ANNUAL REPORT Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council

OUR MISSION Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

GIRL SCOUT PROMISE On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

GIRL SCOUT LAW I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

“The work of today is the history of tomorrow, and we are the makers.” Dear Friends, These words from Juliette Gordon Low, who founded Girl Scouts 108 years ago, are just as relevant and vital today. As the world grows more complicated and uncertain, we need girls to unleash their untapped powers and lead us towards the solutions of the future. In Girl Scouting, girls and young women have a space just for them and the resources to grow stronger both individually and together. Girls have the opportunity for discovery, exploration, and enjoyment, where failure is seen as a step towards success. Girls learn the skills that matter most – not only technical ability and knowledge but essential social and interpersonal skills. And girls are encouraged to stand tall, speak out, turn their ideas into action and become the leaders of today and tomorrow. Whether you are a parent, guardian, adult volunteer, alumnae, or donor, thank you for your continued support as together, we champion girls’ dreams and ambitions, leading us to a better world for everyone. Love,

Teri Kelley

Girl Scouts champions female ambition. We offer a girl-led, girl-focused program in the safe space of an all-girl environment – made possible by caring adults. Girls power everything in our world. Volunteers and staff support them as they step confidently into the unknown to discover their world, make meaningful connections, and create positive change.

GIRL SCOUTS–ARIZONA CACTUS-PINE COUNCIL

Troop 1989 earned their Girl Scout Silver Award by helping ICAN: Positive Programs for Youth enhance their afterschool educational programs. They decided to provide fun and easy ways for kids to practice reading and math skills. The girls put together crates full of learning games for grades K-4 as well as strategy games for older kids. They also organized community drives and received over 380 donations of art supplies and sports equipment items to support the afterschool activities.

The members of Troop 3632 have all been recognized for their leadership by each of their three different schools! Whether named student body President, Vice President, or Treasurer, all the girls committed to leading their schools like Girl Scouts.

ambitions for LEADERSHIP

To earn their Girl Scout Bronze Award, girls in Troop 6010 found a way to up-cycle plastic grocery bags in a way that would help their community while lessening the impact on the environment. Over ten months of work, the girls collected plastic grocery bags, learned how to crochet, and crocheted mats out of the plastic bags, which they then donated to people who are homeless in Arizona.

ambitions for LEADERSHIP

GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo visited Phoenix to bolster awareness of Girl Scouting in the community and to meet some of our dedicated supporters and community leaders. She met and interviewed with local Spanish language media, talked with some of our Council’s volunteers at a special reception, and discussed ideas with GSACPC board members and local Latina community leaders.

A total of 84 girls earned the new Space Science Badge at our Council’s first program for the badge after it was introduced in July 2019. At Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, the girls met with a female astronomer, learned about famous women astronomers, and explored the observatory (and space!).

2019 ANNUAL REPORT | CHAMPION FEMALE AMBITION

ambitions of DISCOVERY

Twenty-nine high school Girl Scouts participated in the fourth annual Aspire Academy at the Mesa Public Safety Training Facility. Aspire Academy is hands-on learning – an intense and adrenalinepumping firefighting and law enforcement training hosted by more than 150 volunteers from 30 agencies. During this four-day experience, academy participants learned about frontline professions and operations while working side-by-side with women professionals in the field.

7

ambitions to CONNECT WITH OTHERS

In celebration of Women’s History Month in March, South Phoenix Girl Scouts held a girl-led event with partners Tiger Mountain Foundation and Valley of the Sun United Way at the Garden of Tomorrow, just minutes away from our Parsons Leadership Center. Girl Scouts tended the garden with many members of the local community, including residents of the Tanner Gardens Senior Living facility.

8

Troop 4496 went on an encampment and did tons of fun camp activities like ziplining and cooking outdoors. The mother of one of the troop members, who lives with Downs Syndrome, thanked the girls and leaders for accepting her daughter Vanessa (pictured third from left) with open arms and hearts! “Nothing extraordinary happened, which makes this great. Vanessa had a typical camp experience with her friends. That's inclusion.”

Troop 997 had the opportunity to meet three inspiring women who worked in factories during WWII. The special visitors shared their stories about the hard work done by women in industries previously closed to them and answered the girls’ questions during their visit. They all wore t-shirts celebrating Rosie the Riveter – the star of a campaign aimed at recruiting female workers for defense industries during the war, and who became the most iconic image of working women.

GIRL SCOUTS–ARIZONA CACTUS-PINE COUNCIL

Troop 3747 completed the Wonders of Water Journey through a water conservation project. The girls created the “Toilet Tank Water Saver” using recycled bottles, which saves five gallons of water per flush. They placed them in 88 toilet tanks –so, by our estimation (using the 6-flush-a-day average for Americans), this project is saving at least 963,600 gallons of water a year!

Through our efforts to pass School Access Bill SB1099 in 2019, many of our Girl Scouts learned about the legislative process, becoming more civically engaged, and the vital lesson of trying again when we fail. Girls participated in “GS Day at the Capitol,” met with their legislators, and attended and testified in committee hearings about supporting the bill. They believe in this relevant legislation–which would improve the lives of all Arizona students by allowing the handful of patriotic youth-serving organizations, like Girl Scouts, the ability to speak with and recruit students at schools–that many of them agreed to support the second attempt to pass a bill in 2020. 2019 ANNUAL REPORT | CHAMPION FEMALE AMBITION

ambitions for TAKING ACTION

Independent Girl Member (IGM) Kylee was asked to assist with the Navajo National Monument’s (U.S. National Park Service) cultural garden project. She accepted, learned about the Ancestral Puebloan community, and helped plant food they had farmed during their occupation of the area. Kylee became passionate about her role and watered the garden throughout the summer.
