The Communal Experiment

As a resident of the Libre Commune in Southern Colorado’s Huerfano Valley, Roberta Price was a participant in a communal Back-to-the-Land lifestyle experiment. She documented the experience in images, offering a rare perspective into the dynamics between pursuing individual freedom and sharing collective property. She is the author of Huerfano: A Memoir of Life in the Counterculture (U. Mass. Press 2004) and Across the Great Divide: A Photo Chronicle of the Counterculture (University of New Mexico Press 2010), both of which include some of the 3,000 images from her photographic archive to be acquired by the Beinecke Library at Yale University. Although much of her time now is spent on writing and photography, she has also worked as a law school professor and an intellectual property lawyer for over 25 years, attempting to reconcile artistic expression with legal code and policy. Here, she shares her images and descriptions of life on the Libre Commune.
