Innovation Ecosystem Innovation has never been more important and it is often harder than it seems. We are in conversation with Jennifer Wilde, director head of Innovative Ecosystem. Let’s find our more! 1. When did you first set out to make an impact on innovation? For both of us, this has been a journey rooted in necessity. We have each been drawn to complex, messy challenges that push the boundaries of innovation. Dan’s first job was in an industry undergoing massive restructuring because of deregulation. At the same time, Jenny has spent years on the ground in crisis-torn areas, leading efforts to respond to humanitarian needs. These complex challenges can’t be addressed with incremental improvements or a new mobile app in both cases. We began as practitioners, trying to push the bounds of what innovation could do because we wanted to work on challenges that could make a difference in the success of a business or the quality of people’s lives. For Dan, that’s been a 40-year journey that has led from one messy challenge to another. For Jenny, it led to setting

up an international network of humanitarian innovation labs. In both cases, doing more with innovation was necessary if we wanted to take on these urgent real-life challenges. 2. What is System Innovation? There are several distinct types of innovation. However, most people and leaders are familiar with creation. Practices such as lean improvement programs or agile product development target smaller focused ideas. In contrast, system innovation takes on more significant, more complex challenges. A system innovator sees the world as a collection of Lego blocks that they can put together in ‘systems’ that make the world around them work in new ways. What gives a system innovator creative power is that their ‘Lego’ blocks can be organizations, individuals, resources, or technology. They take all the wealth of capabilities and combine them to create incredible value for all the participants. This assembling of high impact innovation enables significant, impactful change. For example, when Uber redefined the taxi business, they acted as system innovators that defined a new system for delivering rides. Likewise, when there was a 16,000% increase in telehealth services at the beginning of the pandemic, system innovators in medicine replaced traditional inperson health care with a new system that connected professionals, patients, and technology. 4. Why is it so crucial to the world right now? System innovators are exceptionally well-positioned to deal with significant complex challenges that are 30 JUNE 2022
both exciting and threatening in the coming decade of the Roaring 2020s. This is because system innovators intentionally change the way the world works. That might be at a small scale within a community, a broader scale within a business, or a truly global scale on challenges like climate change. We live in a world where accelerating rates of change are increasingly making the status quo obsolete. Trying to cling to past ways of working is a recipe for disaster. A business that becomes obsolete because of disruption in its industry is not simply going to be less profitable, and it will be entirely swept away. This is also important at a societal level. Poorly functioning systems that drive climate change, pandemic response, and social turmoil can overturn everything in our lives. As individuals, business leaders, and societies, we need significant innovations to make an impact. If we can do bigger things with innovation, it will make threats more tractable and open the doors to doing bold things to improve our lives every day. 5. What can it be used to do? When a business faces disruptive change in its market, system innovation makes it possible to do more than optimize its failing business model. An enterprise can use system innovation to reinvent its place in the market, delivering new forms of value, connecting with new partners, and working in new ways. They become the disruptor instead of the disrupted. Activists working on pressing problems in communities or on a global scale need system innovation to deliver sustainable changes that shift the way things work. We’ve worked with a wide range of organizations seeking to make a more significant impact on issues like education or health, where solutions must engage a host of diverse actors. System innovators are also well positioned to claim a new greenfield space. For example, the brilliance of Steve Jobs and the iPhone was not that he created a better phone but that he created an entirely new system for generating value. It was a ‘system’ that benefited Apple and engaged software developers, content producers, phone users, and many others in new ways. 6. Why is the Innovation Ecosystem different from others?
