Bringing water into children’s play areas aims to respond to two challenges that are present across a number of London’s housing estates,
Integrating play opportunities into the sustainable drainage system also offers a cost effective way to retrofit play areas across the city, introducing wildlife and biodiversity to spaces which are in too many cases sterile and uninspiring hard surfaced areas.
The idea of play within the sustainable drainage system is a way of unlocking some of the cities hidden processes by creating a visual and interactive story about the journey of water. This visual and interactive injection to the classic sustainable drainage system looks to provide environmental education to children portraying the delicate process of water collection in the city.
SUDS FOR PLAY AREAS
Tylney house has a mix of green, hard-surfaced and play spaces that are currently disconnected and very underused. Our response is about connecting these spaces with a visual and interactive sustainable drainage system which introduces new uses and relationships to the outdoor areas.

6. Community growing boxes will also replace fencing surrounding the play area. The aim of placing growing boxes close to the play area will be to provide activity and interest to older groups of the local community whilst creating a relationship between children’s and adult recreation. The location of the boxes seeks to provide some natural surveillance from adult activity overlooking the play area.
