LEGENDS IN CONCERT
For more than 34 years, Legends in Concert has set the standard for live tribute shows. Talented artists replicate the styles and sounds of some of the world’s most legendary performers, from Elvis Presley to Dolly Parton and Bruno Mars. “The singers constantly improvise, so they go off and joke with the audience or answer questions,” said Chris Beattie, general regional manager at the theater. “The crowd loves the interaction.” The acts alternate seasonally throughout the year so visitors can experience different versions of the show. During the spring, many student groups come to town for competitions and other scholastic events, so the tribute lineup caters to a younger demographic, with tribute artists who depict singers such as Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga. In the summertime, when many families visit for vacation, the show brings in acts with more broad appeal, recreating the likes of Presley, the Blues Brothers, Steven Tyler and Prince. Opening the spring of 2018, the Asher Theatre centers on wholesome, family-style entertainment, presenting an eclectic offering of tribute shows, jazz concerts, karaoke nights and more. The name of the theater derives from the biblical tribe of Asher, which means “joy” and “happiness.” “We’re committed to bringing people together from all walks of life and enhancing their lives through entertainment,” said Grace Stephens, who co-founded the theater with her husband, James. After traveling the world as a professional comedian and celebrity impersonator for more than 20 years, James Stephens decided to return to his roots in South Carolina and give his one-man tribute show, “Man of a Thousand Voices,” a permanent stage in Myrtle Beach. During the show, Stephens transitions flawlessly between impressions of music legends like Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Prince and Lil’ Wayne, adding a touch of his trademark humor. One of the characteristics that sets the Stephens family apart from other entertainers is their passion for youth. The 1.4 million-gallon aquarium carries all kinds of strange and wonderful sea critters, from 14-foot sawfish to giant stingrays and sea dragons. “Thanks to our location by the beach, it’s more of an educational and hands-on experience, especially for people who might be afraid of jellyfish or swimming in the water,” said Alexia Edge, sales manager at the aquarium. In 2013, the museum received the prestigious Elizabeth O’Neil Verner Award for Outstanding Arts Organization. Over the years, the museum has showcased the talents of acclaimed artists like Ansel Adams, Frank Lloyd Wright and Norman Rockwell, as well as South Carolina natives Brian Rutenberg and Jonathan Green. Other rotating exhibitions have focused on engaging youthoriented subjects such as “Goodnight Moon,” “Babar,” “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and the golden age of animated films. SOUTH CAROLINA HALL OF FAME
At the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, the South Carolina Hall of Fame commemorates prominent figures throughout South Carolina’s history, giving students the opportunity to learn about the Palmetto State’s rich background. Each of the 80 portraits on display features a small biography beneath that describes the individual’s contributions to the state and why they were instrumental to history. Though the museum no longer commissions portraits of the inductees, new inductees are honored at the annual induction ceremony and added to the museum’s audiovisual displays. Visitors can access one of the touch-screen kiosks to watch three-minute documentaries on each inductee.

Though small, the park attracts thousands of visitors each year as one of the most popular camping locations in the region. Guests can choose from six cabins and more than 300 campsites nestled under the cover of live oak trees and Southern magnolias, with a salty ocean breeze rising over the dunes. Horseback riding, bird-watching, biking, geocaching and swimming are just a few of the recreational opportunities available. On the fishing pier, visitors can relish the ocean view, grab a bite to eat from the snack bar and

Along the one-mile stretch of beach, groups can comb the shoreline for shells and keep an eye out for loggerhead turtles. The Yaupon and Sculpted Oak Nature Trails wind through one of the last remaining sections of maritime forest on the northern coast of South Carolina and are lined with towering oaks, wax myrtles, poplars and more. Inside the education center, visitors will find educational exhibits as well as a wildlife habitat with live reptiles, birds and butterflies. There are also two self-guided scavenger hunts that take guests through key points of the park, highlighting various aspects of native plants,

