3 months of sizzling programs and events to turn old man winter on his ear and give you and your family warmth and delight at every turn. The park of course is open year-round and it is spectacular in the winter! We keep the main paths free of snow and increasingly put into service our multi-person trams to help you tour. After sunset the park is ablaze with thousands of lights transforming it into a magical wonderland that kids of all ages will love. Check out our after-six hours beginning with our Lights On! celebration on November 24th and running throughout December. Each month has a theme and is filled with both GFS favorites and new features. December? Well it’s “Holiday Happenings” of course…the artisan boutique gift shop, carolers in the park, the American Boy Choir, children’s theatre, cookie decorating, tram rides and more. January? We call it “Warmth in Winter”… A New Year’s Day brunch at Rat’s, the red hot Nai Ni Chen Dance Company, cooking classes, and curling up with a good book at the GFS Book Club. February? It’s all about “Searching For Spring”… the Annual Groundhog Day and Valentine’s Day festivities, a fabulous Passage to India Dinner, and the return of date night at the Black Maria Film Festival. Throughout it all, our spacious indoor galleries feature five diverse and powerful sculpture exhibitions! So let the winter winds blow as they may. ABOUT GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), a magical place where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully positioned on meticulously landscaped parklands full of thousands of exotic trees and flowers. It is a feast for the senses. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin. They join the enchanting works of our visionary founder Seward Johnson as well as many others by the finest up and coming artists of our time. Join us and discover the beauty, charm, whimsy, and inspiration that our 42 acres hold. The collection and exhibits at Grounds For Sculpture contain art works that may be of a challenging, sensitive and/or mature nature. Please be aware and consult GFS staff for advice if you have specific concerns. TOURING AT GFS Grounds For Sculpture, open and accessible year-round (we keep the main paths plowed in winter), annually conducts over 500 docent-led tours for its guests. Sculpture site maps, tree tour brochures, and touch tours for the visually impaired (require advance reservations) are all available at the Visitor’s Center. Group tours of 15 or more, scheduled and paid in advance, receive a discount. School groups are free TuesdayFriday with advance reservations. Call (609) 586-0616 for your group tour. ACCESSIBILITY Grounds For Sculpture is a leader in designing its facilities and programs to serve persons with disabilities. The Domestic Arts Building is fully accessible as is the Visitor’s Center and the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts. The Museum Building, fully accessible on the first floor, has images available of artwork on its mezzanine level. Large print editions of information and brochures are available in all three buildings. Special vehicles are available to assist persons who have mobility impairments with two weeks advance notice. Touch tours for the visually impaired may be arranged with advance reservations. HAND-BLOWN GLASS AW ORNAMENT WORKSHOP Saturday, December 1, 11am–4pm No glass blowing experience needed! Learn the old world craft of using Glaskolben tubes and a torch to make hand-blown glass ornaments. In this fun and easy class, create 10 glass ornaments perfect for decorations or holiday gifts. Bring a shoe box and packing materials (tissue paper, bubble wrap, etc.) to transport your ornaments home. All other materials provided at workshop. Miller for a master class using GFS’s 42-acres and 270 sculptures as inspiration and subject. Miller will provide pointers on composition and perspective to help you hone your skills. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors. A digital point and shoot camera or digital SLR camera is required. BLACK MARIA FILM FESTIVAL Saturday, February 16, 7:30pm For over 30 years, NJ’s own Black Maria Film Festival (BMFF) has won acclaim for promoting independent filmmaking by widely exhibiting works by veteran and emerging film and video makers. The festival’s annual juried competition results in 40 to 60 works from around the country for its annual tour. GFS is proud to present the Festival with specially curated selections by BMFF Founder John Columbus sure to delight and inspire. ALL SEASON LONG IN THE GALLERIES ROBERT TAPLIN: Heaven, Hell, and the History of Punch (through April 2013) In the Museum, experience three deeply compelling installations by figurative sculptor Robert Taplin, each of which brim with references to contemporary life as seen through the lens of ancient creation mythology, Dante’s Inferno, or the 17th century Italian trickster character of Punch. INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE CENTER’S 18th Annual Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture (through March 2013) On the main floor of the Domestic Arts Building, view the future of contemporary sculpture as 12 of the most talented sculpture students in the world exhibit their award-winning work in the 18th annual International Sculpture Center and GFS collaborative exhibition.

