He is one of today’s most popular and esteemed actors, because Colin Firth embodies the type of the artist at its purest, constantly pursuing the absolute, who moves with the charms of a flawless gentleman more interested in substance than appearance. His acting career and his civil commitment, plus his multiple interests ranging from anthropology to science, are tangible proof of it. Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), A Single Man by Tom Ford (2009), The King’s Speech (2010), which won him the Academy Award for Best Actor, are movies that we all know by heart. In Italy, his popularity has further skyrocketed since he married Livia Giuggioli and moved to the Umbrian-Tuscan border, to Città della Pieve. The latest fruit of their exemplary relationship, indestructible even after the separation, are two films released in 2021, which were both shot in Florence by a brilliant Italian film director who lives in London, Giorgio Testi, a digital technology expert. We are talking about the short Chiusi Fuori film, which describes the wounds inflicted to the artistic and cultural world by the lockdown and in which Firth performed alongside Stefano Accorsi at La Pergola Theater thanks to the augmented reality system. The second film is The Renaissance Awards shot by using a similar technique to the backdrop of the Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Vecchio, where the Hampshire-born actor, along with Gisele Bundchen and Nile Rodgers, gave the first global awards promoted by Eco-Age, the sustainability consulting agency established and run by Livia, to international young leaders working for a more sustainable future. Both movies were produced by Pulse Films Italia.
Florence has been very present in your life this year. What impact does this city have on you every time you experience it in person?
I love Florence, my Italian side of the family is all from Tuscany and through the years I have visited it many times. I will always be grateful to Mayor Nardella for the beautiful experience he gave us when we had a private tour of Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi. It was unforgettaÈ uno degli attori più amati e stimati di oggi, perché Colin Firth incarna simultaneamente l’idea dell’artista allo stato puro, continuamente alla ricerca dell’assoluto, e quella dell’impeccabile gentleman più interessato a essere che ad apparire. La sua carriera di attore e il suo impegno civile nutrito di interessi che vanno dall’antropologia alla scienza ne sono il segno più tangibile. Il diario di Bridget Jones (2001), A single man di Tom Ford (2009), Il discorso del re (2010) che gli valse l’Oscar come miglior attore, sono pellicole che tutti conosciamo a memoria. In Italia, alla sua popolarità si è aggiunta anche la simpatia confidenziale suscitata dal suo matrimonio con Livia Giuggioli vissuto in parte sul confine tra Umbria e Toscana, a Città della Pieve. L’ultimo frutto della loro intesa esemplare, inossidabile anche dopo la separazione, sono due pellicole uscite nel 2021 che hanno in comune lo sfondo di Firenze e un geniale regista italiano che vive a Londra, Giorgio Testi esperto di tecnologie digitali. Parliamo del cortometraggio Chiusi Fuori che racconta le ferite provocate dal lockdown al mondo della cultura e del teatro, nel quale Firth grazie alla realtà aumentata compare al fianco di Stefano Accorsi al Teatro della Pergola. L’altro, è il film The Renaissance Awards girato con una tecnica analoga sullo sfondo della Galleria degli Uffizi e di Palazzo Vecchio, nel quale l’attore originario degli Hampshire, insieme a Gisele Bundchen e Nile Rodgers, consegnano ai giovani leader mondiali nel campo della sostenibilità il premio omonimo indetto per la prima volta da Eco-Age, la società di consulenza sulla sostenibilità fondata e diretta da Livia. Entrambe le pellicole sono state prodotte dalla Pulse Films Italia.
Firenze è stata molto presente nella sua vita quest’anno. Che impatto ha questa città su di lei ogni volta che la vive di persona?
Amo Firenze, la parte italiana della famiglia è tutta toscana e negli anni l’ho visitata molte volte. Sarò sempre grato al sindaco Nardella per la bellissima esperienza che ci ha regalato quando abbiamo fatto un tour privato di Palazzo Vecchio e degli Uffizi. E’ stato indimenticabile. I due progetti

The two projects you mention were shot virtually, as I was not actually at La Pergola or the Uffizi, but thanks to director Giorgio Testi, who catapulted me virtually there, the experience was magical nevertheless. And it helped that I knew both locations pretty well so I could channel the air, let’s say!
