t the center of every family is its shared history. The events and memories that are built together over time are part of what bonds us together. At Grounds For Sculpture, this is no different. Our roots as the NJ State Fairgrounds, the development of the property, and the exhibitions, programs, and people combine to create a rich community that feels like an extended family. This is particularly poignant for me, as after 14 years I am moving on to another arts organization. Being a part of the growth of Grounds For Sculpture has been incredibly rewarding. In recent years, I have seen the membership program double in size along with expanded exhibitions, programs, and visitation. Change is part of growth, and with your input and involvement, GFS hopes to continue to grow sustainably and enjoyably together. I cherish the time I have spent here, all that I have experienced and learned, and the friends I have made. This issue of newscasting takes a look at some of the ways history and family are a part of everything that Grounds For Sculpture has to offer — from volunteer experiences to community outreach and more. Arianne Kassof Library in the Member Lounge Now Online Due to the efforts of GFS volunteer and former librarian, Olga Dytyniak, the Arianne Kassof Library has a new catalogue system that is available for viewing online. Just go to librarything.com/catalog/grounds and you will be able to search the collection of books available in the Member Lounge. When you stop in, you will also notice that the books have been nicely organized and categorized by color so they are easy to find. Come by and catch up on some reading! On Saturday, May 9, more than 600 GFS members participated in the first Member Preview Day. Members were invited to this exclusive preview of the spring/summer season with artists, Jae Ko, Karl and Jonas Stirner, Robert Lobe, and Lauren Clay. They enjoyed special programming that included guest artist speakers, tours of the park led by curator, Tom Moran, a film screening, conservation demonstrations, a quilling workshop, musical entertainment and delicious food from the Peacock and Van Gogh Cafés. aybe it’s because I started working here in 1984, when Grounds For Sculpture was just the eccentric dream of our visionary founder, that I take for granted exactly how vast a project this has been. In the beginning I was asked to secure and stabilize the ruin of what had been the New Jersey State Fairgrounds. Abandoned buildings, broken windows, thousands of pigeons, piles of rubble, and waist-high weeds greeted me across a flat and nearly treeless twelve-acre expanse. This was supposed to be turned into a highly unusual public garden dedicated to the

display of three-dimensional art. Every year since then has brought new projects and sometimes seemingly insurmountable challenges that we addressed day by day. The garden took shape and gradually became what you see today. It continues to grow and evolve, a living thing, drawing visitors to interact with the sculpture displayed in its unique landscape. It’s when I look at the photographs of what was here before that I am modestly awestruck by what has been accomplished.

Shaping Sound A New, Members Only Performance Series Supported by GFS Members By Rena Perrone, Curator of Performing Arts

rounds For Sculpture is proud to present a members only performance series entitled Shaping Sound, on the first three Thursdays in November. Funding for this series has been provided in part by two Grounds For Sculpture members, Michael Chang and Robert Herrig. This special series was created to present a multi-layered approach to the Fall/Winter exhibition season at GFS, exclusively for our dedicated membership.

Each performance promises to transform the indoor gallery exhibitions to create an immersive sight and sound experience. It’s an indoor season of art and performance unlike any other. Following the performance, meet the performers over cocktails and light hors d’oeuvres during an intimate reception. To round out the evening with an artful flair for fare, you’re invited to Rat’s Restaurant to enjoy an optional pre fixe dinner package. On Thursday, November 5, our series opens in the East Gallery with West Windsor-based orchestra Sinfonietta Nova, performing Pulitzer-Prize winning composer John Luther Adams’s Dream in White On White, among other works. Adams’s music encompasses the native cultures and life of Alaska; indicative of the vast landscape of the country. With a melodic effect that is slow and a bit spacey, this featured work evokes the treeless, windswept 6

