At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully sited on landscaped parkland full of exotic trees and flowers. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin.

They join the enchanting works of our visionary founder Seward Johnson and many others by the finest up and coming artists of our time. GFS is recognized for its dedication to designing accessible facilities and programs. The Domestic Arts Building, Welcome Center, and Seward Johnson Center for the Arts are fully accessible as is the Museum Building’s main level. Power-assisted doors are installed in our galleries and Welcome Center. Large-print editions of information and brochures are available, as are assisted-listening devices for tours and lectures. Vehicles for persons with mobility impairments are available throughout the week (reservations recommended) on a first-come, first-served basis. MEET OUR HORTICULTURALIST In addition to the outstanding collection of contemporary sculpture for which it is best known, Grounds For Sculpture has long been a favorite with garden groups, horticulture enthusiasts, and those with a natural affinity for the outdoors. With its lush and verdant landscape, abundant native and exotic cultivars, and continual growth and evolution, each visit to the park is unique. Seward Johnson envisioned a place where art and nature intersect. That vision was realized over the last 25 years in collaboration with landscape architect Brian Carey of AC/ BC Associates and GFS Facilities Director/ Project Manager Bruce Daniels as the park grew from its original 12 acre parcel to its current 42 acre site. In response to a growing desire (and demand!) for more garden-related activities and education, in late 2014, GFS created a Horticulturist position and hired Michael Strengari. Among Michael’s many responsibilities are hands-on caring for specimens in the garden and

directing the care and maintenance of the landscape, overseeing the team of master gardeners, working with curators and artists for sculpture installation, and giving horticulture tours to our guests (in addition to less glamorous things like investigating plant disease when it arises). We are pleased to welcome Michael to the GFS family and encourage you to explore the park with him. Michael’s horticulture career began in 2007 with an internship for internationally acclaimed garden designer, Michael Petrie’s Handmade Gardens. Upon the internship conclusion, he accepted a full-time Gardener

and Design Assistant position with Petrie, continuing to work in some of the finest residential gardens in the Philadelphia region and participating in five award-winning Philadelphia Flower Show installations. He is a recent graduate of Longwood Gardens’ Professional Gardener Program, a two-year hands-on intensive program which included working in every public garden department, representing Longwood Gardens at national and international events, and completing rigorous coursework. Michael lives in Langhorne, PA, and has volunteered at Chanticleer Gardens and Delaware Center for Horticulture.

Jae Ko: Selections, featuring Force of Nature, Shiro in the domestic arts building and east gallery Washington, DC based sculptor Jae Ko has transformed the East Gallery with her monumental paper relief sculpture. Spanning more than 80 linear feet, Ko turned the sculptural into the architectural by rolling and layering 20,000 pounds of recycled Kraft paper along the gallery walls, creating the largest and most ambitious piece of her career to date. Additional works by Ko, all hand-rolled and stained by the artist, as well as a documentary video of the Force of Nature, Shiro installation, can be seen in the first floor of the Domestic Arts building. Force of Nature, Shiro will be open to the public through February 7, 2016. This exhibition has been made possible in part through awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and Bank of America.

Lauren Clay: Drishti in the Domestic Arts Building, mezzanine Lauren Clay maintains a studio in Brooklyn, NY. She works primarily in paper, which she hand-dyes, cuts, and reassembles into carefully constructed three-dimensional forms. Her newer works, some exhibited for the first time in this exhibition, combine carefully shaped papier mâché sculptures with large scale prints of her vibrantly colored hand-marbled paper. These works are heavily influenced by the artist’s interest in eastern philosophies and meditative practice. The exhibition title, Drishti, refers to a meditative gaze, and is a nod to the artist’s spiritual influences. Also included among the works on view is a series of works by Clay that reference the great American sculptor David Smith. Robert Lobe: In the Forest Drawn of Metal featuring Forest Projects, Collaborative Works with Kathleen Gilje In the West Gallery Working primarily in the rural woodlands of Sussex County, NJ, Robert Lobe’s richly textured aluminum reliefs are made by hammering sheets of aluminum over natural forms in a technique adopted from the tradition of repoussé, which in French means “to push up.” In Lobe’s work, however, rather than working from the inside out, he works from the outer surface, capturing the essence of rocks and trees with pneumatic hammers and hand-made tools. The exhibition also features a selection of masterful collaborative works that incorporate the paintings of noted New York-based painter Kathleen Gilje. On view from April 11, 2015 – January 17, 2016.

