LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Ten years...hard to believe that Grounds For Sculpture has been the nonprofit organization operating this amazing park that long. The time has flown by so quickly and yet it is equally astonishing to see how far we have come under our founder’s vision: the sculpture, the landscape, the exhibitions, the spaces of intimacy and inspiration, events for all ages, educational workshops, great dining, and innovative ways for you to interact with art and for art to interact with you. So now we begin to close out our 10th anniversary year just as we began it, by celebrating all the ways that Grounds For Sculpture can engage and delight you and your family. This event guide shows dozens of ways to do that. None of it, though, could happen without the many people and supporters who make it possible. Begin with great artists placing with care more than 250 sculptures onto a magnificent arboretum. Mix in featured fall/winter exhibitions by the master of equine sculpture Deborah Butterfield and the family of santeros (carvers of saints) Felix, Joseph and Krissa Lopez. Season well with exhibitions in the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts. Then top it off with the annual exhibit of International Sculpture Center’s 2010 Outstanding Student Achievement awardees...a great starting recipe. But there are hundreds more; from our founder, trustees, extraordinary staff and dedicated docents and volunteers to the scores who ensure that our grounds, events, culinary delights and all the activities here are worthy of you, our patrons. This includes over 1,800 members, our generous individual contributors and those from corporations, foundations, the State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Thank you one and all. Please take every opportunity to revel in these great days and tell your friends and family about us. I can guarantee that there will always be something new to delight at Grounds For Sculpture. ANNIVERSARY

2010 marks the 10th anniversary of Grounds For Sculpture (GFS) becoming a public non-profit organization. Ten years ago, GFS opened its gates to the general public, began a membership program, and started an exciting line-up of entertainment and educational workshops and events. Ten years have flown by so quickly and we have seen such growth that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hosting a year-long party to celebrate.

Special giveaways on the 10th of every month, moonlight park tours, 10th anniversary workshops and lectures, an Artist-in-Residence experience, and the first ever exhibition of work by our members are just some of the many programs awaiting our visitors. Please mark your calendars and join the party.

Accessibility Grounds For Sculpture is a leader in designing its facilities and programs to serve persons with disabilities. Special vehicles are available to assist persons with mobility impairment. The Museum Building, fully accessible on the first floor and has a specially designed “Patron Guide” for Artwork on its mezzanine level. The Domestic Arts Building is fully accessible as is the Visitor’s Center and the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts. Touch and audio tours for the visually and hearing impaired may be obtained in the Visitor’s Center. Large print editions of information and brochures are also available at the Visitor’s Center.

DEBORAH BUTTERFIELD • LOPEZ FAMILY • ISC AWARDEES October 9 Fall/Winter Exhibition 2010

Reception: Sat., October 9, 2 – 5pm The park will be closed to the public all day. Members and invited guests only. Reservations are required. Members must be in good standing and be in possession of their membership card no later than 2 weeks prior to the opening to gain admission to this event. Members MUST RSVP. Children under 18 years of age will not be admitted.

Exhibitions: October 10 through April 18, 2011 International Sculpture Center Exhibition: October 10 – January 2, 2011 Exhibiting in the Museum Building is the metal and cast bronze horse sculpture of Deborah Butterfield. The Domestic Arts Building will feature the Lopez family who are santeros (carvers of saints). Felix, Joseph and Krissa Lopez will exhibit in one of the few exhibitions featuring the artwork of members of the their family. Also this season, recipients of the International Sculpture Center 2010 Outstanding Student Achievement Awards will be shown in the Domestic Arts Building.

July 31 Student Exhibition in the Education Gallery

July 31 – September 12. Grounds For Sculpture is proud to present its first student exhibition, featuring artwork created during our adult workshops held between August 2009 and July 2010. The diversity of the works on view showcase the varying backgrounds and perspectives of this talented group.

September 25 Matheny Exhibition in the Education Gallery

Reception: Sat., September 25, 2-4pm (invited guests only) Exhibition: September 25 through November 14. Grounds For Sculpture welcomes Matheny Medical and Educational Center, a special hospital and educational facility for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities, located in Peapack, NJ. The exhibition will feature artwork in various types of media and further promotes GFS’s commitment to organizations from the local and regional community.

