MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR AND CEO Dear Girl Scouts: The Gold Award has been a shining example of girls' exemplary leadership for over 100 years! Gold Award recipients, you should proudly wear your Gold Award pin close to your heart, because you used your heart to fuel your success. Your passion, drive, persistence, and commitment to make the world a better place have taken you this far in your life. It is your DNA as a Girl Scout. And we know that you have many more accomplishments to come. Earning the Gold Award is not an easy feat. It is the result of working over 80 hours planning and implementing a sustainable service project. You have the foresight to see a solution to a social issue facing your community and the determination to put that solution to work. Your projects have had and will continue to have a positive impact on your communities for years to come. Talk to any Gold Award earner and she will tell you about what she learned and how she made a difference, but she will also tell you about the obstacles she encountered while going Gold. Despite those challenges, she persevered, problem-solved, and discovered innovative ways to overcome any hurdle. Gold Award Girl Scouts don't stop. That is why they are tomorrow's leaders. Today, 51 extraordinary young women highlighted in this award yearbook have demonstrated leadership, exceptional organizational skills, and the drive to complete a difficult task. They have made a measurable impact on their communities and the world by completing projects that address issues like education, hunger, and beyond! The journey to earning the Gold Award starts at an early age for Girl Scouts, with the encouragement of their leaders and parents. An important step in the progression is earning the Bronze Award (Juniors) and Silver Award (Cadettes), which gives girls opportunities to assemble a team and put a plan into action. From October 2015 to April 15, 2017, nearly 900 Girl Scouts have earned their Bronze Award and over 400 Girl Scouts have earned their Silver Award. Girls are changing the world! GIRL SCOUTS TAKING THE LEAD FOR OVER A CENTURY!
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Nancy Heinschel, Ph.D Applied Research Mathematician National Security Agency (NSA) Nancy Heinschel grew up in California, where she was active in Girl Scouts for twelve years in the San Francisco Bay Girl Scout Council (now Girl Scouts of Northern California). As she advanced from Brownie to Senior, camping, crafting and earning badges helped to build her leadership, organizational, and social skills. Ultimately she earned the Gold Award as a member of troop 1385. Following her years in Scouting, Nancy attended the University of California, Davis, earning a B.S. in Mathematics. She subsequently earned both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Nancy’s graduate education was supported in part by a fellowship from the National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC), which brought her to work for the National Security Agency (NSA) for two summers. Following graduate school, Nancy joined NSA full time as an Applied Research Mathematician. At NSA, Nancy has performed technical work, directed a summer college internship program, and currently leads a team of talented mathematicians and computer scientists. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, baking, and attending to the whims of her cat, Snoopy.
ABOUT THE GOLD AWARD
The Gold Award is Girl Scouts' highest honor. This prestigious award is earned by a select group of Girl Scouts who have demonstrated a higher commitment to improving their communities, and advocating for lasting change. This past year, from April 16, 2016 to April 15, 2017, 51 Girl Scouts from our 30 county footprint in central and northeastern Pennsylvania earned the Gold Award. The road to the Gold Award begins with discovery. Each girl uses her own values and skills to identify a community issue she is passionate about and then determines the topic and audience for her project. Before proceeding, each girl submits a project proposal to the Gold Award Committee. The Committee welcomes all projects for which there is a demonstrated need. The Committee works with Girl Scouts to support the development of their projects, and act as mentors, alongside each girl's Gold Award Advisor. While working on her project, each Girl Scout dedicates herself to advancing her cause and accomplishing her goal. All of the projects completed this year will have a lasting and positive impact on our region and beyond. From protecting the environment and teaching young people about community issues, to promoting healthy behaviors and helping those in need, these Girl Scouts have exhibited outstanding leadership, exceptional organizational skills, and a sincere commitment to improving their communities. Congratulations to all of our Gold Award Girl Scouts! The following pages feature this year’s (April 16, 2016- April 15, 2017) Gold Award Girl Scouts and descriptions of their projects. By necessity, the descriptions are brief and may not fully describe the scope of the project.

GOLD AWARD COMMIT TEE The Gold Award Committee is comprised of nine committee members who meet every two weeks to help guide girls through the Gold Award process. The Gold Award Committee reviews proposals and provides constructive feedback to potential Gold Award girls. The Gold Award Committee members are essential to girls earning the Gold Award through Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania.

Picnic Woods Makeover
Kristin placed two benches at the playgrounds of elementary schools to create a feeling of community and reduce bullying in the schools, which aligns with Aevidum’s goal and also helps create mental health awareness.
Hayley revitalized the recreational area used by her church for its annual Appenzell Picnic. Due to her hard work, the picnic woods are easier to navigate and the picnics are more enjoyable for all attendees!

State College, PA Mount Nittany Middle School Maker Space
Jenna created a Girl Scout program to help the residents at Claremont Nursing Home with technology. She also created a pamphlet in hopes of recruiting more volunteers for the nursing home.Â
Julia created a Maker Space for middle school students to express their own creativity, participate in various activities, and to de-stress in a safe place when needed!