Over the last 25 years, there has been an overall growth in support of innovation. Still, much of this has been on narrowly focused work in optimizing existing operations (think Toyota’s total quality management) or developing new digital products and services (think IDEO). These are valuable work areas, but they don’t position innovators for doing bigger things with more complex challenges. That’s our area of focus. We help leaders and innovators deal with challenging problems, significant opportunities, disrupted markets, or scaling national or global products. We work with companies, governments and individuals to succeed in taking on more ambitious innovation work. This focus on System Innovation practices is vital because each form of innovation is very different from other methodologies. You can’t successfully respond to a disrupted market or tackle a pandemic response with the same innovation tools and thinking that would be used for improving a business process or developing a new digital app. You might say we specialize in the art of doing more important things. 7. What are some of the benefits System Innovation can provide? Who should benefit from it? Some people hear the word ‘system’ and assume that system innovation is only applicable to substantial global problems and change. While it’s true that system innovation is a powerful way to deal with that kind of problem, system innovation opportunities exist at every level. For example, a family business or social enterprise has systems that shape how successfully it works globally. As a result, they will be able to benefit from thinking about how to shift and reimagine their challenges and opportunities. Individual professionals find that they can explore new systems for how they work. For example, the shift to remote working has allowed us to put together project teams worldwide. That’s a new system for doing work that can impact us. 8. How does your Agile transformation process differ from traditional processes?

Q. What is the greatest thing you have achieved after starting your own company? There were many big things which we had achieved. First of which was when NASSCOM joined our company. Another achievement was when we joined our company with Google and Palo Alto Networks. Our company eventually started getting fame and people started noticing us. Q. What are the hurdles you faced while establishing the company? We started as a 4-person company in a small apartment. With the excitement of new business ideas, we were tempted to launch something new but creating a detailed business plan that can cover marketing, staff, finances, and sales used to give a skeptical feeling with a bunch of doubts. But with consistency and hard work we kept striving and we were satisfied when it started showing results. Q. How your life looked like before the company existed? After completing my graduation in chemical engineering, I was functional as an ERP consultant. After working for 4 years at the same, I left the job and started to think about something of my own. I never knew about the entrepreneur hiding inside me for so long that I finally found, and invented Tudip. Q. How did the COVID affect your company’s work? Unlike the other big industries that got affected due to the pandemic, we stood with all the Tudipians as a family and continued increasing the employee headcounts every year. We have provided an endless solution to the clients over time. Our employees also have shown constant hard work and dedication with an exceptional 24*7 service. We also have started a CSR initiative “We stand by you” in which we provide a year’s salary to the family members of our employees if he/she dies during their work period and also educate their children (if any) till they graduate. We seek inspiration from others by always trying something different. As a child, I doodled designs for an innovative watch. Then, when I was eight years old, my teacher assigned the class to build an “innovative and ground-breaking product in third grade.” Years later, I discovered that my watch design had been developed 20 years earlier by Apple. 2. How did you get involved with this company? In 2016, I founded Ecoplant with my father, Moti Yaacov, who is an expert in compressed air and energy efficiency. Yaron Harel, also a co-founder, leads product development and is responsible for product design. We began by developing a market survey to identify potential customers and targeted factories to help us build our product. In March 2019, we started selling our first units, including the Danone factory in Israel and factories in the United States and China. 3. What do you wish you had known before launching your company? The most important thing for a new business is to assemble a capable team that can carry out the idea. Some people think they need to have the idea first, but finding good team members who can develop and advance any concept matters. The key to a successful company or product is strong leadership. A business needs people who know how to take an idea, develop it, and push it forward. 4. What is the company’s strategy for dealing with the current recession? First of all, it should be understood that one of the key added values of our product is cost savings (energy, operation, maintenance) so that many companies that are sensitive to margins enjoy cost reduction as a result of using Ecoplant’s product. We are in the right place at the right time. Second, the company plans to expand globally and product wise. In the last two years, the company has established operations in the United States and has factories installed in Israel, Europe, and Asia. In addition, the company continues to develop its “big vision,” a dynamic control platform for all 58 JUNE 2022
infrastructure/utilities in the plant. The company also collaborates extensively with Ecolab, an investor and strategic partner. 5. What are your thoughts on achieving success in the business world? I believe that networking with people you can help and who can help you is the key to success. Throughout 2019, I participated in an acceleration program called Techstars Farm to Fork, which is considered one of the most prestigious programs in the world for startups. As part of the program, I was exposed to the term “first give”—the idea that I help you, connect you, and do not expect a return. If you succeed—I succeed, too. What has been a tremendous success since you started your enterprise? We have designed a fantastic team that has taken an idea, worked with the largest companies in the world and turned our vision into a product used to control critical manufacturing processes in the industry. 7. What challenges did you face while establishing the company? When the founders proposed their idea, many people said they wouldn’t be able to pull it off. One thousand reasons exist for a project to fail—one reason for it to succeed. Even when they had no paychecks for the first two years on the job, and things didn’t turn out as they’d hoped, the founders never gave up. 8. Before founding the company, did you have a career goal like this? Before starting Ecoplant, I was a sales executive director at SAP and a radio broadcaster. From every job I worked, I learned something important—for example, being a radio broadcaster taught me how to interview effectively and build a compelling story that would convince both clients and investors. 9. From your perspective, how did the COVID facilitate your company’s work?

