FA Trophy holders Scarborough, managed by Colin Appleton entertained a strong Sheffield United XI in a pre-season friendly at the Athletic Ground on 16 August 1976. After Simon Stainrod fired the Blades ahead in the 5th minute, Boro equalised just two minutes later through Harry A Dunn, but Ian Hamilton restored United’s lead on 15 minutes and the score remained 2-1 at the interval. A terrific second half performance saw Boro fight back to win 4-2 with strikes from Rob Smith, Gerry Donoghue and Sean Marshall who netted the rebound after Blades keeper Steve Conroy had saved his spot kick.

8th august 1977 • ATT. 1,676 3 boro v 0 sheffield united

Sheffield United again visited the Athletic Ground the following pre-season, sending a reserve team on 8 August 1977. Boro had won the FA Trophy for the third time the previous season, and after a goalless first half, Colin Appleton’s side ran out 3-0 winners as new signings Dave Smith (2) and John Wilson found the net in the second half watched by a crowd of 1,676. The Boro side also included the likes of Dave Chapman, Sean Marshall, Harry Dunn and John Woodall.

12th august 1980 • ATT. 566 2 boro v 0 sheffield united

It was four years before the Blades again travelled to Scarborough for a preseason fixture, sending a reserve team on 12 August 1980, when first half goals from Gerry Donoghue(pen) and Bob Gauden secured Boro a 2-0 win. In goal for Sheffield United that day was 19-year old Keith Soloman, who tragically collapsed and died after a training session five months later, on 19 January 1981, a month short of his 20th birthday.

13th SEPTEMBER 1988 • ATT. 2,347 1 boro v 2 sheffield united (AET) The first ever competitive meeting at first team level occurred at the Athletic Ground on 13 September 1988 when the sides clashed in the final of the inaugural Yorkshire & Humberside Cup, a newly introduced pre-season tournament. Sheffield United took a 36th minute lead when Tony Agana crashed his shot past Boro keeper Kevin Blackwell, but a 75th minute cross from Gary Brook was controlled by Tommy Graham before he slammed in the equaliser. The score remained 1-1 at full time, and the Blades won the cup with a strike from pacey striker John Francis in the first period of extra time.

9th august 1989 • ATT. 1,222 1 boro v 3 sheffield united

The Blades again visited Scarborough in the Yorkshire & Humberside Cup the following season, this time for a group match on 9 August 1989. James Gannon fired the Blades in front, Gary Brook equalised for Boro, but United ran out 3-1 winners when Mark Morris headed in a corner from Gannon, and then Dane Whitehouse found the top corner from a tight angle. Boro keeper Ian Ironside fractured his cheekbone early in the match, causing him to miss the first month of the season.

23RD JULY 1994 • ATT. 708 2 boro v 1 sheffield united

Scarborough beat Sheffield United Reserves 2-1 in a pre-season friendly on 23 July 1994 watched by a crowd of 708. JOHN FAWCETT Former Scarborough FC Chairman and recent Club President of Scarborough Athletic FC shares his memories of the club and hopes for the future

Photo by Dave Barry / Scarborough Review

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

“THE SELL-OUT CROWD SHOWS THE ENTHUSIASM THERE IS FOR OUR RETURN” John Fawcett has heralded the return of football to Scarborough and believes the move home will deliver a bright future for Scarborough Athletic FC. Fawcett was involved as a former Director and Chairman at Scarborough FC, presiding over the 1977 FA Trophy victory under Colin Appleton. Following the formation of Scarborough Athletic back in 2007, Fawcett was given the role of club President, a position he held until 2016. He has continued to follow Boro whilst the club has played in exile at Queensgate, and is thrilled that the return home has finally arrived. “It’s great news for everybody involved. I’m delighted that we can return to the town at a fantastic new facility. I went to have a look around at the recent Open Day and the range of facilities is just what the town needs.”

“We’re all very grateful to Bridlington Town for providing us with a place to play at for the last ten years, they offered us use of Queensgate when we really needed it. But we had to come home to keep the club going and the new ground now gives us the platform to move forward. The ten years in exile has seen Athletic climb two divisions from the NCEL Division One through to the Evo-Stik North, and with the move home Fawcett predicts the club moving higher up the league pyramid. “My favourite moments over the last ten years have to be the two promotions, they were great occasions that meant so much to us all. The game today will be an emotional day, it’s tremendous that this day has finally arrived and we can really kick on from here. “I’m sure our gates are going to increase considerably now the club is based back in Scarborough. We’ve had two promotions in the last ten years but we want to progress further up the leagues and being back in town will help us towards that.” The time played away from the town has seen the club lose a number of key officials and supporters that will not be around to see Scarborough

be missing people like Dave Holland and Richard Adamson, who both put hours and hours into making the club a success. They made massive contributions to getting us to this point, they would be so proud to see us finally coming home.” As a former Chairman of Scarborough FC, Fawcett still holds many memories of the trips to Wembley as the club made it to four FA Trophy finals in five years during the 1970s under Colin Appleton.

48

“I’ll always remember the Stafford Rangers FA Trophy Final in 1976, it was an incredible game that was won with almost the last kick of the game by Sean Marshall. Then to experience the crowds that came out to see the open top bus parade was unbelievable. It was so busy we couldn’t get the bus round to the town hall, we had to get off on Falconer’s Road and walk the rest of the way to the town hall.” But for now John is simply looking forward to seeing Boro back playing in the town for the first time in a decade. “It’s tremendous that we can now become a true community club based in Scarborough, there are no