Erin built seven nesting boxes for the American Kestrel to provide habitat, promote population growth and help dissipate the effects of land use, nesting cavity competition, and environmental contaminants.
Samantha organized a committee of volunteers to beautify her church's property and the surrounding community by picking up litter and planting flowers. Not only is it more beautiful, but supports and improves the environment.

Lititz, PA Tales of Freedom
Rachael introduced robotic concepts to high school students in a fun and interesting way to help them develop an interest in the STEM outside their school curriculum and learn about different careers.
Jess interviewed local Veterans from WWII to present day and compiled a booklet for local and school libraries. She wanted to share the veterans' heroic first person accounts of the history of freedom.

Newfoundland, PA Spruce Up the Park
Crystal created a website compiling information about the electoral process. First time voters can now more easily find information about polling places, types of voting, and candidates running for office.
Victoria took action to beautify her favorite park. She added educational signs along the trails, refreshed the picnic tables and the playground, and cleaned up garbage. The park is now a friendly and educational place for families to go.

York , PA Forget Your Illness
Hannah provided Buddy Benches to Notre Dame Elementary. Students are able to utilize the benches at recess to encourage a friendlier recess without conflict and/or the isolation of students.
Samantha brightened the lives of pediatric patients by creating 50 "Jared Boxes" filled with fun toys and activities. She delivered them to Hershey's Children's Hospital for the patients to enjoy.

Weatherly, PA Diabetes Dash Julya organized a 5k to educate her community about diabetes. The 5k also honored her late Gold Award Advisor and friend Coach Kiddish. It is now an annual event to continue diabetes education and honor Coach Kiddish.
Chambersburg, PA Children's Garden Robyn planted and maintained a garden at Grove Family Library. The garden enticed families to visit the library instead of utilizing online resources. The garden gives children a chance to explore the outdoors and the library in one stop.

Conestoga, PA Mom's House Information Station & Lobby Renewal
Abigail re-engineered rooms to create a functional and friendly arrangement at her church, expanded the library and created a message board to keep members informed about events, like her service projects.
Lindsay renovated a nonprofit's lobby to make it more inviting and organized. She installed a pamphlet system, new seating and a sign. The new space will bring the center continued success.

Alicia Jacoby McSherrystown, PA Meals on Wheels Favors
Samantha landscaped and beautified the Jane E. Delong Memorial during her Earth Day Clean Up Day to encourage others to continuously keep up the hard work and preserve the natural beauty of her community.
Alicia volunteered directly with the Director of the Meals on Wheels Program in Adams County. She assisted with the delivery of meals to inbound residents. She also made treats, and crafts for the elderly to help brighten their day.

Oaks Bird Feeding, Viewing and Conversation Area
Carlisle, PA Elementary School Clothing Closet
Leah placed 8 bird feeders around the Oaks Assisted Living property and created bird watching kits for the residents. This therapy is meant to boost their self-esteem, memory, and physical exercise.
Holly created a clothing closet to supply new and gently used clothes to children in need. Her closet can help children feel more comfortable and secure in themselves and reduce the worry of being bullied at school.

West Manchester, PA A Leg Up on Horse Care Emily built feed bins for Leg Up Farm, a therapy center for those with special needs who benefit from Equestrian Therapy. The new bins were built to reduce current and future problems in the feed room and help improve the health of the therapy horses.
Geeta Lalvani Harrisburg, PA STEM Day at Harrisburg University Geeta shared her excitement for STEM with younger girls by organizing a STEM Day filled with nine hands-on stations from physics to virtual reality in partnership with Harrisburg University and Phoenix Contact .
Hummelstown, PA Sensory Garden & Welcome Center Kathryn constructed a sensory garden at Camp Catherine in Hershey, PA. The goal of the easily accessible sensory garden is to allow individuals with disabilities to experience the beauty of nature.
Allison Lenker Mechanicsburg, PA We Can Totally Do This! Allison created a booklet to help the support system of breast cancer survivors. All of the content came directly from survivors and health care providers gathered by Allison. The booklets were distributed to local doctors’ offices.
Madison MacKenzie Williamsport, PA Fun & Games on the Conservation Trail Madison labeled native trees and added fun and educational games along the trail. She built a toad stool table and chairs in the picnic area to encourage people to enjoy the great outdoors.
Jennifer Nickas Wilkes-Barre, PA Picnic Ground Makeover Jennifer gave St. Mark's Church's picnic grounds a makeover. The Appenzell Picnic ground at the church is historical and the makeover makes the picnic area more inviting for families and community members to attend church.
Victoria Padmos East Stroudsburg, PA 2016 Pocono Township Bicentennial Celebration Victoria took on the role of Celebration Entertainment Coordinator. She worked with all age groups to organize a rendition of the traditional alma mater, bringing her community together.
Angela McCarty Dillsburg, PA Household Battery Recycling Angela knew that her county was behind on recycling. She started a program to help the environment by putting a singleuse battery recycling box up in her township. She encouraged others to recycle their batteries.
Karla Otto Lewisberry, PA Construct Water Trail Kiosk Board Karla built a Water Trail Kiosk at Yellow Breeches Park. The kiosk features maps, information on wildlife, waterway protection and safety tips. People now have an accessible place to learn important information.
Rian Power East Stroudsburg, PA Cancer Care Packages Rian educated teenagers in her community about cancer prevention and protection. She also helped organize cancer care packages to be delivered to patients at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center.