Make the world greener, without having to invest and buy expensive equipment. Through proper and smart management of existing resources it is possible to achieve great results. We benefited from the COVID-19 pandemic in that suddenly, factories recognized the importance of connecting and working remotely, implementing intelligent alerts, and reducing the chance of shutting down the production line in a time of uncertainty and low profits. We developed sales and assimilation methods that do not require the physical presence of our team or significantly reduce the need for it. Which significantly shortened our sales processes and simplified the installation and operations of implementing the system. 10. How do you stay more charged or energetic when you feel that things aren’t going as planned? It is essential to consider the big picture when creating a new company that there is a need in the market and that it can provide a unique solution. It is also important to maintain cohesion among the partners who believe in the company’s vision and product, even when challenges occur. 11. How do you remain competitive? Stay connected to the market, your product, and your customers, and keep an eye on your competitors. Actively approach customers, ask them what they need, and look for ways to improve every time a competitor gets a deal. 12. What was your main goal when you started the business? Now is it the same?
I run the company from the business, legal and financial sides. In general, I should make sure that there is money and business in the company—from investors or customers—to keep growing. 15. How do you define success for yourself? We have set a target to reduce one million CO2 metric tons by 2030. Therefore, we will consider our goal to be achieved if we achieve this goal. 16. What makes you the best? Pursuit of excellence and innovation, constantly striving to prove value to the customer, listening to customer needs, and building a suitable solution. 17. Where will your company be in 10 years? Reduce 1 million metric tons of greenhouse-gas emissions and wastes- working with most fortune 500 companies. We will continue to go on and build a team and a winning product that leads us to success. Our project is to grow and conduct our business in the U.S. market. What do we have to say? health healthcare services are coming to light, especially in this pandemic. What problems did you set out to solve in founding NeuroFlow?
Q. How did you come up with the name NeuroFlow? Why did that work?
Those people are already in therapy; they’ve taken that first big step in terms of getting that support. The tragedy is that of the 50 million people a year that have anxiety or depression in this country, twothirds of them will never even get to that point. And so we have this tremendous gap in care. 30 million people that need support—and these are the people that we know about—that need support, that will never actually go and get it. And you can bridge the gap by going to where they’re treated and provide them the support and provide the physicians that they require so that they can be more adequate in treating the whole person. And so in 2018, we made a big pivot. Rather than focusing on the therapists and that ongoing care, it was focusing on the primary care providers and bridging that divide. We do that with over 400,000 people under contract now.
