Am I Ready for Overnight Camp?

troop & family

We are so appreciative when families and girls ask this question. We share your desire to find the best camp experiences possible, and for this reason, we offer a rich progression of sessions. You can choose from a variety of options – from day camp or day camp with overnight options, to shorter mini sessions, weekend sessions with family or troops, or traditional, week-long and multi-week overnight sessions.

3 DAYS, 2 NIGHTS Get a feel for overnight camp with your friends or family by your side.

3-Day overnight

Girl Scout Camp has something for every level of readiness!

3 DAYS, 2 NIGHTS

Although age plays a big role in determining a camper’s readiness for overnight/resident camp, maturity and openness to a new adventure are also important. We suggest reviewing and discussing the following list of skills and abilities to decide what is best.

Experience camp on your own or with a buddy! Sleep in cabins with 3-5 other second and third graders.

4-day overnight 4 DAYS, 3 NIGHTS Sample all the special programs and activities at camp. Sleep in cabin or tents (if specified) with 5-9 other girls similar in age.

6-day overnight 6 DAYS, 5 NIGHTS Experience camp on your own! Sleep in cabin or tents (if specified) with 5-9 other girls similar in age.

8-DAY TRIP & TRAVEL 8 DAYS, 7 NIGHTS For girls grades 9-12, who want to experience camp AND hit the road for the next level of outdoor camping adventure!

leadership 6-24 DAYS/NIGHTS varies by program Help lead activities for younger girls and groups at camp. These programs help develop skills and experience needed to be a camp counselor.

DžDž I can ask for help when needed. DžDž I can follow directions in a group setting. DžDž I’m excited to make new friends. DžDž I’m comfortable being outdoors in nature. DžDž I have been away from home overnight. DžDž I can take a shower and brush my teeth by myself. DžDž I’m good at keeping track of my personal belongings. DžDž I’m good at using my camp equipment (i.e., water bottle, mess kit, sunscreen, etc.) If you and your camper decide she's not ready for a full week of resident camp, consider the day camp options at The Parsons Leadership Center, the Brownie mini-sessions (3 days/2 nights) at Shadow Rim Ranch, Big Sis/Lil Sis sessions (attend with an older buddy) or Family Camp weekends offered at all our camps.

Not a Girl Scout? Not a problem! All campers are welcome to discover their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk taker, and Leader)™ at camp! We simply add a $35 Girl Scout membership fee to your camp session. For more information about year-round Girl Scout opportunities, contact reghelp@girlscoutsaz.org. Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC) values diversity and inclusiveness. We will not deny access to girls, volunteers, or staff, based on race, ethnicity, creed, national origin, socioeconomic status, disability, gender identity or sexual orientation.

Tiered Pricing We are proud to continue to offer the Girl Scout Camp experience at an affordable price, significantly below the industry average. This is possible because a portion of the Council proceeds from the cookie program help to underwrite the costs of camp. In addition, many families choose to pay the rate reflecting the true cost of the camp session. We offer a three-tiered pricing structure to provide families the opportunity to take an active role in creating sustainable camps for girls now and in the future. Each family chooses the pricing tier most appropriate to their needs. Every camper will receive the same high-quality programming you’ve come to expect from Girl Scouts, regardless of pricing tier selected.

»» Tier 1 – This rate reflects our historically low rate, made possible by grants, donations and the cookie program. »» Tier 2 – This rate helps sustain camp and falls about halfway between the Tier 1 rate and the full cost of the camp session. »» Tier 3 – This rate most closely reflects the true cost per-camper including relative costs for program supplies, insurance, facilities upkeep, food and camp staff salaries.

For each session description in this brochure, three prices are listed representing the following tiered levels:

What would you do if you could spend a day with Chepi— the magical bird that lives at Maripai? I would love to go flying with her around Camp Maripai, so I could see what she sees when girls arrive at summer camp.

2

What would you do if you could spend a day with Charlie Chuckwalla—the magical lizard that lives at Parsons? Charlie would be my guide to all things desert survival. I’m sure he has lots to share, such as which rocks are warmest for sunbathing in the morning, the best places to keep cool midday, and how to get along with javelina-neighbors.

Discounts

Badges & Patches

Refer-a-Friend Discount: When a non-Girl Scout friend registers for camp, you’ll receive a $25 discount on your registration for one session of camp. The discount will be applied once both campers are registered for a session.

While campers will earn a patch or badge at camp, this isn’t the primary focus of our camping program. We provide a safe, supportive, challenging and adventurous environment where campers will learn more about themselves (Discover), one another (Connect), and how to help their community (Take Action). Many sessions will include completing some badge requirements, and we encourage campers to finish what they started when they return home.

Multi-Session Discount: Register for one camp session (five days or longer) and receive a $50 discount on a second session (five days or longer) at any camp. This discount may be used one time per camper, per summer.

Camperships We want to ensure that everyone who wants to attend camp can do so, regardless of financial situation. If you believe paying for camp would be a financial hardship, please apply for a campership at bit.ly/gsaz-campership. »» Camperships are not guaranteed for full amount and will not exceed $500. »» One time use per camper per summer. »» Recipients will be notified after cookie incentives are released, at the beginning of April. »» Campers applying for camperships must register for a camp session and pay the non-refundable 10% deposit before submitting the financial assistance application.

At our northern camps, look for Brownie Adventure, Junior Experience, Cadette Explorer, and Camp it Up sessions. Campers will have the opportunity to sample all the special programs and activities at camp and choose which activities to return to during unscheduled blocks. Discover Camp! sessions are great for first-time campers—and are open to everyone!