How do you see the future of filmmaking after the pandemic?
The pandemic has been detrimental to the artistic and cultural world. It forced thousands of people out of work, to obvious negative consequences on salaries and productions. But it has also opened creativity in a totally unexpected way, giving us the opportunity to think outside the box and use technology to serve storytelling. These two projects are the proof of what can be done and in the future we can work increasingly in ways that help also us actors, for instance, not to have to fly around constantly. We can attend events from wherever we are. I was able to be present in the Renaissance Awards movie regardless of the fact that I was on set in Atlanta. If it had happened pre pandemic, I would probably have had to say no.
Was it hard to deal with the new technologies used by Giorgio Testi?
I love working with Giorgio. He has a formidable way of using technology at the service of storytelling in a very natural way.
And what was it like working with Stefano Accorsi?
Stefano acted a bit like a bridge with Giorgio. We had been talking with Stefano about doing something for La Pergola Theater and everything came together incredibly easy. Stefano and I could speak for hours (never put two actors together!) and thank God we had Giorgio to keep us in check.
The Renaissance Awards brought together artists, digital technologies and young activists committed to sustainability sending a strong message from Florence into the world. How do you see this new Renaissance?
Passing the microphone to young activists is one of the most important things that we can do right now, and to do that from the cradle of the first Renaissance is particularly symbolic. This is not us giving our blessing, it is our recognition that young activists are the driving force of empowerment. We owe them a debt and heavy recognition. di cui stiamo parlando sono stati girati virtualmente, dato che non ero realmente alla Pergola o agli Uffizi, ma grazie a Giorgio Testi che mi ha catapultato virtualmente lì, l’esperienza è stata comunque magica. Mi ha aiutato anche il fatto che conoscevo entrambe le location abbastanza bene, così ho potuto respirarne l’aria, diciamo.
Come vede il futuro del cinema dopo la pandemia?
La pandemia è stata deleteria per il mondo artistico e culturale. Ha costretto migliaia di persone a lasciare il lavoro, con ovvie conseguenze negative su stipendi e produzioni. Ma ha anche aperto la creatività in modo totalmente inaspettato, dandoci l’opportunità di pensare fuori dagli schemi e di usare la tecnologia al servizio della narrazione. Questi due progetti sono la prova di quello che si può fare e della possibilità di lavorare con metodi che aiutino anche noi attori, per esempio, a non dover volare costantemente da un capo all’altro del mondo. Possiamo partecipare agli eventi da qualunque posto ci troviamo. Sono stato in grado di essere presente nel film The Renaissance Awards indipendentemente dal fatto che in quel momento stessi girando ad Atlanta (per la serie HBO The Staircase, ndr.). Se ciò fosse accaduto prima della pandemia forse avrei dovuto dire di no.
È stata dura affrontare le nuove tecnologie messe in campo da Giorgio Testi?
Adoro lavorare con Giorgio, ha un modo formidabile di usare la tecnologia al servizio della narrazione in modo molto naturale.
E com’è stato lavorare con Stefano Accorsi?
Il ponte con Stefano è stato un po’ Giorgio. Abbiamo parlato insieme di fare qualcosa per il Teatro della Pergola e tutto è stato incredibilmente facile. Io e Stefano potevamo parlare per ore (mai mettere due attori insieme!) ma grazie a Dio avevamo Giorgio a tenerci sotto controllo.
The Renaissance Awards ha riunito artisti, tecnologie digitali e giovani attivisti impegnati nella sostenibilità inviando un forte messaggio da Firenze nel mondo. Come vede questo nuovo Rinascimento?
Dare il microfono ai giovani attivisti è una delle cose più importanti che possiamo fare in questo momento, e farlo dalla culla del primo Rinascimento è particolarmente simbolico. Questo non significa dare loro la nostra benedizione, ma riconoscere che i giovani attivisti sono la forza trainante dell’empowerment. Abbiamo un debito e un pesante riconoscimento nei loro confronti.
