Winter is such a fun time of year. For this issue, we have gathered many articles from local writers who want to share things that are important to them during the winter months. This issue has content that reminds me of the things I love about winter: The special events that happen in the community, family, and the reminder that giving is such a powerful thing. Growing Up Roseville provides a way to share the ideas of our wonderful community and we always hope readers can learn something new, and hear different opinions from members of the community, that make them think, wonder, and respond. I want to encourage people to share their stories, informational articles, advice, and knowledge with Growing Up Roseville. If you have ideas, opinions, or articles about any aspect of growing up in Southern Placer County, the community, social responsibility, or growing up greener, please send them in and they may get published! During the week of November 20th-24th, we will have our annual Grateful Giveaways promotion and will be giving away tickets each day to Elf Jr. at Roseville Theatre Arts Academy on our Facebook page. All you have to do is like us on Facebook and respond to our daily post to be entered in to win! I am so grateful to the magazine staff, our advertisers, and the community for the overwhelming support. We absolutely could not produce this magazine without this continued support. “When I was going through so many placements, failing in school and left in the children’s shelter for 5 months, I never thought I was going to leave. The only person who visited me was my CASA. She made me feel better every time I would see her. Having a CASA means someone will always have your back, they will not judge you. They just show up. CASA gave me hope. My CASA helped build a team at school to improve my grades and my behavior. She taught me that “I” was the most important person on my team. Thanks to the CASA program, I am ready to succeed in school and life.” ~ Madison Staples – Foster Youth in our CASA Program.

N

ow a junior in high school, Madison bravely and generously shared her story with a group of CASA supporters as our special guest speaker at the 2017 CAPC Golf Classic. “My mom died when I was 7-years-old and I went to live with my grandma, who struggles with alcoholism. After living with her for 5 years, Child Protective Services removed me from my grandma’s care. I was placed in foster care at the age of 12 and the judge appointed me a CASA. Cathy has done so much for me – being the most consistent and reliable adult in my life while I’ve been placed in so many difference placements – more than I can count, but well over 15. During a 5 month stay at the Children’s shelter, the only person who visited me was Cathy. She gives me HOPE. To me, a CASA means “someone who will have your back.” Being moved around from home to home and in so many different schools, I had a tough time focusing. They put me on a special needs bus. I couldn’t think straight. Cathy made “TEAM MADISON” happen and my life started to change. In 8th grade, when I had no hope at all for my future, Cathy made sure I had an IEP (Independent Education Plan) in place. I now have a 2.9 GPA and a newfound hope to succeed in school. I have goals of my own now – to become a veterinarian and a CASA. It feels SO good knowing someone out there has my back (Cathy) and doesn’t judge me.” ~ Madison. According to Madison’s teachers, she is a “self-advocate” and a “leader with her peers.” Since she has had a CASA, EVERY teacher of hers says she is a “leader,” according to Cathy. “Life is not fair to these kids. They did not pick their circumstances but are victims of a lot of trauma. When they get a CASA, they are finally heard and noticed. Walking side by side, week by week seeing the potential and the growth of these kids is important work for me

personally. CASA has provided me the training and resources to help Madison find her own voice, filled with confidence. Her teachers at school call her “a leader”. Being a part of this transition, has been a blessing. Madison now has her OWN voice.” ~ Cathy Soohoo, CASA Child Advocates of Placer County (CAPC) has three main programs of operation. The first and largest program, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), matches an abused, abandoned, and/or neglected child with an adult volunteer who can speak on behalf of the child when his or her needs aren’t met. These children are often removed from their homes for safety reasons, but the goal is to eventually reunite the child with his or her parents when court orders have been met. The Youth Mentor Program places an adult mentor with a middle school aged child or former foster youth in need of guidance. They meet once a week for about six months. CAPC’s Family Mentor Program helps parents build life skills to prepare them to reunite with their child. When a child is placed back with his or her parents after being in the foster care system, within three years that child will likely go back to foster care. CAPC’s program teaches parents how to cook, budget and care for their children in hopes to keep that family together and avoid that likelihood. This program serves about 25 parents per year. There are many people who believe these parents don’t deserve a second chance, but studies prove that it’s in the kids’ best interest to be back with their parents, so long as they are safe and their needs are being met, of course. CAPC has over 200 volunteers working in these programs. Each volunteer receives 35 hours of training, which includes observing court cases, taking an oath before a judge and learning to navigate heavy topics. Children that come into the system face problems like parental substance abuse, domestic violence, sexual abuse, homelessness, sex trafficking, neglect and poverty. Having volunteers working with children is crucial, because it shows children that someone cares about them even though that person is not being paid. Many of these children have seen some pretty horrible things and have experienced trauma – it plants a seed of hope that not every adult has made these mistakes or does these terrible things. For more information on volunteer opportunities with Child Advocates of Placer County, visit www.casaplacer.org.