My co-founder, Adam Pardes, and I came up with the name NeuroFlow when our business was just an idea. Our whole mantra has always been around bridging the divide between mental and physical health, making the mental aspect of our health more relatable and something tangible is the goal. The name NeuroFlow embodied the mix of “Neuro” which we think of when we think of the physical aspect of the brain or the physical manifestation of the mind, and “Flow” which is a psychological term and mindset known for peak performance whereas someone can be in a “State of Flow.” We have come so far since that first product and I am so proud of the team we built that helped us pivot so successfully into what we are today, but have always stayed grounded in our original premise that mental health IS health. Q. For those of us who are unfamiliar with the experience of serving in the military. I wanted for you to share anything you would be comfortable with sharing. In the military, as a platoon we had 40 soldiers. We’re at 55 employees now at NeuroFlow, a relatively the same size organization, trying to solve tough problems, with a lot of ambiguity, with not a lot of support and not a lot of resources. So, when I was in the Army, at 22 years old, I graduated and I was put in charge of a platoon. Two weeks after taking command of the platoon, we had orders to deploy over to Iraq. Our mission was to secure the southern hundred miles of the main highway that led from Baghdad to Kuwait, so that resupply trucks and humanitarian missions and those sorts of things were secured and safe. And it was a transcendent 12 months of my life, personally. You grew up very quickly and you solved tough problems as a team. Fortunately, we ended those 12 months with no friendly loss of life, some injuries and that sort of thing. But it was a long 12 months. When we came back home, we were all screened for mental health conditions like PTSD, insomnia, depression. Q. A lot of the inequities in healthcare and mental 70 JUNE 2022
Q. Speaking of stigma, especially in the mental health space, what harm do you think it does when we think about mental health differently from physical health? That’s been the thought pattern for forever, up until recently. That’s why you have carved out mental health benefits. There was a huge study done by Milliman that shows that the cost of care is increased by four to five times when somebody has a comorbid behavioral health condition with a physical health condition. Which is just mind-boggling. I think that is being recognized more and more, so more insurance codes have come out. More primary care physicians now have integrated either NeuroFlow or other services, or they’ve hired licensed clinical social workers to be in their clinic, which I think is a really, really great sign of where we’re headed as a society. Q. Advice you would give your younger self? Don’t worry so much about the don’t. It’s all going to work out, even if not according to the exact plan that you had. If you are focused on doing the right thing and doing good for people, it will work out in the end.

Our few words with the CEO of Zipari, Mark Nathan, we got insight about the company and the beliefs and aims of Mark Nathan from Zipari. Read further to find out. Q. What was the motivation and the inspiration for you to get this company going? Ans. Well, I have always had an entrepreneurial streak from very young and some of the places I worked at, in the beginning of my career, I have always had this entrepreneurial feel to what we were always doing. I always gravitated towards that. I had done a startup at the very beginning, in the early 2000s but that did not really take off, but I learned quite much from that, then I spent about 10 years on the payer side. I took challenges and worked for a small company in Berklin and I had to develop a technology for that. We were getting a lot of work done, but the company I worked for did not want to be in 75 JUNE 2022
that business anymore. And so, we thought about all the technology that was set up and we wanted to make it work. And it was at that time it took about 9 months, which were very challenging but i met with a bunch of investors. Eventually, I met with Dave Schwab from vertical venture partners and we partnered up and founded Zipari in the summer of 2014. I did not really build out a plan to build a startup but we got and took the opportunity and we were able to shape into the founding of Zipari. Q. What technologies did you have available? What were the hardest things in businesses to take a home ground for business purpose, technology and create a generally available software out of it? What did you build there and how did you manage to convert it into a software that anyone could run? I have been a technologist for my whole life, as I first worked at NASA for a number of years, and robotic studies. I have always been on the software and AI side and actually at the company which did not take it off, I actually learned a lot. I created this semantic mapping and technology that computes in real, 11 thousand pieces of information for every senses block which is 2 hundred and 20 thousand senses. So there is a lot of data for a lot of different demographics and we had to find a way to graphically produce and take that data to convert into meaningful information. I started building some technology and then I used it at Guardian health insurance when I was there for ten years. I came up with a unique technique to manage data and services and UI. On the technology side we just had the TPA and so, we ended up building a service layer that will allow us to connect to the TPA for three different health insurance companies at the single code base for their member portal and service center, online shopping, etc. Right from the beginning, we built something that was very scalable and built for multiple payers at once, but that was pre-Zapari, and when we brought that to Zapari we started to think about product marketing and then our very purpose had to scale. Q. When was your first management role? It was in my first job out of college. I was 24 and managing about a dozen people. That’s when I first started developing my style. In the morning, I would go around to people and ask if they needed anything 76 JUNE 2022
