ABOUT GFS Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully sited on landscaped parkland full of exotic trees and flowers. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin.

They join the enchanting works of our visionary founder Seward Johnson and many others by the finest up and coming artists of our time. Join us and discover the beauty, charm, whimsy, and inspiration that our 42 acres hold. The collection and exhibits at GFS contain art works that may be of a challenging, sensitive, and/or mature nature. Please be aware and consult GFS staff for advice if you have specific concerns.

Please be aware that there may be times when the park is at capacity and we cannot admit further guests. This is more likely to occur on weekends when the weather is favorable.

ACCESSIBILITY

GFS is recognized for its dedication to designing accessible facilities and programs. The Domestic Arts Building, Welcome Center, and Seward Johnson Center for the Arts are fully accessible as is the Museum Building’s main level. Power-assisted doors are installed in our galleries and Welcome Center. Large-print editions of information and brochures are available, as are assisted-listening devices for tours and lectures. EXHIBITIONS FALL/WINTER 2015-16 EXHIBITIONS ON VIEW OCTOBER 25, 2015-MARCH 27, 2016 This season, we bring you two powerful exhibitions in partnership with the International Sculpture Center (ISC). In the Museum Building, we bring you 18 works from innovative artists, each of whom is an ISC member in one of three national chapters. In the Domestic Arts Building, view the future of sculpture as we exhibit the winning works of the ISC’s Annual Outstanding Student Achievement Awards. Together, these two exhibitions reflect contemporary work from an international body of artists of varying experience, age, and background—providing insight into present and future.

DISRUPTION MUSEUM BUILDING Disruption has been organized and curated by Grounds For Sculpture in collaboration with three national chapters of the International Sculpture Center (ISC): Chicago Sculpture International, Texas Sculpture Group, and the Pacific Rim Sculptors Group. The exhibition features 18 works by contemporary artists, each of whom belongs to one of these three chapters. The selected works represent an interpretation of disruption relative to our world and the forces that impact daily life, featuring artists who reflect the challenges of contemporary society through the lens of their individual experience.

DOMESTIC ARTS BUILDING This annual exhibition offers a glimpse into the future of contemporary sculpture as some of the most talented sculpture students, selected from hundreds of domestic and international art programs, exhibit their award-winning work in the 21st annual ISC & GFS collaborative exhibition.

JAE KO: SELECTIONS, FEATURING FORCE OF NATURE , SHIRO EAST GALLERY ON VIEW THROUGH JULY 10, 2016

Washington, DC based sculptor Jae Ko has transformed the East Gallery with her monumental paper relief. Spanning more than 80 linear feet, Ko transformed the sculptural into the architectural by rolling and layering hundreds of stacks of recycled white Kraft paper along the gallery walls, creating the largest and most ambitious piece of her career to date. A documentary video offering a glimpse into the installation process accompanies the exhibition.

ROBERT LOBE: IN THE FOREST DRAWN OF METAL FEATURING FOREST PROJECTS, COLLABORATIVE WORKS WITH KATHLEEN GILJE WEST GALLERY ON VIEW THROUGH JANUARY 17, 2016 The West Gallery is exhibiting the work of New Jersey/New York based artist Robert Lobe. Working primarily in the rural woodlands of Sussex County, NJ, Lobe’s richly textured aluminum reliefs are made by hammering sheets of aluminum over natural forms in a technique adopted

from the tradition of repoussé, which in French means “to push up.” In Lobe’s work however, rather than working from the inside out, he works from the outer surface, capturing the essence of rocks and trees with pneumatic hammers and hand-made tools. The exhibition

also features a selection of masterful collaborative works that incorporate the noted paintings of New York based painter Kathleen Gilje. A documentary video offers insight into the creation of these multifaceted works.

PAUL HENRY RAMIREZ: RATTLE WEST GALLERY OPENS FEBRUARY 28, 2016 Artist Paul Henry Ramirez will create a site-specific installation in Grounds For Sculpture’s West Gallery, starting in late January and opening to the public on February 28, 2016. The installation will treat the entire West Gallery as a

blank canvas. Through a combination of direct paintings on the wall, canvas wall installations, sound, and colorful window film, Ramirez will transform the West Gallery into a whimsical fantasy of color and energy, playing with and against the

architecture of the space. When a visitor steps inside the gallery they are stepping inside a sculptural environment, where the viewer experiences Ramirez’s work on multiple sensory levels. On view through January 8, 2017.

EDUCATION GALLERY A GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE HISTORY: THE LAND IN PICTURES AND WORDS ON VIEW UNTIL NOVEMBER 1, 2015 Through images created by members of the Princeton Photography Club, view the transformation of our site from the barren New Jersey State Fairgrounds into the lush 42-acre sculpture park that GFS is today. Included in the exhibit are newspaper articles from the Hamilton Historical Society, memorabilia from the New Jersey State Fairgrounds, and historic GFS photographs. This exhibition is sponsored in part by Charles Schwab.

