NEW THIS SEASON JUDY BLUME WITH LEONARD LOPATE ZOE KEATING IN CONCERT BALLETX PRESENTS RATTLEX MEMBERS TRIP: GERMANY + 2 ART FAIRS
WELCOME LETTER
Dear Friends, There is so much happening at Grounds For Sculpture this season. Throughout this brochure, you will find an open invitation to experience art and nature in a whole new way. Join us for enjoyment, enrichment, time with family and friends, and inspiration. Visit the exhibitions of Elyn Zimmerman and Ned Smyth—two prominent artists with a longstanding commitment to and love of the natural environment. Zimmerman’s grand quarried stone constructions reference archeological monuments while Smyth’s large-scale works explore the intimate texture of a stone held in your hand. And through our partnership with the International Sculpture Center, also featured this season is the next generation of sculptors. We continue to expand our horticultural offerings, including the addition of a new winter garden. Join our horticulturist Michael Strengari for seasonal tours that showcase the beauty of the grounds as the brilliant colors of fall give way to winter views of the garden, revealing
the texture, structure, and bones of our wonderfully varied specimen trees. Warm up indoors with special opportunities to hear artists speak about their process, including renowned author Judy Blume, plus exciting performances by contemporary dance troupe BalletX, musician Zoe Keating, and the return of fan-favorite, Boheme Opera. Embrace your inner artist through workshops for children and adults, and round out the season with new friends during our GFS Book Club and Film for Thought series. And just a sneak peek ahead: spring 2017 marks our 25th anniversary. Stay tuned for exciting ways to celebrate this remarkable milestone with us! I hope you will visit us soon.

EXHIBITIONS Grounds For Sculpture is pleased and honored to announce its upcoming Fall/Winter 2016-17 season featuring major solo exhibitions by two distinguished American sculptors, Elyn Zimmerman and Ned Smyth.
ELYN ZIMMERMAN: WIND, WATER, STONE
Elyn Zimmerman, Machu Picchu Diptych (right panel), Peru, 1987, gelatin silver print, 30 x 80 inches, Collection of the Artist.
EAST GALLERY AUG. 27, 2016 – JAN. 7, 2018 WEST GALLERY FEB. 18, 2017 – JAN. 7, 2018
In her stone sculptures, Zimmerman balances the sensuous materiality of magnificent slabs of quarried stone with other key elements such as water, light, and landscape. Zimmerman’s sculptures reference her attraction to archaic architectural form, a subject also captured in her lush black and white photographs on display in the East Gallery. These photographs, taken during her travels in places such as Peru, India, and Egypt, are joined by images of her many public sculptures, allowing the viewer to make the connection between her large scale public works and the form, light and composition seen in her black and white photography. Beginning in February 2017, the exhibition continues in the West Gallery which will further explore Zimmerman’s works on paper, juxtaposing works from the artist’s Elemental series, including topographical photographic collages, ink and wash drawings of moving water, and pastel drawings of clouds from her Heaven’s Breath series.
Elyn Zimmerman: Wind, Water, Stone is supported in part with a grant from the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, the Agnes Gund Foundation and exhibition supporters. Ned Smyth, Order to Fit 1, 2015, found stones, cast concrete, 19 x 4 x 96 inches, Collection of the Artist. Photo by Ken Ek.
Ned Smyth: Moments of Matter is supported in part by the Brooke Barrie Art Fund.
NED SMYTH: MOMENTS OF MATTER MUSEUM BUILDING OCTOBER 23, 2016 – APRIL 2, 2017
EXHIBITIONS 4
Ned Smyth, also a pioneer in public art, will exhibit his work in the Museum Building. Like Zimmerman, Smyth developed a fascination with stone. In his youth, Smyth was influenced by classical architecture and sculpture while accompanying his father, a prominent art historian, on his travels in Europe. In recent years, Smyth came across some small stones that he collected long ago and had since forgotten. His imagination was captured by the shapes of these stones that seemed reminiscent of the classical images of his youth. Featured in this exhibition are eight large sculptural works which draw inspiration from the huge cache of stones that he has collected for more than 35 years. These sculptures, and several smaller stone installations, are accompanied by more than half a dozen large format black and white photographs that further explore Smyth’s powerful obsession with definition, texture, and scale. An installation of cement and pigment based paintings on panel offer an important glimpse at the possible origins of the large stone works.
Krista Anderson, Histories, 2016, found objects, 36 x 144 x 5 inches, Collection of the Artist.

SEWARD JOHNSON
NED SMYTH
Spend time with the visionary founder of GFS in this rare Art Salon with Seward Johnson. Known to many as the artist who created the well-loved Man-on-the-Street sculptures, Johnson is equally beloved for his Beyond the Frame and Icon series. The event starts with an exclusive visit to the artist’s studio, where you will experience the unique Van Gogh bedroom. Then, dine with Mr. Johnson as he reflects on his career, tells stories, and answers questions.
Smyth has shown his work at esteemed art museums and galleries nationally and abroad since 1974. His early work was in the minimal tradition, except that he included architectural references and created architectural spaces. Over the last decade the artist’s work has evolved from using Judeo-Christian and historical references to working with natural organic forms and images. His exhibition entitled Ned Smyth: Moments of Matter, offers a ten-year survey of his sculpture and photography, and is on view through April 2017.

BLANK CITY
SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 3pm SNOW DATE: FEBRUARY 5 Made on DIY shoestring budgets with the pioneering musicians, visual artists, performers, and derelicts that ruled Downtown NYC, the films surveyed in Blank City document an exhilarating cultural landscape. From the late 70s through the mid-80s, when the East Village was still a wasteland of cheap rent and cheaper drugs, these directors created bold works that would go on to profoundly influence the development of independent film as we know it today. Featured players include acclaimed directors Jim Jarmusch and John Waters, actor-writer-director Steve Buscemi, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, hip-hop legend Fab 5 Freddy, and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. [94 mins]
STATION TO STATION
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 3pm SNOW DATE: FEBRUARY 26 A train travels 4,000 miles across North America with a revolving community of artists and musicians who collaborate on recordings, artworks, films, and 10 “happenings” across the country. Station to Station is a feature-length film made up of 62 one-minute films. With each changing minute, the film explores creativity through a different artist, musician, place or perspective, ultimately revealing a larger sense of modern expression transcending the individual voices. [72 mins]

SPECIAL EVENTS 18
Zoe Keating is a one-woman orchestra. Born in Canada and classically trained from the age of eight, she spent her 20’s dabbling in computer software while moonlighting as a cellist in rock bands. Inevitably, she combined the two and developed her signature style. Using a cello and a foot-controlled laptop to record layer upon layer of cello, the result is lush, beautiful, and other-worldly music. From 2002–2006 she was a member of the cello-rock group Rasputina—and as a cellist and arranger, she’s worked with artists including Imogen Heap, DJ Shadow, Curt Smith, and Paolo Nutini and performed live on NPR, television, in medieval churches, punk clubs, and even outdoors in the Nevada desert. A night of exceptional music not to be missed!
SONIC EVOLUTION: A FAMILY PERFORMANCE WITH CELLO FURY SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 11am & 2pm FREE WITH PARK ADMISSION

Audience members will learn about the string and percussion families, compare and contrast musical styles, explore sound effects, discover how technology can be applied to a classical art form, and participate directly in this exciting and energizing program.
