Lá vem ela com histórias

Quando há mais de vinte anos comecei a frequentar Almada, graças às férias de verão na casa dos avós, havia um certo charme na forma como via a cidade. Não pelo carácter pitoresco das ruas, mas pela vida social que observava na altura. No tempo da faculdade, a ideia tornou-se mais real. Fiz amigos almadenses que manifestavam um espírito mais independente e uma concepção da cultura e da vida nocturna muito desenvolvida para quem vivia no distrito de Setúbal. Foi o município da Margem Sul que cresceu mais depressa, mas se durante anos associei esse crescimento essencialmente à vida cultural, fui descobrindo que o amor dos almadenses pela sua terra se deve a um conjunto de factores que tornam a cidade num lugar aprazível para viver: facilidade de mobilidade e proximidade com Lisboa, praias extensas perfeitas para brincar com os miúdos e ver o incrível pôr-do-sol, um parque que é o verdadeiro pulmão e muito activo e, mais recentemente, a aposta numa restauração contemporânea, que acompanha as exigências das novas gerações. A autarquia tem projectos para o futuro, mas há sobretudo uma visão empreendedora dos «agora» adultos que aqui cresceram. Na sua generalidade, procuram inovar o negócio, mas numa óptica de estreitar relações e aproveitar a tranquilidade que a cidade oferece, face à capital, construindo famílias com tempo para aproveitar a vida. Há espaço para todos, incluindo para si. No poupar está o ganho O Banco de Portugal define que a compra de uma casa requer, pelo menos, uma entrada de capitais próprios de 10% sobre o valor de aquisição. Ora, esta é uma questão que acreditamos que tem de ser trabalhada de raiz. Com a crise económica a que assistimos entre 2010 e 2014, a ideia de poupança começou a ganhar outra importância. No entanto, tendo em conta a herança cultural dos portugueses nos últimos 40 anos, este é um paradigma ainda longe de ser compreendido e alcançado pela grande maioria dos consumidores. Almada: Um segredo à vista de todos Por Marina Soares Era eu uma fresca menina alfacinha, nascida e criada na cidade das sete colinas, quando comecei a ouvir falar da «outra banda». Assim chamavam a este lado do Tejo, de onde vos escrevo. O misterioso território além-ponte, espécie de terra de ninguém, julgava eu. Descobri que não poderia estar mais enganada, quando nos mudámos para cá. Num instante, passei a viver no temido subúrbio dos bairros-dormitórios, a tão estigmatizada Margem Sul. «Mas era assim tão mau?», perguntam vocês. Nunca foi. E explicar isto aos «outros»? A palavra Almada apavorava a malta de Lisboa. «Ui, que longe! O rio, as filas da ponte, a portagem, os bairros esquisitos, os graffiti e os gangues? Não há lá nada, Lisboa é que é!» Às tantas, desisti de tentar partilhar a nossa qualidade de vida e comecei a encarar esta cidade como um segredo. Quando chegou a altura de escolher uma casa e constituir família, não tive dúvidas: ALMADA! Os meus filhos nasceram no Hospital Garcia de Orta. Andam em escolas públicas, ao pé de casa. Vão a pé para a natação e para a ginástica. Estão seguros e felizes, num bairro onde toda a gente diz «bom dia!» e ainda não se juntaram a nenhum gangue, mas ando de olho… (se eu não der por isso, a vizinha da frente dá de certeza!). Nunca falta o que fazer e atravessar o rio, (quase) só para ir trabalhar. Esta é a minha última tentativa de explicar aos «outros» porque é tão bom criar uma família em Almada. O meu Top 5. Vale o que vale, mas confiem em mim: ‘tá-se bem! Os Almadenses: São especiais. Em adolescente conheci-os interventivos, preocupados com o mundo, a fervilhar de ideias. Músicos, poetas, bailarinos, membros de grupos de teatro, presidentes de associações socioculturais, nunca estavam parados. Mesmo eu, nada feita dessa massa, passei de raspão por muito disto. Era impossível crescer em Almada sem subir, uma vez que fosse, a um palco qualquer. E que divertidas as noites de ensaios nas Casas da Juventude (o famoso Ponto de Encontro e aquela vista sobre o Tejo!) Não somos gente de «sofá» e agrada-me pensar que as novas gerações ainda trazem consigo essa inquietude. A minha filha mais velha já actuou no Incrível Almadense. É um começo...