September 11 Curator’s Walk

July 6 Artist in Residence Object Collection

Beginning July 6. Do you have things that you don’t want to throw away, but would like to see go to a good cause? Donate them to Grounds For Sculpture for the Artist in Residence project. October 11 Artist in Residence Eric Schultz

October 11 – 15 and 18 – 22. 10am – 4pm. This month, found-object artist Eric Schultz will be in residence creating a humanoid sculpture in his own unique, comical style repurposing and recycling items used in our everyday lives. Volunteers, students and assistants will help to create this unique work of art on view at Grounds For Sculpture. To volunteer in the creation of sculpture during this special two-week residency, call the Coordinator of Volunteer Services at (609) 586-1182.

October 11 Artist in Residence Volunteers Requested!

October 11-15, and 18-22, 10 am – 4 pm. Are you interested in working hands-on creating a sculpture to be on exhibit at GFS? Here is your chance to get down-and-dirty, work with a professional artist, manipulate various types of small objects and wire, work with power tools (not always necessary) and have fun during a few pleasant fall days. Volunteers are requested during this two-week period. High-School, College students and Adults needed. Minimum age requirement is 15 years (under 18 must have signed parental consent.) July 10 Member Exhibition Juror’s Talk

Sat., July 10, 2 pm. Free with admission. Member Exhibition jurors Johannah Hutchison, Executive Director of the International Sculpture Center; Liselot van der Heijden, Associate Professor and Fine Art Coordinator at The College of New Jersey and Lynn DeClemente, Registrar of The Sculpture Foundation, Inc. and Adjunct Professor of Fine Art at The College of New Jersey will conduct a panel discussion focused on their collective thoughts about the artwork selected for exhibition, and the nature of the various media on view. During this presentation, jurors will also share their experiences with the process of choosing work for a community display.

August 12 Gallery Walk: Keith Haring Exhibition

Thurs., Aug. 12, 4 pm. Free with admission. Julia Gruen, Executive Director of the Keith Haring Foundation, will give you an inside look at Haring’s sculpture on view in the Museum Building for the Spring/Summer 2010 Exhibition Season. Space is limited. First come, first-serve.

August 28 Contemporary Sculpture “From the Beginning” with JoAnn Pelliccio-Lindgren

Sat., Aug. 28, 2 pm. Have you ever wondered about the history of contemporary sculpture or looked at a sculpture and thought “what is that” or “why is that considered art?” If so, take the opportunity to attend this talk. Learn from a trained art historian and studio artist about ways to look at art works aesthetically, elementally, and through basic principles. Consider the concept of artist and audience and the fact that we bring who we are to our experience of a work of art. JoAnn Pelliccio-Lindgren is a Senior Adjunct Instructor of Art Lecture Courses and Studio Art Courses at Burlington County College. This talk will take place indoors and outdoors. Space is limited. October 10 Founder’s Lecture: J. Seward Johnson

Sat., Oct. 10, 4:30pm. In conjunction with our special celebration of Art X, Grounds For Sculpture Founder J. Seward Johnson will conduct a lecture discussing his own artistic influences, in addition to his dream of a contemporary sculpture park which has now become a sustainable reality and a treasure to our community. October 23 Process Lecture: Found Object Sculpture with Artist In Residence Eric Schultz

Come learn about the process of creating a high caliber found object sculpture for GFS with the help of scores of volunteers. experience at Grounds For Sculpture! This four-session workshop will teach participants to look at their photographs in a new light while discovering the summer beauty of the sculpture park. An SLR or digital camera is required. Instructor: Sally Davidson. $55 Members; $65 Non-Members.

July Slipcasting and Moldmaking for 10,11,17,18 Adventurous Ceramists and Other Artists

July The Garment as Sculpture: 24, 31 A Fiber Arts Adventure

Sat. and Sun., July 10-11, 10:30 am – 4:30 pm Sat., July 17, 10:30 am – 3:30 pm and Sun., July 18, 12 – 3 pm July This class will teach the advanced technique of slipcasting and is geared for adventurous beginners and advanced ceramics students; 24, 31 students should have some clay experience. One–and two–part August plaster molds will be made then used for casting liquid clay or slip. 7, 14, 21, 28 In the course, you will learn to make molds from found objects and forms modeled in clay. While this technique is used in commercial production, fine artists use slipcasting to make editions or multiple objects in assemblages. Easy projects in the beginning of the class include a low-relief pressmold for tiles. When ready, students may move on to two–part molds. Individual instruction will accommodate multiple skill levels. Instructor: Debbie Reichard. $200 Members; $215 Non-Members.

