27th Annual Leading Women Awards
Dear friends: Welcome to the 27th annual Leading Women Awards. We are honored to be celebrating female leadership with you this morning. For the first time ever, we will be hosting a fireside chat, when you will hear from this year’s Leading Women, who are exceptional leaders Tricia Tilford in their fields, and Girl Scouts who Board Chair and President stand as role models for girls and young women everywhere. They will discuss the challenges that women face today, and how to embrace courage, confidence, and character to overcome these trials. Now more than ever, it is important for girls and women to find their voice. In Girl Scouts, the preeminent female leadership development organization, girls are able to do just that. While they’re advocating for change in their community, programming robots, or attending overnight camp for the first time, they’re developing the courage to speak out, expanding their minds to learn new skills, and believing in themselves to explore and impact the world around them. On behalf of our 30,000 girls, their families, and our 15,000 volunteers, we thank you for your support of the Leading Women Awards. Your generosity allows Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts to provide the supportive space for every girl to empower herself and reach her full potential. Yours in Girl Scouting,
Tricia Tilford Board Chair and President

EVENT EMCEE Nicole Estaphan Reporter and Producer, WCVB Channel 5’s Chronicle Award-winning journalist Nicole Estaphan is a reporter and producer for WCVB Channel 5’s Chronicle, the nation’s longest running and top rated locally produced news magazine which airs weeknights on WCVB at 7:30 PM. Nicole joined WCVB NewsCenter 5 in January of 2016 as a freelance news reporter. Before joining WCVB, Nicole reported in Utica, New York; Burlington, Vermont; Providence, Rhode Island; and most recently Atlanta, Georgia at WAGA-TV FOX 5. During her time in the south, she conducted the last televised interview with poet Maya Angelou. Her work also included Georgia-based reporting for “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.” While in Georgia, Nicole received state recognition for her series of reports on a toxic neighborhood with a legacy of military waste dumping. The chemicals left behind were thought to be the cause of a cancer cluster. Though the military never admitted fault, Nicole’s reporting led to immediate mitigation. While at WCVB, Nicole also spent some time over the last two years working on NASA’s North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES) documentary project, including shooting two full months in the North Atlantic. It was the first time a journalist was embedded for that length of time with a NASA mission at sea. She’s also done producing for The Discovery Channel. In addition to her charity work serving as event emcee for The Muscular Dystrophy Association, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The National Brain Tumor Society, and Girls, Inc., she volunteers at a dog rescue shelter in Dedham, MA. Without a doubt, and above all else, Nicole believes that sharing our stories can be life changing. Of all her work, encouraging younger generations is of utmost importance to her. She is currently working on a program with the Children’s Smile Coalition, to help kids living in poverty find their voice and confidence through public speaking. Nicole graduated from Emerson College in Boston with a master’s degree in journalism. In her spare time, it is a safe bet that you can find her on the water or in the pottery studio.

27th Annual Leading Women Awards
2019 Girl Scout Participants Kayla Martin Senior Girl Scout My name is Kayla Martin. I am 14 years old and in 9th grade at Cathedral High School. I have been a member of Dorchester Troop 55302 for the last seven years. I am also a part of a women’s leadership group at the Freedom House in Dorchester, and a nonprofit track team called the Boston Lions. Girls Scouts has opened many opportunities and experiences for me, such as traveling and meeting new people. Girl Scouts has taught me how to be a leader and believe in myself. It also taught me skills on how to manage money, do business, and carry myself. My favorite experience in Girl Scouts was when I opened the Becoming Michelle Obama book tour at the TD Garden. I was excited and nervous at the same time but I still stood on stage and spoke with confidence to more than 20,000 people. I was able to do this because I learned through Girl Scouts to push past my fears. I am grateful that I am a part of the Girl Scout family. It will always be part of me in whatever I do.
Madison Schofield Ambassador Girl Scout My name is Madison Schofield and I am a member of Girl Scout Troop 74951 and Millis Girl Scout Adventure Troop 62525. I have participated in competitive camp skill competitions such as T.R.E.C. (Teens Reaching Extraordinary Challenges) and Operation Snowflake, a winter camp competition. Through these competitions I have learned knot tying, sewing, and, my favorite, fire building. With my troop I have traveled to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace in Savannah, GA, backpacked the White Mountains, participated in the annual West Point Military Academy Camporee Invitational in New York, and much more. I have been to many Girl Scout camps, and especially love Camp Favorite in Brewster. It is my home away from home! I have completed counselor training and hope to be a staff member one day. I have earned the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. To earn the Gold Award, I developed a buddy mentoring program between the local elementary and high school to help students build confidence and social skills. I am graduating from Millis High School in June, and plan to attend George Mason University, majoring in communications and journalism.

2019 Girl Scout Participants Amiya Subramanian Ambassador Girl Scout My name is Amiya Subramanian, and I am a senior at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. I am currently part of three Girl Scout circles: my troop, the GSEMA Teen Leadership Committee, and the GSEMA Board of Directors. Girl Scouts provided me with the opportunity to discover my hidden interest in leadership. As a member of the GSEMA Teen Leadership Committee, I started to form my voice through planning the animal advocacy event and attending leadership conferences. To earn the Gold Award, I created STEM-themed leadership workshops for girls with the hope of building prospective female leaders in the STEM field. The workshops included team-building and individual activities that evoked the greater need to end the leadership ambition gap. My greater involvement in Girl Scouts led me to apply and join the GSEMA Board of Directors. From girl board buddy sessions to intricate BOD agendas, being a board member gave me insight into the issues that face GSEMA and the next steps we must take to improve our council. I will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology where I have plans of studying computer engineering, and incorporating my Girl Scout experiences into everything I do.
Kara Young Ambassador Girl Scout My name is Kara James Young. I attend Wareham High School in the afternoon and in the mornings I take part-time classes at Bridgewater State University. I’m currently a member of three Girl Scout troops: my town’s local troop, a camping interest troop, and a travel troop. In Girl Scouts I have learned practical skills such as building a safe campfire and learning to overcome my fears, and have fun while doing so. Camping is my favorite part of Girl Scouts. My camping troop plans to go to Acadia National Park this summer, and we’re talking about going backcountry camping for our final five-day trip in 2020. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of the GSEMA travel troop for five years. We’ve been to San Francisco, the Grand Canyon, and Las Vegas. Last semester I took an American Sign Language (ASL) course and fell in love with the beautiful language and rich culture. To earn the Gold Award, I’d like to create an ASL club at my local library and teach police officers how to properly communicate with members of the Deaf community. I now have plans to attend Bristol Community College to learn more of the language and then transfer to Framingham State University’s Bachelor of Arts interpreting program.