Leadership Programs Girls take the lead in these programs! Our older campers are encouraged to explore camp life from a unit or program counselor perspective while gaining valuable skills for working with their peers, teammates and younger campers.

Our Trading Posts offer a chance for girls to purchase a souvenir or a snack. You may place money on a camper’s Trading Post (store) account during the registration process, at the bus/van stops, or at each camp during check-in. You can also add money up to one week before the session start date, by contacting the GSACPC Customer Care team. Be mindful of the amount chosen each session because Trading Post monies: »» Can only be utilized for the session at that particular camp »» Do not transfer to other camp’s stores »» Are non-refundable (in whole or part) Any money remaining in the account when the session is complete will be donated to the Wood Fairy Fund. The Wood Fairy Fund provides campers, who may not have money for a store account, a chance to buy one small treat during their camp session.

Transportation Find bus and van pick-up locations, safety procedures and chaperone information at girlscoutsaz.org/camp-bus. All bus locations are subject to change, please refer to the website.

NORTHERN CAMPS Campers have two transportation options: 1. Campers may be driven to camp OR 2. Register for bus transportation from and to the Phoenix metropolitan area. Bus transportation is $30 one-way or $60 round-trip for our camps in Prescott and Payson. Riding the bus gives girls an opportunity to meet other girls before they arrive at camp. It also helps use resources wisely, reduces congestion at the camps as well as wear and tear on the camp properties. Buses are equipped with air conditioning, bathrooms, and are supervised by bus chaperones.

PARSONS LEADERSHIP CENTER Campers have two transportation options: 1. Campers may be dropped off at camp OR 2. Register for van transportation from one of three Valley locations. The van fee is $50 per week round-trip and is non-refundable. One-way trips are not available.

51

Still Not Sure About Girl Scout Camp?!?! Must my camper be a Girl Scout to attend camp? No! All girls are welcome to attend Girl Scout Camp. Campers not currently registered as Girl Scout members will simply have the $35 membership fee added to their camp registration. The Girl Scout membership will carry through the entire next membership year. This means campers are eligible to participate in any Girl Scout activity they’d like through September 2020 without paying additional member fees!

Is financial aid available? Camperships are available and are awarded based on financial need. Please register for a camp session and pay the deposit prior to applying for financial aid. Award letters are processed after cookie program incentives are awarded, around the beginning of April. Campership forms are available at bit.ly/gsaz-campership.

Can my camper be in the same unit as her friend or sister? A camper may request ONE “buddy” when registering for camp. Both campers must register for the same program or session at the same camp. Make sure your camper and her buddy (and parent/guardian) are planning this together.

What is the process for Counselor in Training 3 (CIT 3)? If you have completed CIT 1 and CIT 2, then you may be ready for CIT 3. You must complete an online application and interview with the Camp Director for approval before paying for the session. If you apply for consecutive weeks, you may be required to go home on the weekends, depending on weekend camp activities and at each Camp Director’s discretion. This process also applies to Barn Instructor in Training (BIT) 3 at Camp Maripai.

Can my troop sign up to be together and be in the same cabin or unit? We have summer sessions available for troops and groups. During our non-troop or group camp sessions, multiple buddy requests cannot be accommodated.

What is the waitlist process? When a camper is on the waitlist, no payment is required. When a spot becomes available, an email will be sent to register and pay for the session. There is a registration deadline when a spot opens. If registration does not occur within the specified timeframe, the spot will be released to another camper.

52

Can my camper bring her cell phone to camp? Please DO NOT send phones, tablets, iPods or other electronic devices to camp with your camper. Camp is an opportunity for campers to “unplug” and connect with themselves, their new friends and nature. Any electronic devices found will be placed in the camp office until the end of the camper’s session. Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council is not responsible for any missing or damaged personal items.

Do you permit visitors to camp? Visitors are not permitted on site while camp is in session. Each camp property hosts an Open House where guests can tour camp, speak with the Camp Director and meet the camp staff.

How can I stay in touch with my camper while they are at camp? Your camper would LOVE to get mail while at camp! Send packages and letters before their camp sessions. You may also drop packages and letters in-person at the check-in tables at the bus drop-off or camp, to be distributed throughout the week. Please clearly label all items with the camper’s name and session name.

Can I call the camp to check on my camper? Of course! If you have any questions, concerns or need reassurance that your camper is doing well, call the camp office or email the camp director. Conversely, we will reach out to you in the event we need to provide extra support for your camper due to homesickness, illness, behavior or (in rare cases) serious injury.

What happens if my camper needs medical attention while at camp? A Health Supervisor is on site at each camp and oversees the routine health care and administration of medications for all campers and staff. A doctor is on call if illness or injury requires additional medical attention. Parent/guardians will be notified in the event of an emergency.

What if my camper needs special accommodations (including dietary needs)? We are committed to ensuring that all campers have a positive camp experience. If your camper needs additional support to be successful, please contact the Camp Director, who will work with you to provide appropriate support. This includes, but is not limited to, dietary needs, allergies, specific health care needs and mobility limitations.

Be Prepared at Camp...

Bring a camp kit! Camp Kits are available for purchase when registering for camp and are a great way to make sure campers have what they need for their sessions! Kits will be mailed directly to campers at home before their camp session. If the order is placed within two weeks of the camp session, the kit will be sent to camp for them! Campers attending multiple camp sessions will only need one camp kit.
