welcome letter
It’s been almost one year since I started as the Executive Director at Grounds For Sculpture, and what an exciting year it’s been. As many of you know, the Seward Johnson Retrospective Exhibition which opened last May brought record crowds to the park. It has been extended through this spring. In the fall, we opened a monumental exhibition of work by Michael Graves entitled Past as Prologue, which spans 50 years of humanistic design, architecture, and art from this modern master. As a perfect counterpoint to Past as Prologue, our 20th annual student award exhibition, presented in partnership with the International Sculpture Center, is a glimpse into the future of contemporary art. These exhibitions are currently on view and I encourage you to make the time to see them. You will not be disappointed. Our new Education Center will open in early spring, providing additional workshop and classroom space. Jae Ko, an awardwinning Korean-born artist who works with huge pallets of paper, will begin her most ambitious installation yet. There will be several opportunities to view the process as it unfolds—and we’re delighted to be able to offer these behind-the-scenes views. We are also offering numerous ways
to engage more deeply with the Past as Prologue exhibition, including the first ever GFS Product Design Challenge (read more about it on page 18). Michael Graves himself will select winners for a special award. There’s also Film for Thought, a new Sunday Matinee series, and plenty of other things to do indoors when it’s cold outside. I am continually impressed by the dedication of our board members, volunteers, and staff, and by the energy and vision of our founder, Seward Johnson. And I am grateful to you, our community of guests, members, supporters, and business partners. Your thoughtful comments, your pride in this place, your patronage, and your philanthropy all help to sustain Grounds For Sculpture. We are so glad you are part of it, and I thank you personally for your continued support.

survey: how are we doing? The guest experience is something we think about a lot. And because it’s so important to us, we continually evaluate what we do and how we could do it better. We invite you to participate in a brief 10-question survey to help us understand whether this event guide is a valuable informational tool and how it might be improved. Take the survey by visiting groundsforsculpture.org/survey. Thank you!

This is a unique opportunity to learn the stories behind Michael Graves’ architecture and products from the master himself. The Robert Schirmer Professor of Architecture, Emeritus at Princeton University, Graves has practiced architecture since 1964. Notable buildings of his include the Portland Building, the Swan and Dolphin Hotels at Walt Disney World, and the Newark Museum. In addition to architecture, Graves launched the Michael Graves Design Group, which designs functional products for everyday use from teapots to toasters. His firm has put an emphasis on what he calls “intuitive design,” meaning the function of well-designed product should be apparent. This artist talk is not to be missed! Seats are limited for this special engagement; advance purchase recommended! $5 per person. Park admission is not included in the cost of this event, and will be charged upon arrival.

Demonstrations will be led by the instructor, who will also incorporate personal instruction, constructive group critiques, and some outdoor painting exercises, weather permitting. Students can choose to work in watercolor, oil, or acrylic. A complete materials list will be provided upon registration; participants will need to provide their own materials. Instructor: Joe Gyurcsak. $180 Members; $195 non-Members.

“FILM FOR THOUGHT” SERIES
Free with park admission
Sunday Matinees at GFS! This pioneer film series features unique and specially curated selections as a compliment to the Michael Graves: Past as Prologue exhibition. Held indoors, the 3-installment series of documentary film offers a thought-provoking look at product design, architecture, and architectural photography. Following the film, share your thoughts during audience dialogue lead by experts in the field! Seating is limited to 50 guests for these intimate special engagements. We highly recommend reserving your seat in advance. This can be done online or by phone (609-586-0616, x. 243).
OBJECTIFIED Sunday, March 8, 3pm Dialogue with Donald Strum, Senior VP of Product Design, Michael Graves Design Group Objectified explores the complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s about the ground-breaking designers who re-examine, re-evaluate, and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?
VISUAL ACOUSTICS: THE MODERNISM OF JULIUS SHULMAN Sunday, March 15, 3pm Dialogue with James Leynse, Architectural/Corporate Photographer, James Lensye Photography Visual Acoustics celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Frank Gehry. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with unforgettable images. Sunday, March 22, 3pm Dialogue with Belmont Freeman, FAIA, Belmont Freeman Architects and Adjunct Associate Professor, Columbia University, GSAPP In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara to create Cuba’s National Art Schools on the grounds of a former golf course in Havana, Cuba. Their radical architectural designs became the inspirational home to dancers, musicians, and artists from all over the country. But as the dream of the Revolution quickly became a reality, construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate. Forty years later, the schools are in use but remain unfinished and decaying. Castro has invited the exiled architects back to finish their unrealized dream.

Scattered throughout the landscape are more than 250 contemporary sculptures from both world-renowned and local artists. The interplay of art and nature is at its best at GFS! Located on land that was the former NJ State Fairgrounds, GFS has three recently-refurbished fairgrounds buildings dating from the 1920s, which are beautiful architectural and historic landmarks adorned with decorative terracotta tiles. A sense of whimsy permeates this landscape, where peacocks roam freely among the art and visitors. Beautiful in every season, GFS is certain to provide painterly inspiration in spring! Visitors will be invited to observe artists at work! Pre-registration is requested. Registration is exclusively through the Arts Council of Princeton.