expanses of Western Alaska – a musical counterpart to Jae Ko’s installation of Force of Nature, 白Shiro. If you missed them at this year’s Anniversary Arts Party, Thursday, November 12th is another opportunity to catch the Graffito Works improvisational dance with movement and music spontaneously created and inspired by the textured and anodized aluminum wall reliefs of Robert Lobe: In the Forest Drawn of Metal featuring Forest Projects, Collaborative Works with Kathleen Gilje. Walk among the dancers as they create movement that examines the textural nuances, along with interplay of the unnatural and unpredictable in the physical world. Closing the series, the Princeton University student ensemble Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk) highlights the International Sculpture Center’s exhibition season by creating unconventional sonic sounds via modified electronic sources, laptops, and custom speakers. Information regarding these events will be announced on the GFS website, and included in our new event guide. Tickets will be limited to ensure an intimate experience. We do hope to see you there! A Grounds For Sculpture History: The Land in Pictures and Words By Lillian Ciuffreda, member of the Princeton Photography Club and Grounds For Sculpture

rounds For Sculpture (GFS) changed my life. My husband, Mark Poiani, and I discovered GFS in the summer of 2006 when I retired to care for my mother who was diagnosed with dementia. As my mother’s condition deteriorated, GFS became our primary “get away” providing us with a sanctuary, a “mini vacation” for a day. During this time, I developed an interest in photography and in 2010 was a merit award winner in GFS’s Focus on Sculpture exhibition. Carl Geisler, the president of the Princeton Photography Club, was the other merit award recipient that year. The night of the opening we met Carl and his wife, Sheila, immediately developed a rapport with them, and accepted their invitation to join the Princeton Photography Club. In January 2014, I was asked to be the chairperson for the exhibition that the Princeton Photography Club would be coordinating with GFS and was delighted to have the opportunity to “give back” to both the Princeton Photography Club and GFS. A Grounds For Sculpture History: The Land in Pictures and Words will be on display from September 19 to November 1, 2015 in the Education Gallery and adjacent Conference Room in the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts. The exhibition will include images created by Princeton Photography Club members, newspaper articles from the Hamilton Historical Society, memorabilia from the New Jersey State Fairgrounds, and photographs from the Grounds For Sculpture archival collection. his year, Grounds For Sculpture (GFS) partnered with the Princeton Area Community Foundation to facilitate a series of informal but important conversations with our members and donors to talk about why and how we support our local community, the value that it brings and how it makes us feel. In July, we focused our conversation on the “Thank you for a wonderful and informative many reasons families give together, such as workshop.--thinking about what values you want to pass transmitting values from on to your children is so important.” Jaqueline Alberts one generation to another, experiencing joy together, and passing on life lessons or financial concepts. Using tools that can be used with both children and adults to discuss“family mission statements,”we shared some personal stories about how our families influenced us with their causes and how that made an impact on what we support. We talked about starting volunteer activities as a family such as participating in walks that benefit parks and nature; providing food and company for the homeless, and volunteering at an animal shelter. A FAMILY LEGACY

his newsletter focuses on family and history; the value placed on supporting the causes that you are passionate about as a family, and how collectively your actions and support can have a positive and meaningful impact on the community. This passion and dedication has clearly been demonstrated here at Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), earlier this year Mr. and Mrs. Johnson contributed a significant gift to GFS through the Johnson Art and Education Foundation “For 30 years, I have devoted my time and resources to developing this wonderful, now magical place,” says Johnson The gift, worth in excess of $130M, includes much of the park property, several of its buildings, and more than 370 sculptures from The Sculpture Foundation—all now owned by GFS as a result of this transfer—which is a huge change. A gift of this magnitude is incredibly exciting and increases the organization’s assets exponentially—but it also requires tremendous fiscal responsibility and strategic planning. “I am committed to working with Grounds For Sculpture over the next few years for a successful transition, but ultimately they will call upon the larger community to ensure that the park remains a shared treasure,” says Johnson. 8

