Welcome Spring! When I think of spring in Chico, I think of bright colors from the new growth of leaves and flowers, longer days, and outdoor family fun. This spring, we will be sure to attend many local events; there are so many activities from which to choose. Growing Up Chico Magazine always looks forward to meeting the community and sharing about our magazine. DeAnna Holman DeAnna is a 5th grade teacher at Ponderosa Elementary School in Paradise and mother of three who is working as a freelance writer, editor, and graphic artist (She also owns a booth at Eight and Main Antiques). She does layouts and assists in editing Growing Up Chico! She obtained her BS from USC and her teaching credential from CSU, Chico. DeAnna is also a breast cancer survivor! She lives on an almond orchard in Durham with her husband, kids, dogs, and cats.

The Caper Acres Renovation Project was created in 2010, recommended by the City of Chico, Parks Division. The creative minds of Chico children, coupled with local landscape architects, resulted in the innovative Caper Acres Master Plan that was approved in 2014. Connie Wright Connie Wright and Associates won first place in the commercial division of the Pioneer Day Parade from 2005 thru 2009. In 2010, Connie began helping with the parade and for the past three years has been Co-Director of the parade with Richard Elsom. Connie founded the Dog Parade & Chili Cook-Off in 2009 through 2012 to help raise money for Chico Unified School District art and bands during the recession. Connie practices commercial real estate financing and was instrumental in development of the Downtown parking garage at 3rd & Salem and the remodel of the Safeway Shopping Center on Mangrove.

The Pioneer Day Parade 2018 Celebrates The Chico Promise A Journey of Learning Preschool through Masters!
I
t is with great honor and excitement that we announce Gayle Hutchinson, President of Chico State University, will be a Grand Marshall in the Pioneer Day Parade on May 5th, 2018, along with Samia Yaqub, President of Butte College, and Kelly Staley, Superintendent of the Chico Unified School District. These women will lead the Pioneer Day Parade opening. We stand in awe of their educational accomplishments. It is truly a milestone to have them together in this parade!

or the past 20 years, there has been a group of Chico community volunteers who have worked long and hard to bring back the Pioneer Day Parade as a wholesome community/ family/children event. Last year, we celebrated 100 years from when Normal School gave annual tours to Chico High School students with lunch and a variety show which eventually became the Pioneer Day Parade.

his year’s parade will have something for everyone, but most of all, our children. The primary,

middle school, and senior high schools throughout Chico will be participating, including the music departments of band, choral, dance, and drama. School bands from throughout northeastern California will be invited to perform in this year’s parade.
parade entertainment starting at 9:30 and programs covering all of the parade activities will be passed out by college volunteers.

he parade will kick-off with a middle school and senior high school art contest to provide a colorful poster to hang throughout Chico, showing the sponsors and the parade information. The prize will be $300.00 cash, provided by the Chico Women’s Club which started out as an art club with Annie Bidwell in 1913.

he parade starts at 10:00 AM with a pancake breakfast, before the parade, at 8:00 AM. After the parade, there will be a hamburger barbecue in the Plaza and performances by students from Chico Unified and Chico State.

Theodor Seuss Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss, is best known for authoring more than 60 children’s books. Celebrate his birthday on March 2nd, and snuggle up with your little one, to read some of his silly rhymes. Then, head to the kitchen for a simple, Seuss-inspired treat! Items Needed: Clear Cups Blue Jell-O Gummy Fish Candies Directions: Follow the directions on the Jell-O package and pour into cups. Let it set for at least one hour. Easter Eggs and Bunny Hops: It’s S-P-R-I-N-G!! Start saving those egg shells for a super fun, albeit a bit messy, creative experience!! There’s something magical about using your entire body to create art. Give it a try! See how your little one likes Egg Splatter Painting!! Items Needed: Large, White Banner Paper or Poster Board Hollowed Egg Shells (try to save as much of the egg cup as possible) Washable Tempera Paint Dish Soap Tissue Paper (cut into 1 inch squares) White Glue Directions: Rinse hollowed egg shells and allow them to dry over several days. When you’re ready to paint, mix the washable tempera paint with some of the dish soap. There really is not a measured amount; just add a little soap to the paint to make clean-up a little easier at the end. Pour the soap/paint mixture into the hollowed egg shells. Apply a small amount of white glue to the egg shell around the opening and glue the 1 inch tissue square over the top, closing the egg with the paint inside. Allow the tissue covering to dry enough to handle –we allowed ours to dry overnight. Hang the banner paper or poster board outside. We did ours against a fence in the grass to make clean-up easy and to give the paper support and strength to withstand the eggs thrown at it. Pass out the paint-filled eggs to you (yes, YOU too!!) and your young artists and HAVE AT IT! Trust me; they will know exactly what to do! You will have so much fun crunching the egg shells, splattering the paint, and watching the colorful explosions on paper. Have your camera ready…it promises to be an experience to remember!!
“I love you a bushel and a peck…A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck!” February puts love in the air! Making homemade Valentines and sharing them, is especially fun for little ones. It can be as simple as a scribbled love note to an elaborate, glitter sprinkled masterpiece. Whichever path you choose, the fun is limitless! Here’s a simple idea for making a valentine that captures your child’s tiny handprints: Love Bouquets. Items Needed: White Construction Paper Markers Large, Washable Ink Stamp Pad Directions: Press child’s hand into the ink pad. Press handprints onto the construction paper for flowers. Using markers, draw flower stems from each handprint flower. Decorate with bows, hearts, flowers, and sentiments.