to help them do their jobs. And I’d do that again in the afternoon. Q. Tell me about your leadership style now. I don’t really believe in firing people. Although it’s necessary at times, nine times out of 10 it’s usually a hiring problem. Nobody likes to fire people, so I try hard not to have to get to that point. I see it all the time, where somebody is brought into a role because we need to fill it quickly, and we kind of take a pass on checking whether they’ll fit into our culture. But when you fire someone, not only does it hurt the person, but it hurts their family, it hurts the co-workers who liked that person, and it creates fear. So there’s all sorts of damaging ripple effects. I like to say that nobody ever comes up with a brilliant idea while they’re being chased by a lion. You need to create an environment where people can be themselves. So now when we hire, we’re really cautious. We have a hiring manager, and there are also four of us who screen for cultural fit. I look at people’s aspirations, such as where they want to get to, and then I figure out how to get them as close to that as possible. Once I do that, then their productivity goes up dramatically because all of a sudden they’re doing something they like. I’m also very direct about what I expect from people. People know that I’m going to say it how it is, and I’ll tell people how I think they should be doing better . I found that I learned the most from managers who told me the really tough things that I didn’t want to hear. So I tell people I’m mentoring that there’s one rule when we meet: Put on your Teflon. If you really want to grow and you want to learn, put on your Teflon because I’m going to tell you things that nobody else is telling you. Q. What career and life advice do you give to new college grads? I’m a big believer in grabbing new opportunities, especially if it’s a new challenge that will add to your repertoire. You’re going to switch jobs many, many times in your life.

We use various machine learning primitives like Word Embeddings, Neural Networks, Boosted Decision Trees and Long, Short-term Memory (LSTM), to name a few, to solve this problem. Our ability to understand the context of all available data allows us to (a) focus on candidates’ capabilities – not just the keywords listed in their resumes and (b) present the relevancy of those capabilities to available job opportunities. While most solutions in the market use keyword or boolean search, we can predict “what’s next” for a candidate – whether they are outside looking into a company or an employee looking to find the best next job internally. Our deep learning models are purpose-built for people and jobs and allow us to take all the disparate data points available to make an informed and transparent recommendation. The ability to explain “why” builds tremendous trust and confidence in both the candidate and the employer to rely on the TIP platform. Q. What are some of the top driver’s organizations’ factors in investing in work tech? Your company is your people. Having a platform that identifies potential skills or best fits for new roles only adds more value to your organization. If you can ensure you have a worker who continues to grow their skills and career, they are exponentially more valuable than a static employee. Q. What are some of the challenges that will be faced by organizations and employers alike when it comes to adoption, and how can they mitigate those challenges? The biggest challenge will be overcoming existing biases and mindsets. There are so many poor assumptions about remote work environments or how employees can interact with each other. If you have identified and hired the correct people, they will be passionate about their role and naturally build to success together. Q. “Explainability” of AI systems is a hot topic. How can your customers understand the reasons behind your hiring recommendations? Employment is the backbone of society; simultaneously, one of the business’s most complex 78 MAY 2022
problems is matching the right person with the proper role. People pitch recruiting as if it were a transaction. Still, to build a holistic platform, companies need to develop a process that solves this problem and creates work that is most meaningful to the highest number of people. In addition, companies have a say in what they’re looking for. For example, when it comes to diversity, they can input whether they’re searching for men or women or people of a particular ethnic background. Our platform provides visibility into each recommendation, so both the candidate and the employer understand why they are a good fit for a specific role . Eightfold.ai can put exemplary candidates in the space that businesses want to ideally mirror; the system will look at what the applicant has achieved throughout their career and how relevant their experience level is in the current role. This caused me to analyze how I can arrive into my system, examine the list of 150 people, and find the one significant person I need for this role? Then we build models over all of it to figure out who is capable of completing the essential responsibilities for the position. There are two crucial functions at work: developing a business’s talent network and mapping how people have expanded from one career advancement to another. One of the significant pain points today is guidance and direction around the learnability of new skills for the candidates. Technology is changing every day, and people are on the lookout to expand their skill set.