O «Quintal» da malta: É assim que chamamos ao Parque da Paz. Estamos lá caídos fim-de-semana sim, fim-de-semana sim! Corremos, pedalamos, «piquenicamos», brincamos muito e até dormitamos à sombra das árvores. No último domingo de cada mês, enchemos a sacola de legumes e fruta do Mercado da Horta (ver pág. 16) e, às vezes, já não chega nada a casa, que o ar livre e exercício abrem o apetite... Cultura que nos engrandece: O cartão de visita da cidade e o nosso orgulho maior! Sem me alongar (para saber mais, pág. 10), eis o que temos: Em Junho, a Mostra Internacional de Artes para o pequeno Público - Sementes, da responsabilidade do Teatro Extremo, faz as delícias dos meus pequenos. Em Julho, o Festival de Teatro de Almada - com cada vez mais expressão nacional e internacional. Em Setembro/Outubro, a imperdível Quinzena de Dança de Almada - International Dance Festival. No resto do ano, seguimos a programação do Teatro Municipal Joaquim Benite (que vemos da janela!), das Casas da Cultura, das Bibliotecas Municipais e do Museu da Cidade. Há sempre algo a acontecer e tanto para fazer. O velho que se faz novo: Em Almada, tudo mexe, tudo vale a pena ver de novo, porque está melhor desde a última vez. Cacilhas e Cova da Piedade, freguesias tradicionalmente envelhecidas, estão agora em revolução! Ele é comércio apelativo, novos restaurantes, mercados, ruas fechadas ao trânsito, esplanadas e pessoas na rua, a viver a cidade. Vale a pena espreitar a Rua Cândido dos Reis e almoçar no pátio do Mercado da Romeira. E que dizer da festa espontânea que se arma no quiosque Dá Cá Cilhas, logo à saída dos barcos, à sexta-feira ao fim da tarde? O nosso mar: 13 km de praias e eu ia deixá-las de fora? Seja verão ou inverno, de manhãzinha ou pelo sunset, para banhos de mar ou para comer peixinho grelhado, nunca passamos muito tempo longe da costa. E agora também temos o festival Sol da Caparica e o recéminaugurado Parque Desportivo do Atlântico. A parte boa? Não apanhamos trânsito na ponte. REVISTA O2SUL

DESCUBRA O CIRCUITO DA BIODIVERSIDADE A Estação da Biodiversidade do Parque da Paz é um percurso pedestre circular de 2 quilómetros, que o leva a conhecer os habitats existentes e o convida a descobrir a abundante diversidade biológica. Existem 6 painéis informativos sobre a fauna e flora, com algumas das espécies mais emblemáticas de animais e plantas existentes no parque, como aves, répteis, anfíbios, mamíferos, insectos e plantas em flor. Encontre essa diversidade num lago, em prados floridos ou num bosque mediterrânico com sobreiros e pinheiros antigos. Isso é que vai ser aprender e maravilhar-se! ALUGUE UMA BICLA O TOMA LÁ BICLAS, do quiosque TOMA LÁ PAZ é um serviço que disponibiliza bicicletas para passear sozinho (se alugar a pequena) ou com mais uma pessoa (se preferir a grande, com 2 selins). É uma óptima maneira de conhecer o parque inteiro em menos tempo e pode tornar-se numa viagem bem romântica e/ou divertida, se partilhar com o amigo, a cara-metade ou o rebento. O quiosque tem música ao vivo todos os domingos, o programa perfeito para finalizar o passeio. É fácil ser feliz.

CICLOVIAS PARA OS MAIS AVENTUREIROS Se quiser ir mais longe, saiba que tem uma ciclovia até ao Almada Fórum (a 1,2 km) e outra que o(a) leva a Cacilhas (num percurso de 3,4 km). Ficam na entrada do Centro-Sul.

COMPRE NO MERCADO DA HORTA Somos adeptos da economia que gira em torno dos pequenos produtores, pois acreditamos que contribuímos para um comércio mais justo e um estilo de vida mais saudável. É por isso que somos fãs do Mercado da Horta do Parque da Paz, onde vários produtores locais dão a conhecer frutos e hortícolas «acabados de colher». Há mais: mel, pão, doces e compotas, sementes, plantas mediterrânicas e até cosmética natural são algumas das coisas que encontra neste mercado, que acontece todos os últimos domingos do mês, de Março a Setembro, e onde ainda pode conversar com quem produziu a compota que acabou de adquirir. É a cidade a criar proximidades.

Podíamos falar-lhe da vista do Cristo-Rei. Ou da longa extensão de praias ao longo da paisagem protegida da Arriba Fóssil. Mas isso seria demasiado clássico.

Do miradouro que delimita o perímetro do castelo, observamos os barcos atracados e cacilheiros que atravessam o rio e em jeito de agradecimento sorrimos: aqui fomos acolhidos.

P CAIS DO GINJAL O passeio entre Cacilhas e o Jardim do Rio é o escape perfeito para quem visita a tão famosa zona junto aos barcos para Lisboa, ou chega da capital depois de mais um dia de trabalho. Ideal para quem gosta de passear à beira-rio, sem nunca perder a ligação às inﬂuências urbanas – há dezenas de graﬃti ao longo do mural que acompanha o passeio –, é o momento trashy de lazer. Experimente um dos famosos restaurantes com esplanadas quase em cima do rio – Ponto Final e Atira-te ao Rio – e aproveite o esplendor do fim do percurso, no Jardim do Rio, onde já ficámos horas a pensar em nada. TRAFARIA Esta pequena vila de pescadores, com uma história curiosa – de uma zona ribeirinha submersa, há 18 milhões de anos, ao porto mais importante do concelho –, é a zona residencial mais pitoresca de Almada, embora uma das suas perspectivas não agrade a todos: a de uma zona fabril. Apesar de concorrido, é ainda assim o lugar mais tranquilo do município, procurado até pelas gentes da capital, pelo peixe e comida tradicional.