MARK PARSONS: Mapping Memories (through March 2013) The Mezzanine of the Domestic Arts Building features Redline, the massive handmade paper sculpture created by 2012 GFS Artist-in-Residence Mark Parsons and the GFS community. Redline is surrounded by photos, videos and recorded interviews that document the concept, process, and fabrication of the artwork. In spring 2013, this large piece will be sited in the park, where GFS visitors will witness its gradual erosion from the forces of nature to reveal an inner meaning. Funded in part by Provident Bank Foundation. MING FAY: Canutopia (through July 2013) The inaugural installation in GFS’s new 7,500 sq. ft. East Gallery features Ming Fay’s Canutopia, a lush and colorful playground for the senses—a one-ofa-kind botanical utopia filled with fantastic oversized plants, seeds, and vines that burst with colors you can almost taste. FOCUS ON SCULPTURE (opening January 19, 2013 with a reception for GFS Members and invited guests only from 4-6pm) In the Education Gallery, view our annual juried exhibition of work by talented amateur photographers who use sculpture as subject or inspiration. This year’s distinguished juror is Michael S. Miller, a nationally recognized photographer whose work includes scenic New Jersey and America’s National Parks. And don’t miss Miller’s talk on the works in Focus on Sculpture and his selection process on Saturday, February 9 at 11am. See page 15 for more information. Free with park admission.

IN THE MEADOW

(through July 2013)

MYTHOS: Visions from Mythology and Legend MYTHOS reveals the explorations by seven artists into our imagination and creation of myths to explain our universe, condition, and plight. Representing a wide variety of mythological themes and sculptural mediums, MYTHOS features over 25 works by Dana Stewart, Michele Oka Doner, Nina Levy, and Marsha Pels out in The Meadow and continues in the park with Carlos Dorrien’s The Nine Muses and Athena Tacha’s Labrynthos—a site-specific earthwork, and Bruce Lindsay’s Sisyphus, both on view in the Museum Building. BENAR VENET: Arcs and Indeterminate Lines Three of Venet’s extraordinary immense, but lyrical steel sculptures are sited this season. In 2011, Venet, an artist of international renown whose work is rarely exhibited in the US, was featured on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. He was also the winner of International Julio González Prize for the year of 2013. ROBERT TAPLIN: Further History of Punch To complement Taplin’s Punch in The Museum Building, his large-scale Punch is Homeless—a major new outdoor work commissioned for this exhibition, and The Young Punch Goes Shopping with His Mother, are shown together for the first time. PATRICK STRZELEC: BALL JOINT Six of Strzelec’s major steel works from the past 10 years are the focus of this exhibition. His sculptures focus on the metaphorical and psychological associations of forms; and, although his constructions seem to reference specific objects, their precise meaning often remains mysterious and elusive.

FOCUS ON SCULPTURE JUROR’S LECTURE: MICHAEL S. MILLER Saturday, February 9, 11am Michael S. Miller, juror for Focus on Sculpture 2013, will discuss his selection process and the works on view. Miller’s nature, adventure and editorial images have been published nationally. He is the Director of Photography at Visions Photographic Workshops, is a certified Adobe Photoshop master, who specializes in color management. CREATING A FOUR-COURSE DINNER Track One (Mondays) January 7, 14, 21, 28, 6pm Track Two (Tuesdays) January 8, 15, 22, 29, 6pm Join Chef Cash and his culinary team for our fourth season of these popular cooking classes. Learn to prepare a four-course menu using local and sustainable ingredients. Each week will be dedicated to a different course. Rat’s resident wine expert, Alan Hallmark, will present wine and beverage pairings and tastings to help you select the perfect ones for your meal. Tuition for each four-week session is $340 per student, must be pre-paid, and is non-refundable. ADVANCED TECHNIQUES Track One (Mondays) February 4, 11, 18, 25, 6pm Track Two (Tuesdays) February 5, 12, 19, 26, 6pm For individuals with advanced culinary knowledge and skills, this four-week course will emphasize fabrication, butchering, sauce-making, and presentation and will be led by Shane Cash. Tuition is $375 per student, must be pre-paid, and is non-refundable. Students must select the Monday or Tuesday track. Class size is limited to 12 students.