Sometimes it’s a Big Deal By Edward Bruno D.D.S., M.S.D.
I am an orthodontist in Chico with 27 years in private practice. It has been my privilege to work with most of the dentists, and many physicians, in the north state over that time. I have also served 7 years on the Butte County Cleft Palate Panel, giving me an opportunity to work with a variety of health professionals. Medicine and dentistry progresses through both scientific evidence, and by learning from the successes and mistakes of the past. The use, and arguably overuse, of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in the mid-twentieth century is well documented; reaching its peak in the 1950s. Concerns were often for recurrent throat and ear infections. Today, Otolaryngologists (ENTs), that I have the opportunity to consult, are thoughtful about recommending these surgeries. The medical evidence regarding treatment outcomes and advent of improved medications to address infection, congestion, and allergy are among the changes allowing a cautious approach. My particular area of interest concerns not so much infectious disease, but rather the effect of chronic nasal obstruction on the development of the face, jaws and dentition. Children who are unable to breathe through the nose due to partial or total obstruction may develop several growth disturbances. These characteristics were long ago termed “Adenoid Facies” (Photo #1) and include: long, narrow facial form, narrow nose, upwardly bowed upper lip, mouth-open posture, sleepy expression, high-narrow palate with dental crowding, and reduced forward growth of the lower jaw causing the upper front teeth to protrude. There is some disagreement about whether nasal obstruction is a cause or an effect of those features, but one thing is clear: correction of the blockage and re-establishment of nasal breathing improves the direction of development of jaws and face. It is rare to see all of these features in one child, but presence of more than one raises the likelihood that mouth breathing is affecting development. Many of these changes can be explained by commonsense appreciation of the mechanisms of growth of the face and dentition. Bones and teeth grow and develop through a combination of genetics and the influence of the soft tissues in which they grow. The relationship is clear (although oversimplified) if we use the shape of the upper dental arch and palate as an example. The upper dental arch is squeezed between the tongue pushing outward and cheeks balancing that force by pushing inward.
The result is usually the “U” shape of a normal dental arch. If the mouth is open and the tongue carried low to allow mouth breathing, the cheeks push in and are not balanced by the tongue in the upper part of the mouth. This “squishes” the upper dental arch and encourages development of a narrow “V” shape rather than the normal “U” shape. In what other mischief is mouth breathing implicated? In children and adolescents it is related to learning difficulties, behavioral symptoms similar to ADD/ADHD, sleep apnea, and reduced physical stamina. Breathing only through the mouth, rather than both mouth and nose during athletics, reduces oxygen uptake by the lungs. So, how can the orthodontist and/or the physician address this problem? Similar to adeno/tonsillectomy, early orthodontic treatment (during a period with some permanent teeth and some baby teeth) has had periods of relative favor and disfavor in the orthodontic community. The reasons for a trend away from early treatment included both research evidence on treatment outcomes, and the advent of improved treatment modes. Most orthodontists have found that modern techniques and innovations allow us to treat severe dental crowding and moderate jaw disproportions after waiting for all of the permanent teeth to emerge. This is efficient and convenient for busy teens, parents and the orthodontist. But, jaw, dental, and facial development is often nearly complete by that time. The behavioral and physical development problems mentioned above may have a truly negative effect if a youngster has been mouth breathing much of that time. This is resulting in a swing back toward acceptance of the value of early treatment. A 2002, systematic review in the prestigious ENT journal, Laryngoscope, concluded that “abnormal dentofacial growth” is an indication to consider adenoidectomy. ENT physicians will
often seek to correct nasal obstruction medically first; and that is as it should be. But, in those instances when medical management is less than fully effective, or in instances of too-frequent recurrence, the ENT specialist may recommend surgery and I encourage parents to heed that recommendation. Research at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, in the 1970s, demonstrated remarkable changes in facial growth in mouth breathing children treated with adenoidectomy to re-establish nasal breathing. (Photo #4) It is important to understand that the roof of the mouth (palate) is also the floor of the nose. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic screening for children by age 7. There are instances when conservative medical management can address the entire problem. At other times, surgical treatment by ENT physicians, early orthodontic care, or both, might be required,
Bottom line: There is no single silver bullet solution. Each mouth breathing child deserves a careful evaluation and care tailored to their special needs. At times, it requires teamwork between dentists, orthodontists, and physicians. Idea Fab Labs will offer the Youth + IFL after-school program on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Students will be encouraged to develop, define, and integrate a hands-on approach that incorporates real-world problem solving, project management skills, and object-based learning. The first hour will be assigned to homework help and/or tutoring, and a healthy snack which will be provided to each student. Selected staff will be available during the first hour to bridge academic achievement and encourage peer and community mentorship. The remaining two hours of the program will be set-aside for learning and exploring the subject matter and then diving deep into each week’s focus. At the end of each session, each student will walk away with a completed project. Specialists and guest speakers within each area of expertise will give talks and facilitate workshops throughout each of the 4-week cycle courses. Meals, tutoring, special guests, supplies, and all materials for each project will be provided for, and are included in the cost. All staff involved in the Youth + IFL after-school program have passed background checks and completed a CPR and First Aid training. We are looking for our first 15 students to join now. hen Emily Hajec first moved to Chico six years ago, she found herself inspired by the landscape of Northern California.