August non-wearable sculptural model of a fantasy garment using a variety 7, 14, 21 of materials. Students will learn a variety of skills in working with fiber arts and non-traditional materials during weekly demonstrations, and will be assisted in taking their ideas and sketches to a finished sculptural piece. Cement Casting in Sand

10:30 am – 1:30 pm. Cement is a great, economical material for large or small sculptures, fountains, and functional objects. This casting method allows artists to create molds by carving or pressing objects into moist mason sand and clay. Additional objects can also be introduced into the sand mold, and pigments can be added before the cement is poured. This process creates art that can be placed outside and last a very long time. This process can easily be further developed at your home studio. Instructor: Rory Mahon. $130 Members, $145 Non-Members.

August Clay Monoprints Intensive Weekend Workshop 28, 29 Sat., Aug. 28 and Sun., Aug. 29, 10 am – 4 pm. Looking for something to do

at the end of the summer? Bring a friend for the weekend and learn the technique of clay monoprinting. Students will learn to make monoprints using colored clay, not ink, pulled from a slab of wet clay. This two-day workshop will teach how to apply colored clay slips to rolled-out wet slabs of stoneware clay, and apply them in layers until the desired design is achieved. The colored clay layers are then printed on canvas or paper. Enhance your learning with slide shows, demonstrations of clay printing each day, and two short DVDs. All materials are provided. September Art Wear: Recycled and Alternative 4, 11, 18, 25 Material Manipulation and Construction

October 10:30 am – 1:30 pm. Break from the trend of uniformity and go beyond the 2 idea that only fabric can be used to make garments. Students will be introduced to

traditional and experimental methods of sculptural garment construction focusing on the use of recycled and alternative materials. Students will experience spontaneous, in-class material collection and garment creation, while working with a variety of techniques including: basic hand-sewing; fusible webbing; creating small looms using dressmaker pins to create woven tapestry embellishments, and latch hooking. Students will be encouraged to explore their own unique interpretations of wearable sculpture. Instructor: C. Pazia Mannella. $130 Members; $145 Non-Members.

10th Anniversary Celebration Workshop

Sat., Sept. 11, 10:30am – 1:30pm. Best known for his colorful pop-art constructions depicting frenetic scenes of modern urban life, Red Grooms’ sculpture Henry Moore in a Sheep Meadow has turned heads at Grounds For Sculpture with its portrait of the famed British sculptor becoming one of his own sculptures. In this workshop you will delve into the life and work of Red Grooms, learning about his background and history and then creating individual “sculpto-pictorama,” a term that Grooms created to describe his mixed media installations combining painting and sculpture. Sculptural Ceramics: The Beauty of Repetition

10:30 am – 1:30 pm. This ceramics class features press-molding, low-relief tile-making, bisque stamp making and handbuilding. Perfect for intermediate students who want to explore molds as a way to make repeated objects, as well as incorporate found objects in their work (through the casting process). For the beginner, making a one piece tile mold, slump mold or hump mold is easy, allowing you to make many beautiful tiles, bowls, platters and sculpture. October Assemblage Sculpture with Found Objects 16, 23, 30 2:30 – 4:30pm. Deborah Butterfield creates animal sculpture of horses by using many types of objects in an assemblage method.

November The juxtapositions of items are often surprising in their design. 6

October Art Wear: 16, 23, 30 Garment Armature and Structure

November 10:30am – 1:30pm. Fundamentally, garments provide protection against the elements and preserve modesty. Beyond 6, 13, 20

simple utility, garments can also be a means of seduction by adding artificial attraction or enhancing nature. The body can be draped and bound in materials, to conceal, reveal, constrict, or expand the form. Students will experiment with armature and structural techniques including crochet, wirework, coiling, wet and needle felting to exaggerate movement, and enhance or distract the curves and shapes of the body. Students will be encouraged to explore their own unique interpretations of wearable sculpture. Instructor: C. Pazia Mannella. $110 Members; $125 non-Members.