Karl Stirner: Decades in Steel

In the Museum building The Museum Building will feature the powerful steel sculptures of Pennsylvania-based sculptor Karl Stirner. Karl Stirner: Decades in Steel explores the artist’s masterfully welded and manipulated industrial forms which are often inspired by the huge sections of steel Stirner reclaims from steel manufacturing yards. Stirner is a master of technique and construction, playing with space, surface texture and geometry to create tension or harmony seemingly at his whim. Still actively working at 92 years old, Stirner’s work in steel, as well as his support for the local arts community, has had a profound influence on generations of artists. Exhibiting his works with his father (Karl Stirner) for the first time, Jonas Stirner follows the creative tradition of welding and manipulating found steel into powerful yet whimsical and thought-provoking sculptures. Based in Florida since the mid-1990s, Jonas has exhibited his work throughout the state and has presented an impressive output of recent sculptures including sculptural reliefs for his exhibition at GFS. Early in his career, Stirner had the unique opportunity to work closely with Robert Rauschenberg as one of the artist’s assistants for 15 years at the renowned artist’s Captiva Island studio. A selection of Jonas’ work can be seen on the Museum Mezzanine.

REFLECTIONS IN THE CLASSROOM May 9 – June 21 This spring, we’re pleased to exhibit artwork from the talented students at Bear Tavern Elementary School in nearby Hopewell Valley Regional School District. The multimedia exhibition pairs artwork inspired by explorations at GFS with selected student writings. Come see how a range of media can be used to interpret a single subject, and how expressive young artists can be.

MEMBERS’ MUSINGS July 11 – August 23 Don’t miss the sixth annual exhibition of artwork by GFS members. In addition to supporting the arts, many GFS members are gifted artists themselves. Come see the diversity of their artistic creations and unique inspirations. This year’s juror is Dejáy B. Duckett, Associate Director and Associate Curator of the Arthur Ross Gallery at the University of Pennsylvania. Her interests include African American and international contemporary art in all media, with a particular focus on ecology, and collaborative site-specific projects. The first in a new series of lively and interactive discussions featuring experts in the field, behind the scenes looks at issues impacting contemporary artists, and opportunities for you to weigh in. From the work of pop artist Andy Warhol who created the iconic Campbell’s Soup image to recent news headlines about litigation between musician Pharrell Williams and the family of Marvin Gaye, copyright is a hot and oft-disputed topic. Many artists choose to incorporate elements from others in their work. Where is the line between homage, influence, and copyright infringement? Who decides? Join us for a fascinating panel discussion where you’ll hear from an artist, a lawyer, and an arts journalist. Studio Workshop: Paper Marbleizing with Lauren Clay Saturday, Sept. 12, 10am-5pm $240 Members; $255 non-Members Don’t miss this opportunity to take a workshop with exhibiting artist Lauren Clay! During this one-day intensive, participants will learn how to create historical combed patterns and will also develop their own unique designs. Instruction will include how to best setup a paper marbling work station and how to use various media, including methyl cellulose, carrageenan, ox gal, allum, and acrylic, to create intricate decorative patterns. You’ll leave with approximately 20 completed sheets of marbleized paper suitable for display or as a springboard for other artistic projects. Meet Bruce Lindsay, local sculptor, arts activist, and GFS instructor. Bruce is a professional sculptor and educator based in Trenton, New Jersey and has been actively creating sculpture in cast metals and glass for over thirty years. His sculptures Use of Memory and Between Essence and Existence, are part of the Sculpture Foundation permanent collection, and are sited at Grounds For Sculpture. Join Bruce for a lively discussion on the new technologies (like 3D printing) traditional sculptors are using to push their art in new directions.