TEAM WORK NOVEMBER 14–DECEMBER 13, 2015 This exhibition features artwork by the staff of multiple organizations whose offices are located on the Grounds For Sculpture campus: GFS, International Sculpture Center, Johnson Art and Education Foundation, Inc., The Seward Johnson Atelier, Inc., and Rat’s Restaurant. Their artwork demonstrates the talents of individuals who are inspired by sculpture and art on a daily basis.

Focus on Sculpture is a juried exhibition of photographs featuring sculpture as their subject. This annual exhibition promotes sculpture as seen by members of the community through their photographs. This year’s juror is Kenneth Ek, a professional photographer based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, who specializes in art documentation photography. He has worked with numerous clients, including artists and museums, to create stunning photographs of visual art using state of the art photography equipment and meticulously designed lighting.

With new featured guests each season, this ongoing series is designed to provide insight into the process, challenges, realizations, and successes of artists working in the field today.

JOYCE CAROL OATES: THE MYSTERY OF CREATIVITY THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 7-9pm $15 MEMBERS; $20 NON-MEMBERS Join us for a very special engagement featuring well-known author and poet, Joyce Carol Oates. One of the most prolific and lauded writers of our time, Ms. Oates will read excerpts from her new memoir, The Lost Landscape: A Writer’s Coming of Age (Sept., 2015), and speak to her creative process and inspirations. From the back cover of the book, “In The Lost Landscape, Joyce Carol Oates vividly re-creates the early years of her life in western New York State, powerfully evoking the romance of childhood and the way it colors everything that comes after. From early memories of her relatives to remembrances of a particularly poignant friendship with a red hen, from her first friendships to her first experiences with death, The Lost Landscape is an arresting account of the ways in which Oates’s life (and her life as a writer) was shaped by early childhood and how her later work was influenced by a hardscrabble rural upbringing.” A book signing will follow. A DISRUPTIVE CONVERSATION THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 6pm $10 MEMBERS; $15 NON-MEMBERS Artists in the Disruption exhibition on view in the Museum Building were asked to explore the theme of disruption in their artwork–but what does this mean? Disruption occurs on multiple levels in daily life; it could be a minor or major event, a decision to be made, something self-imposed or out of our control. In a presentation purposely designed to create disorder, learn how GFS Chief Curator Tom Moran and guest artists see the pieces on view speaking to the exhibition’s theme–sure to be a unique and lively discussion! Paul Henry Ramirez is a contemporary American artist, born in El Paso, Texas and based in New Jersey, whose solo exhibitions consist of painting, sitespecific installations, sculpture, ceramics, drawings, prints, art collaborations and public art projects. Ramirez has had numerous one-person museum exhibitions, including the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati (2001), the Whitney Museum at Philip Morris (2002), and the Newark Museum (2010). His work is in permanent collections at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Hammer Museum, and many others. GFS has commissioned Ramirez to create RATTLE, a dynamic site-specific installation, which will run from February 2016–January 2017 in the West Gallery. GRAFFITO WORKS SINFONIETTA NOVA THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5

West Windsor-based orchestra Sinfonietta Nova performs PulitzerPrize winning composer John Luther Adams’ Dream in White On White, among other works. Adam’s music encompasses the native cultures and life of Alaska; indicative of the vast landscape of the country. With a melodic effect that is slow and trancelike, this featured work evokes the treeless, windsweptexpanses of Western Alaska–a musical counterpart to Jae Ko’s installation of Force of Nature, Shiro.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12 Experience an evening of improvisational dance with movement and music spontaneously created and inspired by the textured and anodized aluminum wall reliefs of Robert Lobe’s exhibition In the Forest Drawn of Metal, featuring Forest Projects, Collaborative Works with Kathleen Gilje. The Graffito Works dancers will create movement that examines the textural nuances in nature, explores the creation of mimetic shells of originals, grounding and formation of roots, and the use of space, along with interplay of the unnatural and unpredictable in the physical world.

PLORK THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19 The Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk) of Princeton University highlights thecollaborative exhibitions with the International Sculpture Center by creating unconventional sonic worlds via modified electronic sources, laptops, and custom speakers. The result: a melodic and rhythmic ode to disruption, opening new avenues for the future of musical performance.