JARDIM DO CASTELO A vista panorâmica exibe Belém, de um lado, o Terreiro do Paço, no outro extremo, e tudo o que embeleza a costa lisboeta, entre ambos. Até as pontas da Serra de Sintra espreitam por trás da moldura alfacinha, disse o nosso colaborador Nuno Cardoso. Revitalizado pela Câmara Municipal nos últimos anos, este cantinho, ainda resguardado do excesso de turistas,

CASA DA CERCA É a casa de arte contemporânea mais famosa do concelho de Almada, com exposições e actividades que se distinguem, mas far-se-ia valer apenas pelo exterior! A Casa da Cerca, situada numa colina na zona histórica da cidade e com um jardim de fazer inveja, é dos lugares mais propícios à evasão, com uma vista sobre o rio Tejo e a capital de tirar o fôlego. Nem mesmo a proximidade com a Ponte 25 de Abril – de onde chega o burburinho dos carros – ou a eventual presença de curiosos nos tira a paz que sentimos neste sítio, onde é possível aproveitar a esplanada da cafetaria (que vale bem a pena, acrescentamos), visitar um jardim botânico ou explorar labirintos onde nos podemos sentar e olhar o infinito. Que nunca se transforme num hotel!

AQUI HÁ CULTURA & NOITE...

por Nuno Card oso Dos clássicos às propostas menos óbvias, Almada tem um mundo de evasão, seja pela reflexão artística ou pela diversão pura e dura. Nuno Cardoso traça-lhe o roteiro que não deveria estar a perder. APRECIE O MELHOR DA ARTE URBANA Uma menina que brinca com um pequeno cacilheiro nas mãos ou um grupo de trabalhadores navais da Lisnave fazem parte dos motivos pintados nas fachadas dos edifícios, em torno do Mercado da Romeira, a caminho de Cacilhas. As manifestações de arte urbana que por aqui vivem, alusivas ao tema «Vivências na Cidade», surgiram há dois anos, quando a autarquia decidiu reabilitar a zona da Romeira, até ali abandonada. Vale a pena investir algum tempo por aqui e apreciar o conjunto de graﬃti, antes ou depois de uma ida ao food court. Na cidade onde já se organizou, em tempos, a Mostra de Graﬃti de Almada, não pode deixar de espreitar também as obras de arte que se estendem por largos metros no Cais do Ginjal.

DIVAGUE PELAS MELHORES EXPOSIÇÕES Há vários anos a manter viva e de boa saúde a arte em Almada, a Casa da Cerca é sempre sinónimo de um bom programa cultural. Até 20 de Outubro, o centro mantém a exposição «ABC da Europa Racista», a primeira da artista peruana Daniela Ortiz, em Portugal. Uma crítica inteligente ao poder colonial, patriarcal e capitalista. À parte disso, esta casa dedicada à arte abraça sempre exposições actuais, pertinentes e gratuitas, pondo a cultura ao serviço da sociedade. As actividades para crianças e famílias também são frequentes e muito enriquecedoras. Ir a Almada sem ir à Casa da Cerca é como ir a Roma e não ver o Papa!

O Fórum Municipal Romeu Correia tem uma biblioteca aberta todo o ano, à excepção de Agosto, e uma pacífica sala de estudo e leitura, mas é também a casa que dá voz ao cinema independente e de autor, numa sala intimista, onde não há barulho de pipocas. Surf: Alguém chamou o desporto-rei? «Fiz uma aula de surf e sobrevivi para contar a história!» Numa primeira leitura, muitos poderão dizer que fiz um título sensacionalista. O típico clickbait, para a geração habituada à Internet. Afinal, quem é que vai a uma aula de surf, se lhe passa pela cabeça não sobreviver? Eu. Sou uma pessoa cheia de medo de falecer. Entrar num mar cheio de ondas não é, à partida, uma experiência que considere agradável. Spoiler alert: vim a comprovar que não poderia estar mais errada, mas lá chegaremos. Para verem como o struggle é real, tenho pesadelos recorrentes onde sou encurralada pelo mar. Por isso, nunca achei que «eu e as ondas» fosse o meu estilo de vida. E se acham que sou uma atada, que nunca fez nada que envolvesse um pouco de risco, saibam que não podiam estar mais errados. Já fiz aéreos, treino roller derby e pratico a arte extremamente perigosa de dizer o que penso. Ainda assim, aceitei o desafio da O2 Sul, porque é uma vergonha viver em Almada e não saber o que é o surf. Liguei a toda a gente de quem gostava para me despedir (piada fácil) e lá fui eu para a Costa. Não levei cera e não fiz umas californianas mais em conta. Falha minha, eu sei! Com o dinheiro que poupava no cabeleireiro, poderia preparar uma viagem ao Havai. Tanto quanto sei, ninguém pode ser do surf e não fazer uma trip da caça às ondas. Foi na Praia da Cornélia que aconteceu magia. Tive uma grande sorte com o Bruno – professor e dono da escola South Bay Surf School – que não me poderia ter recebido com maior simpatia e disponibilidade. Fiquem a saber que até boleia me deu para a praia, o que significa que o estereótipo de «surfista boa onda» confere. Para além da simpatia em pessoa, Bruno Santos é formado, pela Universidade Lusófona de Lisboa, em Treinador de Surf, o que dá uma segurança extra quando temos receio de ficar perdidas para sempre no mar. Estava um dia de sol espectacular, tendo em conta o Inverno que temos tido em pleno Agosto. As ondas não me pareciam perigosas e havia crianças a fazer a aula comigo. Isso e o facto de ter sido informada previamente de que os grupos nunca ultrapassam as 12 pessoas também me serenou. As minhas hipóteses de sobrevivência aumentavam. Ainda não tinha ido para o mar e já havia vivido o melhor momento de sempre – da aula e da vida! Deram-me um fato tamanho S e serviu! Ora, esta que vos escreve já não usa um S há uns sólidos

