AND THE CATALAN POETS

With over 200 works published together for the first time, this limited-edition collection is a synthesis of poetry and surrealism that explores the life of the artist as a ‘poet through art’.

A COMPENDIUM OF RARE IMAGES “Miró and the Catalan Poets” follows in the tradition of superb, large-format art books by Enciclopèdia Catalana dedicated to the great names of contemporary Catalan art, such as Picasso or Dalí. This time around, the protagonist is one of the most valued and universal of all Catalan artists—Joan Miró. We have taken a unique approach in the form of a ‘book of all books’ which explores the relationship this global artist shared from his modest beginnings to the end of his long life, with local Catalan poets. Joan Miró made no distinction between a literary poem and a visual poem. In fact, his work can be “seen” and “read” at the same time, if it is read like a “modern” poem—actively and dynamically, breaking with literalness, evoking matter and space, with an inner musical rhythm filled with pauses, with silences, with emptiness, semantic decapitation, spatialism, superimposition, and above all, pure colors. Boasting over 200 full-color images published together for the first time, this set showcases a brilliant compilation of all the works Miró did for esteemed poets such as J.V. Foix, Salvador Espriu, Joan Brossa, Joan Salvat-Papasseit, and others. In many cases, the original editions were printed in extremely limited runs, therefore, bringing them together in one stunning volume is an extraordinary cultural and editorial initiative that is certain to enthrall even though most well-versed Miró enthusiasts.

THE LIMITED EDITION “Miró and the Catalan Poets” is a limited-edition collector’s item, with only 500 copies printed in English. It comes in a sumptuous solander which contains an imposing large-format volume with over 200 gorgeous works which have rarely been seen, both within Catalonia and beyond. Blazing in spectacular Mironian colors, this collection of works gives new insight on the artist’s universal connection with his homeland, Catalonia, its land, and its poets. Introduced by renowned writer and gallerist Jean Frémon and Rosa Maria Malet, director of the Fundació Joan Miró since 1980, the set also includes a smaller volume which has been translated into English. It contains 250 further images, along with a study which revisits Miró’s relationships with some of the most prestigious names in Catalan literature, which had not been subject to previous study or diffusion outside of Catalonia, proving to be a delectable visual and intellectual treat for the most avid collectors of Miró’s artwork. This exhilarating project was written and directed by Vicenç Altaió, one of today’s top experts on the painter. Further collaborators include the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, in Palma de Mallorca.

entirely by hand. To honor its past, the group continues to strive for the same level of innovation and craftsmanship. Today, the works published by Enciclopèdia Catalana dominate the local market thanks to their outstanding level of quality and exclusivity, making them an indisputable reference for thousands of readers. Since its beginning—in a time when the Catalan language was oppressed, and even prohibited— the group has become a symbol and leader in the Catalonian publishing world. Its mission is to promote and support the Catalan language and culture, not only within the Catalan-speaking territories but on an international level as well. Following in this tradition, we are passionate about bringing the art of universal Catalan artists beyond the confines of Catalonia, Spain or Europe, and into the consciousness of the Englishspeaking world.
