and facilities.

The presenters will include Greg Taylor with Mason Company; the leading designer and manufacturer of animal enclosures, Al Locker with Turnkey; a design–build–consulting firm focusing on pet care facilities, Mitch Tisher with Spray Master Technology; the leading commercial power cleaning company for animal care and other markets, Nancy Webb with Gulf Coast Bank; who specializes in financing pet care facilities, and Lon Brewer with Permatek Coatings; the only resinous (epoxy) floor firm focused on animal care.

The last 90 minutes will be devoted to Q&A with a panel of experts. The presenters from Part 1 will be joined by other authorities on cleaning and disinfecting, artificial grass, and UV light as a disinfectant. In addition, the panel will include some pet resort owners who have built multiple facilities. The experts will include Mel Forbes from Health Technologies, Annette Uda from PetAirapy, Ken Karmie from Foreverlawn, and John Sturgess with ADOGO Pet Hotels. This will allow the audience to ask more specific questions or inquire on topics not covered earlier by the experts.

Heroes for Healthy Pets — Dr. Courtney Campbell The Heroes for Healthy Pets Certification in Infectious Disease Management is a program sponsored by Barkleigh Productions, The International Boarding and Pet Services Association, National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), and Pet Sitters, International. The Heroes for Healthy Pet’s Certification is open to all pet and veterinary professionals. To become certified, both modules must be completed and the certification examination must be passed. Part 1: Understanding Infectious Disease: This seminar will discuss common transmissible diseases of dogs, including pathogens of CIRDC (canine infectious respiratory disease complex—including dog flu), Leptospirosis, Parvo, and Distemper. The lecture will give an overview of the incidence rate, how to recognize the clinical signs of illness

and how to recognize signs of illness in dogs, and prevention. Management of outbreaks in group environments such as kennels and doggie daycares and options for prevention, including vaccination and sanitation protocols will also be discussed. Part 2: Effective Infectious Disease Control: To remain competitive in this market, pet professional businesses must keep their pet owners happy and this means keeping pets healthy. In 2016, leading experts on infectious disease developed a consensus statement to recommend best practices for pet care and safety for pet professional businesses such as kennels, veterinary facilities, doggie daycares, dog walkers, groomers, and training facilities. This program covers the topic of best practices of sanitation and prevention of infectious disease spread.

TUESDAY SEMINARS Understanding & Evaluating Your K9 Clients – Laura Pakis In this two part seminar, you will learn how to read dog body language and then apply that to your temperament testing/evaluations for daycare and boarding dogs. Hour 1) How to “Speak” Dog: Ever wonder about a dog’s behavior and whether it is or isn’t appropriate? A wagging tail may not always indicate a friendly dog. Dogs are very expressive animals. They communicate when they're feeling happy, sad, nervous, fearful and angry, and they use their faces and bodies to convey much of this information. Dog body language is an elaborate and sophisticated system of nonverbal communication that, fortunately, we can learn to recognize. By the end of this workshop you will be able to “read” a dog’s changes in body postures and facial expressions and know their feelings and intentions toward other dogs in your care. We’ll even throw in some body language you can do to let the dog know you’re their friend.

Hour 2) The Why's & How's of Temperament Testing: A dog's temperament is

essentially the dog's general attitude toward people and other animals, and is a result of both inherited and environmental factors. Temperament testing evaluates an individual dog's temperament through a series of tests that measure traits including stability, confidence, shyness, friendliness, aggressiveness, protectiveness, prey instincts, play drive, and self-defense instincts, and ability to distinguish between threatening and nonthreatening situations. During this workshop you will learn the guidelines for temperament testing, the reasons for performing them as well as how to accomplish a temperament test on a dog.

