When I started this past spring as the Executive Director at Grounds For Sculpture, I could not have imagined a more exciting time to join the dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and board members here. My deepest thanks to all for the warm welcome I received. With the enthusiasm and support of our community, I look forward to entering this next chapter and expanding our role as a vital resource in the region. And I look forward to the many opportunities presented in this guide to hear directly from you. We come into the summer season featuring our most ambitious and well-attended exhibition in our history, Seward Johnson: The Retrospective, which celebrates the work and vision of our founder. Visitors are greeted in our spacious new Welcome Center which includes enhanced visitor amenities—delicious French-inspired fare at Van Gogh Café, an enticing new Museum Shop, expanded gallery space, and a beautiful new lounge just for members. The momentum continues into the fall season as we celebrate internationally renowned New Jersey-based architect Michael Graves. The exhibition Michael Graves: Past as Prologue coincides with the 50th anniversary of his design firm and provides a unique opportunity to explore

the fascinating connections between sculpture, design, and architecture. Complementing these exhibitions is a rich variety of ways to explore, create, reflect, learn, unwind, and connect deeply with friends old and new. The garden setting provides a lush backdrop for our many concerts and dance performances and is a wonderful venue for milestone family occasions or to simply enjoy a meal and relaxed stroll. Our hands-on artist workshops, demonstrations, and intimate artist salons provide a chance to delve into the artistic process and meet artists first-hand. Your participation as a guest, member, supporter, volunteer, or business partner plays an invaluable part in sustaining Grounds For Sculpture and helps us present exhibitions, care for the grounds and permanent collection, and enhance our programs for children and adults. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of our guests, Grounds For Sculpture has a maximum capacity of 2,500 visitors at any one time. Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Seward Johnson Retrospective exhibition, please be aware that there may be times when the park is at capacity and we cannot admit further guests. Please note that this is more likely to occur on weekends when the weather is favorable. Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully sited on landscaped parkland full of exotic trees and flowers. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin.

spring/summer 2014 exhibition Seward Johnson: The Retrospective On view through September 21, 2014 Featuring more than 160 sculptures by artist and GFS founder Seward Johnson, The Retrospective includes work in three indoor galleries and many new works out in the park, including the much-anticipated monumental land sculpture titled, The Awakening, sited in The Meadow. Joining his internationally admired large-scale works such as Forever Marilyn are dozens of key works comprising the Icons Revisited, Beyond The Frame, and Celebrating The Familiar series. These notable sculptures are joined by Mr. Johnson’s lesser known but perhaps most intimate work—a collection of trays upon which he has painted landscapes and moments of great personal meaning. Seward Johnson: The Retrospective represents nearly 50 years of work and is a culmination of the prodigious whimsy and humanity of this extraordinary man.

fall/winter 2014/2015 exhibitions Michael Graves: Past as Prologue October 18, 2014 to April 5, 2015 Michael Graves is renowned internationally as one of the world’s leading architects, artists, and designers. He is the winner of numerous awards and distinctions, including the National Medal of Arts. Graves’work has been exhibited and widely published, and his drawings, paintings and objects have found permanent homes in museums and private collections around the world.

Michael Graves: Past as Prologue will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his firm and five decades of visionary work. The exhibition will feature a tour through seminal architecture and product design projects, as well as a display of Graves’ sculptures and paintings. On display in the Museum and Domestic Arts Buildings and organized chronologically, Past as Prologue gives visitors the opportunity to start in 1964 and move forward through time or begin at present day and go back. Whether viewed in either direction, Graves’ personal design philosophy and the core values of his practice connect all of the work. International Sculpture Center’s 20th Annual student award Exhibition Oct. 18, 2014 to April 5, 2015 Always innovative and impressive, the ISC and GFS collaborative exhibition in the Domestic Arts Building features exceptional work by undergraduate and graduate student artists, recommended by their professors. Reflections: Creative Works by the Matheny Arts Access Artists

Don’t miss the fifth annual exhibition featuring artwork by Grounds For Sculpture members. In addition to supporting the arts, many GFS members are gifted artists. This exhibition showcases the unique inspirations and diverse creative perspectives of our membership. This year’s juror, Kelly Baum, is the Haskell Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Princeton University Art Museum. She has been working as a curator and scholar for almost fifteen years and has organized several exhibitions, including New Jersey as Non-Site, for which she received a Warhol Curatorial Research Fellowship. Sept. 21 – Nov. 2, 2014 This multi-disciplinary exhibition will feature paintings, sculptures, short films, and written work by artists from the Arts Access Program at Matheny Medical and Educational Center. Regardless of their disabilities, participants are able to create artwork with the assistance of neutral facilitators. Accompanied by each artist’s biography, the works will offer unique insight into the artist’s point of view.

