Wool in the sleeping bag Until now, you only had the choice of a sleeping bag filled with down or with synthetic fibre. Down insulates well and maintains a good climate â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but it has the major disadvantage that it is very sensitive to moisture and no longer insulates in humid conditions. Synthetic fibre, however, reduces moisture but does not maintain such a good climate. And it does not insulate as well as natural down. The new filling Almwolle has the advantages of down and synthetic fibre combined! Almwolle also provides excellent insulation even when moist, and maintains an excellent, dry climate. The more air a material can store, the better it will insulate against cold and heat.

Sleep ResearchThe latest scientific results Consistent with earlier scientific findings, a study undertaken by the University of Sydney, Australia and funded by the Australian Wool Innovation, has found that a better night’s sleep is achieved when sleeping in or under wool. • In the pilot stage of this 3-year study, eight volunteers participated in the study and were tested in varying temperatures using both wool and non-wool sleepwear and bedding products. • Results were derived using polysomnography which is currently the standard technique where subjects have brain wave patterns measured and analysed. • According to this study, wool sleeping apparel and bedding ncreases total sleep time and improves sleep efficiency.

Does wool improve sleep quality? The scientific evidence Previous studies suggest that sleep quality improves when sleeping on or under wool. This appears to be related to wool’s unique temperature and moisture management properties, and texture. You can read about these studies below. • The use of a fleecy wool underlay enabled sleepers to be more ‘settled’ and improved their own assessment of sleep quality. • Sleepers preferred wool blankets (when compared with cotton/acrylic blends) for their temperature regulation properties. • Wool sheepskin underlay was shown to be better at diffusing pressure points when compared with cotton sheets. • The use of wool-on sheepskin as underlay more than halved the incidence of lower back pressure ulcers. • The rate of weight gain in underweight newborns was 61% higher when sleeping on a wool underlay compared to a cotton sheet. • The incidence of allergies to wool are described in the scientific literature as ‘uncommon’ or ‘rare’

How DownWool works: DownWool is an innovative, high-end filling made of 70% down and 30% wool. Down has a very high insulating capacity despite being low weight. However, down only insulates as long as it is dry. Humid conditions substantially reduce its insulating effect. Wool has the property of insulating and absorbing moisture. As a result, the down remains drier for longer, and thus retains its very high insulation capacity. We achieve the best insulation and a perfectly dry sleeping environment with DownWoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s unique material combination, while keeping down its weight. DOWNWOOL* is an innovative HIGH-END filling composed of 70% down and 30% specially treated wool. Down has a very high insulation capacity and a low weight. This is why down is an ideal filling material for sleeping bags and jackets. However, down only provides insulation as long as it is dry. If humidity increases, the fine structure of down collapses. For this reason the insulating effect of down is considerably reduced in a damp environment. Wool has very good insulation properties and absorbs moisture without loosing its insulation capacity. This is the big advantage of wool over down. Furthermore, wool is very temperature-balancing and has an antibacterial effect. Its disadvantage compared to down is that its weight is slightly higher. In DownWool* we have combined both materials in a perfect ratio. To ensure a permanent combination of down and wool, we have developed a complex technical procedure. The big advantage of DownWool* is that, compared to pure down, it is not as sensitive to humidity and therefore provides better insulation if there is high humidity. Compared to pure wool fillings, DownWool* has the advantage that it is considerably lighter. It is important to Grüezi bag to develop sleeping bags which offer an outstanding sleeping climate whilst keeping their ecological footprint at a minimum. The Biopod DownWool Ice CompostAble is our first sleeping bag which is almost 100% compostable. In the industrial composting process, the materials used decompose within as little as 200 days. Conventional polyester on the other hand, takes over 400 years to decompose. In theory, you could even dispose of the sleeping bag on your own garden compost heap. Decomposition would, however, take much longer in that case. The colour pigments used to dye the material are also entirely degradable and ‘Made in Germany’. The insulating material for the Biopod DownWool Ice CompostAble is an innovative mix of renewable and biodegradable raw materials such as down and wool - DownWool. Because the life of a product has an extremely positive effect on its ecological balance, Grüezi bag only use materials that possess an extremely high mechanical durability. The sleeping bag can be refilled with DownWool or, if necessary, repaired by one of our service partners. A long product life is therefore guaranteed. In order to avoid unnecessary plastic waste, the sleeping bag comes in a robust paper bag. The storage bag is made of cotton. Alongside the excellent ecological footprint, the Biopod DownWool Ice CompostAble also has all the usual Grüezi bag characteristics; good insulation properties with light weight and small packing dimensions. How AlmWolle by lavalan® works: The body needs a lot of energy to control its temperature. Sheep’s wool balances the climate and thus takes care of part of the body’s temperature control. The rest of the energy can be used by the body to recover. The AlmWolle by lavalan® used in the Biopod sleeping bags serves as natural air conditioning: the body releases moisture at all times. However, if there is too much humidity in the sleeping bag, the body gets chilled and good-quality sleep is no longer possible. Wool absorbs moisture and releases it to the outside gradually, thus reducing cooling due to evaporation. This regulation allows for a warming or cooling effect, to allow a sense of well-being in the sleeping bag, which ensures relaxed sleep. In addition, wool also warms when it’s moist. Grüezi bag uses sheep’s wool from the Alpine region for its Biopod product line fillings. Robust, natural, biodegradable and renewable: the sheep’s wool, in this case the special AlmWolle by lavalan®, can be sheared annually.

Nature’s know-how for a comfortable climate and restorable sleep! Innovation: Down without any chambers or seams. The Biopod Hybrid Wool/Down is the result of decades of experience. What is particularly important for us is the climate. Only if you sleep well, you will be fit and rested the next morning. Here the natural air-conditioning effect of wool comes into play. In addition to providing insulation with wool, we have used infrared cameras to find out which parts of the body need more insulation. In these areas we have applied the newly developed solid down. Down often does not stay in one part of the sleeping bag, so that thermal bridges can be created by shifting. With solid down the down, similar to a fleece, is always kept fixed in one place – without any chambers or seams! To keep the body warm in an optimal way without the risk of heat accumulation, solid down was only applied in some parts. In the other areas, wool and microfibre are used. On the bottom side, where there is the whole weight of the sleeper, the microfibre has the function of providing support and drying quickly. By applying the materials exactly in the places where they are needed, an ideal climate with excellent insulation is created. Of course we have also worked on the cut of the sleeping bag. The finest goose down (90/10, 800+ cuin, RDS certified) is used to insulate the Biopod Down Hybrid Ice Extreme. The innovative V-shaped chamber system is supported by box chambers which are packed to an even higher density at points where your body is most sensitive. On top of this, additional side chambers provide for well-balanced insulation. An additional layer of insulation is provided by a layer of pure AlmWolle by lavalan®. This makes the sleeping bag unique. AlmWolle by lavalan® not only provides additional insulation, it can also absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water without feeling damp. This prevents condensation from forming on the inner side of the outer shell. The wool thereby protects the down from any incidental moisture, as only dry, fluffy down provides optimum insulation! The combination of these two insulating materials, down and wool, creates a warm, dry sleeping climate, which is the most important precondition for good, restful sleep. A sleeping bag simply stores the warmth generated by the person using it. Often, however, people are not really able to warm up their sleeping bags due to exhaustion or illness. When traveling, a sleeping bag should require as little space as possible. To pack as little as possible, there is the compression bag. Here the sleeping bag with the foot part is stuffed into it. When heâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s in it, push the air out with your knee and then pull it down with the straps. In order for the compression bag to withstand the pressure, the belt-cross was strengthened and a stronger outer material was used.