Measure D projects are reshaping the Roseville Joint Union High School District!

Last November, voters overwhelmingly approved a $95 million dollar bond. In the past year, those funds have been used to replace roofs, add classrooms, replace carpet and upgrade our existing facilities. The big projects will be taking shape this spring. Groundbreaking for the districts 6th high school in West Roseville will take place in April! Approved plans are expected back from the State next month. This will be a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility that will eventually serve almost 2400 students as the city continues to grow. The school name, mascot and colors will be determined by the school board this winter.

The new performing arts building for Antelope High School should be under construction by this summer as well. The entire community is excited to finally have a venue to serve the amazing performing arts programs at the school. Planning has begun to replace the 95 year old small gym and girl’s locker room at Roseville High. The new facility will include a PE classroom and wrestling room. Oakmont High School is working on the design for a new Dance room and a total remodeling of their career technical education facility to house Engineering and other high tech programs. Design work has begun at Granite Bay High School for enlargement of their pool (to meet competition standards) and to construct our first solar energy project in their parking lot. Replacement of the entire roofing system at Woodcreek High School will be completed by the end of next summer. All of the high schools are utilizing these funds for other needed repairs that have been put off since the recession.

Anxiety in Kids:

How To Neutralize It And Protect Them For Life Heidi Newman, Director of RENU Holistic Health

A

nxiety is a normal response to something dangerous or stressful. It becomes a problem when it shows up unexpectedly and takes a particularly firm hold. When anxiety is in full swing, it feels awful and prevents us from achieving our goals. We already know that anxiety has nothing to do with strength, courage or character. It picks a target and it switches on. When that target is a child or teen, it can be particularly distressing, causing problems with sleeping, eating and missed school from unexplained illnesses such as sick tummies or headaches. One of the worst things about anxiety is the way it can happen without any identifiable cause. The physical feeling is familiar – that panicked feeling that comes when you miss a stair or that feeling you get when you wish you could fall asleep at night but instead you keep replaying a particular uncomfortable scene in your mind. Anxiety in children can make it more difficult to stay on task or become proficient at any subject, such as reading out loud. They are capable of reading, but distracted by thoughts of self-doubt, self-consciousness or comparing themselves to their fellow classmates. This can lead to their falling behind in class or prevent them from reaching their goal. The good news is that anxiety in kids is very treatable and they are particularly responsive. I often think we don’t give them enough credit. They’re so open to possibility, and very quick to make the right connections when given guidance and support.

growingup upchico roseville magazine 1616 growing magazine

As a parent, the temptation is to reassure your child with gentle comments in the way of, “There’s nothing to worry about” or “You’ll be fine.” This comes from the purest of intentions but it runs the risk of them feeling as though there’s something wrong with them. The truth is, when anxiety has a hold of them, they can no sooner stop worrying than fly to the moon. As much as they want to believe you, their brains just won’t let them. What they need to hear is that you get it. Ask them what it feels like for them. They may or may not be able to articulate – and that’s okay. Then, ask if it’s like that feeling you get when you miss a stair, or when you feel like you’re falling in your sleep. Often, this is such a relief because someone gets it. Anxiety is normal and everyone experiences it at some time in their life – before an exam, when meeting new people, going for an interview, or starting a new school. Sometimes it happens for seemingly no reason at all. In truth, it occurs because there’s a part of your brain that thinks there’s something it needs to protect you from. That part of the brain is called the amygdala; an almond-shaped mass of gray matter whose primary role is to process memory, decisionmaking, and emotional reactions. So when the amygdala senses a threat, it floods your body with oxygen, adrenaline and hormones your body can use to fuel its fight or flight response. When this happens, your breathing quickens, your heart starts racing and you might feel sick.