Red Lion, PA Raised Garden Beds
Amber was part of a team that went to the island of Vieques to do various repair projects and share the love and word of God. Her team repaired two roofs, built a wall to keep cool air in a church's worship area, laid tiles, and picked up trash.
Caroline built two raised bed gardens to help provide fresh produce to Cloverfield-Kingston House. With the rising prices of produce, she wanted to provide seniors living on a fixed income fresh and healthy food.

Reading through the Years
Kaiya honored veterans by organizing a special event. She collaborated with organizations to help raise awareness about the veterans' great work and sacrifices. It will be an annual event to benefit veterans.

Bushkill, PA Ashlei built a library at the Milford Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center. Thanks to her efforts the library is comprised of two bookshelves filled with over 300 nonfiction and fiction books, magazines, and art supplies.

Mary 's life is filled with people who struggle with diabetes. She organized a golf tournament to help raise awareness about diabetes. She organized a team of volunteers to help her mission.
Rebecca renovated game stands at the St. Mark's Community Lutheran Church Appenzell picnic grounds. She restructured and improved the games that have been in use for over a century!

Mechanicsburg, PA Source of Inspiration: Journal of Hope
Ann taught 5th graders how to take care of the planet through fun and educational environmental activities. The students created birdhouses for eastern bluebirds as a culminating project.
Charlotte partnered with Family Promise in pursuit of conveying the power of words. She collected over 300 journals and created positive, expressive and thought-provoking Writers’ Workshops.

Centre Hall/Spring Mills, PA Church Basement Renovation Jessye led the renovation of her church’s basement. The church now has a fully operating basement for after-school programs for children, choir practice, Girl Scout meeting space and more!
Hughesville, PA Lycoming Animal Protection Society Restoration-Cat Furniture Breanna educated her community on how to help control the stray cat population and built innovative trees to benefit cats in her local shelter.

Chambersburg, PA Aliyah's Blood Drive
Amanda created an informative packet and video to serve as a self-help kit for those who cannot afford an attorney. It focuses on expungements and pardons (what they are, how to get one, eligibility, benefits, etc.).
Aliyah organized and marketed a much needed blood drive in her community. When she learned of the blood shortages in her area, she knew she wanted to help. She put together a resource to help others organize a similar blood drive.

Camp Hill, PA The Pet Pantry Jonice collected 1600 pounds of pet food, along with treats and toys to assist AniMeals & help Meals-on-Wheels recipients feed their pets. Thanks to her efforts, both the recipients and their pet(s), enjoyed proper wholesome meals.Â

Kayanna showed the youth in her community that Monroe County has a lot to offer! She created a social media campaign to engage individuals in her area with a list of things to do and places to explore in her community.

Olivia spread awareness about the very real dangers of carbon monoxide. Her entire community was invited to attend an awareness event where she was able to distribute donated carbon monoxide detectors.
Jessica helped rebuild houses for the poverty stricken town of Elkhorn, West Virginia and to help the community grow closer to God.

Alexis coordinated and led a team that went to Guatemala to build ventilated block stoves. She planted trees for reforestation and fuel. She improved the health of the Mayan people and created safer living conditions.

Veronica designed and planted a garden to give community members a safe place to address grief and acceptance of losing a loved one. Families are encouraged to utilize the space to remember their loved ones and to help create new memories.
Megan created an inventory system for the color guard. With decreasing budgets in the arts, the new inventory system allows equipment to be easily viewed and available for other schools to access and use.

Emily Zook Kirkwood, PA Boosting the Morale of Teenagers Emily spread kindness and helped stop bullying at her school by planning and implementing an event that encouraged students to write and place positive sticky notes for others around the school.

of their hands-on WTS Central PA and supportive nature, Girl Scout STEM programs have positively impacted girls’
self-confidence related to STEM, as well as their conYork Revolution fidence overall. STEM participants credit Girl Scout
after-school programs (46%).16 The increased selfconfidence of girls in STEM programs is apparent to the adults who work with them as well. These adults report that girls in their programs display an increased confidence in their science (64–83%), math (50–59%), and computer skills (69–82%)12,13,14,16—confidence that is reflected in an increased willingness to take on new challenges or try new things (87%12 & 81%13), as well as their confidence overall (80–88%).12,13,14
