A GOLDEN TRADITION
Growing up among brothers, Elizabeth “Liz” Mahoney found a sisterhood at Girl Scouts. The connections she made and the experiences she was offered at Girl Scouts became such a meaningful part sarah of her childhood that she felt compelled to continue with her daughter, Sarah. Now, with Liz cheering her on as both her mother and Troop Leader, Sarah has travelled internationally, and made a state-wide impact with her Gold Award project. Sarah credits her confidence and ability to form connections among her peers and community members to her experiences at Girl Scouts. She began as a Brownie, and though she completed both her Bronze and Silver awards, it was an overheard conversation about the rewards of the Gold Award from an older sarah Girl Scout that really sparked her desire to go for Gold herself. It was always her plan to approach veterans’ issues with her project, so when the relocation of her high school resulted in their Veterans Memorial Albert Hess, being left behind, Sarah took action. Lewisburg Area What started as an effort to move the WWII Veteran memorial to the new location quickly gained support among community members and became a state-wide campaign to raise awareness for veterans’

issues. Though her project was technically completed in May of 2019, Sarah has since interviewed local veterans, compiled a Youtube video to document their stories, and worked with a state representative to establish November as Veterans’ Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. In the midst of working on her Gold Award project, Sarah embarked on the trip of a lifetime to Costa Rica with the Girl Scout Destinations program. There, she swam with sea life and connected with girls from all across the globe, extending her Girl Scout sisterhood even wider than her own troop in Lewisburg, PA. These were the meaningful experiences – building confidence, bettering communities, and connecting with girls of diverse backgrounds, whether they live down the street or across the country which Liz wanted for her daughter. Though the way girls from generation to generation experience Girl Scouts is unique, Liz and Sarah are the example that courage, confidence, and character Liz are truly in a Girl Scouts’ DNA.

Summer of STEAM

Each week of Lebanon Day Camp highlighted a different letter of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math), and the girls surprised me more and more with each new activity. In just a few weeks, they had transformed into confident, inquisitive leaders who felt ready to take on the next day - whatever challenges it may bring. Both girls and counselors focused on mindfulness, teamwork, and collaboration in order to tackle not only the STEAM challenges before us, but behavioral and emotional issues we faced throughout our time together. On the last day of camp, we sent home a well-rounded, diverse, sisterhood of Girl Scouts, ready to change the world.

With the help of GSHPA Financial Assistance, Lebanon Day Camp served approximately 100 girls this summer!

In its fourth year, the STEAM (formerly STEM) Mobile brought hands-on activities to thousands of girls across our footprint. They hypothesized, created, built, imagined, and more - all in the comfort of their regular Girl Scout meeting space. GSHPA is excited to announce that we have been awarded a KidCents Regional Grant from The RiteAid Foundation. This generous grant will fund our Northeast Regional STEAM Mobile in 2020!

Outdoors Makes a Difference Girls become leaders in the outdoors. Summer Camp is driven by girl choice. Outdoor experiences help girls unplug. GSBB at SCI Muncy currently serves 9 girls and their mothers.
Girls that spend most of their time inside often tell us that it is during GSHPA outdoor experience programming that they spend the most time outdoors. “One of our campers told me she wanted to get a step tracker for all of the steps she took at camp because the most walking she does at home is downstairs to watch TV.” - 2019 Summer Camp Counselor

Within the program’s first few weeks, our new Girl Scouts set out to explore the possibilities of connecting with peers of similar experiences through activities that promote leadership development and creative expression. The mothers at SCI Muncy campus have fully embraced their roles as Girl Scout ambassadors by planning Mother-Daughter meetings and exploring their role as a mother while having difficult conversations about their familial relationships. The GSBB SCI Muncy troop looks forward to its first Mother-Daughter meeting in early 2020!

11,678 girls participated in the Cookie Program. 5,008 girls participated in the Fall Product Program. GSHPA received a $175,000 grant for Girl Scouts Beyond Bars in The State Correctional Institution-Muncy. The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania is the generous lead funder through the Williamsport Lycoming Community Fund grant. This is the largest programmatic donation GSHPA has received since its inception!
In addition to the approximately 2,000 York County girls served by the STEAM Mobile, GSHPA served 264 girls in six schools in the York City School District after-school program. Girls spent six weeks learning about STEAM innovation and dreaming for their future careers thanks to generous community support. $248,570 in Financial Assistance provided directly to girls in 2019!
