Visarno Arena
One of Italy’s most loved rock festivals is back at the Visarno Arena from 17 to 18 June 2023. Since its launch in 2017 it has a racted more than 530,000 visitors, and brought countless Italian and international artists to the stage of one of the world’s most beautiful cities. This year’s lineup includes Maroon 5 and The Who with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra.
Florence’s patron San Giovanni is usually celebrated on 24 June with a traditional procession, the calcio storico finals and a firework display that lights up the whole city. Once upon a time, there was also the Palio dei Cocchi, a horse-drawn chariot race held in Piazza Santa Maria Novella on the eve of the saint’s day.
CALCIO STORICO FIORENTINO

Piazza Santa Croce
Born right here in Florence in the 15th century, this combination of football, rugby and wrestling is played nowadays in historical costume. The four teams, from the four historical quarters of the city, are Santa Croce (blue), Santo Spirito (white), Santa Maria Novella (red) and San Giovanni (green). They play each other in two semi-finals and a final to determine the winner. Piazza Santa Croce, in front of the Santa Croce church, has always been the venue for the game, also known as Giuoco del Calcio Fiorentino, or simply Calcio.

May is the month of the Italy’s oldest Festival: a season of opera and orchestra with a busy calendar of classical music and opera. On the programme are Mozart’s Don Giovanni conducted by Zubin Mehtara from 30 April to 12 May, and Verdi’s Otello from 20 May to 3 June, also conducted by Zubin Mehta and directed by Valerio Binasco.

Do not miss out on the bassoon concert by Francesco Bossone on Sunday 14 and Monday 15 May, the concert of pianist Massimo Spada with the Elleboros Quartet on Thursday 18 May and Francesco Manara’s violin concert on the two evenings of Sunday 28 and Monday 29 May.