Bidwell Park in the fall, Butte Creek Canyon at sunset, the orchards in spring: It was all so beautiful and unique. It really inspired me to just pick up a camera and start documenting it all,” says Emily, who is originally from Reno, Nevada.

There is a strong sense of small business support here in Chico. You walk down Main Street or drive down the Esplanade, and it is just incredible to see so many little boutiques and locally owned specialty stores thriving,” she says of the dozens of
Downtown Chico shops and restaurants.

n a world where consumers are being driven towards online shopping and big name brands, Emily knew there was something really special and different about Chico’s business district and the community supporting these local business owners. She soon found herself wanting to be a part of it and dreaming big dreams that, after five years of growth, would finally come to fruition.
W
ith a love for photography and a passion for small business, Emily began envisioning plans for a studio; a home for her business-Little Wishes Photographywhich specializes in natural light newborn, baby/child, and maternity portraiture in addition to her outdoor family sessions. She wanted something more than just an average photography studio;
she wanted something different--something she could share with other women and organizations as well. “I knew that I wanted to open up the space to other women in business and groups empowering women.” So, when she met Monica Brown in the spring of 2017, it was a perfect match.
M
onica-who is also a full time kindergarten teacher and children’s book author-is the Northern California Trunk Keeper for Matilda Jane Clothing, a unique and beautiful line of one-of-a-kind wear for little girls and women. The Matilda Jane brand is unique in that its pieces are seasonal and limited in their styles and designs. The clothing line is sold exclusively through official Trunk Keepers like Monica. “A Trunk Keeper is exactly as it sounds,” Monica explains. “I am the ‘keeper’ of the clothes. The Matilda Jane clothing, which is on display at the studio, are
samples of the current line. Customers may schedule a private ordering appointment to try on the clothes, or book a personal show to host at the studio and invite their friends and family to attend.”

his past September, the two “mompreneurs” opened their 600 square ft studio, together at 1372 East 1st Avenue, and hit the ground running. “What sets our studio apart is that we each have a unique, specialty niche that we are passionate about, but we are able to time share the space. And-while running our own unique businesses-we are also able to promote and support one another during our separate business hours,” says Emily.