... E DESPORTO 10 anos! Foi um momento de pura glória e a prova de que não é preciso pesar menos de 50 quilos para quebrar as nossas próprias barreiras. Bruno volta a fazer magia e ensina-nos a subir para uma prancha, ainda na areia. Corpos deitados, mãos estrategicamente colocadas à altura do peito e perna de trás que aprende a dobrar, num move cheio de técnica e estilo. E já está! Mais rápido do que o Usain Bolt a cruzar a meta, colocamo-nos de pé! Pernas ﬂectidas, braços preparados para alguma imprevisibilidade, olhar no horizonte (é romântico, eu sei) e lá estamos nós a surfar! A prova-de-fogo veio depois, quando fomos para o mar. É claro que engoli água, senti-me humilhada pela facilidade das crianças em fazer surf, mas venci. Mesmo com tanta peripécia, tudo valeu a pena quando finalmente consegui pôr-me de pé, por mais de 5 segundos. Depois do célebre momento, já me imaginava num qualquer campeonato de surf e até me sentei na prancha a olhar para o mar. Eu sei, #cliché, mas tinha de ser feito. Posto isto, aceitem a dica de amiga que vos deixo: se o mar é um dos vossos arqui-inimigos, mas gostavam mesmo de ultrapassar esse medo ou sentir o quão bom é fazer desporto no mar, não hesitem em procurar a South Bay Surf School, liderada pelo Bruno. Para além de vos dar um swag do caraças, o único perigo que correm é o de ficarem viciados. Palavra de wannabe.

Trata-se da burrata DOP (Denominação de Origem Protegida), típica da região de Puglia, o que a torna «mais fofinha, mais doce e mais saborosa», explica Luca Salvadori, que abriu no ano passado o italiano La Cantina, no centro de Almada. É recheada com stracciatella, vem acompanhada no prato com tomate-cereja e rúcula e é um bilhete directo até Itália. Na cozinha de Salvadori, que abriu o lisboeta Il Covo há três anos, casam-se os frescos portugueses com técnicas e produtos italianos. Neste restaurante de ambiente caloroso e decoração rústica, que faz lembrar as cantinas italianas, produzem-se diariamente oito tipos diferentes de massa fresca, com farinhas italianas, a partir das 9h30. Começam cedo e começam bem!

Até há poucos anos, o panorama gastronómico de Almada associava-se a duas realidades: às tascas com preços simpáticos, no centro da cidade, e aos restaurantes de peixe e marisco, imagem de marca de Cacilhas. O desenvolvimento da restauração, impulsionado pelo aumento do turismo na capital, acabou por se alastrar para a periferia, traduzindo-se em bons e eclécticos restaurantes espalhados pelo concelho. CACHUPA | TIA BÉ Há mais de uma década que os sabores africanos se sentam à mesa nesta casa da Margem Sul, que foi crescendo com o tempo e já se encontra em três moradas: Cova da Piedade, Romeira e Cruz de Pau, as duas primeiras em Almada. A cabo-verdiana cachupa é um dos pratos mais icónicos da Tia Bé, o nome pelo qual é conhecida a proprietária que gere esta marca com a filha, Ana. As doses são generosas e a cachupa, quando chega à mesa numa caçarola, é a definição de comida de conforto. Além da versão tradicional, também se confecciona uma vegetariana, com a couve e o feijão habituais e o tofu a substituir carne e enchidos. Na carta, há ainda espaço para pratos angolanos, como a muamba, e lusitanos, como um típico cozido à portuguesa. No restaurante da Romeira, onde sobressai o branco e alguns padrões africanos, a nova esplanada é mais uma razão para marcar uma almoçarada.