Groups can climb aboard the New Inlet Princess for a deep-sea-fishing voyage along the Continental Shelf and Gulf Stream, where many bottom feeders such as grouper, sea bass and snapper can be found. Thanks to a luxurious climate-controlled cabin, visitors can escape the elements and enjoy the ride any time of year.
JET-SKIING AT CRAZY SISTER MARINA
To learn more about the native environment, young travelers can join the Saltwater Marsh Eco Tour, a twohour boat excursion through the sweeping grasses of the Murrells Inlet salt marsh. Guided by an experienced marine naturalist, groups will encounter all kinds of wildlife, including crabs, oysters, sea turtles, herons and the occasional alligator. At one point, the guide pulls a real crab trap out of the water to show visitors the scuttling creatures up close. Later on, groups get the chance to step off the boat and comb the sandy shoreline for shells and other ocean treasures. One of the marina’s newest offerings is a pirate-ship adventure aboard the Barefoot Bounty where passengers can enjoy activities like face painting, water-cannon battles and treasure hunts. Specialty cruises such as dolphin sightseeing cruises, guided kayak tours and salt marsh cruises are available as well. After an adventurous afternoon on the water, visitors can stroll down the Marshwalk and grab a bite to eat at one of the local seafood restaurants, such as the Wicked Tuna, which offers an excellent view of the waterfront. HUNTINGTON BEACH STATE PARK
Within a 15-minute drive from downtown Myrtle Beach, Huntington Beach State Park offers 2,500 acres of serene beaches and marshland. Along the boardwalks and hiking paths, visitors will discover a vast and colorful ecosystem teeming with wildlife such as alligators, loggerhead turtles and more than 300 species of birds.

Surf fishing, boating, geocaching, camping, hiking and bird-watching are all popular activities. Student groups can stop by the education center for wildlife programs on turtles, geology, reptiles and insects. The park was founded during the Great Depression in the 1930s by well-known philanthropists Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, who also built the magnificent sculpture garden Brookgreen Gardens on the opposite side of Highway 17. “Both sides of the highway tell a very important story of the Huntingtons,” said Brenda Magers, who manages the park. “The Huntingtons had the vision and forward thinking to create a nature preserve during a time when many plantations were being purchased by hunting clubs.” Visitors can explore the enchanting ruins of Atalaya Castle, which once served as the Huntingtons’ winter home and sculpture studio. Each year in September, the Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival draws thousands of art lovers to the park; it is followed by the Atalaya Fall Festival and Haunted Castle in late October.

Many groups enjoy stopping along the causeway near the park entrance for a sweeping view of brackish water on one side and the salt marsh on the other. “You can see a huge array of birds, and alligators are prominently visible from there,” said Magers. “There isn’t a day of the year that you won’t find people out there.” WWW.SOUTHCAROLINAPARKS.COM/ HUNTINGTON-BEACH

For more than 60 years, Hurricane Fleet Marina has treated visitors to exceptional deep-sea-fishing experiences and educational cruises along the Gulf Stream of the Atlantic Ocean. Led by an experienced ship crew, passengers can sail over ocean reefs and wrecks up to 15 miles offshore, and reel in fish like king mackerel, barracuda, cobia sharks, sea bass and yellow fin tuna. Guests are welcome to pack their own lunches or order something to eat from the ship’s snack bar. For those more interested in sightseeing than fishing, Hurricane Fleet also offers a Dolphin Adventure Cruise aboard a 90-foot vessel. During this unusual experience, the cruise ship sails alongside a working shrimp boat so passengers can watch as the fishermen harvest their catches. Porpoises and sharks sometimes feed off the “bycatches,” fish unintentionally caught in the shrimp nets, providing a great opportunity for photographs. After a boating excursion, groups would be remiss not to sample fresh seafood from one of the neighboring restaurants in Calabash, which claims the title Seafood Capital of the World.
