EXHIBITIONS Masayuki Koorida: Sculpture

May 6, 2018 – March 17, 2019 An extensive survey of work by Japanese artist Masayuki Koorida in his first major exhibition in the United States, this show includes large scale works in granite and marble, small playful works in stainless steel and cast acrylic, and new drawings. His sculptures, which are often inspired by nature, are as much serious works as they are engaging and inviting of viewer interaction. Location: Museum Building and Outdoors

Michael Rees: Synthetic Cells

June 2, 2018 – July 14, 2019 Since the advent of our internet age, Michael Rees has been redefining objects by using digital technology and innovative material to engage contemporary themes and subjects with sculpture. Synthetic Cells: Site and Para (Site) presents an unparalleled dialogue between object, perception, and reality. His newest sculptures challenge the viewer to question how the boundaries of our physical and digital experiences are converging. Location: West Gallery

James Carl: oof

July 28, 2018 – January 5, 2020 Canadian artist James Carl makes his first major debut in the United States with two parallel exhibitions. oof is a monumentally scaled wall relief constructed from brown cardboard. Inspired by the egg carton, Carl has created his own version in a geometric form which will be dye-cut, assembled, and installed by the dozens on the vast 80’ wall. Carl observes that the work’s visual “noise” will contrast with its acoustic flattening on the space. Location: East Gallery

James Carl: BLIND

August 11, 2018 – March 17, 2019 BLIND features work from Carl’s Jalousie series, which he began in 2007 and is still creating today. These sculptures focus on Carl’s decades-long exploration of volume, form, and cultural archeology. He creates these works by using a remarkably elaborate and mathematical process of weaving lengths of venetian blinds . Location: Domestic Arts Building

That’s Worth Celebrating: The Life and Work of the Johnson Family

On View Now This exhibition focuses on the Johnson family’s passions, their belief in the spirit of innovation and the power of community, and how the founder’s vision for The Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture shaped Grounds For Sculpture’s early years. Curated by Lynn DeClemente Losavio, Collection Manager of The Seward Johnson Atelier. Location: Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson Gallery

Community Takeover: What a Relief!

Harp of David #1 by Dina Wind

Dina Wind, (1938- 2014) was born in Israel, but spent her formative years as an artist in Philadelphia. She began her study as a painter, but she became immersed in the process of welding scrap steel into sophisticated and challenging abstract spatial compositions of various scales. She left a strong legacy of works in her studio and in numerous public and private collections over her nearly 30 years as a sculptor. Less than five years after her passing, her work has been further embraced by the Woodmere Art Museum and Grounds For Sculpture, two museums which have commissioned monumental enlargements of Wind’s steel works for their respective collections. In partnership with the Dina Wind Estate and The Seward Johnson Atelier, a 26’ enlargement of Wind’s Harp of David #1 will be installed in July 2018.