Orgulhosa mãe da minha terceira filha chow chow, a Milha, posso dizer que agradeço aos cães que já tive muitas das milhas que tenho percorrido, neste lindo país à beira-mar plantado. Ainda assim, sou aquele contra-senso de dona que recorda com carinho uma noite lisboeta de Santo António com a Luna (minha anterior «cãopanheira»), mas que, na altura do convite para este artigo, se arrepiou só de pensar no que seria arranjar espaço para si e para mais uma felpuda no «tetris» dos areais de Agosto! Feitas as contas, agradeço o desafio, ou teria deixado passar a oportunidade de lhe proporcionar um dos passeios mais felizes dos seus quatro meses de vida, que agora vos convido a abraçar, caso sejam nativos ou meros turistas ocasionais. A Costa de Caparica tem uma das maiores extensões de praia contínua de Portugal, com cerca de 30 quilómetros de areal a perder de vista. A Milha levou os donos a descobrir a vila piscatória da Cova do Vapor; a desfilar na passerelle – paredão da Costa de Caparica; e a comer ostras com vista para o pôr-dosol, na Praia Nova. Acompanhem-nos neste roteiro. COVA DO VAPOR Vila piscatória com uma certa vibe jamaicana, muito frequentada por surfistas (desde que se mediatizou a onda particular que aqui se forma na conﬂuência do Tejo com o Atlântico), mas onde também notámos de imediato a presença de outros «orgulhosos donos». A Milha cheirou muitas amizades fugazes;

Em época balnear (de 1 de Junho a 15 de Setembro), tenha especial atenção à temperatura e às multidões. Deve: Planear o trajecto. Nós escolhemos fazer este passeio ao fim da tarde de um dia de «clássico», aproveitando a janela de oportunidade de um país que pára para assistir a futebol! Escolher o início ou ﬁnal do dia, por causa do calor excessivo. Há que respeitar as patas descalças do seu «melhor amigo». Evitar os areais concessionados. O civismo começa em nós. Levar muita água. Leve para o seu patudo o dobro do que leva para si, pois ele também tem mais duas patas e... corre muito mais!

sentou-se à proa dos barcos de pesca, na esperança, típica de uma adolescente, da aproximação de um Dog Di Caprio; e descobriu os prazeres de correr na areia molhada e de lamber cascas de amêijoas. PAREDÃO DA COSTA DE CAPARICA Passeio de praia não tem de ser necessariamente na areia para ser feliz! A Milha fez tantos amigos caninos no cimento, que nem reparou nos equipamentos vermelhos que seguiam em direcção ao Barbas. Nós, os donos, também os ignorámos, e preferimos experimentar as ostras, a sangria e a simpatia dos funcionários de esplanada do restaurante Sentido do Mar, de onde também é possível que o vosso patudo fique apenas sentado a olhar para o mar, procurando-lhe o sentido. PRAIA NOVA Praia não concessionada, onde peludos caninos podem conviver entre eles e com humanos mais - ou menos - peludos também. A Milha ficou tão deslumbrada com o pôr-do-sol que não se entusiasmou muito com outros potenciais amigos. Em contrapartida, foi vê-la a desafiar o dono para correr e saltar à beira da água. Eu, e tantos outros espectadores, ficámos deliciados. Proud mother of my third chow chow child - Milha -, I can say that I thank every dog I raised for many of the miles I have covered in this gorgeous country sitting by the sea. And yet, I am that kind of contradictory owner who fondly remembers a Santo António night in Lisbon with Luna (my former “dogpanion”), but got the shivers when was invited to write this article, just thinking about finding room for herself and the ﬂuffy one in the usual “tetris” of the August sands. All in all, I appreciate the challenge, otherwise I had missed the chance of offering her one of the happiest walks of her four months of life, which I now invite you to embrace, as natives or occasional tourists.