n 2018, the pair will continue to open up their studio and host monthly meetings and small events for other community organizations and businesses, including:
La Leche League, Tuesdays Together; event coordinators such as North State Events; and independent consultants such as LuLaRoe and Stella & Dot.

nd in addition to their regular services, Monica and Emily will also offer special events at the studio to bring parents and other business owners together. Emily will continue to host business seminars and photography lessons at the studio, in addition to scheduling her usual photography sessions for newborn and babies. With the Matilda Jane line, too, Monica has planned once-a-month Matilda Jane “Mommy & Me” events for the upcoming year. These are special mother and daughter themed crafting events for girls of all ages to promote bonding and cater to the whole child. “I want to show young girls that we can have big dreams and influence our community,” Monica explains. “I want
this endeavor to be more than just clothes; the relationships that this business has brought, and will continue to bring, has meant so much to me.”

Thanks for having me Meg! This journey was a long one. I actually wrote the first draft of The Midnight Dance over five years ago. Set in 1800s Italy at the Grande Teatro Finishing School, the novel follows Penny and 11 other young women as they train under the mysterious, young Master to become the finest ballerinas in Italy. It’s the only life Penny has ever known until startling new memories show a very different past. Now, Penny must find a way to uncover the secrets of the school and escape, before it’s too late. The Midnight Dance truly is a labor of love. It was the first time I really delved into revising and editing any of my six manuscripts. I rewrote it (twice) nearly from scratch to get an agent, and then again once we parted ways and Swoon Reads purchased the manuscript. I learned so very much from this process, more from ever writing the first draft of a novel.

What makes you want to write books? There are several things. I love telling stories, and honestly there is something amazing about knowing I’m going to leave this bit of a legacy behind when I’m long gone. I like to make people think, and I like touching the lives of teens, an age when sometimes you need an escape from the real-world drama. How did you realize you were a writer? I have written since I was four years old, typing out horrible rhyming poems on my grandfather’s typewriter. Even though it was a strange path to get here, I have always been a writer! It’s far easier for me to express myself in the written word than through speaking.

While I’ve seen you online and presenting at conferences, it is so great to talk to you in person today, Nikki. I wanted to welcome you to Growing Up Chico Magazine! Congratulations, by the way, on your first book! I know it is a Young Adult novel and has been out a couple of months. Can you share the journey of that book? How long did it take to write it and what is it about?
In the first of our series of interviews with Moms Who Do It All, we are lucky to get a chance to interview the amazing, Nikki Katz, a writer, blogger, and mom from sunny San Diego! Nikki Katz is a managing editor and ex-rocket scientist living in San Diego with her husband and three children. With a BS degree in aerospace engineering, Nikki first put her writing skills to use publishing four nonfiction books in the puzzle and game genre. She moved on to writing young adult fiction, her favorite activity. Other favorite pastimes include: chauffeuring her kids around town, reading fantasy and sci-fi, baking yummy desserts, watching Reality TV, and scrolling social media feeds. The Midnight Dance is her debut novel.
Tell us a little about your mom style and your kids. I am hard on my kids. I am definitely not an “everyone gets a trophy” type of parent. I want them to work hard and see their successes. I rarely coddle, although I am fiercely protective of them when I need to be. I am very competitive and my kids are as well, for better or worse! They are also really good kids. They are respectful to adults and manners are very important to me. I encourage them to explore various activities and they have all landed where they should. My oldest does professional acting, my middle does competitive cheerleading, and my youngest does competitive soccer and recreational lacrosse. Being a mom is a full time job! How to you juggle mom life with writing life? Not well sometimes! I try to write when the kids are at school, but once you’re picked up by a publisher, you are at the whim of that schedule. I have had to work on revisions during both summer break and holiday break! I feel the guilt
on all accounts, but what I’ve learned to do is make my time count. It is quality over quantity and whether I am working or engaged with the kids, I make that my focus. What is your advice to moms who want to try to write a children’s book? Don’t give up. It’s a tough business. Like I said, this was definitely not the first manuscript I wrote! It is a long journey, but you have to keep at it. Write every day if you can. The longer you are away from a project, the harder it is to get back into it! Also, reach out to others and find a critique partner or group. They are invaluable in terms of feedback, but also support as you get out there and (most likely) start receiving rejection for your work. Any exciting projects that you are working on now? I am working on The King’s Questioner, a book about a mental lockpick, Kalen who has the ability to break into people’s minds and steal their deepest secrets. When he uncovers something the king has been hiding in the mind of his childhood friend, former enemies must team up to avert a war. What is the contact information for buying your books? had over 250 participants who were “Dressed to Impress” in their favorite fairy tale or children character costumes. Heater, the Chico Heat Baseball mascot, started off the race with an airhorn blast. Participants were also greeted by other fun walking characters: Mickey & Minnie, Troll Princess, and Batman Minion. Attendees could get their faces painted by a pretty fairy and get their photo taken at an outdoor photo booth; all while rockin’ to the tunes provided by DJ Ryan. Winners of the race received unique commemorative medals, made especially by the Awards Company. The medals were presented by Chico Mayor, Sean Morgan, and Vice Mayor, Reanette Fillmer. Attendees saw a demonstration put on by Azad’s Martial Arts, and could stroll the numerous local business booths, while enjoying free beverages provided by Chico Natural CoOp and Chico Chai. The event raised $3,000 in donations for the Caper Acres Renovation Project.

