In addition to the Cathedral itself, the Complex includes the Cantieri (restoration sites), the Duomo Museum, the Archive and Library and the Music Chapel. Guided tours of the Complex and the spires and roof walk are restarting until July, with special formats. A fascinating option, again until July, is the special Dante in Duomo initiative: at 18:30 from Monday to Friday until 9 July the whole of the Divine Comedy will be read near the main altar, thanks to a project by Massimiliano Finazzer Flory. “We invite all Milan and Lombardy citizens to visit the Duomo. “In the course of the coming months”, we’re told by

ums, “the Last Supper complex will undergo new and significant work”. From this autumn, a new lighting system will make the visitor experience even more engaging. But the refectory is not only about Leonardo: opposite the Last Supper hangs Donato da Montorfano’s Crucifixion. September will see the start of the restoration of the fresco, allowing the public to watch the work in progress. Access to the museum is still limited, but far from being a restriction, this makes the visit truly unique.

refurbishment of the two storeys of the Arengario palace devoted to Italian art from the 1920s to the 50s, is a real surprise. The journey begins with the Italian art scene of the twenties and thirties, punctuated by a solo show of Giorgio Morandi’s work. After rooms dedicated to Marino Marini and a large space displaying works by Lucio Fontana, the new itinerary continues in the long hall on the fifth floor with the postwar period, including rooms featuring Manzoni and Burri. “Starting with the idea that a museum is an endless narrative, vastly different stories can be told through artworks and collections” says Anna Maria Montaldo, director
A single vast monument complex consisting of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Brunelleschi’s Dome, Giotto’s Campanile, the Baptistery of St John, Santa Reparata and the Opera del Duomo Museum. It’s difficult to rank them, in such a crescendo of beauty. Following the celebrations for the 600th anniversary of the start of work on the Dome (in August 1420), the symbol of the city has something of the lion’s share within the complex, and the ascent from the terraces to the inside of the lantern is an ever-fresh thrill, with views over the entire city. “A lot of people are surprised at the austere interior”, explains Monsignor Timothy Ver-

re, “until they look up and see the wonder of Brunelleschi’s dome with its frescoes, which take us from hell to paradise”.
Uffizi Galleries
The Florentine gallery loved by the whole world has reopened, with 14 new rooms and 129 previously unseen works of art. 2,000 square metres, recently refurbished and dedicated to 16th-century painting in Florence, Emilia and Rome: the new spaces house masterpieces by great painters like Daniele da Volterra, Rosso Fiorentino and Bartolomeo Passerotti. What’s more, the 14th room is a preview of the spaces which will soon contain self-portraits by artists such as Bernini, Cigoli, Chagall and Guttuso.

Il percorso inizia con gli scenari artistici degli anni Venti e Trenta in Italia, interrotta da una monografica dedicata a Giorgio Morandi. Difficile stabilire delle priorità in un tale crescendo di Bellezza. All’indomani dei festeggiamenti dei 600 anni dall’inizio della costruzione della Cupola (era l’agosto del 1420), il simbolo della città fa un po’ la parte del leone all’interno del complesso e la salita dalle terrazze all’interno fino alla lanterna è sempre una nuova emozione, con lo sguardo che si allunga su tutta la città. “Molte persone rimangono spiazzate dalla sobrietà dell’interno - ci spiega monsignor Timothy Verdon, direttore dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore - fin quando non alzano gli occhi a quella meraviglia che è la cupola del Brunelleschi con i suoi affreschi, che dall’Inferno ci conducono fino al Paradiso”.