LAYERS OF INSPIRATION FOR 3D PRINTING Saturdays, May 2 & 9, 10am-1pm $155 Members; $170 non-Members Want to create your own 3D printed sculpture? Now you can! In this unique 2-part adult workshop, you’ll experiment with 3D-modeling and printing technologies. Using the layered paper assemblages of exhibiting artist Jae Ko as inspiration, you’ll create your own miniature installation using paper. Your textural paper model will be laser scanned and printed using a plastic compound (PLA) before the next class. In your second class, you’ll finish your completed model and alternate finishing techniques will be discussed. Don’t miss this unique chance to 3D print your own artwork using the latest Makerbot technology! Instructors: Bruce Lindsay and Scot Thompson.

CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING

This Chinese Brush Painting workshop, inspired by the landscape of Grounds For Sculpture, will offer participants insight into the timehonored traditions of the ancient art form. Observation of the beautiful flower gardens, ponds and landscape elements each week will provide plenty of inspiration for painting in the studio! The basic techniques of Chinese Brush Painting will be covered: proper brush handling, different brush strokes, ink and color mixing. The instructor will give an initial demonstration in the class before step-by-step teaching to guide individual students. Floral painting has been one of the major subjects for both Eastern and Western paintings. Subject matter for this class will include seasonal flowers, birds and small animals. Participants will work progressively over the three weeks in creating elements of their own finished works. This class is open to all levels. GARDEN WORKSHOP: CREATING A CONTAINER GARDEN Saturday, June 20 and 27, 10am-12pm $125 Members; $145 non-Members Make a beautiful container for your garden that will last for years! Design, shape, and mold your own hypertufa cement container using a method similar to the sculpture casting process. The design of your planter is limited only by your imagination! Participants will explore planting options that highlight the unique containers created. You’ll talk soil, light, and composition for your particular container and transform it into a stunning container garden. Saturdays, August 8 and 15, 10am-3pm $285 Members; $295 non-Members Design and fabricate your own small scale (approximately 10” cube) steel sculpture in this 2-part workshop. Plan the design of your sculpture using exhibiting artist Karl Stirner’s work for inspiration. Then, it’s time to fabricate with found recycled steel components. Professional sculptors Bruce Lindsay and Scott Thompson will cut and weld metal components based on your mock-up, explaining their methods as they go. After your steel sculpture is fabricated, explore a variety of finishing options such as patina, paint, and tinted wax. Finished sculptures are sure to impress! Art of Metal Relief (ages 6-9), 11am Learn one of the processes of working in metal known as repoussé. You will design a piece that looks as if it may have been crafted by artist Robert Lobe by applying lightweight metal over a natural object, then working the metal to create textures and relief. Art of Paper-Making (ages 6-9), 1pm Use a material that inspires Lauren Clay and go far beyond the limits of paper! Recycle old magazine and paper scraps to create upcycled plantable paper while learning the simple process of paper-making. It’s defined as “a rhetorical device in which one medium of art relates another medium by defining and describing its essence and form, and by doing so communicates more directly to the audience through its illuminative liveliness.” Experience the current exhibition season at Grounds For Sculpture and use it as inspiration to compose your original ekphrastic poem based on the works on view. Kick off the series with a staple artist of the East Coast summer blues circuit, Mikey Junior. With his infectious personality and absolute command of his medium, this legendary genre is in good hands. Celebrate his newest album, Traveling South, as he tells stories we can all relate to, while drawing us deep into the roots of blues music via his mastery of diatonic and chromatic harmonicas.

Relax under the stars and let the ambient chill waves of Lancaster, PA-based Second Sky wash over you. Blending elements of Pop, Classical Indian, Shoegaze, Chillwave, and Disco, Second Sky weaves a dub-influenced fusion soundscape. Their newest album, Touching the Surface, applies their early-electronic Bollywood style to intricately arranged songs full of Beatles-esque harmonies.

Rounding out our summer concert series, we welcome blues vocalist, saxophonist, songwriter, and world-renowned Berklee College of Music graduate, Vanessa Collier. Recently honored as a top three finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, Collier blends her blues background with elements of funk, rock, soul, and gritty saxophone solos for a powerful show not to be missed.