Costa de Caparica is one of the largest stretches of continuous beach in Portugal, with around 30 kilometres of endless sand. Milha took the owners to discover the fishing village of Cova do Vapor; to parade in the catwalk - the Costa de Caparica breakwater; and to eat oysters with a sunset view, in Praia Nova. Join us on this tour. COVA DO VAPOR A fishing village with a certain Jamaican vibe, popular among surfers (since the particular wave that forms here at the junction of the Tagus with the Atlantic has been well reported in the media), but where we also immediately spotted the presence of other “proud owners”. Milha smelled many ephemeral friendships; sat at the bow of the fishing boats, hoping, like a During the bathing season (from 1st June to 15h September), pay special attention to the temperature and the crowds. We chose to go for this walk in the late afternoon and on a football classic day, taking advantage of the window of opportunity given by a country that stops to watch football! Milha was so dazzled with the sunset that she didn’t get very excited with the other potential friends. On the other hand, you could see her challenging the owner to run and jump near the water. I and many other spectators were delighted.. Because it is the city I chose to live in and I wanted to create proximity between my workplace and the kids’ schools. DO YOU FEEL ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE DAILY QUALITY OF LIFE AND LIFESTYLE? I feel a great difference... Previously, it would take me at least an hour to arrive in Lisbon (I always used public transportation), now I can have lunch at home. I have the freedom to travel by foot (or bike) with no jams, no traﬃc, no cost. I see the bad side whenever I want. IS THE SOUTH BAY ENTREPRENEURSHIP RECOMMENDABLE? Yes, please! Estúdio AMATAM: Sensitivity above all. They started with a team of two people, focused on the will to shape the creativity in the fields of Architecture, Urbanism and Design. Amidst the economic crisis, in 2013, they set to work with the required dedication and enthusiasm to make a business successful. They opened a small studio, in Almada’s historical centre, where they run projects that turn into a variety of works. Integrated and cross-cutting solutions with due technical, aesthetic, functional, sustainable and, above all, sensorial parameters. SHELLFISH PLATTER | CABRINHA The diversity and freshness of the shellfish received every day and the eclectic wine cellar with more than 50 national references are two of the reasons why this place has become a mandatory restaurant in Almada, especially when eating seafood is part of the plan. There are almost 20 types of shellfish that may and should be ordered in many portions and shared in a laden table: prawns (boiled or al ajillo), lobsters, clams, whelks, bean clams, oysters, goose barnacles or murices. This shellfish restaurant, next to the ferries in Cacilhas, has always plenty of people, even though it has a seating capacity of 120 diners. It has been like this for 40 years. Before or after your meal, it is worth going for a walk by the riverside to Ginjal, just next door. There are eight veal or chicken burger options, all of them named after types of vessels, and two vegetarian ones, based on beetroot and chickpeas. Corveta has veal, Azorean cheese, fresh mushrooms, watercress, grilled tomato, caramelized onion and a honey and mustard sauce - it is to die for! All options may come in a brioche bun or a homemade bolo do caco, prepared in a plant that the owner, João Marques, has in Quinta do Conde. CACHUPA | TIA BÉ For more than a decade, African ﬂavours sit at the table in this South Bay establishment, which expanded over time and is now present in three places: Cova da Piedade, Romeira and Cruz de Pau (the former two in Almada). The Cape Verdian cachupa is one of the most iconic dishes of Tia Bé, name by which the owner that manages this brand together with her daughter Ana is known. The portions are generous and cachupa, arriving at the table in a casserole, is the definition of comfort food. Besides the traditional version, there is also a vegetarian one, with the usual cabbage and beans, but with tofu replacing the meat and sausages. In the menu, there is still room for Angolan dishes, such as muamba, and Portuguese classics, like a typical cozido à portuguesa (Portuguese stew). Until just few years ago, Almada’s gastronomic landscape was associated with one of two realities: the nicely priced tascas, in the city centre, or the fish and seafood establishments, brand image of Cacilhas. The restaurant sector uprise, driven by the tourism increase in the capital, spread to the outskirts, translating into good eclectic places across the municipality. BURRATA DOP Di ANDRIA | LA CANTINA DI CHEF LUCA SALVADORI It looks like mozzarella, but it’s not! It is burrata PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), typical from the Puglia region, which makes it “softer, sweeter and tastier”, explains Luca Salvadori, who opened last year the Italian restaurant La Cantina in the Almada city centre. Filled with stracciatella and served in the plate with cherry tomatoes and rocket, the burrata is a direct ﬂight to Italy. In Salvadori’s kitchen (he had opened the Il Covo, three years ago in Lisbon), Portuguese fresh produce is matched with Italian techniques and products. In this warm rustic restaurant, resembling the old Italian cantinas, eight different types of fresh pasta, using Italian ﬂour, are prepared daily from 9.30am. They start early and they start well! URAMAKI SPICY TUNA | SOUL SUSHI It emerged in the same place where Sushic used to be (Almada’s best sushi restaurant for many), by the hands of someone who worked there. ... AND SPORTS It was a moment of pure glory and the proof that you don’t need to weigh less that 50 kilos to break your own barriers. Bruno does his magic again and teaches us how to stand on the board, while still on the sand. Bodies laid down, hands strategically placed at the height of the chest and rear leg learning how to bend, in a move full of technique and style. And - voilà! - faster than Usain Bolt crossing the finish line, we are standing! Bent legs, arms ready for any unpredictability, eyes on the horizon (it’s romantic, I know) and there we are, surfing! The decisive test came later, when we went into the sea. Of course I drank water and felt humiliated by the children surfing with ease, but I won. After all the ups and downs, it was all worth it when I finally managed to stand for more than 5 seconds. After that notorious moment, I could already see myself in some surf championship and I even sat on the board, facing the sea. I know, #cliché, but it had to be done. That said, accept this friend’s tip: if the ocean is one of your archenemies, but you would really like to overcome that fear or feel how good it is to practice sports in the sea, don’t hesitate to look for the South Bay Surf School, led by Bruno. Surf: Did someone call theking of sports? «I had a surf lesson and survived to tell the story!» In the first reading, many could say that I wrote a sensational title. The classic clickbait, for the Internet generation. After all, who takes a surf lesson thinking about not surviving? Me. I’m a person scared to death of dying. Walking into a sea full of waves is not a pleasant experience for me in the first place. Spoiler alert: I proved myself wrong, but we’ll get there. So that you see how much the struggle is real, I have recurring nightmares where I am trapped by the sea. That’s why I never thought that “me and the waves” was my lifestyle. And if you think I am a dork, who never did anything involving a little bit of risk, you could not be more wrong. I have tried aerials, practice roller derby and exercise the extremely dangerous art of speaking my mind. Still, I accepted O2 Sul’s challenge, because it is a shame to live in Almada and not knowing what surf is. I called everyone I love to say goodbye (easy joke) and went to Costa. I didn’t bring wax and didn’t do cheap highlights. My fault, I know! With the money I would save in the hairdresser, I could organise a trip to Hawaii. As far as I know, nobody can be a surf fan without a wave hunting trip.