In anticipation of this gift, GFS began paving the way toward successful self-sustainability with a multi-tiered strategic plan. It grew its Board of Trustees because strong and effective leadership helps to ensure smart decisions. And because our members are among our best champions and greatest resources, we reinvigorated our membership program to extend new opportunities to you, our corps of visionary supporters. As we recognize our founder for his generous contributions and uphold his vision to draw people into a landscape with sculpture, we also look to the future of GFS and our growing community. With your trust and support, this wonderful cultural gem can continue as ever, and remain a valued part of the community. GFS will continue to provide robust programming and superb exhibitions, and to serve as a visually rich natural environment further activated by hundreds of familiar and beloved sculptures. We’re in for amazing things—and if there’s one thing you can be sure of, it’s that you’ll always find something new here—a new way to engage with art, a new way to spend important time with friends, family, or by yourself, or a new exhibition to wander through. rounds For Sculpture (GFS) is pleased to announce the addition of two new members to its board of trustees. Our two new board members were chosen for their extraordinary commitment to the arts and the incredible and varied expertise each possesses. Newly appointed board members include Penelope B. Lattimer, Director of the Rutgers Institute for Improving Student Achievement and The New Jersey School Development Council at Rutgers, The State University, Graduate School of Education (RIISA); and Marco B. Cucchi, the President and owner of Thomas Sweet Chocolate Companies based in Princeton, New Jersey. “I am so pleased to welcome Penelope and Marco, each of whom brings a tremendous love of the arts and an understanding of their power and necessity in the community; their professional expertise in education and business development truly complements our governing board. With their added guidance and leadership, GFS will continue to grow as a strong, sustainable organization that serves as a resource and asset for the community,”says Gary Schneider, GFS Executive Director Dr. Lattimer joined the RIISA team as Assistant Director in 2007 and was named Director in 2011. Dr. Lattimer is involved in the development of RIISA’s work, specifically addressing middle level education as well as arts integration. She also seeks to build networks and partnerships among districts with similar needs and interests in the central region of New Jersey. She is responsible for working with NJ school districts to build networks and partnerships with RIISA and the GSE. Ms. Penelope Lattimer is the Director of the Rutgers Institute to Improve Student Achievement Staff. She was formerly New Jersey State Assistant Commissioner of Education, and she was the Assistant Superintendent for the Curriculum and Instruction, and Principal at Gibbons High School in New Brunswick, NJ. She is the author of Beloved Educators: Women of Color Who Inspire Us. She is a Trustee of the Children’s Specialized Hospital and former Board member for the National Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts. Additionally, she chaired the Crossroads Theatre Board and currently serves on the George Street Playhouse Board. She lives in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Mr. Cucchi has served as President and owner of Thomas Sweet since 2005 and is responsible for managing the retail, wholesale, and franchising of its proprietary ice creams, chocolates, and coffees. Prior to owning Thomas Sweet, Mr. Cucchi specialized in customer strategy consulting primarily in the financial services industry. He has over 15 years of financial services industry experience and has specialized in CRM strategy and process improvement in both front and back-office functions. He has advised clients in the Consumer Banking, Investment Banking, and Insurance disciplines. Mr. Cucchi co-authored the Value-Based Customer Relationship Methodology (vCRM) which was used as the global method for CRM Strategy development at IBM. He also co-authored other material including an article for the Direct Marketing Association entitled, Positioning CRM Programs for Value Creation. Marco holds an MBA in Marketing & Finance from Fordham University and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Delaware. Marco lives with his family in Belle Mead, New Jersey. he United Way of Greater Mercer County brought over 400 area volunteers to the Strike Out Hunger event at Grounds For Sculpture on June 23rd. The event featured families helping families as the volunteers created and packaged healthy oatmeal breakfasts which were distributed to food banks across New Jersey for families in need. Volunteers packaged 72,000 meals between 8a.m. and 2p.m. at the one-day event. In New Jersey over 375,000 children are food insecure, or roughly 18% of the State’s children. In Mercer County alone over 12,900 children, or 15.6% of the county’s children are food insecure. With the close of the school season, children receiving free/reduced breakfasts and lunches no longer have access to those free meals. The summer for most children means a break from classes. For many underprivileged children it means dealing with the stress and insecurity of not knowing how or when they will receive their next meal. The summer season is particularly busy at food banks and pantries as families try to bridge the gap between their income and food needs. “Access to fresh and healthy meals can be a challenge – especially in vulnerable and underserved populations. United Way’s Day of Caring is an important day of service and Grounds For Sculpture is not only a proud sponsor, but a proud participant as well,” said Gary Schneider, Executive Director of Grounds For Sculpture. The emergency food provider system in New Jersey depends on donations of non-perishable food, money, and residents volunteering their time at food banks, food pantries or soup kitchens. If you are interested in donating non-perishable food, money, or volunteering your time please contact your local food bank or soup kitchen.