November 13 10th Anniversary Workshop 10

Sat., Nov. 13, 10:30am – 1:30pm. In the Fall/Winter 2009 Exhibition Season, Herb Ferris’ Heart of Gold was added to the list of sculptures in the park. Using natural materials such as wood and stone, Ferris constructs his sculptures to work in harmony with the natural landscape. In this workshop, at his history and development as an artist, and then create your own sculptures by combining materials such as stone, wood, and metal. Deadline for registration is November 5. December 11 10th Anniversary Workshop 10

Sat., Dec. 11, 10:30am – 1:30pm. The kinetic sculpture of Lin Emery gives visible form to the energies moving through nature. Her elegant, highly reflective sculptures undulate and sway by way of wind, providing slight force, or by using magnets. In this workshop participants will look at her artistic influences and survey her long career before trying their hands at making small-scale kinetic sculptures using a variety of materials including paper, straws, wire, and magnets. Wellness Walks/Wellness Talks!

For the mature adult or folks who just want to get back into the swing. Join the professionals from Stoneking Physical Therapy and Wellness Center and a guide from GFS on walks throughout the beautiful gardens where mind and body can relax, enjoy, and learn more about the benefits of exercise! After the walks, join the group for a continental breakfast or happy hour and additional tips on keeping fit throughout your life. Walks start in July and continue throughout the summer and fall. September 9 “Painting Music”: A Workshop on Abstract Expressionist Art

Sun., Sept. 19, 1pm. Learn, appreciate and participate in making Abstract Expressionist paintings. Learn about the Abstract Expressionist movement and Wassily Kandinsky’s philosophy of “painting music.” Set yourself free while listening to classical music and create your own expressionistic painting by dripping, brushing, and smearing liquid paints, in addition to using paint directly from the tube. October 2 Pumpkin Carving Demonstration

Sat., Oct. 2, 2:30pm. Do you love carving pumpkins and want to learn more intricate carving methods? Watch Ashley Campbell, a talented pumpkin carver at work creating a profile sculpted pumpkin of a famous artist in the Park. Employ the “surface sculpted” technique of carving away the outside layer to reveal the fleshy interior to design a “ghoulish” face. Purchase specialized tool kits in the Museum Shop after the event and create your own work of art at home!

November 13 Gingerbread House Demonstration

Sat., November 13, 12pm. Free with park admission. Join the Rat’s Restaurant Pastry Team for a special “how to” gingerbread house demonstration and be amazed by the sweet sculptural techniques! Also, make a visit to Toad Hall and The Museum Shop and receive 20% off all regularly priced merchandise.

November 13 Gingerbread House Workshop

Sat., November 13, 1:30pm. Celebrate the holidays and learn this edible tradition. Combine gingerbread, frosting, candy, cookies and more to make your one- of-a-kind house. July 17 Young Artist Workshops

Repurposed Plastic

11 am – 12:15 pm. Create a sculpture using the work of Chakaia Booker as inspiration. While Chakaia uses rubber tires, students will use plastic bottles and push the material to its fullest extent by cutting, gluing, tying and folding. Instructor: April Zay.

A Sculptor’s Model

1 pm – 2:15 pm. In conjunction with the Spring/Summer 2010 Exhibition Season, young artists will be introduced to Keith Haring’s work in the galleries, with an emphasis on his large scale steel sculptures. They will return to the classroom to design and construct scaled down models of imaginary mythic sculptures. Instructor: Margareta Warlick. WORKSHOPS FOR 10 TO 14 YEAR OLDS:

Cast-offs Recreated

11 am – 12:15 pm. Create a sculptural relief using repurposed and re-used materials and create a repeated pattern using simple materials such as tire tubes, rubber pieces, metal mesh, and “findings” in the style of Chakaia Booker. Instructor: Margareta Warlick.