How to Add Enrichment in Your Facility: Games, Activities & Skill Building for Daycare Dogs

– Teena Patel Behavioral wellness is extremely important in the dogs that we care for, but many facilities are stumped about exactly how they can add more individual enrichment activities to already busy daily schedules. Thankfully, there are simple ways for you to work dogs one-on-one and in very small groups. Offering skill building classes is a great way to prepare dogs for daycare while diversifying your business. It's also an ideal first-step toward offering enrichment at your facility. This individualized focus prepares dogs for a successful transition into more regular daycare attendance, because they'll already have the skills and knowledge required to thrive. Attendees will learn about far more than games and activities - focusing on how to create a program that teaches skills like impulse control and emotional stability. Skill building helps employees, too. Attendees will learn how to train their team (including new hires) in canine skill building using a systematized and targeted approach to advancing dog daycare. Teena will also provide a step-by-step guide on how to add more enrichment activities to your facility. This isn't about group play; you'll learn how to do more with individual dogs, and Teena will demonstrate and explain various activities, games, and exercises that you can use in your business. She'll also cover how to build and use your own activity kits so that the dogs you're caring for can exercise their bodies and their minds. You'll walk away with concrete, actionable ideas that can be implemented at your own facility.

WEDNESDAY SEMINARS Quiet Dog Daycare Workshop

– Laurie Wagner Calm the crazy, build up the timid, and reduce barking, jumping, humping & marking. This four-hour, three part program is designed to help dog professionals help & retain more dogs—and make more money! Part 1) Through the Dog’s Eyes: This interactive session provides a unique insight into the dog’s perspective and will be an eye–opening change to the way you interact with dogs. If you want to prevent dog bites, you need to learn—and be able to teach your staff how the dogs see you. Part 2) Can You Speak Dog?: Dogs are primal creatures and to deny that is foolish. You could spend time teaching individual dogs how to understand human language (traditional obedience training) or you can take the time and initiative to learn their language. In this session, you will learn the keys to understanding what they’re trying to tell us and what messages our body language is sending to them. Our movements are telling them things—don’t you want to know what message is being sent? Part 3) Blending in The Fringe: In this two–hour session, you will learn the process of slowing down the bold and bringing out the timid. This system will allow you to keep/ better manage the problem dogs, therefore making more money. This session will include Laurie’s “Daycare Rules” for humans, as well as what good play looks/ sounds like, hiring processes that work, what their pre–eval & eval process looks like, and what their policies are to ensure a safe environment for dogs & staff.

Your Moment! Design, Achieve, Sustain

– John Sturgess In this session you will learn how to follow a well-designed process to achieve your goals, design and champion your business process, achieve success by engaging and empowering your team to build a winning culture, and grow and sustain your business. You will walk away with an understanding of empowering yourself and engaging your professional teams to maximize your efforts to achieve your goals.

Your Client Acquisition Process: Will You Thrive?

– Laura Laaman Even the best businesses lose clients each year. Why? Pet parents move, no longer need your services, or are lured away by your competition. The most successful business owners understand this and recognize it as an opportunity for growth. If you’re not totally confident that your company consistently turns phone calls, facility tours, and internet leads into reservations, this seminar will change the way you view your business. This is a seminar not to be missed!

You’ll learn best practices when adding or expanding boarding to your practice, the advantages and disadvantages of the most popular dog and cat enclosure systems used for boarding, how to prevent cross-contamination issues between kennels and how to create a stress-free environment for cats, as well as acquire knowledge of what a typical kennel or cottage costs. It is also valuable for any veterinarian working with animal shelters or in any environment where animal housing may present safety or disease

contamination concerns. RACE, AIA, CES approved.

Preventing Respiratory Infectious Disease in Pet Care Facilities

– Annette Uda “I’m requiring the vaccines. I’m doing the cleaning. Why am I still having outbreaks?” Dog flu, canine cough, and other airborne respiratory infectious diseases can shut down a facility for weeks—and impact your business reputation indefinitely. Even if you have vaccine and surface cleaning protocols in place, you’re still missing a key prevention aspect—cleaning the air.