It happens to many adults and kids, but there are strategies you can employ in order to kick anxiety to the curb. About 1 in 8 kids have struggled with anxiety – so let them know that in their class, there’s a good chance 3 or 4 other kids would know exactly what they’re going through because they’ve been through it before. Maybe they’re going through it right now. As a stay-at-home mom for many years, I have helped my own children and friends restore peace from anxiety and have recently opened RENU Holistic Health in Newcastle, California, to share what I’ve learned with others; how to reprogram your stress pattern by holding pressure points. You can even use this technique to defuse a traumatic memory. Using pressure points, sound therapy, and exercises naturally helps your mind and body heal. It reboots your system, recharges your energy, helps you stay focused and sleep better at night. RENU can help you on your journey to release negative emotion, feel more relieved and relaxed, and restore your body to optimal health. It’s that time of year, so make sure your kids have plenty of rest, eat a healthy balanced diet, use good hygiene and reduce their stress so their energy is used to fight viruses instead of anxiety. were open to this behavior, apparently she recognized it again at school. So, completely on her own, she decided that she will still play with these girls at recess from time to time, but is now focusing on friendships and playdates with some other girls. I never told her that she had to drop a friendship. I believe in being nice to everyone, but I advised her to look for good friends. And now she chooses to spend her playtime with a couple other girls that share her same principals. Let’s get back to my point about being friendly with everyone. Mady is lucky that she has so many friends. So for her to alter who she may spend a little extra time with was not a big deal, or even probably obvious to others. By remaining friendly with everyone, it also saves some hurt feelings and recess time can continue on in a fun way for all her classmates. So again, I put a lot of emphasis on being nice to everybody!

The Friendship Challenge

age, they can save themselves some trouble when they hit the teenage years (hopefully…finger crossed).

Growing up, there was a lot that my parents did that I hope to improve upon, or even do differently, but the one thing that I appreciate was them putting a lot of emphases on people skills. They taught my sisters and me how to get along with anyone, even if they were very different from us. As I have gotten older, their tips and advice have come in handy on numerous occasions. Now, I want to do my best to teach my kids about what it means to be a good friend, look for good friends, and how to overall get along with anyone and everyone.

Recently, my daughter was with a big group of friends. Overall, they were all lovely little girls, and each one had a lot of fun. I did, however, see some attitudes and character displays that were not appealing. To say it directly – had my daughter been the one to say those mean things to someone else, or to act in a disrespectful way, or permanently leave a mark on someone else’s wall, she would be in big, big trouble! Thankfully, none of this came from her, or was directed at her, but we both witnessed this behavior and it offered the perfect opportunity to discuss picking friends.

I spend a lot of time teaching my kids how to be nice to others: to be respectful, selfless, and look for those that need a friend or a helping hand. I want them to be kind to everyone; however, who they pick for their closest friends, needs to be done carefully. I truly believe that you are guilty by association, and that you become like those with whom you surround yourself. So, if I believe this, then that means I want to surround myself with people that represent what I want to be, or how I want to live my life. Hopefully, by teaching my children this at a young

My daughter and I talked about how even though these two other girls were fun to play with, they did not always make the best choices. She understood that even though the hurtful words did not come from her own lips, those words left another friend hurt in her presence. Overall, I tried to keep our talk and the lesson to the point. I made it quickly, and changed over to more lighthearted topics. A few weeks later, an interesting thing happened. Now that Mady’s eyes

Recently, I came across a fun activity on Pinterest. It was a way to challenge your little ones to be nice and friendly to others. My hope from doing this experiment was that it will help my kids to make someone else smile, strengthen the relationships they already have, and maybe even encourage them to make a new friend. I called this, “The Friendship Challenge.” 1. First, my kids got an old baby wipes container and decorated it.

2. Next, we talked about ways to be a good friend, or ways to make other people smile. These were a few things they came up with: • Hold the door for someone • Let someone else pick first • Give a friend a hug • Make a card for someone that is sick or hurt • Give someone that is not a close friend a compliment • Share • Sit with someone new at lunch or circle time • Play with someone lonely at recess • Smile at everyone • Help a friend in need

Children's Photography Contest Winners Growing Up Roseville Magazine had a children’s photo contest and we asked for photos that kids had taken of animals or in nature. We received many beautiful photos. Congratulations to our 2 winners whose photos are featured on this page and thank you to all who sent in photos! Keep looking in future issues or on our Facebook page for more fun contests.