Crowded Cartoon Clusters

1 pm – 2:15 pm. Keith Haring is well known for his crazy cartoon images of people, objects and animals interacting with each other in creative and sometimes odd ways. Sat., November 6, 11am – 4pm. Free with park admission. Enjoy the fall weather and foliage at the Artist’s Spotlight. This year’s featured artist is Grounds For Sculpture’s artist-in-the-park and Board Member, Elizabeth Strong-Cuevas. Take part in our Young Artist Workshops, inspired by Strong-Cuevas’ work. In the morning, watch videos demonstrating her techniques and attend a special gallery talk with the sculptor in the afternoon. AGES 10 TO 14 Abstracted Silhouettes. 1 – 3pm Create your own abstracted plaster sculpture in the style of StrongCuevas’. White’s musical career has spanned more than 20 years. In honor of this, from August 8 through August 15, a photo exhibit of MM2 performing at Grounds For Sculpture throughout the decade will be on display – leading up to their annual performance in the park on August 15. On this day, MM2 presents a one-time performance of their new work, Emergence. Found in nature, emergence is the way complex systems and patterns arise out of simple interactions. How does a flock of birds or a school of fish move as one? When applied to dance movement, the interaction of each part with its immediate surroundings causes a complex chain of processes leading to some order. Grounds For Sculpture is proud to present the famed New York Songwriters Circle (NYSWC), in one of their very few appearances this side of the Lincoln Tunnel! The NYSWC, under the producing and directing credit of Singer/Songwriter Tina Shafer for the past 20 years, has been a legend in New York City’s West Village, joining bi-monthly at the famed Bitter End club. Past showcasing artists include Norah Jones, Lisa Loeb, Vanessa Carlton and Gavin DeGraw, among others. Additionally, past annual songwriting contest winners included artists such as Kate Voegele and Company of Thieves. For NYSWC’s Grounds For Sculpture performance, current featured songwriters are Tina Shafer, Mieka Pauley, Reed Waddle, Shaun Ruymen, Charlotte Sometimes, and Toby Lightman.

Outlet Dance Project Days of Dance Weekend October 2 & 3. The Outlet Dance Project incorporates sculptural elements in the park with original choreographed dances. This is a showcase for emerging female choreographers from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. This year, they have extended their program to include one day of workshops open to the public, in addition to a day of performance on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2pm. Creative Dance for Kids

Experience the Passion of Gypsy Flamenco Dancing

Sat., Oct. 2. 1 – 2pm. Learn the basic elements of flamenco dancing including: brazeo (arms and hand movements), zapateo (footwork), palmas (rhythmic hand clapping), and castanets (provided). From the dramatic baile/cante jondo (dramatic dance/song) to the sensuous rumbas with their Cuban influence, flamenco is a wonderful way to express yourself and give your body and soul a complete workout! Instructor: Lisa Botalico. This dance class is for men and women. Requirements – shoes with strong heel (no spikes!) and women: full skirt (if possible). $15 per class.

Public Moves Sculptural Space

Sat., Oct. 2. 9 – 4pm with break. Movement artists Joshua Bisset and Laura Quattrocchi of Shua Group will lead an all day workshop and performance at GFS. The workshop will culminate with an interactive public performance the following day. Open to all ages and abilities, the workshop will teach participants how to connect to each other through movement and sound. During the workshop, participants will build the performance of movement scores, which will interact with the landscape. Imagine the music of the Fab Four shaken up with infusions of bluegrass and jazz and topped off with a classical twist. The result: a satisfying musical cocktail called beatlegras. A typical beatlegras show begins with a medley of “Hello Goodbye, “ “Back in the USSR,” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” After that, expect an evening of surprises as the band takes some of your favorite Beatles songs and adds their own unique twist. Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of thirteen, beginning a 40-year career that has encompassed performance, songwriting, and teaching. Born in Boston and raised in North Carolina, Livingston is the fourth child in a very musical family that includes Alex, James, Kate, and Hugh. Livingston recorded his first record at age 18 and has continued to create well-crafted, introspective and original songs that have earned him listeners worldwide. From top-forty hits “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running,” to “I Can Dream of You” and “Boatman,” both recorded by his brother James, Livingston’s creative output has continued unabated. His musical knowledge inspires his varied repertoire, and he is equally at home in a range of musical genres – folk, pop, gospel, jazz – and upbeat storytelling to touching ballads.

The Seward Johnson Center for the Arts is a unique building with a modern event space which provides a clean slate to create your party. Simply designed, it is adorned with large-scale contemporary sculpture, giving it a museum ambience. A small terrace is accessible off the main event space and overlooks a romantic natural reflective pool surrounded by greenery.