Creations from GFS Workshops Nov. 15 – Dec. 14, 2014 View a selection of handmade pieces created during workshops at Grounds For Sculpture. The Associate Dean and Assistant Professor of Mason Gross School of the Arts will discuss how approaches to art education are shaping the next generation of artists and the future of visual arts. A new trend in poetry has emerged and is gaining popularity – EKPHRASIS is defined as “a rhetorical device in which one medium of art tries to relate another medium by defining and describing its essence and form, and in doing so, communicating more directly to the audience, through its illuminative liveliness.” Community members are invited to visit our current exhibition, Seward Johnson: The Retrospective, and use it as inspiration. Compose an original ekphrastic poem based on a work in this exhibition and submit it for jurying by the GFS Volunteer Committee. Selected works will be featured in our commemorative booklet and each selected poet will be invited to read their chosen work during our August Poets’ Invitational. Before the Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre performance, take part in a traditional Mexican folk art by making your own Calaveras box. Gain inspiration for creating your own ornament by watching artists of different styles craft three unique holiday ornaments. Then enter your own ornament in the second annual Grounds For Sculpture holiday ornament contest. Featured artists are Georgina McGarvey, Kathy Metaxas, and Margareta Warlick. Guests interested in entering our contest can pick up a free ornament kit following the demonstration.

Personalize your very own oversized holiday ornament! GFS will supply you with a transparent ornamental orb in exchange for your unique take on how one of our current exhibiting artists inspired you! Give us your own perspective by creating an ornament that somehow reflects a work of art on exhibit here this season. Enter it into our second annual “Have a Ball!” Contest where GFS patrons will vote on their favorites and you can win special GFS prizes.

hello holidays (NOV. 29 & 30) Start your holiday season at GFS! Join us for two days of merriment just after Thanksgiving. Saturday, Nov. 29, 12 – 5pm Make your own unique holiday gift box or create a one-of-a-kind holiday snow shaker (like a snow globe without the water!). Be there for the award ceremonies of our “Have a Ball!” Contest and warm up with songs of the holidays. Don’t miss the opportunity to shop for that special someone at the new Museum Shop. Sunday, Nov. 30, 11am-6pm From 11am – 2pm, enjoy traditional brunch favorites and pair your favorite brunch item with one of the Peacock Cafés made-to-order peppermint hot chocolates or spiked hot apple cider. Then, view the “Have A Ball!” contest winners and attend our Holiday Tea Party from 4-6pm, where you can savor your own pot of tea while snacking on delicious cookies, finger sandwiches, and other delights. Westminster Concert Bell Choir Friday, Dec. 5, 7:30pm Back by demand! We’re pleased to present the wildly popular Westminster Bell Choir in its only community holiday performance of the season! Hailed for its virtuosity, the ensemble performs on the largest range of hand bells in the world–8 octaves– creating an astonishing array of harmonies to delight all ages! Please join us for a very special evening celebrating this spirited musical tradition. $15 Members; $20 non-Members. Advance ticket purchase includes park admission throughout the day. young artist workshops: design style!

The Art and Science of Architectural Sketching

Sat., Dec. 6 & 13, 10am -1pm In this two-day workshop, participants will discover how to create the illusion of threedimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. Students will be introduced to the principles of linear perspective and how to apply these techniques in sketching architectural structures. Brief lectures and several demos will be given by Patrick Connors, who has taught at the Institute of Classical Art and Architecture in New York City. For the beginner, this is a useful introductory drawing course and will serve as advancement for drawers with more experience. Participants will create several hands-on sketching exercises during this workshop. Instructor: Patrick Connors. $125 Members; $135 non-Members. To register, please call (609) 586-0616.

Adult Workshop

Join us for fun-filled children’s workshops based on design! Finished artworks make great holiday gifts! $12 Members; $18 nonMembers. Materials fee is per session, per child. Students who pre-register will receive free admission on the day of the workshop (a $10 value!). To register in advance, call (609) 586-0616. These classes fill up fast! Funky Building Sculptures (ages 6-12) Artists ages 6-12 will construct their own colorful and funky building sculptures. Students will explore the architecture of Michael Graves for inspiration then create a wire armature for their building. After wrapping the armatures in colorful paper, students can go wild decorating the outside of their sculptures. Instructor: April Zay. Tubular Structures (ages 12 and up) Artists ages 12+ will explore basic architecture concepts including design, planning, connections, and joints. Then, using colorful paper tubes, students will build an architectural sculpture of their own design. All that is needed to create an original work of art is creativity! Instructor: Ruthann Perry.

Dressed in turn-of-the-century costumes, an ensemble of singers will perform vintage holiday music – from delightful English carol settings to original earthy American holiday songs. Countless vocal arrangements will bring the joy and warmth of the season into people’s hearts. Boheme Opera has a special surprise in store so don’t miss this annual treat!!

Holiday Cookie Decorating Sunday, Dec. 14, 4 – 6pm A festive and delicious workshop! We’ll arm you with sugar cookies and fun, sparkly embellishments for decorating. Bring your edible art home to enjoy with your favorite cup of tea or to show off to your friends and family! This popular annual favorite sells out quickly so register early! Latin Night: The “hottest” night of the year

Rat’s Annual Clam Bake Thursday, July 3, Seatings at 5pm & 8pm Start your Fourth of July weekend early with this extremely popular evening. Dinner and a Stroll Tuesday – Thursday, July & Aug., 5 – 7pm Back by popular demand!!! The perfect mid-week reason to visit Grounds For Sculpture! In the months of July and August, guests can enjoy the park (admission included) and a three-course prix-fixe meal at Rat’s Restaurant for $44/ person. Rat’s Comedy Night Friday, Nov. 14, 8:30pm Local comic celebrity Helene Angley returns for another night of raucous laughs!