3. We wrote down all of the ideas on slips of paper (or you could do Popsicle sticks). For the next week, each morning, my kids pulled a paper and got their “Friendship Challenge” for the day. It has been fun to have the kids report back or even come up with new ideas to add to our container. We would love to hear from you and hear how you teach your kids to be a good friend!

winter fun

T

By Shari Medini

hroughout the winter months, we often spend a lot of time in the car traveling to various holiday festivities. This, of course, is on top of our usual time spent driving to and from activities in the minivan. Sometimes I use our portable DVD players as a crutch for longer car rides, but it is obviously not the best thing for my boys. Plus, listening to endless episodes of Team Umizoomi and Mega Man gets a little old after a while. The other option is listening to kid music, which can be fine in small doses, but is not the most enjoyable thing either. Luckily, kid-friendly podcasts have been gaining popularity! Some of these focus on story-telling, while others tackle science topics. I can tell you that I enjoy listening to these podcasts just as much as my children do! 1. Wow in the World - “On May 15, NPR launched its first podcast for kids and families, Wow in the World, hosted by Guy Raz and Mindy Thomas. This weekly show invites curious kids, and their grown-ups, on a journey away from their screens, inside their brains and into the most amazing stories in science, technology, and new discoveries.” 2. Brains On! - “Brains On!® is a science podcast for curious kids and adults from American Public Media. Cohosted each week by kid scientists and reporters from public radio, they answer questions ranging from the science behind sneezing, to how to translate the purr of cats, and go wherever the answers take us.” 3. Storynory - Stories for Kids “Storynory brings you an audio story every week. Each one is beautifully read by Natasha and friends. Let Natasha’s voice beguile you with classic fairy tales, new children’s stories, poems, myths, adventures, and romance.” 4. But Why - “But Why is a show led by kids. The kids ask the questions and But Why finds the answers. It’s a big interesting world out there. On But Why, they tackle topics large and small, about nature, words, even the end of the world.” 5. Story Time - “Do your children like

listening to bedtime stories? Story Time has lots of great stories for everyone to listen to. Each story is usually less than 20 minutes long, hopefully just long enough to keep your toddler, preschoolers, and little ones engaged. Story Time is a free fortnightly audiobook podcast for children ages 2-12.” 6. Bernasconi recognized that Rosevillians love Roseville and there’s some serious creativity that goes into creating that sense of pride. From the community’s immense parks and endless trails, to an up-and-coming downtown, a popular megamall and access to San Francisco and Tahoe, Intent Apparel is positioned to enjoy all that northern California offers. “Our intent is to make people happy. Sounds a bit dreamy, right?” asks Wyles. “We think we can do this by offering something you can’t get just anywhere. Our tees, totes and tanks are high quality and printed by hand locally. Plus, all of our items are limited edition. When they’re gone, they’re gone.” Intent Apparel found their name through their philanthropic inspirations. Bernasconi and Wyles take care to perform all of their actions and decisions with an intent behind them, a bigger reason, a thought process.

Shop Local This Holiday Season! What began as a friendship between two women working together and raising families in Roseville, California has grown into a fun start-up with the intent of sharing their love of Roseville by designing hip, fresh and comfy attire and accessories that any Rosevillian would be proud to sport! Intent Apparel was founded by friends Krista Bernasconi and Allyson Wyles. A year in the half in the making, with an entrepreneurial mindset, they created a women owned, veteran owned and breast cancer survivor owned business, which is why a portion of proceeds benefit the Placer Breast Cancer Foundation. “I am proud of my hometown and I’ve always been on the lookout for cool Roseville gear I could wear out and about, but could never find any that I felt represented Roseville well enough,” said Bernasconi. “I figured, why not design it myself?!”

“This is why we chose to begin Intent Apparel with the intent to donate a portion of our proceeds to the Placer Breast Cancer Foundation,” says Bernasconi. “We wanted there to be a greater intent behind our decision to develop a new business. Plus, it’s a cause that really hits home for us.” You can find Intent Apparel at their office at 224 Vernon Street in Downtown Roseville, which is also in the same location of their public relations firm. They’ve expanded their line to include sweatshirts, beanies, trucker hats, stickers and more—all branded Roseville.
