FROM THE DIRECTOR’S (CLUTTERED) DESK After you work at GFS a while, everything you do falls into the rhythms and cycles of nature and for me spring can’t come fast enough. The park bursts with color and new life. Even the sculpture warms up and beckons. And each year there is more for you to see and more ways for you to enjoy us. This year it is the serene beauty of the park in the evening. From June 1 through Labor Day we will stay open till 10pm every night save Sunday, at reduced rates and with more to see and do, especially down at the Gazebo (Can you say ice cream?). But this is just one way we are growing. Not far in the offing is a major capital project that will utterly transform the Johnson Center for the Arts: a spacious new visitor center, new gift shop, café, large video and film room plus new space for receptions and private events. And it’s not too early to think even a year from now when we will mount a huge retrospective exhibition of Seward Johnson’s amazing work. But for now I can almost smell the flowers. So let spring’s siren sing to you. Come frolic at Grounds For Sculpture. ABOUT GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), a magical place where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully positioned on meticulously landscaped parklands full of thousands of exotic trees and flowers. It is a feast for the senses. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin. They join the enchanting works of our visionary founder Seward Johnson as well as many others by the finest up and coming artists of our time. MUSEUM BUILDING ROBERT TAPLIN Through April Heaven, Hell, and the History of Punch

Three deeply compelling series of work by figurative sculptor Robert Taplin, each of which brims with references to contemporary life as seen through the lens of ancient Roman creation mythology, Dante’s medieval-era epic, Inferno, or the trickster Punch, a character that originated in 17th century Italy’s commedia dell’arte theater.

JO YARRINGTON The Leap

Past and present blur in this new large-scale work created specifically for GFS. Translucent photographic images related to the New Jersey Fairgrounds (located here for over a century) will cover the huge windows at one end of the building, creating a magnificent interplay between our history and our current landscape. Viewers become part of the work as they are caught in the perpetually shifting, mesmerizing images ignited by sunlight. Yarrington has exhibited her work throughout the U.S. as well as in Mexico, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Italy, and Iceland and is the recipient of many grants, fellowships, and commissions. Opening May 4 Less Than <> More Than In this spectacular large-scale environmental sculpture from Jason Peters, the original purpose of commonly manufactured materials is nearly obscured, seemingly defying gravity and multiplying through some bizarre organic force. Metal chair frames twisted with colorful fluorescent tubes provide delightful surprise encounters that challenge our perceptions and expectations. Peters has had solo and group exhibitions and prestigious artist residencies across the U.S. In 2008, he was invited by The Pulitzer Foundation, in collaboration with the St. Louis Contemporary Art Museum, to create a monumental outdoor sculpture for the Community Light Project.

GreenLight exhibitions change at least four times a year, giving you that many more reasons to visit. Through July View an introduction to and interpretive materials for MYTHOS, an exhibition in The Meadow, including models of proposed site-specific installations by Bruce Lindsay and Athena Tacha and a fresh look at Carlos Dorrien’s The Nine Muses in the park.

DOMESTIC ARTS BUILDING INT’L SCULPTURE CENTER’S 18th Annual Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Through March

MARK PARSONS Mapping Memories

Through March then to be sited in the park in April. 2012 Artist-in-Residence Mark Parsons created Redline with the GFS community. This exhibition invites you to view the final fabrication of this massive paper pulp sculpture, along with an excellent video documenting the concept and process of the project, related work by Parsons, and more. In April, this large piece will be sited in the park, where GFS visitors will witness its gradual erosion from the forces of nature to reveal an inner meaning. Funded in part by Provident Bank Foundation.

The future is now in this exhibition of sculpture by 12 student artists selected from a large number of international submissions by a prestigious jury of established artists and curators. Through a collaboration between ISC and GFS, their award-winning work is combined in an annual exhibition.

PEPÓN OSORIO Opening May 4 Where the Me Becomes We

Inspired by childhood memories in Puerto Rico of assisting his mother in creating intricately decorated cakes, Pepón Osorio layers every-day items – bicycles, furniture, even whole rooms –with excessive ornamentation using shiny, colorful knickknacks, embellished fabrics, printed items, and so on. He created a new work for this exhibition about his mother’s glorious cakes. Osorio’s work has been shown world-wide, and he is the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, a Pew Fellowship, and the Smithsonian Legacy Award among many other awards. He was featured in the first season of the acclaimed PBS television series Art in the 21st Century, which is available for viewing in the gallery.

JONATHAN SHAHN

Opening May 4 Since the early 1960s, NJ figurative artist Jonathan Shahn has explored the human figure through paintings, drawings, and sculptures. This season, GFS is exhibiting a selection of Shahn’s human heads, contrasting his work in two materials that illuminate his artistic range. The carved wood heads have a classical, timeless quality, and the smaller plaster heads, encased in boxes and lit from above, are stunningly expressive. Shahn’s work has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries in the U.S. and Europe. He has taught at Tyler School in Rome and at the Art Students League in New York City, among other prestigious institutions. FOCUS ON SCULPTURE Through April 14

This annual show is a juried exhibition of amateur photographers featuring sculpture as their subject. This year’s distinguished juror is Michael S. Miller, whose nature, adventure, and editorial images are nationally recognized and published, with an extensive scenic collection of New Jersey and America’s National Parks.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS May 3–June 16

Community Connections is the culmination of years of workshops in which the public was invited to create sculptural wheels from recycled materials. This exhibition aims to generate dialogue about the power of art to bring a community together in the pursuit of beauty.

EXHIBITING ARTIST LECTURE JO YARRINGTON Saturday, June 22, 1pm

Learn about the transformation of space through images and light from artist Jo Yarrington, whose work can be seen in the Museum Building. Her work blurs past with present and combines glass, waxed paper, and transparent photographs to create her intriguing visualscapes. Yarrington is a Professor of Studio Art in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University in Connecticut. $5 per person. IN THE MEADOW… Through July MYTHOS Visions from Mythology and Legend

MYTHOS reveals the explorations by seven artists into the imagination and creation of myths to explain our universe, condition, and plight. Representing a wide variety of mythological themes and sculptural mediums, MYTHOS features over 25 works by Dana Stewart, Michele Oka Doner, Nina Levy, and Marsha Pels out in The Meadow and continues in the park with Carlos Dorrien’s The Nine Muses and Athena Tacha’s Labyrinthos, a site-specific earthwork, and Bruce Lindsay’s Sisyphus, both on view in the Museum Building.

BENAR VENET Arcs and Indeterminate Lines

Three of Venet’s extraordinary immense, but lyrical steel sculptures are sited this season. In 2011, Venet, an artist of international renown whose work is rarely exhibited in the U.S., was featured on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. He was also the winner of International Julio González Prize for the year of 2013.

A seed bomb is a little capsule with everything needed to grow a plant all bundled up: clay, fertilizer, and indigenous seeds.
