Three world ranked universities, campuses of two institutes of technology, and more than ten independent tertiary providers reside within three kilometers of each other in Wellington City. From: Indonesia / Japan. Study: Diploma of Graphic Design and Digital Media. Work: Graphic Designer – Luvly. Practical learning

Top five things to do:

The Digital Media course I studied was developed in close association with New Zealand’s animation industry. Wellington has a close network of design and animation professionals who are easy to approach and are very generous sharing their experiences.

1. Hot coffee on a winter’s day 2. Walk around the waterfront 3. Take a train to Waikanae 4. Take the ferry to Eastbourne 5. The Botanical Gardens in spring

Compact city You can get to any part of the city by walking or by a short bus ride. The city has great public facilities and is surrounded by beautiful natural environment which is peaceful and a beautiful place to be creative.

Weekends I usually go for a walk around the city with a sketchbook and look for new restaurants or cafés. I always go to the Sunday farmers’ market on the waterfront to stock up on my fruit and vegetables for the week. Just about everyone else in Wellington is there as well! If I feel like Japanese food, I would recommend Kazu Yakitori and Sake Bar and Tatsushi for a taste of home!

From: Vietnam. Study: Information Systems. Work: Enspiral, Social Entrepreneurship Foundation. Why Wellington I came here originally to study at university, but didn’t have a plan to stay. As my studies progressed, I fell in love with the city. It’s a relaxed and vibrant city, and the people here are very friendly. Education In New Zealand, education is very dynamic with ideas shared and debated in lectures, tutorials, and in study groups. Students are expected to participate and contribute their arguments rather than just reproduce those of the lecturer. Why Wellington: 1. Great people 2. Fantastic city to work in if your work is in the ICT industry 3. Restaurants from almost every country in the world and all close together in the city

4. Outdoors! I’m a mountain biker and there is an amazing network of trails around the city 5. The relaxed atmosphere of the city Biggest difference between Wellington and Vietnam The houses! The most popular construction in Wellington are wooden buildings and they are relatively old (some houses were built in the 19th century). Houses in Vietnam are relatively new and are built from brick and mortar.

What is your favorite Wellington secret? For fellow non-drivers, take the No. 14 bus from Kilbirnie to the City and enjoy the magnificent view of the harbor when it drives down Mt. Victoria and makes a sharp turn into Oriental Bay. Who thought taking a bus could be such a pleasure!