Magic happened at Cornelia beach. I was extremely lucky with Bruno - professor and owner of the South Bay Surf School - who could not have welcomed me with greater sympathy and readiness. Know that he even offered me a ride to the beach, meaning that the “easy going surfer” stereotype checks. Besides his genuine friendliness, Bruno Santos received a degree in Surf Instructor by Universidade Lusófona in Lisbon, which is reassuring when we fear becoming forever lost in sea.

It was a wonderful sunny day, taking into account the winter we had in August. The waves didn’t look dangerous and there were kids taking the lesson with me. This, together with the fact that I had been previously informed that the groups are never larger than 12 people, also settled me. My chances of survival were increasing. I had not yet gone into the sea and I had already experienced the best moment ever - of this class and of my life! They gave me a size S and it fit! Well, this one writing you had not wore an S for ten solid years!

GO TO THE THEATRE! With an asymmetric and peculiar architecture, the Joaquim Benite Municipal Theatre cannot go unnoticed. This theatre “sanctuary” in Almada, with the second largest downstage of the country, hosts every year Almada’s International Theatre Festival and the Sementes festival and organises Almada’s Theatre Show. This venue has also an exhibition area, an experimental room for smaller shows and a recreation centre to keep the younger ones occupied, while the plays go on. WATCH THE SUNSET, WITH STYLE Drinking a good wine or a refreshing cocktail usually means getting a little high. In this case, 50 metres high, if you go up to Boca do Vento - Cocktail Bar & Tapas, the bar just next to the elevator with the same name. The clear view over the coastal Lisbon, the Tagus river and the 25th April Bridge is a privilege for those who sit at this terrace, where you can contemplate a memorable sunset, the kick-off of a promising night. From the classics to the less obvious suggestions, Almada has an entire world of escape, either by the artistic reflection or the pure and simple diversion. Nuno Cardoso crafts the itinerary that you shouldn’t be missing. ENJOY THE BEST OF STREET ART A little girl playing with a small cacilheiro in her hands or a group of Lisnave naval workers are some of the motifs painted on the building façades surrounding the Romeira Market, on the way to Cacilhas. The street art expressions that live around here, alluding to the theme “Experiences in the City”, appeared two years ago, when the city hall decided to rehabilitate the Romeira area, abandoned until then. It is worth spending some time enjoying the graﬃti pieces, before or after paying a visit to the food court. In the city that has once organised Almada’s Graﬃti Show, you should also have a look at the art pieces stretching for several metres in Cais do Ginjal.

WANDER THROUGH THE BEST EXHIBITIONS Keeping art alive and kicking in Almada for several years, Casa da Cerca is always synonymous with a good cultural programme. Until 20th October, it hosts the exhibition “The ABC of Racist Europe”, the first from the Peruvian artist Daniela Ortiz in Portugal. An intelligent criticism of the colonial, patriarchal and capitalist power. Besides, this art-dedicated house always embraces current, pertinent and free of charge exhibitions, placing culture at the service of society. Activities for kids and families are also frequent and extremely rewarding. Visiting Almada without going to Casa da Cerca is like going to Rome and missing the Pope!

CASA DA CERCA It is the most famous contemporary art house of the Almada municipality, with exhibitions and activities that stand out, but it is worth a visit just for its surroundings! Casa da Cerca, located on top of a hill in the city’s historical centre and with enviable gardens, is one of the most escape-suitable places, with breathtaking views over the Tagus river and the capital. Even the proximity with the 25th April Bridge - generating a constant car hubbub - or the eventual presence of onlookers can’t take away from us the peace we feel in this place, where you can enjoy the cafeteria terrace (well worth it, by the way), visit a botanical garden or explore labyrinths that you can sit at and gaze into the infinity. May it never turn into a hotel!

P CAIS DO GINJAL The walkway between Cacilhas and the River Gardens is the perfect escape for those visiting the overly famous area next to the Lisbon ferries, or those arriving from Lisbon after another day at work. Ideal for those who like to stroll by the riverside without disconnecting from the urban inﬂuences - there are dozens of graﬃti along the wall accompanying the walk -, this is your leisure trashy moment. Try one of the famous restaurants with terraces almost on the river - Ponto Final and Atira-te ao Rio - and enjoy the end of the trail’s glory, in the River Gardens, where we have already spent hours thinking about nothing. TRAFARIA This small fishing town, with a peculiar history from a submerged riverfront, 18 million years ago, to the city’s most important port -, is Almada’s most picturesque residential area, though one of its sides is not appreciated by everyone: the industrial one. Despite being crowded, it is still the quietest place in the municipality, sought even by people from the other shore, for its fish and traditional food.

AVENTURE INTO THE BIODIVERSITY CIRCUIT The Peace Park Biodiversity Station is a 2-km circular pedestrian trail that takes you to meet the existing habitats and invites you to discover the abundant biological diversity. RENT A BIKE TOMA LÁ BICLAS, from the TOMA LÁ PAZ stand, is a service providing bicycles for riding alone (if you rent the small one) or with someone else (if you prefer the bigger one, with two saddles). It is a great way to get to know the entire park in less time and it may become a really romantic and/or fun journey, if you share it with your friend, better half or offspring. The stand has live music every Sunday, the perfect end to that ride. It’s easy to be happy.

