2022 Groves Summer High School Academic Program

Gain Confidence.

Get ready for fall and gain confidence this summer with courses for students entering grades 9-11 in Math, Multi-level Writing, and Study/Organizational Skills.

This program is highly suited for High School students with a learning disability, such as dyslexia, and/or an attention disorder, such as ADHD, that affects academic achievement.

Within a small, structured, and supportive environment, students receive a review of learned skills and an introduction to new skills to get a head start on their upcoming school year.

Those who are enrolled in both morning and afternoon classes have a lunch period from 11:55am-12:15pm. Students must bring their own lunch.

Three session times are offered and students have the flexibility to apply for 1, 2, or all 3 classes.

MATH REVIEW

Math classes take an interactive approach to refining mathematical concepts. Students will learn and practice through direct, multi-sensory instruction at their own level and pace. Please self-select the appropriate class level based on the student’s needs. PRE-ALGEBRA/ALGEBRA REVIEW Section 1 Time: 8:45-10:15am Section 2 Time: 10:20-11:50am

STUDY/ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS

This class orients students to vital elements of learning and provides strategies designed to improve executive function/organizational skills. Students will be introduced to note-taking tools and learn strategies to enhance comprehension through active reading and summary writing, and explore various approaches for organizing materials and time management. Section 1 Time: 8:45-10:15am Section 2 Time: 10:20-11:50am Section 3 Time: 12:20-1:50pm

WRITING STRATEGIES LEVELS 1 AND 2

Both writing classes provide students with foundational skills needed to be successful in producing written compositions across various content areas. Please choose the appropriate writing level for yourstudent based on the descriptions below. It may bebeneficial to discuss this with your student’s English/Writing teacher to determine the appropriate level. WRITING

STRATEGIES LEVEL 1 Focuses on sentence and paragraph structure.

• Fragments / run-ons / complete sentences

• Sentence combining and expansion strategies

• Coordinating and subordinating conjunctions

• Generating topic and concluding sentences

• Single Paragraph Outline (SPO)

• Revision strategies, summary writing, andwriting process

WRITING STRATEGIES LEVEL 2 Focuses on higher-level strategies to assist students withstructuring longer form essays.

• Writing persuasive and narrative essays

• Writing strong thesis statements