Caper Acres Playground in Bidwell Park has been a Chico favorite since 1967 when it first opened for play time. Caper Acres is a magical surrounding for a child’s imagination to soar. When you enter Caper Acres, be a child or grown-up, you are immediately immersed into a storybook fantasyland. Caper Acres has a sense of history, nostalgia, and emotion. This beloved playground represents, for many people, a sense of continuity, connection, and community. Unfortunately, Caper Acres was designed for a different era and a smaller population; after years of unforgiving climate and energetic use, this 50-year-old iconic playground is now in desperate need of a renovation. The Caper Acres Renovation Project was created in 2010, recommended by the City of Chico’s Park Division. It was clear that to preserve this special landmark, it needed to be renovated and long - term improvement plans needed to be made. The playground, its infrastructure, and the safety of the equipment, needed to be updated. These efforts would make the playground safer, more enjoyable, and renew the magic and wonder of this marvelous place for generations to come. Since 2010, the Caper Acres Renovation Project has partnered with community service organizations like: the Sunrise & Noon Rotary, the North Valley Community Foundation, and several Departments at Chico State University. Additionally, over the years, the Parks Division has hosted several fundraisers for the Project. Including: the Bidwell Birthday Bash, a Winter Gala, Caper Acres Nite at the Chico Heat Ballpark, and the most popular, the Caper Acres FANTASY FUN RUN 5K Walk/Run. The 2nd Annual Fantasy Fun Run that was held this last May,
The Master Plan for the Renovation Project was created in 2014; its core design is a renovation with 4 Phases. In Spring 2017, Phase 1 of the Caper Acres Renovation Project began and visitors to Caper Acres have seen sections fenced off while those areas are prepared for all the fun and new things to arrive. Phase 1 will include: the front entrance bridge, planting of native plants and trees, extending the walking path from the parking lot, a new Interactive Nature Path next to Birthday Ring 1, and the complete renovation of the swings area. In the winter of 2016, Caper Acres lost the much-loved Crooked House during
record breaking storms. It was destroyed completely by a fallen tree; this prompted fundraising efforts to make it a part of the Phase 1 renovation process. The Caper Acres Renovation Project has partnered with several organizations from the Chico community to kick start Phase 1. Slater & Sons have provided all the labor and materials for the new entrance bridge, partnering with the Sunrise Rotary for the path extension and planting. The Chico Noon Rotary donated all labor and materials to create the Interactive Nature Path. In addition, Chico State’s College of ECC (Engineering/Computer Science/Construction Mgmt), along with the Student Chapter of Associated General Contractors (AGC) from the Construction Management Department, have pulled together an interdisciplinary team. The Student Chapter also created partnerships with several local construction businesses for the installation of the Swings area project. The CSUC student project broke ground in September 2017, with the play equipment installed in October, 2017. The student teams poured wall footings in November, 2017. The project scope includes: grading, installation of French drains, new child and infant swing sets, two spring riders, a 4 - person teeter-tooter, and seated and standing spinners. The new swings area will be partially surrounded by concrete seat walls and will be infilled with engineered fall protection fiber. The students will resume the project at the beginning of the Spring semester in February, 2018.