KOKEDAMA: STARTING YOUR SPRING BULB STRING GARDEN MARCH 20, 10am-12pm $30 MEMBERS; $40 NON-MEMBERS Join us for a two-hour workshop focused on spring florals and learn a new take on the art of Kokedama— one of many beautiful Japanese garden methods. Loosely translating to “moss ball,” Kokedama is originally a style of Japanese bonsai in which the plant’s roots are wrapped in moss and bound with string, transforming it into a sculptural art form. Gardeners have adapted the traditional form to offer a new string garden approach, using a variety of plants and suspending these little green orbs in the air. You’ll leave this workshop with two spring bulbs ready for hanging, and the knowledge to expand your own Kokedama string garden. Each “moss ball” orb makes a lovely springtime gift. This one-day collage/mixed media workshop is playful and informative for both the novice and experienced student. Working in abstract format, and inspired by the GFS exhibition of Disruption, the workshop begins with a demonstration on the use of collage materials, glues, and glazes. Layering and adding acrylic paints to the paper adds more dimension. Participants are asked to consider such compositional elements as texture, tone, line, and color as they create something lovely and harmonious. They’ll then be encouraged to alter the work around the theme of disruption by adding “opposite” components such as unlikely colors and bold “disruptive” lines. Critiques will be offered during different process stages. Students will complete at least one piece by the end of the workshop. Bring as many kinds of old and new papers as you can find, Mod Podge glue, 2 or 3 canvas boards or mixed media paper to use for a background, some acrylic paints and brushes, and any other media that interests you. LEAVES DRAWN IN CLAY SATURDAYS, OCTOBER 31, NOV. 7 AND 14, 1–4pm $110 MEMBERS; $125 NON-MEMBERS Be inspired by the beautiful autumn landscape to create ceramics that are influenced by the natural world! In this three-part ceramics workshop, participants will explore hand building techniques, from working with slabs to unique methods of creating surface textures that evoke the forces of nature. Participants will create threedimensional pottery capturing autumn’s textures by taking richly colored leaves and pressing them into soft, impressionable clay. “Fossilizing” these natural subjects adds a touch of nature to your home and would be a fantastic centerpiece for a Thanksgiving table! WOODBLOCK PRINTMAKING SATURDAY, JANUARY 30, 10am–5pm $95 MEMBERS; $115 NON-MEMBERS Like sculpture, woodblock printmaking is a hands-on technique that can be explored by artists of all levels. Students walk outdoors to gain inspiration from the natural setting of GFS (come dressed for a quick winter stroll!), then return to the studio to create a line drawing on wood. The negative space of the image is carved away to produce a bold, linear design ready to be printed. Participants will produce three 8x10 woodblock prints using “shina” plywood imported from Japan and transfer their designs onto high-quality Japanese paper. Creating the composition on wood, carving techniques, use and care of tools, types of paper, and use of non-toxic woodblock inks are skills covered during the duration of the class. What is the process of felting a sculpture? A rectangular piece of plastic is enclosed in many layers of wool. After wetting it with warm, soapy water, it is massaged and rubbed for 15-20 minutes on both sides to entangle the fibers. Plastic is then removed so these soft felted pieces can shrink through even more vigorous agitation. By choosing a different location to cut into the felt, participants will determine the sculptural outcome of their particular finished 3D artwork. Explore how felt can be shaped - almost like clay - into visually intriguing fiber art. Registration is exclusively through the Arts Council of Princeton. Create your own iron artwork! Learn an intuitive process suitable for beginners and students of any skill level. Students will scratch unique designs into a 5 x 5 inch square sand mold, to be used to create a plaque or medallion. Each mold will then be cast with molten iron during the afternoon’s demonstration; completed pieces can be picked up at a later date, or for students willing to wait until the end of the pour, pieces can be brought home. A spill doesn’t ruin a drawing when it becomes something new and exciting! Join us as we read Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg and learn that it’s okay to make mistakes. After being inspired by all the pop-ups, tears, smudges, holes, bends, and lift-the-flaps this interactive story has to offer, children will participate in a creative art project inspired by our current exhibition.

FAMILY DROP-IN: LANDSCAPE-INSPIRED POETRY PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ARTS COUNCIL OF PRINCETON

Celebrate Earth Day with poetry! Create poems inspired by Mother Nature and the beautiful landscape surrounding you. We’ll begin with a brief demo by poet Colby Cedar Smith as she creates a poem and talks through her process. Then, tour the grounds with your family and work together to create your own poems. As you tour, you will happen upon prompt words hung from tree limbs and other supports that you can choose to incorporate or interpret in your own creation. Participants will quite literally be walking through an inspirational landscape of words. Watercolor pencils will be provided so you can illustrate the borders of your poems. Completed poems will be on a clothespin display in the park for visitors to enjoy. Drop-in between 1 and 3pm.

Join Rat’s Culinary Team headed by Executive Chef Scott Swiderski, formally of the iconic Buddakan, for the sixth season of cooking classes at Rat’s Restaurant. This year the culinary team will teach you how to prepare dishes from the great regions of Italy. In addition, Rat’s own wine expert Alan Hallmark will present wine and beverage pairings to help you select the perfect complement to your meal.

Latin America is a highly diverse area with varied cuisines from nation to nation, all influenced by cultures from around the world. This four-week course will have an emphasis on the spices, exotic ingredients, and interesting cooking techniques from Central and South America and the Caribbean. In addition, Rat’s own wine expert, Alan Hallmark, will present South American wine and beverage pairings to help you select the perfect wine or cocktail for your dinner.