CYCLE PATHS FOR THE ADVENTUROUS If you want to venture further, learn that you have a cycle path up to Almada Forum (1.2 km) and another one that takes you to Cacilhas (3.4 km). They start at the Centro-Sul entrance.

Almada: A secret in plain sight

by Marina Soares I was still a little girl, born and raised in the city of seven hills when I first began to hear about the “other side”. That was the name by which was known this side of the river Tagus, from where I’m writing now. The mysterious territory beyond the bridge, a no man’s land, or so I thought. I discovered I couldn’t be more wrong when we moved here. In a minute, I was living in the dreaded suburb of sleeping quarters, the stigmatized South Bank. ‘But was it that bad?’ You ask. It never was. But how to explain this to the “others”? The word Almada terrified Lisbon people. “Wow, how far away! What about the river, the bridge traﬃc, the toll, the weird neighborhoods, the graﬃti, the gangs? There is nothing out there, Lisbon is the place to be.” At some point, I gave up trying to share our quality of life and started to look at this city as some kind of secret. When the time came to choose a house and build a family, I had no doubts: ALMADA! My kids were born at Hospital Garcia de Orta. They go to public schools close to our house. They walk to the swimming lessons and to the gym club. They feel safe and happy in a neighborhood where everyone says “Good Morning”, and they still haven’t joined any gang... (I’m watching them just in case and I’m sure my front door neighbor is helping me!). We never lack what to do and crossing the river is (almost) only to go to work. This is my last attempt of explaining to the “others” why raising a family in Almada is so great. My Top 5. It’s just my two cents, but trust me: “Tá-se bem!*” The “Almadenses”: They are special people. As a teenager I knew them interventionists, concerned about the world, swarming with ideas. Musicians, poets, dancers, members of theater groups, presidents of socio-cultural associations, they were never quiet. Even me, who was not at all made like this, grazed much of it. It was impossible to grow up in Almada without ever going up in some kind of stage. And how fun the rehearsal nights at the Youth Houses (the famous “Ponto de Encontro” and that view of the Tagus!). We are not couch potatoes, and I like to think that the new generations still carry some of this uneasiness. My oldest daughter has already performed at “Incrível Almadense”. It’s a start...

Our backyard: That’s what we call Parque da Paz. We hang in there every other weekend. We run, we ride our bikes, have picnics, play a lot and even doze under the trees. On the last Sunday of each month, we fill our bags with vegetables and fruit from the Garden Market (page 16) and, sometimes, we return home empty-handed, because the fresh air and the exercise gives us an appetite... The culture that makes us great: The city’s business card and our greatest pride! Without dwelling (to learn more, page 10), here’s what we have: In June, the International Arts Show for the Children - “Sementes”, which is the responsibility of Teatro Extremo, delights my little ones. In July, the Almada Theater Festival - with increasing national and international expression. In September/ October, the unmissable “Quinzena de Dança de Almada” - International Dance Festival. For the rest of the year, we follow the schedule of the Joaquim Benite Municipal Theater (which we see from the window!), the Houses of Culture, the Municipal Libraries and the City Museum. There is always something happening and so much to do. Old things becoming new: In Almada, everything is stirring, everything is worth seeing again, because it’s so much better since last time. Cacilhas and Cova da Piedade, traditionally aged areas, are now in a revolution! Appealing commerce, new restaurants, markets, streets closed to traﬃc, terraces, and people on the street, living the city. And what about the party that spontaneously happens every friday evening at the kiosk Dá Cá Cilhas, just off the boats? Our sea: 13 km of beaches and I was going to leave them out? Whether it’s summer or winter, in the morning or at sunset, for a swim or grilled fish, we never spend much time away from the coast. And now we also have the Sol da Caparica Festival and the newly opened Atlantic Sports Park. The good part? We get no traﬃc on the bridge.

Well, this is a point that we believe needs to be reworked from scratch. With the economic crisis we witnessed between 2010 and 2014, the idea of saving gained a new relevance. More than twenty years ago, when I started visiting Almada, thanks to the summer holidays at the grandparents’ house, there was a certain charm in the way I looked at the city. Not because of the picturesque streets, but through the social life that I saw at the time. During college, the idea became more real. I made friends in Almada that showed a more independent spirit and a notion of culture and nightlife for someone living in the Setúbal region. It was the South Bay municipality that grew the faster, but if, for years, I have associated that growth mostly to the cultural life, I have been finding out that the love that the almadenses nurture for their city comes from a set of factors that make the city a more pleasant place to live: easy mobility and proximity to Lisbon; vast beaches, perfect for playing with the kids and watch the incredible sunset; a park that is the real lung and very active; and, more recently, the bet on contemporary restaurants, following the demands of the newer generations. The city hall has projects for the future, but there is mostly an entrepreneurial vision of the «now» adults that grew up in here. In general, they try to innovate in business, but on the basis of building bridges and taking advantage of the tranquillity offered by the city, when compared to the capital, constructing families with time to enjoy life. There’s room for all, including you.
